politics & OPINIONS

Veteran Running For State Senate In 54th District Rafael Him, Republican from New Baden, is running for State Senate in the 54th District. No stranger to politics and government, he’s a 22-year combat veteran and serves on the Clinton County Board along with having served as a trustee for the Village of New Baden. He said his experiences in the Air Force taught him accountability, teamwork, leadership and a

passion for mission accomplishment. Him is running because of his love for Illinois, “I can no longer sit back and watch the people of Illinois suffer from poor politics and corruption so I decided to take action. We are currently in a state of emergency with an out of control budget and a declining population. We have to get back on track and advocate for reform. It’s

critical that we protect citizens and businesses from unfair and excessive taxation. Every time you increase taxes, you’re eroding personal freedoms and the ability of the people to provide for their families.” Him said “I know it is possible to balance the budget and be debt free in Illinois’ because we did it in Clinton C ounty. In November we passed

Nancy Pelosi's Tax Apocalypse To l i s t e n t o t h e Democrats, the American middle class will be lucky to survive the Republican tax bill. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi calls the bill "monumental, brazen theft from the American middle class," and that's one of her more restrained comments. Per Pelosi, the bill is an affront to the Founding Fathers, veterans, children

and all that's good and true in America. She constantly charges that the bill "raises taxes on 86 million middle-class households," and "hands a breathtaking 83 percent of its benefits to the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans." This is a rhetorically potent line of attack that the polling suggests has made considerable headway. It just isn't remotely honest.

The Republican bill is, every factual analysis agrees, an across-the-board tax cut. Pe l o s i ' s s e e m i ng ly damning factoids come from the year 2027, an odd date to focus on, since it's not when the bill goes into effect, but when part of it lapses. In about 10 years, many of the tax cuts on the individual side expire, which Pelosi portrays as a Republican plot to loot the middle class. It's a very strange argument against passing a bill to say horrible things will happen once the legislation no longer fully applies. This is more logically a case for extending the bill than for blocking it. Indeed, it's almost certain the middleclass provisions would eventually be preserved. What is, by the way, this looming middle-class wasteland in 2027? Pelosi relies on the liberal Tax Policy Center for her figures. As that outfit puts it, "on average, in 2027 taxes would change little for

another balanced budget for fiscal year 2018 and just paid off our last bond in December, making Clinton County Debt Free. This is what we can bring to Springfield a shining example of how to be good stewards of the taxpayer’s money. "I have the experience to help reform our state, I am the only candidate that has been elected, beaten my opponent, governed, balanced 4 budgets and helped my County be debt free in 2018, despite state budget cuts. "I realize that teamwork is necessary and that no one can accomplish anything

great by themselves. I have lived the motto of 'Integrity, Service Before Self and Excellence' in all we do and have the record to prove it. I humbly ask for your vote and support as I work to heal our state. It will be a hard fight but I am confident I will win it and I will always fight for you. lower- and middle-income groups." Oh. There's a reason Pelosi doesn't want to focus on the numbers when the tax bill she so vociferously opposes is fully in effect. In 2018, 80.4 percent of tax units get a tax cut, averaging $2,140. A grand total of 4.8 percent will see a tax increase. The small percentage of people with higher taxes is disproportionately tilted toward the top of the income scale. It's true that upper-income people get a bigger tax cut in terms of absolute dollars than anyone else, for the simple reason that the wealthy tend to pay more

in taxes than anyone else, as Brian Riedl of the Manhattan Institute points out. The tax bill is hardly invulnerable to criticism. Even if Republicans don't always like to admit it, corporate tax cuts are at the heart of the bill. They aren't popular, but they are progrowth. There used to be a bipartisan consensus — encompassing Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton -- that we needed corporate tax reform. Then there's the deficit. Republicans can fairly be taken to task for budget gimmicks (like the expira-

But the bill could've been smaller and added less to the deficit. It's impossible to say how the tax bill will play in the midterms. Cooking With Lizzie

Source of Fatigue Remains a Mystery

Stews And Main Dishes In the old days soups and stews helped cooks stretch their budgets more than any other type of food. My grandmother and mother were prime examples of that. As a child, I remember pots of soups simmering on the back burner of the old kitchen stove for hours, especially this time of year. Modern cooks still know the value of a hot bowl of soup, but for the sake of time, they must rely more and more on canned or convenience ingredients. Some of my favorite recipes are below.

