Little Bakers In Training Girl Scout Troop #8653 took a recent visit to Panera Bread, to attend their Bakers in Training program. The girls were educated on kitchen safety, food preparation, clean eating, and received a restaurant tour from Sarah Kluck, Panera’s
General Manager. Sarah also assisted them with making French Baguettes, and watched as the dough changed to toast. The girls even iced cookies and shared a light lunch with one another while attending the program.

How on earth did Democrat Conor Lamb take the congressional seat over his Republican counterpart, Rick Saccone, in Pennsylvania's 18th District special election, especially since President Donald Trump won by 20% in the same district? I felt that Democrat Lamb was a stronger c andid ate a l l a long . However, I really thought the Trump tariff might help Saccone. Looking back, it was a no brainer. What happened? The reality is Lamb was a stronger candidate. But the most important fact was that Lamb was not a far left
candidate. The truth is, he was more like a conservative republican with traits of a conservative democrat. Looking at the real reasons Lamb took it even though Rick Saccone was a slight favorite by a 49% — 46% lead — which is within the margin of error — Conor lamb ran on the following points: 1. He would never support Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. 2. He's pro life. 3. He said I want to work with President Donald Trump. 4. He's pro Second Amendment.
5 . He's pro veteran and pro military. So in other words, he made it clear he's pro American. And being a veteran and showing a strong performance on the campaign trail, the results really didn't come as a surprise. Next up, according to the Fox News rundown: The House Intelligence Committee is allegedly shutting down its investigation into the Russian interference. But some House Democrats say there is "still significant evidence" of collusion and the investigation
should remain open. Imagine that! What else are they going to say! I call it the Washington Russian fever flu. In closing on the subject, as hard as they've tried, there is no evidence of collusion in the Russian investigation. There is no evidence that the Russian meddling did affect the 2016 election in any way. And at last check, according to the New York Times, earlier the Trump administration announced it would impose new sanctions on Russia for meddling in the 2016 elections. That, by the way, started under the Obama administration. Enough said. As per Robert Mueller, the reality is Robert Mueller crossed Donald Trump's red line on Russia as he conducted his "witch hunt." In my opinion, it's time to get on with making America first. And last but not least, last Friday it was reported that there was enough evidence to investigate claims of fraud against Speaker of the House Mike Madigan. I suspect as they dig it's going to get a lot deeper. But because Madigan is Speaker of the House and Democratic Party of Illinois Chairman, a special council investigation may be warranted. I'd say this one is long overdue! To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Spring Salads With spring just a week away, it's time for a fresh approach to salads, or least in our household it is. There are lots of options available. And what's easier than making a refreshing salad — a one dish meal — served with fresh french garlic bread. Some of my favorite salad recipes are below.
Oriental Chicken Salad 1 T. vegetable oil 2/3 cup fresh bean sprouts 1 sweet red pepper, cut into 1" strips 4 green onions, cut into 1" pieces 1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen snow pea pods, thawed and drained 2 cups torn fresh spinach 2 (5 oz.) cans chow mein noodles
Combine first 8 ingredients in a jar; cover tightly, and shake vigorously. Pour half of mixture into shallow dish. Set aside remaining mixture. Cut chicken into bite-size pieces, using kitchen shears, and place in marinade in dish, tossing gently. Cover and chill 1 hour. Drain chicken, discarding marinade. Heat 1 T. oil in large skillet; saute chicken until done. Drain. Combine chicken, bean sprouts, red pepper strips, green onions, snow peas, and reserved marinade mixture. Cover and chill 2 hours. Toss spinach with chicken mixture just before serving. Serve over chow mein noodles. Yield: 6 servings.
Tuna-Pasta Salad 6 oz. spinach or tri-colored corkscrew noodles 1/2 cup sliced green onions 1/2 cup sweet yellow or green pepper strips 1/2 cup sliced ripe olives 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes 1 carrot, scraped and shredded 2 (6½ oz.) cans chunk light tuna, drained and flaked
1/2 cup vegetable oil 3 T. white wine vinegar 2 T. lemon juice 3 T. minced fresh parsley 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper 1 green onion, cut into 1" pieces 1 large clove garlic, halved Lettuce leaves
Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. Rinse with cold water; drain. Combine pasta, sliced green onions, pepper strips, ripe olives, cherry tomatoes, carrot, and tuna. Set aside. Combine oil and remaining ingredients except lettuce leaves in electric blender, and process until mixture is smooth. Pour dressing over salad, and toss gently. Cover and chill at least 8 hours, stirring occasionally. Spoon salad over lettuce leaves, using slotted spoon. Yield: 6 to 8 servings. *** Until next week, Au Revoir! —Elizabeth Fenton

