YouthBuild Students Build Dog Houses By Cathy Stuehmeier

YouthBuild, a program of Spero Family Services, is at it again. This time they are doing what they do best, not just lending a helping hand but also picking up a hammer, not just for people but for man's best friend, by building dog houses for the second time. The results are twofold. It gives these young men and women the chance to learn a valuable trade and also contribute to their communities under the guidance of construction trainers Rick Daniels and

Bob Northup as well as Assistant Program Manager Cheryl Young. These students from Marion and Jefferson Counties and surrounding areas just completed six well-built dog houses with materials donated by the City of Centralia. When I asked student Kaitlynn Bergeson what she thought about the project she said, "I like it. We all made something so that dogs could have shelter."

5 tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper 1/ 2 tsp. red pepper (optional) Tabasco sauce to taste 2 to 3 bay leaves 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 T. lemon juice 4 lbs. peeled raw shrimp 1/2 cup chopped parsley 2 to 3 cups cooked rice

Locally Owned & Operated since 1988

4⅓ cups all purpose flour 1½ cups water 2½ tsp. salt 2½ tsp. sugar 2 T. lard or Crisco

Combine first 5 ingredients in large mixing bowl; mix with heavy duty electric mixer at high speed 5 minutes. Place dough in lightly greased large bowl, turning to grease top. Cover dough and let rise in warm place (85°) free from drafts for 4 hours. Return dough to large mixing bowl. Add remaining ingredients and beat at high speed 10 to 12 minutes. Turn dough into 5 equal portions and shape each portion into a 14 inch loaf. Place loaves on greased baking sheets. Put pan of boiling water on lower rack of oven to obtain steam. Bake at 425° for 25 to 30 minutes or until done. Dough may also be braided in one large loaf.

Coconut Pound Cake 1 lb. (6 sticks) margarine 3 cups sugar 3 cups flour 9 eggs

2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp. salt 1½ cans flaked coconut

Cream margarine, add sugar slowly, and cream well. Add 4 eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add remaining 5 eggs alternately with flour and salt, beginning and ending with flour. Add vanilla and mix well. Lastly, fold in coconut carefully by hand. (Do not use a mixer here, as it will cause the cake to fall slightly.) Pour into large tube pan and bake in 325° oven 1 hour and 45 minutes. Start the cake in a cool oven — do not preheat. An ordinary angel food pan is too small for this cake. Test cake with toothpick for doneness. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. The Shoppers Weekly – Centralia / Salem Area the horse — it was fine — with no scar or sign that it had ever been injured. Her husband never drank again and became a cowboy preacher. I want to challenge you to pray your bravest prayer. ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD. God promised Abraham a son, even though he and his wife were old. We have this remarkable scripture, “Abraham believed the Lord and he credited it to him as righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6) Faith in God alone makes one righteous. (Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17; 3:24) Abraham sacrificed to the Lord and birds of prey came down to devour the sacrifice. (Genesis 15:7-11) Abraham drove them away. When you begin to walk in the blessing of Abraham, you may have to chase the birds of doubt, unbelief, and accusation away. (James 4:7-11) Three heavenly visitors

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Abraham tithed him a tenth of everything he had recovered. (Genesis 14:17-20) Malachi prophesied the promise of the Lord to “open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing” and “rebuke the devourer,” for those who tithed to God. (Malachi 3:10-11) ABR AHAM PR AYED BRAVE PRAYERS. Abraham encountered the Lord and prayed, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless?” (Genesis 15:2-3) Sarah was 90 years old and Abraham was pushing 100! Abraham prayed another brave prayer for his nephew, Lot. God revealed to Abraham that he was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham prayed an audacious prayer asking God to spare the city for the sake of even 10 righteous people. God sent an angel to lead Lot and his family out before it was destroyed with fire and brimstone. Soon after marriage, Sandy discovered that her husband was an alcoholic. She prayed for him for 10 years. One day one of her husband’s expensive horses severely cut its leg. The vet said that it would never be able to walk again without a pronounced limp. Sandy offered to pray for the horse. Her husband replied, “It would be a miracle if the horse walks again. But if God heals him, I’ll never touch another drop of liquor again.” Sandy laid hands on the horse’s leg and prayed. The next morning, they went to check

The Blessing of Abraham The patriarch Abraham is revered by Jews, Muslims, and Christians. Jesus referred to Lazarus the beggar as being in “the bosom of Abraham,” after he died. (Luke 16) Paul reveals that through the Seed of Abraham, the blessing of Abraham came upon the gentiles. (Galatians 3:13-14) Examine the life of Abraham and see how to walk in the blessing of Abraham. ABRAHAM WAS AN ALTAR BUILDER. “So, Abraham went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.” (Genesis 13:18) Wherever Abraham went, he made an altar to the Lord and worshiped. The Hebrew word for “altar” is “mizbeah” — meaning “place of slaughter.” Altars were where animal sacrifices were made. The altar pointed to the sacrifice of the Lamb of God — Jesus Christ. There can be no redemption or true worship without the blood of Christ. (Hebrews 9:22; I Peter 1:17-21) ABRAHAM TITHED. When Abraham heard that his nephew, Lot, and his family had been taken into captivity, he led his 318 servants to rescue them from the armies of King Kedorlaomer. Coming back, he met Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of the Most-High God. He blessed Abraham and

met Abraham and the Lord repeated his promise of a son. Sarah laughed, “Then the Lord said to Abraham . . . Is there anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14) Get this truth deep in your heart. T H E B L E S SI N G O F ABRAHAM. Paul reveals this awesome truth, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us . . . that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” (Galatians 3:5-16) Are you walking in the blessing of Abraham? Put faith in Christ, the “Seed of Abraham.” “Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

YouthBuild Students Build Dog Houses Continued from page 1

Representatives from the City of Centralia who were present to accept the six dog houses were Gayla Harting, community development director, and Bob Patton, Jr., Centralia animal control officer and code enforcement official. Both Gayla and Bob were grateful for the completed project, but Bob Patton went on to praise YouthBuild for the donation and said, “I can’t thank the instructors and students enough for their contribution.”