Country Potato Soup 8 slices lean bacon 1/2 cup chopped onion 2½ cups water 1 bay leaf 1/4 tsp. grated nutmeg, rounded 1/4 tsp. celery salt 1 cup milk 2 T. finely minced fresh parsley

1/4 cup chopped celery 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cut in 1" cubes (about 3 cups) 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. dried marjoram, rounded (opt.) 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1 T. Worcestershire sauce

Chop bacon coarsely. In deep soup kettle, saute bacon, celery, and onion over medium heat until onion is golden, about 5 min. Add potatoes, water, and seasonings; bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, 15 min. or until potatoes are tender. Mash potatoes slightly — about 1/4 of cubes should still be whole. Remove bay leaf. Add milk, Worcestershire sauce, and parsley, and bring again to boil. Serve hot.

Thick Beef Vegetable Soup 2 lbs. chuck roast, trimmed of every bit of fat Broth Seasonings: 1 large onion, quartered 2 ribs celery, halved 2 bay leaves 12 peppercorns 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1 cup chopped raw potatoes, in 1/2" dice 1 cup fresh or frozen lima beans 1/4 cup quick-cooking pearled barley 1 (28 oz.) can tomatoes, drained and very coarsely chopped 1 cup fresh or frozen corn 1 T. brown sugar Chopped fresh basil

2 carrots, halved 1/2 green bell pepper, halved 8 whole cloves 1 tsp. salt 3 qts. hot water 1 cup sliced carrots, in 1/4" pieces 1 cup chopped parsnips, in 1/2" dice, woody core discarded 1 cup fresh or frozen peas 1 cup fresh or frozen green beans 1/2 cup chopped fresh 1 tsp. dried basil (opt.) 1 tsp. Kitchen Bouquet (opt.)

Preheat oven to 450°F. Combine meat with ingredients for broth seasonings in very large roaster or soup kettle and bake 30 minutes. Lower heat to 300°F and continue baking about 3 hours, until meat is fork-tender. Remove meat and let cool slightly. Shred into generous bitesize pieces; set aside. Remove seasonings with slotted spoon and discard. Increase oven temperature to 350°F. Add potatoes, carrots, lima beans, parsnips, barley, and tomatoes to broth and bake 45 minutes. Remove casserole from oven and add remaining ingredients. Return casserole to oven and bake 30 minutes longer, or until potatoes and parsnips are tender. Garnish with additional fresh basil.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife is 77 years old, goes to bed at 9 or 10 p.m., wakes at 10 a.m. and is exhausted by noon. She has severe arthritis, peripheral artery disease, scoliosis and depression. She has had many surgeries on her back, joints and blood vessels. In addition to fatigue, she experiences tingling in her hands and feet, and severe back pain, especially when standing and walking. She has had no success with pain management for her back, and has a clean bill of health from her neurologist and cardiologist. Exercise/activity results in being tired (with her back pain, exercise is a two-minute walk then rest). She takes an hour nap every afternoon. We proceed from doctor to doctor with the same issues, and the fatigue source remains undiagnosed. Do you have any suggestions how to proceed? — G.W. ANSWER: Fatigue is one of the most difficult symptoms to diagnose and treat, since there are so many possible causes. In her case,

the underlying conditions that you have mentioned — arthritis, peripheral artery disease and depression — all may have fatigue as a significant part of their symptomatology. Further, the medications used to treat these conditions often cause severe fatigue and sleepiness, which is confused with and sometimes goes along with fatigue. I can't tell you how many people treated for chronic pain write to me complaining of fatigue and feeling like a "zombie." Depression can be a cause of fatigue, but it also can be an understandable reaction to chronic pain and fatigue. While I can't provide specifics on how to help your wife, an experienced physician can review all of the medications to see whether they are likely to be doing more harm than good. He or she will consider treatment for depression that may help the fatigue in particular. Other effective treatments include a graded exercise program ("graded" means starting very slow and building up), which helps more than half of people improve. Finally, optimal treatment of her underlying conditions may help, though I'm sure her doctors are trying to do that now. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the body's rate of absorption for calcium? — A.

