Red Cross Winter Blood Shortage Reaches Critical Level Ongoing severe winter weather has more than doubled the number of canceled American Red Cross blood drives and the resulting blood and platelet donation shortfall since earlier this month. The Red Cross now considers the situation critical and is reissuing an urgent call for blood and platelet donors. More than 550 blood drives have been forced to cancel due to winter weather in January, causing over 16,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected through last week. In addition, bitter cold and widespread flu have contributed to very low turnout at many blood drives. “Blood and platelet donations are currently being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in,” said Joe Zydlo, external communications manager, Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region. “Donors are critically needed to restock the shelves for patients in their community as well as areas where donors are unable to give due to inclement weather.” Every day, no matter the weather, the Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood and platelet donations to meet the needs of patients like Finnegan “Finn” Olson. Last January, Finn was born with a rare heart condition. He required multiple transfusions before, during and after heart transplant surger y last summer. Transfusions had an almost immediate effect on his personality and skin’s appearance. “Each time Finn received a transfusion, you could see him pink up right away and

Finn is living proof that blood helps save lives.” Make an appointment to give blood or platelets by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood. org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at redcrossblood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. ended up chewing it to splinters, which I know is really dangerous. How can I stop him? — Gayle in Winter Garden, Florida

Getting the Bandit to Drop That Loot DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My dog "Bandit" will eat anything he finds on our daily walks. He's really fast, and by the time I try to stop him he usually has it in his mouth. He will not follow my command to drop it. Yesterday, he snapped up a pork chop bone that had fallen from our neighbor's trash can, and I could not pry it from his teeth. He

DEAR GAYLE: You'll have to work hard on his basic obedience training, and reinforce the "leave it" command. This can take awhile and be especially frustrating with strongwilled dogs, but as you know, the consequences of eating unknown stuff off the ground can be deadly. Not to alarm those who are new to the dog training game: Dogs often eat things we would never come close to as humans, and most of the time these things pass through their systems with little to no trouble. But a splintered chicken bone or

a piece of cloth — these can cause a lot of problems with the digestive system and send your pet to the emergency veterinarian. During his refresher training, keep Bandit on the leash during your walk and when training. Work on the "sit" command. Dr. Sophia Yin recommends treat-based training as you move into the "leave it" command training. While the process would take too long to explain here, you can find details at her website: drsophiayin.com. Search for: Dogs Who Eat Things Off the Ground. Remember to work with Bandit in a calm manner, away from other dogs and distractions.

OPINIONS

Shimkus Nominates 19 To Military Service Academies C ongressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) today announced his 19 nominations to the military service academies. The congressman nominates, and then the academies themselves make the final determination whether a nominee receives an appointment to attend that academy. “The academies look at academics, leadership, and physical fitness in order to assure a young person is wellrounded and able to cope with the unique challenges of attending a military school,” Shimkus, himself a graduate of West Point, said. “I am very proud of these young men and women for considering an

academy for their college choice and am grateful for the honor of being able to nominate them.” The four military academies that require congressional nominations are the: United States Militar y Academy (USMA), located in West Point, New York; United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), located in Colorado Springs, Colorado; United St ates Nava l Academy (USNA), located in Annapolis, Maryland; and United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), located in Kings Point, New York. members of the military who are residents of the 15th District and wish to attend an academy beginning in 2019 can start the dual application process now by registering on the academy’s website. An individual may be nominated to more than one academy. *Note: Nominations to the Merchant Marine Academy can be made for prospective students statewide.

There is certainly a lot on our plate this year, starting with the budget, the bills and the debt. The state’s economy has been long-ignored too. That’s because for too long, ideological politics have come to dominate the debate and the decision-making in

Springfield. In a recent report by the Illinois Policy Institute, Illinois’ economy lost the benefits of $3.4 billion in income to neighboring states from 2010 through 2015. During this time, Illinois was among the top states for out-migra-

tion. As I reported earlier this month, Illinois had the highest rate of out-migration among the 50 states in 2017. Since 2008, Illinois has ranked in the top-five states for out-migration. In 2016, Illinois lost more residents than any other state. These facts tell us the political ideology of continued larger and more expensive government is not working. People are fleeing failure. The partisan political atmosphere that has dominated Springfield is not working. Last month was the 10th anniversary of the start of the Great Recession. Experts tell us it lasted 18 months; but incredibly, while the rest of the country has long been in the midst of recovery since the Great Recession ended in June of 2009, Illinois continues to struggle with anemic economic growth. According to a recent report by the state’s Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability (CoGFA), “Illinois’ total real GDP grew from $671 billion in 2007 to $696 billion in 2016. This equals total growth of only 3.8%. This compares to

