Veteran Running For State Senate In 54th District Rafael Him, Republican from New Baden, is running for State Senate in the 54th District. No stranger to politics and government, he’s a 22-year combat veteran and serves on the Clinton County Board along with having served as a trustee for the Village of New Baden. He said his experiences in the Air Force taught him accountability, teamwork, leadership and a passion for mission accomplishment. Him is running because of his love for Illinois, “I can no longer sit back and watch the people of Illinois suffer from poor politics and corruption so I decided to take action. We are currently in a state of emergency with an out of control budget and a declining population. We have to get back on track and advocate for reform. It’s critical that we protect citizens and businesses from unfair and excessive taxation. Every time you increase taxes, you’re eroding personal freedoms and the ability of the people to provide for their families.” Him said “I know it is possible to balance the budget and be debt free in Illinois’ because we did it in Clinton C ounty. In November we passed

another balanced budget for fiscal year 2018 and just paid off our last bond in December, making Clinton County Debt Free. This is what we can bring to Springfield a shining example of how to be good stewards of the taxpayer’s money. "I have the experience to help reform our state, I am the only candidate that has been elected, beaten my opponent, governed, balanced 4 budgets and helped my County be debt free in 2018, despite state budget cuts. "I realize that teamwork is necessary and that no one can accomplish anything great by themselves. I have lived the motto of 'Integrity,

Service Before Self and Excellence' in all we do and have the record to prove it. I humbly ask for your vote and support as I work to heal our state. It will be a hard fight but I am confident I will win it and I will always fight for you. "My Contract with the People: 1. Put citizens above politicians, each law passed should apply to those who passed it. 2. Fight for fiscal responsibility and accountability. 3. Fight for a "real" balanced budget. 4. Fight for term limits. 5. Fight for tax reform. 6. I will not take a pension."

again. We did not choose Him, He chose us. “As a result you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ” (I Peter 1:1-2 NLT). When you are born again into God’s family, you no longer expect the wrath and judgment of God for your sin, but God’s grace and goodness. You have an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you. What great expectations! What good news! YOU MUST BE HOLY. Most New Year’s resolutions and vows are soon forgotten. When one is born again the Spirit of God makes you holy, set apart for God. (I Peter 1:2) “But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy” (I Peter 1:13-17). Great expectations of joy and growth in maturity and Christ-likeness will fill your life as you determine to live a life that pleases God. (I Peter 2:1-2; 4:1-5) It’s the blood of Christ that makes us holy. (I Peter 1:2) YOU MUST BE TRANSFORMED. Great expectations will arise when your mind and soul is changed by the power of the eternal Word of God. (I Peter 2:2-3; Romans 12:1-2) Can people change? Absolutely! God’s living Word is a powerful change agent. God promises prosperity and success to those will meditate day

Charles Dickens was one of the greatest writers of English literature. I love the title of his book “Great Expectations”. Do you have great expectations for the coming year? So many people have lost their hope. The apostle Peter tells us how to come into great expectations. YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN. This is not some corny phrase. Listen to Peter, “All praise to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with GREAT EXPECTATIONS and have a priceless inheritance that is kept in heaven for you – pure and undefiled – beyond the reach of change and decay” (I Peter 1:3-5 NLT). Where did Peter learn about being born again? He learned it from Jesus. Nicodemus came to Jesus at night, in secret. He was a seeker of truth. Jesus told him, “Unless you are born again you cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3-16). Jesus was speaking of having a spiritual birth from above. Peter tells us that it is by God’s great mercy that we are born

and night on God’s Word and observe to practice it. (Joshua 1:1-9) I came across this quote of Kenney Rogers on Facebook, “The 3 C’s in life – CHOICE, CHANCE, CHANGE. You must make the CHOICE to take a CHANCE if you want anything in life to CHANGE.” This New Year make the CHOICE to take the CHANCE for God to CHANGE and transform your life. YOU MUST BECOME A WORSHIPPER OF GOD. Believers become holy priests who offer up spiritual sacrifices of worship that pleases God. (I Peter 2:4-10) Worshippers can expect God to open heaven and fill them with His glory and light. He will protect and guide you as you live in His presence. Expect great intimacy with God this New Year. YOU MUST BE BUSY FOR GOD. When you are busy with what’s on God’s heart you can expect God’s reward and blessing. “You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires but you will be anxious to do the will of God” (I Peter 4:2). Jesus said, “Occupy until I come” (Luke 19:13). When you invest in God’s kingdom you can expect a great reward at Christ’s return. Peter warns us to live in expectancy of the Lord’s soon return to this earth. (II Peter 3) I hope you will live this New Year with great expectations of good. Have you been born again? Do it today! Stews And Main Dishes In the old days soups and stews helped cooks stretch their budgets more than any other type of food. My grandmother and mother were prime examples of that. As a child, I remember pots of soups simmering on the back burner of the old kitchen stove for hours, especially this time of year. Modern cooks still know the value of a hot bowl of soup, but for the sake of time, they must rely more and more on canned or convenience ingredients. Some of my favorite recipes are below.

HOURS 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Tuesday thru Friday 9:00 am – Noon Saturday

Country Potato Soup 8 slices lean bacon 1/2 cup chopped onion 2½ cups water 1 bay leaf 1/4 tsp. grated nutmeg, rounded 1/4 tsp. celery salt 1 cup milk 2 T. finely minced fresh parsley

2

1/4 cup chopped celery 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cut in 1" cubes (about 3 cups) 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. dried marjoram, rounded (opt.) 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1 T. Worcestershire sauce

Locations To Serve You!

