Webber Students Compete At RLC’s Warrior Superfan Day Local high school students filled the stands at Rend Lake College’s second Warrior Superfan Day during a doubleheader against Wabash Valley College this afternoon. The students attended the men’s and women’s games for free to participate in a basketball shooting contest for prizes. Three high school students were drawn to compete in the Warrior Challenge, during which they attempted to make a lay-up, free throw, and 3-point shot in 30 seconds. Those three students were Brendan Frazier, Dalton Hart and Peyton Hill, all from Webber Township High School. The final Warrior Superfan Day is set for Wednesday, January 17 in the James “Hummer” Waugh Gymnasium on the Ina campus with the same Warrior Challenge during halftime of the RLC Men’s game. All in-district high school students are invited to attend and compete for free. Students who compete are also invited back on Saturday, February 17 for a winnertake-all half-court shot competition, with the winner taking home an Academic Award for 12 free credit hours at RLC, valued at $1,500. For more information about the Warrior Superfan Days, contact RLC’s Welcome Center at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1343 or welcome@rlc.edu.

WINNER OF THE 2016 BLUE RIBBON AWARD

This January, National Blood Donor Month, the American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood and platelet donors of all blood types to make an appointment to give now and help address a winter blood donation shortage. Severe winter weather has had a tremendous impact on blood donations already this year, with more than 150 blood drives forced to cancel causing over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. This is in addition to seasonal illnesses, such as the flu, and hectic holiday schedules collectively contributing to more than 28,000 fewer donations than what was needed in November and December. “Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients,” said Joe Zydlo, ex-

ternal communications manager, Missouri-Illinois Red Cross Blood Services Region. “It’s the blood on the shelves that helps save lives in an emergency, and that’s why we’re asking eligible individuals to make an appointment to give blood or platelets today.” While serving local hospitals is the first priority, the Red Cross can move blood products to where they’re needed most. This allows generous donors throughout the country to contribute to the national blood supply and potentially help patients locally and in storm-affected areas. While all blood types are urgently needed, there is a more critical need for the following blood and donation types right now: • Platelets: The clotting portion of blood primarily given to cancer patients during treatment and always in great demand. • Type O negative: The blood type that can be transfused to almost everyone and is what doctors reach for in trauma situations. • Type B negative: The blood type that can be transfused to type B Rhpositive and negative patients. • Type AB: The plasma type that can be transfused to almost everyone and can be donated through a platelet or plasma donation, where available, or during a regular blood donation. Eligible donors can find a blood or platelet donation opportunity and schedule an appointment to donate by using the free Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-

733-2767). Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass are encouraged to help speed up the donation process. RapidPass lets donors complete the pre-donation reading and answer the health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, by visiting redcrossblood.org/ rapidpass from the convenience of a mobile device or computer, or through the Blood Donor App. Ever y two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood – a need that is all too real for Heather Hrouda and her family. Hrouda was 25 weeks pregnant with her fourth child when she began bleeding. An emergency cesarean section was performed, but Hrouda hemorrhaged during surgery. She received 14 units of blood and seven units of plasma before she and her newborn son, Rusher, were flown to a nearby hospital. There, she received additional transfusions, and Rusher was moved to the neonatal intensive care unit, where he also received a blood transfusion to increase his red blood cell count. “My family and I are so thankful for all the blood donors,” said Hrouda. “It is safe to say that without their time and donations, Rusher and I would not be here today. Because of donors, I get to watch my kids grow up and become the adults they dream of being.” The Hroudas are just two examples of the many patients who depend on blood and platelet donors. that the game's strategy closely mirrored military maneuvers. Even though he never played a down of football, he designed the flying wedge — a play that mimicked the tactics of Napoleon's army by concentrating a large number of men and pointing them like an arrow at the weakest part of the opponent's line. Harvard unveiled the play in 1892 against Yale, and people literally stood in awe when they saw the team take the formation. Shaped like a "V" with the ball carrier nestled inside, fans watched as most of the Harvard players linked arms and moved forward, completely obliterating the hapless Yale defender who stood in their way. The play helped spark interest in the game. Parke Davis, an early sports writer, commented that the play energized fans. As a student at Harvard University, a young Theodore Roosevelt championed "the vigorous life," and the burgeoning sport of American football was something he clearly supported. When he became president, the game often figured in his landmark speeches. "In life, as in a football game, the principle to follow is: hit the line hard; don't foul and don't shirk, but hit the line hard!" His mood changed a few years later, however, when his young son Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. enrolled at Harvard and joined the football team. The annual Harvard-Yale game had become the nation's top sporting event by this time, and football had become far more violent than the "masculine game" Roosevelt knew from his time in college. This was the era of the "flying wedge." A Harvard alumnus and war historian noted