ANSWER: The textbook answer is 20 percent to 40 percent, but in reality, the answer is very complicated, as it depends on total body and intracellular calcium, vitamin D levels, presence of phosphates in food and other factors. The short answer is that it's usually exactly what it needs to be when things work properly. If the body is deficient in calcium, then absorption is maximal, but still most calcium in food is not absorbed. READERS: Calcium is important to good bone health, and the osteoporosis pamphlet furnishes details on how to prevent this universal condition. Charles Dickens was one of the greatest writers of English literature. I love the title of his book “Great Expectations.” Do you have great expectations for the coming year? So many people have lost their hope. The apostle Peter tells us how to come into great expectations. YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN. This is not some corny phrase. Listen to Peter, “All praise to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with GREAT EXPECTATIONS and have a priceless inheritance that is kept in heaven for you — pure and undefiled — beyond the reach of change and decay” (I Peter 1:3-5 NLT). Where did Peter learn about being born again? He learned it from Jesus. Nicodemus came to Jesus at night, in secret. He was a seeker of truth. Jesus told him, “Unless you are born again you cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3-16). Jesus was speaking of having a spiritual birth from above. Peter tells us that it is by God’s great mercy that we are born again. We did not choose Him, He chose us.

tice it. (Joshua 1:1-9) I came across this quote of Kenny Rogers on Facebook, “The 3 C’s in life – CHOICE, CHANCE, CHANGE. You must make the CHOICE to take a CHANCE if you want anything in life to CHANGE.” This New Year make the CHOICE to take the CHANCE for God to CHANGE and transform your life. YOU MUST BECOME A WORSHIPPER OF GOD. Believers become holy priests who offer up spiritual sacrifices of worship that pleases God. (I Peter 2:4-10) Worshippers can expect God to open heaven and fill them with His glory and light. He will protect and guide you as you live in His presence. Expect great intimacy with God this New Year. YOU MUST BE BUSY FOR GOD. When you are busy with what’s on God’s heart you can expect God’s reward and blessing. “You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires but you will be anxious to do the will of God” (I Peter 4:2). Jesus said, “Occupy until I come” (Luke 19:13). When you invest in God’s kingdom you can expect a great reward at Christ’s return. Peter warns us to live in expectancy of the Lord’s soon return to this earth. (II Peter 3) I hope you will live this New Year with great expectations of good. Have you been born again? Do it today!

How To Improve Flexibility

I

mproving flexibility is a goal for many athletes, whether they’re daily exercise devotees or weekend warriors. Taking steps to improve and maintain flexibility has numerous benefits that can pay dividends for athletes of all ages. Ac c o r d i n g t o t h e Harvard Medical School, well-stretched muscles more easily reach their full range of motion. That benefits athletes by improving their performance, and it can also improve daily life for non-athletes by making it easier to reach, bend or stoop to perform everyday tasks. As beneficial as being physically flexible can be, many people, no matter how hard they try, struggle to improve or maintain

their flexibility. Fortunately, there are some ways that devoted men and women can improve their flexibility and enjoy all of the benefits that increased flexibility provides. • Choose the right activities. Harvard Medical School notes that activities that lengthen and stretch muscles can help active men and women reduce their risks for injury while potentially preventing back pain and issues that may affect their balance. When done correctly, yoga can improve balance and flexibility. In addition, numerous studies have linked yoga to additional health benefits, such as stress reduction, that can make people less tense, thereby improving their flexibility. • Drink more water.

Drinking water helps to prevent tightness and muscle cramps. In fact, tightness or muscle cramps in the large muscles of the leg may be indicative of the early stages of dehydration. Drinking plain water is the most effective way to stay and remain hydrated. Don’t count coffee, tea or sports drinks as water, as such beverages many contain caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic, and while diuretics cause the increased passing of urine, they also decrease the amount of water that is absorbed by the kidneys, potentially contributing to dehydration. Drink plenty of water before, during and after workouts. • Start over after an extended break. If it’s been awhile since you last worked out, resist the

temptation to push yourself when returning to the gym. Depending on how long it’s been since you last exercised, you may need to start back at square one, which means reducing the amount of weight you lift and decreasing the resistance during cardiovascular exercises. Putting too much strain on muscles that have been sedentary for an extended period of time can cause aches, pains and even injury. Muscle tightness also may develop if you go too hard too quickly, greatly reducing flexibility. • Get up and go. Poor flexibility may be a byproduct of your lifestyle. Men and women who live sedentary lifestyles are less likely to enjoy the full range of motion from their muscles than those people

The Role Insulin Plays In The Body

I

nsulin plays a key role in metabolic functions in the body. People with diabetes have an intimate knowledge of insulin, particularly if they do not produce enough naturally. However, the rest of the public may be less knowledgeable about the role of insulin and its impact on overall health. Insulin is produced in the pancreas of the human body. Its most important function is the way it interacts with glucose (blood

sugar) to allow the cells of the body to use that glucose as energy. Insulin can be viewed as a type of key that unlocks the cells and enables glucose to enter. The pancreas senses when there is a spike in glucose in the bloodstream and reacts by producing insulin. Ac c ord i n g t o t h e Hormone Health Network, insulin also works to ensure the liver stores excess glucose so that it is not actively in the blood. Stored glucose is called glycogen.

