Kathryn Harris Portrays Harriet Tubman In honor of Black History Month, Kathryn Harris, a regional historian and retired library services director at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, will portray Harriet Tubman and tell her life story in a presentation at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 17 in the Schweinfurth Museum at the Jefferson County Historical Village. Linking the past with the present, Kathryn Harris slips into the persona of the former slave who, after winning her own freedom, became a conductor on the Underground Railroad in the mid-1800s. In numerous trips back into the South, Harriet Tubman helped more than 300 slaves, including her own parents, escape to the North. After the Civil War broke out, she worked for the Union as a cook, a nurse, and even a spy. Harris has been telling the amazing story of Tubman’s faith, determination and courage for over a decade. This program is sponsored by Peoples National Bank. It is provided free of charge, but donations are appreciated. The Jefferson County Historical Village is located at 1411 North 27th Street in Mt. Vernon. For more information contact the Historical Society office at 618-246-0033. Pictured is Kathryn Harris in her role as Harriet Tubman.

MSNBC, ABC, NBC, The Washington Post, etc. — who are too busy slamming the President. Why would they want to do real news like pointing out the great things he has done. Possibly you need to change the networks you watch as well as the late night un-American shows with hosts that are not just nasty but are also totally disrespectful. In other words, it doesn't matter what Trump does. Many of the liberals will pick it apart and continue on with a rash of fake news. Moving on to, "How did we get here?" Too bad that question wasn't asked of President Obama and the Democrats while it was happening. Now the national debt has skyrocketed
The Shoppers Weekly – Mt. Vernon Area passed last week after a brief shutdown. That could be the other reason the media doesn't talk about it. Obama is still responsible for the national debt. Hopefully that answers the questions. However, there is more to this. Obama would have inherited some of the cost of Katrina as well as the war on terror. Then he came in with his stimulus act, giving $400 billion to businesses (some after going bankrupt). So he inherited some, but he also spent a lot. The fact still remains that under Barack Obama the national debt grew the most dollar-wise. He added $7.9 trillion, a 68% increase, in just seven years. Under George W. Bush, $5.9 trillion, the second greatest amount, was added. The time to look at the national debt under Trump will be November 2019. So to accuse Trump of being responsible for national debt now is somewhat premature. So in closing, let me say the national debt is more to the point that our grand- than $20 trillion. A topic that I am frequently asked about is what can be done about the national debt. Before Trump was elected, it seemed to be a hot topic, but since the election it's not talked about as much. It's not that it's been forgotten about, it's just that it is a problem that won't be solved overnight. A much more interesting question is how did we get here? I'm going to do my best to answer this question as professionally as possible. Many liberals have said that it was only talked about "loudly and often" before the election because they saw it as empty campaign rhetoric. That is not true. It is talked about, but just not covered by the liberal media networks — like CNN,

This Valentine Is For You For over a decade I’ve had a prescription bottle on my dresser. In it is one of my most cherished possessions. My granddaughter was only five or six when I took her to the city park. I sat on a park bench

She placed a small heart shaped rock in my hand. It’s still one of my most cherished possessions. That incident taught me a lot. One thing it taught me was that love covers a multitude of sins. A woman wrote of her experience growing up, longing for someone to love her. She lived in a poor, single parent home. In elementary school, children would bring Valentines to school giving them to their friends on Valentine’s Day. She made one for each of her classmates. But on that special day, she only received one Valentine — from her teacher. She was devastated. After years of longing for love, she found herself in a church and heard a message that transformed her life — God loved her unconditionally! When Jesus first met John and his brother James, he named them “Boanerges, Sons of Thunder,” because of their volatile and quick temper. But the love of God transformed them! John became known as “John, the beloved.” The love of God became his overwhelming message. “This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into

the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins . . . God is love. Whoever lives in love, lives in God and God in them.” (I John 4:7-16) LOVE’S COMMAND. Love is not just an emotion or a warm fuzzy feeling. It is an act of the will, a command. “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.” (I John 4:7) He has given us a command. (I John 4:21) LOVE’S SOURCE. Love comes from God. It’s the highest level of love. “Because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 5:5) The Mississippi starts as a stream of water you can walk across, but it develops into a mighty river. Walk into God’s love in Christ and His river of love will flow into and out of you. LOVE’S EVIDENCE. Many people claim to
know God, but we have the true evidence. “Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is love.” (I John 4:7-8) LOVE’S ESSENCE. Everything about God can be distilled into this one scripture. “God is love.” Perfume is made by distilling certain fragrant flowers. God’s love has a fragrance. Out of her love for Jesus, a woman broke an expensive bottle of perfume and poured it on Jesus. It was an extravagant act of devotion. (Matthew 26:7; Genesis 8:20-21) The essence of God is love. How could anyone in their right mind not want to live in His love? LOVE’S DEMONSTRATION. “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world.” (I John 4:9-10; Romans 5:8) Why is the color of Valentine’s Day red? Why is the symbol/
emblem a heart? I believe it is because God’s heart of love sent His Son to die on the cross for the sins of the world. LOVE’S EXPRESSION. Someone aptly said, “Love is not love until it’s given away. “Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.” (I John 4:19-21) LOVE’S EXTINGUISHER. “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.” (I John 4:18) The more you know and experience God’s love, the less fear you will have to contend with. Your Savior, Jesus, the Master Gardener, has planted you where you are today — refreshing you with His mercy and nourishing you with His Word. As you bloom, may you display the beauty of His grace and share the fragrance of His love. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