ball field." Pundits estimated that a flying wedge weighed more than a quarter-ton. Every resulting pileup from a play lent itself to anticipation: Was somebody crushed? The answer, sadly, was often yes. In 1905 alone, the "flying wedge" play resulted in 22 deaths and an estimated 149 "serious" injuries. Newspapers printed body counts and took out full-page editorials calling for reform. Ever the hands-on president, Roosevelt called on the leading institutions to visit the White House. There, he used his "bully pulpit" to spur the creation of what is today called the National C ollegiate Association of Athletics (NCAA) — a body that began in the name of safety for college athletes. The flying wedge was outlawed as a result, but the play does exist today in a reduced form. Returning teams are allowed to form a "wedge" for the kick returner, and defenders who take on the formation are called "wedge busters." Look for it next time you watch a game, and marvel as nobody dies. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

ing with my van. But when I arrived at my destination, I was shocked to find one of the blackbirds embedded in the grille of my van. The bird had a broken neck and I had to dig the gory mess out with a shovel. Unresolved anger can become an evil gory mess, if not dealt with immediately. “Do not let the sun go down on your wrath.” (Ephesians 4:26) Jesus equated unrighteous anger to murder and taught that it would bring the severe judgement of God. (Matthew 5:21-31) Anger often leads to other sins such as stealing, cursing, venomous words, and the most serious effect of all, grieving the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 4:28-30) Unresolved anger opens a door for the devil to bring about sickness, pain, emotional turmoil, and spiritual weakness and confusion. Moses’ anger kept him out of the Promised Land. We are warned not to have friendship with an angry man. Their anger can be toxic, contagious, and dangerous. (Proverbs 22:24; 29:22) FORGIVE QUICKLY. Remember there is a day

Dealing With Anger Recently there was a post with a picture of my cute five-year-old granddaughter and her friend sitting on the front row of a near empty theatre with a tub of popcorn and drink sitting on their laps. They were waiting in anticipation for the movie “Angry Birds” to start. I remember asking someone what the theme of the movie was and they laughingly replied that it was nonsensical. “Angry Birds” may be entertaining to children, but in real life unresolved anger can be devastating. “Angry Birds” may fly overhead and flutter in our stomach, but we must not let them alight. God’s Word instructs us how to deal with anger. “Be angry and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.” (Ephesians 4:25-31) Apply God’s solution to the devastation of anger. S P E A K T RU T H . “Therefore, putting away lying. Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor.” (Ephesians 4:25) Lying or ignoring your anger will not resolve

it. To bottle up your emotions could cause anger to seethe, poison, agitate, and eventually explode. We are admonished to “speak the truth in love”. Honestly share how you feel about a certain matter. It may not resolve the issue but it will help you stay healthy spiritually and emotionally. Sometimes we make excuses for our anger, such as, “That’s my heritage.” Or “I’m human.” Recently I saw this post on Facebook. “Instead of using ‘I’m human’ as an excuse to walk in the flesh, try using, ‘I’m saved’ as a reason to walk in the Spirit.” DEAL WITH YOUR ANGER BEFORE IT CAN DEVELOP INTO SIN. Early one morning I was driving down the road when a flock of blackbirds flew into my path. I thought they all narrowly escaped collid-

of redemption coming. “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30) Only the blood of Jesus can cleanse and wash away your sins. Choose to put away anger and “evil speaking.” (Ephesians 4:31) Be positive and kind. “And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32) “Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’ . . . ‘This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.’” (Matthew 18:2122, 35) Do you have angry birds of stress or anger swooping around you? Give it to God. Forgive and love as Christ has loved and forgiven you.

politics &

OPINIONS

Yes, Take Oprah Seriously

If Hillary Clinton could deliver a political speech half as effectively as Oprah Winfrey, she might be president today. The actress, media mogul and erstwhile queen of daytime TV gave what, if she ever becomes president, will be known to history as the Golden Globes Address. The first de facto convention speech ever delivered at an awards show, it brought down the house and predictably stoked talk of Oprah 2020.

In the era Before Trump, this would have been risible. Once upon a time, military service, political experience, a policy portfolio and national-security chops were mandatory to plausibly run for president. That time feels like a long time ago. What Donald Trump proved is that a celebrity with charisma, performative ability and gobs of free media can, in the right circumstances, stomp conventional politicians who lack all three. People who were merely governors and senators, who had never really performed on a big stage or truly mastered the media (they were just politicians, after all), stood at a distinct disadvantage. A common cold-water argument against Oprah running is that Democrats will want the opposite of

Trump in 2020, an experienced, boring politico who's well-versed in the issues and a reliably competent executive. This line works on paper. Republicans said the same thing about Barack Obama, who prior to 2008 had come as close to genuine celebrityhood as a working politician can get. Yet Donald Trump succeeded where the worthy, earnest, managerial Mitt Romney failed. On the current trajectory, what Democrats will most need in 2020 is someone with a big enough personality that Trump can't diminish and negatively brand him or her. This is what he did wit h t he rest of t he Republican field and Hillary Clinton in 2016, and he easily could do the same against "Pocahontas," aka Elizabeth Warren, and "Crazy Bernie" Sanders. Oprah, used to commanding a massive microphone and managing a matchless brand, might be relatively immune to this treatment. She'd be the empathetic healer, the advocate of abused women, running to make history in the

shadow of the civil-rights movement. If, that is, she's truly interested. Even the best campaigns have down cycles and bring humiliations of the sort celebrities usually avoid. Why would Oprah, who at the moment never has to encounter anyone who isn't in awe of her, want to sign up for that? Half the country would, by definition, begin to dislike her. She would have to fight with that part of the