growth of 9.1% for the rest of the Midwest and 10.7% for the U.S.” 2018 is an election year. Make those running for office pay attention. Demand change. Demand results. If we are serious about addressing Illinois’ fiscal crisis, we must implement reforms making government more efficient and accountable. It means not spending money we don’t have and being honest with the people about what we can afford. Getting our fiscal house in order inspires confidence among risk takers to invest in people and property. We simply cannot fix our state finances and take care of our responsibilities without restoring the state economy. That takes meaningful reform. We need fewer regulatory burdens, removing the roadblocks to job growth by boosting business expansion and retention. Without a growing economy Illinois can’t get out of debt, nor will we have the opportunity and prosperity we need to provide the jobs our citizens desire.

Pictured are Mr. Hayden Wimberly of Salem, Mr. Pattrick Sherrod of Effingham, Congressman John Shimkus, Mr. Jarrett Jones of Effingham, and Mr. Zachary Keitel of Effingham.

Super Bowl Party Dinner Super Bowl is next Sunday, February 4. Don't ask me who's playing, but if you're one of those who have a party, why not serve up piping hot fried chicken, with potato salad and baked beans. Yummy! That makes it worth having a Super Bowl party. Add some festive paper plates and napkins with colored plastic folks — of course, guest choice, the color of their pick.

Fabulous Fried Chicken 1 (2½- to 3-lb.) frying chicken, cut into 8 parts 2 cups buttermilk or clabbered milk 1/8 tsp. Tabasco Vegetable oil for frying

Place chicken pieces in large bowl and pour buttermilk or clabbered milk and Tabasco over chicken. Turn pieces so they are evenly coated with milk. Cover bowl and let chicken soak in refrigerator at least 2 hours but no longer than overnight. Turn pieces once or twice. When ready to cook chicken, pour off and discard soaking milk. Heat about 1/2' of vegetable oil in 2 large frying pans (preferably cast-iron skillets) set over medium-high heat. Combine flour, cornmeal, salt, and pepper in paper or plastic bag and shake damp chicken pieces in seasoned flour. Shake off as much excess flour as possible so the coating won't be too thick. When oil is hot, arrange chicken pieces in single layer in skillets and fry, uncovered, until crusty, deep golden brown, and meat is no longer pink near bone when checked with point of sharp knife. Regulate heat so chicken does not burn. Cook breast and wing pieces about 18 minutes; thighs and drumsticks about 22 minutes. Remove chicken with tongs and drain on crumpled paper towels. Serve hot, warm, or at room temperature. If chicken has sat for more than 2 hours at room temperature and has gotten soggy, it may be somewhat recrisped in a 400° oven. Arrange in single layer on baking sheet and heat, uncovered, 10 minutes. Yield: 4 servings. Note: If buttermilk is unavailable, make clabbered milk by adding 2 tsp. lemon juice to 2 cups whole milk. Let stand at room temperature about 15 minutes.

Scrub potatoes. Leave whole if small. If larger, cut into 2" chunks. Cook in boiling salted water until just tender when pierced with metal skewer or point of sharp knife, about 20 minutes. Drain, and when cool enough to handle, slice potatoes about 1/8" thick. Place warm potato slices in large bowl and toss with olive oil, wine, and vinegar. Set aside until potatoes are tepid and liquid is absorbed. In small bowl, whisk together sour cream, mustard, shallots, salt, and pepper. Pour dressing over potatoes and toss gently so it evenly coats them. Sprinkle minced parsley and chives over salad and gently toss again. Preheat oven to 350°. In large skillet, sauté onion and garlic in butter over medium-low heat for 3 minutes until softened. Add chili sauce, maple syrup, water, rum, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, curry powder, salt, and pepper to skillet and bring to simmer over medium heat. Cook about 2 minutes to blend flavors. Put beans in deep 2-quart casserole (not shallow baking dish), pour sauce over them, and stir gently to combine. Beans will look very soupy at this point, but sauce thickens a lot as it cooks. Lay 3 or 4 strips of bacon over top of casserole and place in preheated oven. Bake 1 hour, or until sauce is bubbly and bacon is cooked. If bacon is not crisp enough, run casserole under broiler about 1 minute to brown. Beans should have plenty of sauce. If they look at all dry, add up to 1/2 cup water as they finish cooking. Yield: 6 to 8 servings. *** Until next week, Au Revoir! —Elizabeth Fenton

Surviving the Apocalypse When I was in the hospital dealing with some health issues, my daughter told me that my eight-year-old grandson prayed for me, “God, help papa survive the apocalypse.” He made my day. I don’t know if his prayer was prophetic or if he plays too many video games, but I believe it was sincere and faith-filled. I survived. I’m glad he didn’t pray, “God, help papa sur vive the autopsy.” A definition of apocalypse is, “prophecy of a cataclysm in which evil forces are destroyed.” The word is derived

from the Greek word “apokalypsis” as in Revelation 1:1 which means “unveiling,” and is applied to certain books and canons of scripture that contain revelations of the secret purposes of God, the end of the world as we know it and the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth.” The apostle Peter quoted from the prophet Joel concerning the last days, “And I shall show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.