The New York Rangers (1926-27) and the Edmonton Oilers (197980). 6. Czechoslovakia. 7. Rory McIlroy, in 2011.

That track, by the way, is used for the Biathlon, a competition that strikes many people in America as being a bit weird. Curling, we already knew was weird, but it at least reminds us of shuffleboard. For many, the Biathlon is just too foreign a concept. At least in some parts of the country or, as I learned on a radio show I hosted, college campuses. "The Biathlon is the most ridiculous sport there is," charged the liberal, tenured professor, aptly positioned to my left. "Skiing with guns. What's next? Hand grenades and ice dancing?" Having once dated a mountain girl, I reminded him that skiing and shooting were a perfect combination. I knew of hunters who

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It could be risky to push for a project you believe in but others are wary of. Never mind. If you trust your facts, follow your courageous Aries heart and go with it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your enthusiasm sparks renewed interest in a workplace project that once seemed headed for deletion. Support from supervisors helps you make all necessary changes. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A colleague might be a bit too contrary when your ideas are being discussed in the workplace. A demand for an explanation could produce some surprises all around. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Try to avoid distractions at a time when maintaining stability in a fluid situation is essential. There’ll be time enough later for the Moon Child to enjoy some well-earned fun and games. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Stop wasting energy licking your wounded pride. Instead, put the lessons you learned from that upsetting experience to good use in an upcoming opportunity. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You love being busy. But try not to make more work for yourself than you need to. Get help so that you don’t wind up tackling tasks that are better left to others. cross-country skied while hunting grouse, for instance. There used to be a deer-hunting event in the Olympics, too. And there is little doubt that those in the biathlon are athletes. "These are the best hunters in the world. If we lived near the ice cap, these are the guys you want to have with you — someone who can outlast their prey and take it down with one neatly placed bullet," I observed, rather astutely. Plus, I argued, target shooting was very sporting, and hunting was a great recreational pursuit. "Well, I'm vegetarian," said the young student on the discussion panel. "Why would we need guns if we didn't kill animals?" Well, duh ... to fight wars. Silly question.
assessing situations could be compromised by some so-called new facts. Check them out before making any shift in judgment. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might feel angry over an unexpected shift in attitude by someone you trusted. But this could soon turn in your favor as more surprising facts come out. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Love rules everywhere for all amorous Archers, single or attached. It’s also a good time to restore friendships that might have frayed over the years. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It’s not always easy for the proud Goat to forgive past slights. But clearing the air could help establish a better climate for that important upcoming venture. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Good news: Your skillful handling of a recent matter has won admiration from someone who could be influential in any upcoming decisions involving you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You continue to welcome new friends into the widening circle of people whom you hold dear. One of those newcomers might soon have something special to tell you. BORN THIS WEEK: You love nature and inspire others to follow your example of concern for the planet’s well-being. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Chocolate Indulgence
1½ cups heavy cream 1 (8") baked Chocolate Truffle Cake 7 oz. almond paste Powdered sugar Chocolate Glaze
In food processor, combine chocolate chips and hot coffee. Process until mixture is smooth. With machine on, add egg yolks and vanilla through feed tube. Then add butter, piece by piece, through feed tube, processing until well blended. Transfer mixture to large bowl. In medium bowl beat cream until stiff. Blend large spoonful of whipped cream into chocolate mixture. Then fold in remaining cream. Line 1½-quart heatproof glass bowl with plastic wrap, leaving about 5" extending over each side. Spoon chocolate mixture into bowl. Bring overhanging plastic wrap up over top to cover. Freeze several hours or overnight, until firm. To assemble dessert, carefully remove Chocolate Truffle Cake from springform pan and invert onto serving plate; remove foil from cake. Remove bowl of frozen chocolate mousse mixture from freezer. Invert mousse to unmold on top of truffle cake, rounded-side up. Refrigerate. Flatten almond paste and place between 2 sheets of wax paper sprinkled with powdered sugar. Using rolling pin, roll from center out in all directions to /16" thickness, or until large enough to fit completely over domed surface and cake. Refrigerate almond paste 10 minutes. Remove top sheet of wax paper and invert almond paste onto mousse-topped cake. Remove paper from almond paste and press gently all over dome-shaped surface of mousse and cake. Trim any edges of almond paste, if necessary. Refrigerate 1/2 hour. Pour Chocolate Glaze evenly over entire cake. Spread with knife or spatula to cover. Refrigerate cake until chocolate is set. Cut into wedges to serve. Serves 12 to 16.
Chocolate Truffle Cake 2 sticks (8 oz.) butter 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee 4 eggs
6 oz. semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, cut up 2 (1 oz.) squares unsweetened chocolate, cut up
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line 8" springform pan with boil, butter foil generously. Dust with flour; tap out excess. In 2-quart glass bowl combine butter, sugar, coffee, semisweet chocolate and unsweetened chocolate. Heat in microwave oven on high 1½ to 2 minutes, or until chocolate and butter are melted and mixture is smooth when stirred. Remove from heat. Whisk in eggs until smooth and well blended. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 50 to 55 minutes, or until top has a crust and is dry to the touch. Let cool in pan. Run sharp knife around edges to loosen cake and remove springform side of pan. Invert cake to unmold, peel off foil, then place cake right side up on serving plate. Store cake, covered, in refrigerator or freezer. Serves 10 to 12.
We reserve the right to limit quantities and correct printing errors.
Dash of salt 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
In 1-quart glass bowl combine butter, corn syrup, salt, and 2 T. water. Heat in microwave oven on high 1 to 1½ minutes, or until boiling, stirring once. Stir in chocolate chips until glaze is melted and smooth. Set aside to cool to room temperature and thicken slightly to spreading consistency. Glaze should not be thick. *** Until next week, Au Revoir! —Elizabeth Fenton