Youth Soccer League

ed from public view. If Oprah ran and lost, she'd become a failed presidential candidate and could presumably never quite return to being Oprah Winfrey again. In short, there are compelling reasons for her not to make the plunge. The inherent absurdity of the idea is not one of them. where. Close it out and move on to a brighter romantic aspect just beginning to manifest itself. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Things don’t go completely as planned this week. But enjoy the surprises, even if you have to adjust your schedule. Some of them could be quite delightful. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Making choices is usually easy for straight-shooting Archers. But a new development could deflect your aim. Try to put off decisions until you know more. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While part of you might prefer taking a more familiar path, let your more daring and -- admit it -- super-curious self see what the unexplored has to offer. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Those nasty types have slithered back under the rocks and present no more problems. Now’s the time to move ahead on that promising new relationship. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new offer could clear up that lingering money problem. Also, a more confident attitude on your part might well help get that personal situation back on track. A more positive aspect starts to appear by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re torn between your sensible self and the part of you that enjoys acquiring lovely things. Best advice: Wait for an end-of-month sale, and then buy something wonderful. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your artistic side has practical applications this week, such as redecorating your home or redesigning your personal stationery. Whatever you do, someone special will like it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You could be drawn into a problem ‘twixt friends or family members. Best bet: Ask the questions that go to the heart of the matter, then get them all together for a group hug. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As much as you love being the center of attention, your big Lion’s heart impels you to share the spotlight with a colleague who helped you with that wellpraised project. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your eagerness to act on a challenge is wisely tempered early in the week by a lack of necessary information. Things begin to clear up during the weekend. Chicken Outside The Box It's no secret I'm more of a white meat and seafood fan, and with chicken just about being my favorite, I'm always on the lookout for new and different chicken recipes. I try to think outside the box, so my family and friends always look forward to something new and delicious. Just a few of my favorite chicken dishes are below. Hope you will enjoy them. If there's something you would like to see in the cooking column please let us know by email or letter, or call the office and let us know. In the meantime enjoy these new dishes.

Grilled Ginger-Orange Chicken

Butter-flavored vegetable cooking spray 3 green onions, sliced diagonally 1 small sweet red pepper, cut into julienne strips 2 T. butter or margarine, melted 6 fresh mushrooms, sliced 1/4 cup white wine Worcestershire sauce

Combine first 3 ingredients in small bowl; set aside. Place chicken breasts between two sheets of heavy-duty plastic wrap. Flatten to 1/4" thickness, using meat mallet; set aside. Cut cheese into four 2½"x1"x1/4" strips. Place a cheese strip in center of each chicken breast. Spoon stuffing mixture evenly over cheese; fold sides of chicken breast over stuffing. Roll up chicken breast, and secure with wooden pick. Dip chicken in egg; roll in bread crumbs, and place in lightly greased 8" square baking dish. Spray chicken breast with cooking spray. Bake at 375° for 35 minutes or until done. Remove from oven, and spray with cooking spray. Sauté sliced green onions and red pepper strips in 2 T. melted butter until vegetables are crisp tender. Stir in sliced mushrooms and Worcestershire sauce; spoon vegetables over chicken. Serve immediately. Yield: 4 servings.

Mediterranean Chicken

1/4 cup orange marmalade 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 2 T. orange juice 2 green onions, finely chopped

6 chicken breast halves, skinned Ginger Butter (recipe below) Garnishes: orange wedges, kale, and green onion and orange rind strips

3 T. olive oil 4 chicken leg-thigh combinations, skinned 1 medium onion, sliced and separated into rings 2 large cloves garlic, crushed 1 cup dried tomatoes 1½ cups tomato juice

Combine first 4 ingredients; brush on both sides of chicken breasts. Grill chicken, uncovered, over medium coals 9 to 10 minutes on each side or until done. Serve with Ginger Butter; garnish if desired. Yield: 6 servings.

Ginger Butter

1 (2 oz.) can anchovies, drained and chopped 1/2 cup pitted ripe olives 1/3 cup capers 1 T. dried Italian herbs 1 T. balsamic vinegar 1/8 tsp. red pepper flakes

Heat oil in large skillet over medium high heat; add chicken, and sauté 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Remove chicken from skillet; set aside. Add onion rings and garlic to skillet; sauté over medium heat until onion is tender. Stir in dried tomatoes and remaining ingredients; add chicken, and bring mixture to boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 45 minutes or until chicken is tender; stir occasionally. Serve immediately. Yield: 4 servings.

1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 1/2 tsp. grated orange rind
