Girl Scouts Give Back

Girl Scout Troop #8653 would like to thank their family and friends who purchased items from the fall nut and candy sales. With the profit that the girls earned, as a troop, they purchased items for children in the community. The girls had two shopping days to purchase toys for the Angel Trees. As a troop, the girls were able to fulfill 16 tags from the Angel Tree, wishing a Merry Christmas to all!

You've Got To Have A Team First Legend has it that Herb Brooks, America's "Miracle" hockey coach, once said, "All-Star teams don't win." It's hard to argue with Mr. Brooks, may he rest in peace. But of course, what he generally espoused isn't always the case. Plenty of teams, in all sports, have fielded a group of "all of them are stars," and of course, they've won. Somebody's got to win. A bunch of talented players will always have a good shot of overcoming any self-inflicted, ego-centric issues off the field through sheer talent on the field whether you like it or not. What I've learned over a lifetime of dissecting sports is that conviction and chemistry are what matters most. When I say that, I don't mean the forward or fullback should be serving 25-to-life and playing with a bunch of Bunsen burners,

I mean they have to be brought up through a process where the coach's wisdom is solid and correct, as well as easily translatable to the players. Seth Davis' tour-de-force about John Wooden, "A Coach's Life," brims with that sentiment. If you ever read the book, keep a pad and pen handy because almost every other page features a remark that is worth repeating. I'm reminded of this because of the Giancarlo Stanton trade to the New York Yankees. The Yankees are, once again, an all-star team. I know it sometimes gets tiresome to talk about them, but you have to admit, the team does have a penchant for making headlines. Illinois' Future: There Is A Choice By Sen. Kyle McCarter

One year ago, as we approached a new year (2017) I stated that 2017 begins with the same big challenges Illinois faced at the start of 2016: No budget, weak economy and politics above people. Regrettably, as 2017 comes to a close we are in much the same predicament. Another year. Again no real progress. However, the new year renews my optimism. 2017: The budget passed by the Democrat-controlled legislature during the summer is $2.6 billion out of balance. It’s not constitutional. And, it included a permanent 32% increase in the state income tax rate. That means government continues to spend more and taxpayers pay even more. The state’s economy remains weak — trailing neighboring states in job creation and posting an unemployment rate (4.9%) that’s above the national average of 4.1%. Additionally, the partisan political battle between Democrats and the Republican governor raged on with the people of Illinois becoming collateral damage. We the people are now saddled with more debt, higher taxes, diminished

prosperity and fewer opportunities. There were many red flags of warning about Illinois throughout 2017, including; • Among the states with the highest outmigration of people to other states, which leads to wealth flight • High unemployment, especially for minorities • A tax burden that exceeds neighboring states • Property taxes among the highest in the nation • The second-worst state for fiscal health with more than $9 billion in overdue bills 2018: However, I am an optimist. I have hope for Illinois. Because it is an election year, 2018 could be a turning point if the people of Illinois make their collective voice heard by Springfield. Change is possible. There is a choice to be made between continuing down the same road of fai lure or embracing common sense practices and principles we know work. These practices and principles are the same ones we follow taking care of our families and small businesses. They should be a confident guide for government too. If we are serious

about addressing Illinois’ fiscal crisis we must implement reforms making government more efficient and accountable. It means not spending money we don’t have, and being honest with the people about what we can afford. We need fewer regulatory burdens removing the roadblocks to job growth by boosting business expansion and retention. If our state economy is not growing at a sufficient rate, Illinois won’t receive the natural tax revenue growth needed to pay its bills or pay for the programs our most vulnerable citizens require. And without a growing economy Illinois can’t get out of debt. The challenges of our state are real and the unwillingness of the political machine in charge to courageously address the reforms needed is obvious as well. We must stand together and demand from our elected officials that they take the political risk to act courageously on our behalf or we will replace them with someone that will. May God bless each of you with His favor in 2018. Together, with God’s help, we can save our state.

A classmate passed me in the hall and asked me to give him some. When I refused, he said, “Why not? Decision Making In 2018 Every week that I go to the county jail, I meet men and women who have made bad choices. All of us, at one time or another, have made faulty decisions in life. A mark of spiritual maturity is the ability to make right decisions. The apostle Paul gives us vital keys to make godly and wise decisions. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2) If you want to make godly and wise decisions, decisions that glorify God, apply these eight tests for decision making. THE SCRIPTURAL TEST. “Has God already spoken about it in His Word?” Wise and godly decisions will never be contrary to God’s Word. THE SANCTIFICATION TEST. “Will this keep me growing in the character of Christ?” Paul tells us to be “transformed into the image of Christ by the renewing of our mind.” (Romans 12:2; II Corinthians 3:18; I Thessalonians 5:21-23) Any decision that would hinder your growth in Christ likeness is not a wise or godly decision. THE SUPREME TEST. “Does this glorify God?” Paul tells us that we are “to prove what is the good and acceptable will of God.” (Romans 12:2) Ask yourself, will this decision glorify God? “Therefore, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (II Corinthians 10:31) “Walk as children of light . . . and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:8, 10) Perhaps like David you have made a bad decision. God is merciful. Pray David’s prayer of repentance. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10-11) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Free Haircuts Given For National Law Enforcement Day Rend Lake College students enrolled in the Barber and Cosmetology programs invited all local law enforcement to stop by Studio RLC

in Mt. Vernon for free haircuts on Tuesday, Jan. 9 for National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Police and corrections

officers, agents, investigators and the members of dozens of other professions in law enforcement received a free haircut and

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Shutting people out to avoid distractions, even under a deadline, can cause hurt feelings. Instead, return calls and emails, and explain why you need a zone of privacy for now. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Although your keen Bull’s eyes usually can discern what’s fact from what’s faux, that upcoming decision will need really solid data before you can risk a commitment. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) As your confidence grows, you should be able to work toward your goals with more enthusiasm. Open your mind to suggestions. Some of them might even work for you. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Reconnecting with someone from your past stirs up that old sense of adventure. But before you do anything else, be sure to get answers to those stilllingering questions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some people might resent the way you plan to resolve a difficult situation. But your commitment to making tough but fair decisions soon wins you their respect and support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Mixed signals could be causing that vexing workplace problem. Before you choose to leave the project, ask for a meeting so you can get things out in the open. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your good intentions could backfire if you’re not careful with other

people’s feelings. Try using persuasion, not pressure, to get others to see your side of the situation. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your dedication to finishing the task at hand is laudable. But be careful not to overdo the midnight oil bit. Take time for relaxation with someone very special. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although your intuition will help you make some tough choices in the first half of the month, you’ll need more facts to back up your actions later on. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) All that hard work and research in the workplace finally pays off as you hoped it would. Ignore comments from jealous types who are out to get the Goat riled up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unfair decision creates unnecessary problems. But avoid anger and move carefully as you work this out. Expect to get support from an unlikely source. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A fuzzy financial vista persists until midmonth, when things begin to clear up. You’ll also gain a better perspective on how to handle those pesky personal problems.