Large Head Lettuce
Preheat oven to 325°F. To prepare crust, in medium bowl, combine cookie crumbs and butter; mix until well blended. Press into bottom and halfway up sides of greased 8½" or 9" springform pan. Line outside of pan with double thickness of aluminum foil, bringing foil up around sides to prevent butter from leaking out of pan. In large bowl, beat together cream cheese and sugar with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Beat in eggs and vanilla until smooth, about 2 minutes. Then beat in white chocolate until smooth. Pour filling into prepared crust. Bake 60 to 65 minutes, or until cake barely jiggles in center. Let cake cool, then refrigerate until chilled, 6 hours or overnight. Run sharp knife around edge of pan to loosen cake and remove springform side of pan. Serves: 8 to 10

Donors Urged To Help The Red Cross Maintain Blood Supply Winter storms and the flu don’t just mean a lot of people are missing work and school – it also means they can’t keep their American Red Cross blood and platelet donation appointments. The Red Cross is urging healthy donors of all blood types to roll up a sleeve to help maintain the blood supply for patients in need. In 2018, severe winter weather forced about 600 blood drives to cancel, resulting in more than 17,500 uncollected blood and platelet donations. And, widespread flu across the U.S. has resulted in lower turnout at blood drives. Blood and platelet donations are needed in the coming days to help replenish the blood supply and ensure patients continue to receive lifesaving treatments. Donors can help even more patients when they invite a loved one, friend or co-worker to give with them. Make an appointment to donate this winter by
downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Upcoming are blood donation opportunities are listed below. Jefferson County Feb. 22, 3 p.m. - 7 p.m., Donoho Prairie Christian Church, 7405 Exchange Road, Texico. Washington County Feb. 28, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Nashville High School, 1300 South Mill, Nashville. To donate blood simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood. org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who
are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at redcrossblood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Another way to support the life-saving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer blood donor ambassador. The role is simple, but it is critical to our success. The Red Cross is looking for people to assist with recep-
tion, greeting donors and hospitality (offering refreshments) at blood drives. The objective is to provide the blood donors with a positive experience. For more information about volunteering contact Kristin Pendleton 314-2817968 or Kristin.Pendleton@ redcross.org The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit redcross. org or cruzrojaamericana. org, or visit them on Twitter at @RedCross.
Youthbuild Program Now Accepting Applications The YouthBuild program of Marion and Jefferson Counties is currently taking applications for youth between the ages of 17 and 24 years old in need of their high school equivalency (HSE) diploma. Applications can be submitted from now until March 31. Mental Toughness, two weeks focused on responsibility and goal setting, will begin April 2 –April 13. “This program is for any young adult who is in need
of their HSE or GED. We will work with these individuals for nine months to help them study for their test and teach them work skills, so they can provide for themselves and their families,” says Ryan Alton, YouthBuild Program Manager. YouthBuild is a program of Spero Family Services, and is federally funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. This program helps young adults in our own commu-
nity, living in a lower-income household and without a high school education, be able to earn a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, learn valuable work skills, and place them in jobs to earn money. “It is a great program for young people. Two days each week is spent in HSE or GED classes. Two days are spent in a work study program, either in construction training or certified nurse assistant training. Fridays are a half day