Bob Patton, Jr. representing the City of Centralia, and construction trainer Rick Daniels. Along with the dog houses, YouthBuild students were hard at work building picnic tables for the fire training facility in Salem. They have also made picnic tables for the Jefferson County Housing Authority, among other projects.

Did you know? Cardiovascular diseases, which includes stroke, claim the lives of about one woman every 80 seconds unnecessarily — because about 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be preventable with education and action.

What is American Heart Month? American Heart Month, a federally designated event, is an ideal time to remind Americans to focus on their hearts and encourage them to get their

families, friends and communities involved. • The first American Heart Month, which took place in February 1964, was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson via Proclamation 3566 on

December 30, 1963. • The Congress, by joint resolution on that date, has requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating February as American Heart Month. • At that time, more than

half the deaths in the U.S. were caused by cardiovascular disease. • While American Heart Month is a federally designated month in the United States, it’s important to realize that cardiovascular disease knows no borders. Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, remains the leading global cause of death with more than 17.9 million deaths each year. • That number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030. • President Lyndon B. Johnson’s proclamation that first declared February as American Heart Month. Chances are, we all know someone affected by heart disease and stroke, because about 2,300 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day, an average of 1 death every 38 seconds. But together we can change that! National Wear Red Day® is Friday, February 2, 2018! Wear red to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and save lives. The biggest part of living

How to Prevent Heart Disease Do you take care of your family? Goes without saying. Do you take care of your home? Of course. Do you take care of your heart? Probably not. It may not be at the top of most women’s to-do lists, but caring for your heart through a healthy diet and regular physical activity is the secret weapon to preventing heart disease. While many may assume that popping a few pills that your healthcare provider prescribed is enough to quell symptoms or prevent a heart attack, the real preventative power lies with real changes to your lifestyle – which can reduce the risk for heart disease by

Project Bread Senior Valentines Party Project Bread held their annual Valentines Day Party on Wednesday, February 14 at the Golden Age Senior Center in Centralia. The group of seniors enjoyed snacks and a meal. Russell and Clara Sweet were crowned 2018

Valentines King and Queen. Runners up were Chuck and Lydia West along with Nancy and Russell Rothchild. The Project Bread Senior Council first nominates seniors to run for Valentine King and Queen; the can-

didates then must agree to run. The rest of the Project Bread seniors vote for the couple of their choice by monetary donations which are then used to fund activities such as trips for the group.

that's true, what does it say about her, and especially Barack Obama's administration and the agencies that functioned under him for eight years? In my opinion, if it's true, that shows the inadequacy of the FBI, CIA, NSA and other government agencies. After all, I was always told the buck stops at the boss's desk. Do I believe Trump or Clinton intervened? No, I don't. Do I think the Russians were involved? I would say it's very possible. A prime example is it's alleged that the Russians staged a pro-Trump and an anti-Trump rally on the very same day. What was the purpose other than creating confusion? I have heard more than once the way to destroy America is from within! The only response from Russian officials on the indictments was, so what! Until next time.

Russian meddling, from what I see not much is being done about it, and that's across the country. But let's take Illinois, for instance. Illinois was one of two states where voter registration databases were breached in 2016. Illinois requested an assessment in January and is still waiting, with less than one month to go before the election. Why would they wait that long? At this point it's pretty clear there was attempted Russian intervention into the 2016 general elections, so it's not a matter of whether someone is going to try to breach our system. The question is, who? And to me, the bigger question is, what's being done about it? But backing up to 2016, there's absolutely no evidence that any hack in the election affected the outcome. Last week there were thirteen Russian nationals as well as three Russian companies indicted by the Justice Department for intervention in the U.S. 2016 Presidential election. Of course, Nancy Pelosi immediately started pointing the finger at Donald Trump. What she may not have thought about is, if

This week is nothing but questions. Let me start by saying my heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims of the most recent mass school shooting in Florida last week. Since Sandy Hook there have been a dozen of these senseless crimes, and let's not forget Columbine. It's a sad day that parents have to fear sending their children to school, church or even a theater. I wish I had a solution to this overwhelming, heartbreaking issue. We can all talk about gun control, the NRA bad parenting, the schools, law enforcement, our mental health system, and other finger pointing and placing blame. The fact does remain that on this most recent shooting — leaving 17 dead and 20 injured — there were signs of deep problems to come, and they were ignored or sidestepped, as has happened in many of these mass mu rd e rs . T he p oi nt remains, where do we go from here? On to the midterm elections and Russian intervention, but most of all, what's being done about it. Even though our intelligence experts are warning about