This glycogen can be converted into fat when it is needed. Insulin also affects other metabolic processes, such as the breakdown of protein or fat. If insulin is not being produced in the right amounts, the result is high blood sugar, or hyperglycemia. Chronic hyperglycemia is the hallmark of diabetes mellitus. Complications of high blood sugar include damage to the nervous system, kidneys, eyes, and the extremities.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin. Supplementation with insulin will be necessary to avoid drastic changes in blood glucose levels. When a person has type 2 diabetes, cells fail to respond to insulin prop-

who are more active. Get off the couch when spending time at home, and if you work in an office, take routine breaks to stand up and walk around.

Poor flexibility can be painful and inconvenient, but there are many ways for men and women to improve their flexibility and, as a result, their quality of life.

erly. This is referred to as insulin resistance. As the disease progresses, a lack of insulin may also develop. Typically with this type of diabetes, excessive body weight and not enough exercise are the culprits in insulin resistance. Eating a healthier diet and becoming more physically active can help reverse the condition. Too little glucose in the blood (hypoglycemia) can

make a person feel irritable, tired or confused. Low blood sugar can lead to loss of consciousness. That is why it is crucial that blood sugar concentrations remain relatively stable. Without insulin, the body could not effectively make use of the energy obtained through eating and drinking. Insulin helps unlock cells so that glucose can be used to its full potential.

extra pounds should know that research indicates extra weight can cause injur y to the heart. Dropping those pounds, especially through physical activity that can boost heart health, can help men and women lower their blood pressure.

H

igh blood pressure is a big problem. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure. In Canada in 2014, slightly less than 18 percent of Canadians ages 12 and older reported being diagnosed with high blood pressure. While such figures might be frightening, Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that there are some simple and natural ways for people to lower their high blood pressure. • Opt for heart-healthy foods. Instead of foods that are high in sodium, eat a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables,

and lean proteins. Check labels before buying prepared foods at the grocery store, as many such foods are high in sodium. • Look for foods that contain probiotics. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that studies have linked foods that contain probiotics to healthy blood pressure. Probiotics are consumable live bacteria, and while studies regarding the relationship between probiotics and blood pressure are ongoing, researchers believe probiotics may produce chemicals that, when absorbed in the blood stream, may activate receptors in the blood vessels to lower blood pressure. • Lose weight. People with high blood pressure who are carrying a few

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It’s a good time for reunions with those very special people from your past. You could be pleasantly surprised by what comes to light during one of these get-togethers. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The new year gets off to an encouraging start for the Bold Bovine who takes that demanding workplace challenge by the horns and steers it in the right direction. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The clever Gemini will be quick to spot the telltale signs of workplace changes that could open up new opportunities for the right person. (And that’s you, isn’t it?) CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child’s post-holiday letdown soon lifts as you begin to get back into your comfortable routine. Someone from your past extends a surprise bid to reconnect. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’ve been the ultimate social Lion over the holidays. Now it’s time to relax and recharge your energy so you can be at your best when you pounce on that new project. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A relationship could be moving in a direction you might not want to follow. Step back for a better overview of the situation. You might be surprised at what you see. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Emotions rule at the start of

the week, affecting your perception about a decision. Best advice: Avoid commitments until that good Libran sense kicks back in. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A longtime friendship could take a romantic turn early in the new year. While this pleases your passionate side, your logical self might want to go slow. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone might make a surprising disclosure about a trusted friend or workplace colleague. Stay cool and reserve judgment until you get more facts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might think you’ve found what you’ve been looking for. But appearances can be deceiving. Don’t act on your discovery until you know more about it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’re no doubt anxious for that confusing situation to be cleared up. But don’t press for a quick resolution or you might overlook some vital facts. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Now that your holiday distractions are easing, you need to apply yourself to getting those unfinished tasks done so you can begin a new project with a clean slate.