1. Is the Book of 2 Timothy in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. From Ruth 1, who called herself Marah, a name meaning "bitter"? Priscilla, Miriam, Naomi, Deborah

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re eager to take on that new opportunity opening up as January gives way to February. Now all you need to do is resist quitting too early. Do your best to stay with it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Doff a bit of that careful, conservative outlook and let your brave Bovine self take a chance on meeting that new challenge. You could be surprised at how well you do. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might not want to return to the more serious tasks facing you. But you know it’s what you must do. Cheer up. Something more pleasant soon will occupy your time. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) As you dutifully tidy up your end-of-themonth tasks, your fun self emerges to urge you to do something special: A trip (or a cruise, maybe?) could be just what you need. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your achievements are admirable as you close out the month with a roar. Now you can treat yourself to some wellearned time off for fun with family or friends. (Or both!) VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be sure you know the facts before you assume someone is holding back on your project. Try to open your mind before you give someone a piece of it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might feel comfortable in your familiar surroundings, but it

might be time to venture into something new. There’s a challenge out there that’s just right for you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your love of things that are new gets a big boost as you encounter a situation that opens up new and exciting vistas. How far you go with it depends on you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) That recent workplace shift might not seem to be paying off as you expected. But be patient. There are changes coming that could make a big difference. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While few can match the Goat’s fiscal wizardry, you still need to be wary in your dealings. There might be a problem you should know about sooner rather than later. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Easy does it when it comes to love and all the other good things in life. Don’t try to force them to develop on your schedule. Best to let it happen naturally. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A surprise decision by someone you trust causes some stormy moments. But a frank discussion explains everything, and helps save a cherished relationship. BORN THIS WEEK: Sometimes you forget to take care of yourself, because you’re so busy caring for others. But you wouldn’t have it any other way. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Joel 2:28-32; Acts 2:17-31) Jesus himself said that there would be signs in the last days pointing to his return and the judgement of the nations, such as earthquakes, fearsome sights, and great signs from heaven. “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and the stars . . . the seas and the waves roaring.” (Luke 21:7-28) Recently we have seen blood red moons, a total solar eclipse, and a super moon. NASA reports that a super blue, blood red moon will occur with a total lunar eclipse on January 31, 2018, the first time in 150 years. In 2019 there will be another blue, blood red moon. Are these some of the signs pointing to the second coming of Jesus and the beginning of the apocalypse recorded in the book of Revelation? Jesus said, “But of that day and hour, no one knows . . . but only the Father.” (Mark

13:32-33) But he also said, “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” (Luke 21:28) This speaks of anticipation and hope when God sets up the kingdom of his Son on earth and evil is vanquished. Jesus told us how to survive the apocalypse whenever it comes. I believe he gave us a promise and his “escape” plan. “Watch, therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass and stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:36) WATCH. Live with anticipation and the hope of his coming. “Behold, I come

3. What did Malachi say the people of Judah were stealing from God? Servants, Unrighteous miracles, Holy Grail, Owed tithes 4. Which was a city of Ephraim and home of the

soon.” (Revelation 3:11) PRAY ALWAYS. Pray the prayer of repentance. (Acts 2:38) Prayerfully commune daily with the Lord. (Revelation 3:20) Paul prayed, “Now may the God of Peace himself sanctify you completely and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Thessalonians 5:16-24) BE COUNTED WORTHY. Only faith in the blood of Christ shed on the cross can make one worthy. (I Peter 1:3-12, 19) Prayer keeps the fiery passion of Christ burning in your soul. TO ESCAPE ALL THESE THINGS. Fearful things are coming upon the earth. It’s called the “time of Jacob’s

trouble” or “the great tribulation.” Jesus said there is an escape plan. Paul wrote of the catching up or rapture of the church to meet the Lord in the clouds before the “day of the Lord.” (I Thessalonians 4:13-18; 5:1-9) TO STAND BEFORE THE SON OF MAN. For those who faithfully follow and serve the Lord Jesus, it will be a day of joy and honor to stand before the King of all Kings. Perhaps my grandson’s prayer was prophetic. Are you prepared to survive the apocalypse? Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com