Chop bacon coarsely. In deep soup kettle, saute bacon, celery, and onion over medium heat until onion is golden, about 5 min. Add potatoes, water, and seasonings; bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, 15 min. or until potatoes are tender. Mash potatoes slightly — about 1/4 of cubes should still be whole. Remove bay leaf. Add milk, Worcestershire sauce, and parsley, and bring again to boil. Serve hot.

In large soup kettle, combine beans, water, salt and baking soda. Bring to boil, cover, and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat, skim off foam, re-cover, and let stand 2 hours. (Beans can also be soaked overnight if you prefer.) Add remaining ingredients except parsley and simmer, covered, about 1½ to 2 hours. Watch beans, for cooking time will vary, and beans should not get mushy. Remove ham bone; dice overly large pieces of meat and return to soup. Add parsley just before serving. Each year wreaths are laid at Arlington National Cemetery and over 1,200 other cemeteries across America. Cold & Flu Season!

The Benefits To Joining A Local Gym

Get Your Flu and Shingles Shots NOW!

R

esolving to get healthy is a worthy goal. A healthy lifestyle that includes a nutritious diet and routine exercise can improve quality of life and decrease a person’s risk for various ailments, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In an effort to exercise more, many men and women choose to join local gyms. Such a decision can have a profound impact on efforts to get healthier, benefitting men and women in myriad ways. • Gym members exercise more than non-members. It’s long been assumed that joining a gym motivates people to exercise more often, as few people want to pay monthly membership fees for facilities they don’t use. But researchers at Iowa State University backed up that assumption in a study of 405 relatively healthy adults. Half of the study participants had belonged to a gym for at least 30 days, while half had not been gym members for at l e a st t h re e mont hs . Participants who belonged to a gym exercised an average of 484 minutes per week, greatly exceeding the 150-minutes-per-week minimum recommended by the Department of He a lt h a n d Hu m a n Services. Non-members exercised an average of just 137 minutes per week, with only 18 percent meeting the

at

recommended weekly exercise guidelines. • Joining a gym improves overall health. While common sense suggests joining a gym improves overall health, the Iowa State study actually proved that to be true. The study found that, compared to non-members, gym-goers tended to have lower resting heart rates, higher cardiorespiratory fitness and smaller waist circumferences. Researchers found that those benefits were especially prevalent among participants who had kept their gym memberships for a year or more. • Joining a gym can increase the chances of getting more well-rounded workouts. DHHS guidelines say adults need at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity physical activity and should perform muscle-strengthening exercises on two or more days each week. Non-members may be able to meet the guidelines for aerobic activity on

their own, but the Iowa State study found that only about 20 percent of Americans meet guidelines for strength training. Gym memberships provide access to weights and strength-training machines that non-members do not necessarily have at home, increasing the chances that gym members will enjoy fuller, more well-rounded workouts. • Joining a gym can be a social endeavor. While many people join gyms to get healthy, it’s important that prospective members not overlook the potential social benefits of gym memberships. Exercise classes hosted at local gyms can provide great opportunities to meet like-minded individuals, and such individuals may ultimately become support systems people can lean on to achieve their fitness goals. Joining a gym can serve as a catalyst for men and women looking to get healthy.

Air Quality And Heart Health

A

ccording to the U.S. Env ironment a l Protection Agency, studies have shown that air pollution can trigger heart attacks and strokes. The threat posed by air pollution is greater among people who have or have had coronar y arter y disease, angina, heart attack, bypass surgery or an angioplasty, heart failure, stroke or transient ischemic attack, or blockages in the arteries of the neck or legs.

Locally Owned

People who have internal cardiac defibrillators also may be at greater risk of heart attack or stroke due to air pollution. While it’s common to assume that air pollution is only a problem for people who live in large cities, the American Heart Association warns against making such assumptions, noting that air pollution can be traced to a host of sources, including wildfires and cooking with wood stoves, that can be found

outside of major cities. The AHA also notes that researchers believe pollution has inflammatory effects on the heart that can cause cardiovascular problems.

The Shoppers Weekly – Centralia / Salem Area

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It’s a good time for reunions with those very special people from your past. You could be pleasantly surprised by what comes to light during one of these get-togethers. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The new year gets off to an encouraging start for the Bold Bovine who takes that demanding workplace challenge by the horns and steers it in the right direction. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The clever Gemini will be quick to spot the telltale signs of workplace changes that could open up new opportunities for the right person. (And that’s you, isn’t it?) CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child’s post-holiday letdown soon lifts as you begin to get back into your comfortable routine. Someone from your past extends a surprise bid to reconnect. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’ve been the ultimate social Lion over the holidays. Now it’s time to relax and recharge your energy so you can be at your best when you pounce on that new project. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A relationship could be moving in a direction you might not want to follow. Step back for a better overview of the situation. You might be surprised at what you see. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Emotions rule at the start of

Wednesday, January 3, 2018

the week, affecting your perception about a decision. Best advice: Avoid commitments until that good Libran sense kicks back in. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A longtime friendship could take a romantic turn early in the new year. While this pleases your passionate side, your logical self might want to go slow. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone might make a surprising disclosure about a trusted friend or workplace colleague. Stay cool and reserve judgment until you get more facts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might think you’ve found what you’ve been looking for. But appearances can be deceiving. Don’t act on your discovery until you know more about it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’re no doubt anxious for that confusing situation to be cleared up. But don’t press for a quick resolution or you might overlook some vital facts. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Now that your holiday distractions are easing, you need to apply yourself to getting those unfinished tasks done so you can begin a new project with a clean slate. BORN THIS WEEK: People respect both your wisdom and your deep sense of loyalty and compassion. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
