Illinois' Future: There Is A Choice By Sen. Kyle McCarter

One year ago, as we approached a new year (2017) I stated that 2017 begins with the same big challenges Illinois faced at the start of 2016: No budget, weak economy and politics above people. Regrettably, as 2017 comes to a close we are in much the same predicament. Another year. Again no real progress. However, the new year renews my optimism. 2017: The budget passed by the Democrat-controlled legislature during the summer is $2.6 billion out of balance. It’s not constitutional. And, it included a permanent 32% increase in the state income tax rate. That means government continues to spend more and taxpayers pay even more. The state’s economy remains weak — trailing neighboring states in job creation and posting an unemployment rate (4.9%) that’s above the national average of 4.1%. Additionally, the partisan political battle between Democrats and the Republican governor raged on with the people of Illinois becoming collateral damage. We the people are now saddled with more debt, higher taxes, diminished

prosperity and fewer opportunities. There were many red flags of warning about Illinois throughout 2017, including; • Among the states with the highest outmigration of people to other states, which leads to wealth flight • High unemployment, especially for minorities • A tax burden that exceeds neighboring states • Property taxes among the highest in the nation • The second-worst state for fiscal health with more than $9 billion in overdue bills 2018: However, I am an optimist. I have hope for Illinois. Because it is an election year, 2018 could be a turning point if the people of Illinois make their collective voice heard by Springfield. Change is possible. There is a choice to be made between continuing down the same road of fai lure or embracing common sense practices and principles we know work. These practices and principles are the same ones we follow taking care of our families and small businesses. They should be a confident guide for government too. If we are serious

about addressing Illinois’ fiscal crisis we must implement reforms making government more efficient and accountable. It means not spending money we don’t have, and being honest with the people about what we can afford. We need fewer regulatory burdens removing the roadblocks to job growth by boosting business expansion and retention. If our state economy is not growing at a sufficient rate, Illinois won’t receive the natural tax revenue growth needed to pay its bills or pay for the programs our most vulnerable citizens require. And without a growing economy Illinois can’t get out of debt. The challenges of our state are real and the unwillingness of the political machine in charge to courageously address the reforms needed is obvious as well. We must stand together and demand from our elected officials that they take the political risk to act courageously on our behalf or we will replace them with someone that will. May God bless each of you with His favor in 2018. Together, with God’s help, we can save our state.

Rafael Him Names Campaign Chairman Rafael Him announced last week Clinton County Chairman Bob Fix, who is also the Chief of Police for the City of Breese, is on board to be his Campaign Chairman in his State Senate Campaign for the 54th District. The sewing machine was invented in 1854, but it took many years to sell enough machines so that the sewing bird was no longer necessary. Copies are made today mainly for collectors or as decorations. Early sewing birds sometimes were given as love tokens. The groom-to-be gave a sewing bird to his future bride long before the wedding so she would think of him while she sewed her trousseau. Sewing was an important part of the life of a woman during the 17th and 18th centuries. There was no sewing machine; everything was hand-stitched. Iron "grippers" sometimes were used to hold one end of the fabric while it was hemmed or embroidered. An improvement, the first "sewing bird," was invented by Charles Waterman in 1853. It was made of brass, iron or, later, steel. The tool was clamped to a table and the bird held the fabric taut. It acted like an extra hand. Improvements were added to this sewing tool, including emery balls to sharpen needles, spool holders, drawers, winding reels for thread, pincushions, thread cutters and clamps made in fancy shapes like dogs, snakes, cherubs or

Give Blood Now... Help Save Lives

American Red Cross

T January 2018

he American Red Cross is urging eligible donors to give more life to patients in the new year by giving blood or platelets. Donations decline during the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day when busy holiday schedules cause regular donors to be less available to give and many blood drives may be canceled due to severe winter storms. Last year, nearly 64,000 fewer blood and platelet donations were given through the Red Cross during the seven weeks from Thanksgiving

through the first week of January than the average during the rest of the year. “By taking just about an hour of time today, you can help save someone’s life within a few weeks or even days of your donation,” said Joe Zydlo, external communications manager of the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Regions. “We’re asking donors to give now to help ensure blood is available when patients need it most.” Blood is perishable and can only be replenished by volunteer donors. Red blood cells, the most transfused blood

product, must be transfused within 42 days. Platelets, the tiny cells that form clots and help stop bleeding, must be transfused within just five days. More than half of all platelet donations go to cancer patients who may need platelet transfusions to prevent life-threatening bleeding during chemotherapy. Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Shutting people out to avoid distractions, even under a deadline, can cause hurt feelings. Instead, return calls and emails, and explain why you need a zone of privacy for now. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Although your keen Bull’s eyes usually can discern what’s fact from what’s faux, that upcoming decision will need really solid data before you can risk a commitment. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) As your confidence grows, you should be able to work toward your goals with more enthusiasm. Open your mind to suggestions. Some of them might even work for you. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Reconnecting with someone from your past stirs up that old sense of adventure. But before you do anything else, be sure to get answers to those stilllingering questions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some people might resent the way you plan to resolve a difficult situation. But your commitment to making tough but fair decisions soon wins you their respect and support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Mixed signals could be causing that vexing workplace problem. Before you choose to leave the project, ask for a meeting so you can get things out in the open. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your good intentions could backfire if you’re not careful with other

people’s feelings. Try using persuasion, not pressure, to get others to see your side of the situation. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your dedication to finishing the task at hand is laudable. But be careful not to overdo the midnight oil bit. Take time for relaxation with someone very special. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although your intuition will help you make some tough choices in the first half of the month, you’ll need more facts to back up your actions later on. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) All that hard work and research in the workplace finally pays off as you hoped it would. Ignore comments from jealous types who are out to get the Goat riled up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unfair decision creates unnecessary problems. But avoid anger and move carefully as you work this out. Expect to get support from an unlikely source. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A fuzzy financial vista persists until midmonth, when things begin to clear up. You’ll also gain a better perspective on how to handle those pesky personal problems. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful way of being there for those who need your help in difficult times. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