Citizen Review Panels (CRP) are comprised of community volunteers who evaluate the performance of United Way community partners in serving the needs of our community. The CRP then makes recommendations for funding allocations to United Way's Board of Directors. They also ensure that the community partners deliver quality programs efficiently and effectively. As stewards of the community’s trust and contributions United Way volunteers carefully assess each agency and the programs using Quality Standards and their collective knowledge to determine whether an agency meets the criteria to be considered for funding. Community resources are extremely limited: as a result, grant awards will be very competitive. It is necessary that funds be directed first towards programs that are specific to the community goals listed below: Education • Helping children and

The Seven Last Words of Christ The last words of a dying man carry a lot of weight. For centuries the followers of Christ have remembered, studied, and found solace and hope in the seven last words of Christ uttered from the cross. The number seven is God’s number of completeness and perfection. The Jews called for Christ’s crucifixion and Pilot, even though declaring him innocent, ordered his crucifixion. David had prophesied the manner of Christ’s death. (Psalm 22) Isaiah revealed the theological purpose of Christ’s crucifixion. (Isaiah 53) Paul reminded us that when Jesus hung on the cross, he bore the curse and judgement of sin on our behalf. (Galatians 3:13) The seven last words or sayings of Jesus reveal his heart for mankind and his desire to be with his Heavenly Father. Whenever you feel discouraged, overwhelmed, or defeated, remember the incredible price Jesus paid
for you and be encouraged by his seven last words from the cross. Max Lucado wrote in his book “Six Hours One Friday”, “When times get hard, remember Jesus. When people don’t listen, remember Jesus. When tears come, remember Jesus. When disappointment is your bed partner, remember Jesus. When fear pitches his tent in your front yard. When death looms, when anger singes, when shame weighs heavily, remember Jesus.” (II Timothy 2:8) “FORGIVE THEM.” “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:23-34) Jesus was beaten, tormented, and crucified — the Romans brutal method of execution. Our human reaction is to get even. The Son of God could have called 10,000 angels to rescue him. But out of love he chose to suffer an excruciating death on our behalf. He first called on his Heavenly Father. He had been with the Father before time began. In our
time of despair and suffering we should cry out to our Father in heaven. Jesus forgave those who nailed him to the cross. Who nailed Jesus to the cross? Not just the Jews and the Romans, but your sins and mine! “Forgive them for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34) By faith and repentance, receive Christ’s forgiveness. As the old hymn says, “Jesus paid it all.” “YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE.” Jesus hung on the cross, between two thieves. One cursed and ridiculed Jesus. The other called out to Jesus. “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 23:39-42) Jesus gave the repentant thief this assurance. “Truly, I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43) That man died and was ushered instantly into heaven to be with Jesus. Faith promises a future. Stephen Hawking, one of the most brilliant men who ever lived recently died. He claimed to be an atheist who didn’t believe in God. Without Christ there is no hope. John Newton put hope to words when he penned, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found . . . When we’ve been there ten thousand
years, bright shining as the sun. We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise, than when we first begun.” Jesus promised and provided heaven for those who believe. His sacrifice on the cross purchased our pardon and promised our future. “H E R E I S YOU R MOTHER.” In these words, we see Jesus’ compassion and love on display. With His dying words Jesus commits his mother Mary into the safe keeping of the beloved disciple John. (John 19:2627) Simeon, in the temple with baby Jesus, prophesied of Mary’s anguish. (Luke 2:34-35) Even in his dying moments, Jesus did not forget those he loved. He has not forgotten you. Paul reminds us, “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David.” (II Timothy 2:8) Paul wrote this while in chains, suffering in a prison for Christ. “If we died with him, we will also live with him; If we endure we will also reign with him.” (II Timothy 2:10-12) Like the thief on the cross, confess Christ as your Savior and Lord. He will change your life forever. (Continued next week.)

Must-Have Kitchen Remodel Features Homeowners looking to renovate often see room for improvement in their kitchens and bathrooms. The National Association o f H o m e B u i l d e r ’s Remodeling Market Index Survey, which measures conditions in the remodeling market, indicates that, in 2015, the two most common remodeling jobs were bathroom remodels (81 percent) and kitchen remodels (79 percent). According to HGTV and Statistics Brain, a new kitchen remodel for a kitchen measuring 12 by 12 feet may cost homeowners anywhere from $17,000 to $37,000. Before investing so much into their remodeling projects, homeowners should think carefully about the features that will improve
Suggestions When Shopping For Fencing Fences can improve functionality of a yard and provide extra security and privacy. Some fences are decorative while others are functional. Families with children and/or companion animals also may find fencing is a necessity to keep everyone safe and corralled. With a vast array of fencing materials available, homeowners may find it challenging to decide which material is right for their properties. The following breakdown can help
homeowners learn more about fencing and potentially point them in the right direction regarding which material to choose for their properties. Budget Budget is one of the first considerations many homeowners have when installing fencing. Pricing will affect whether one can afford a chain link fence (one of the most budgetfriendly options), wrought iron or ornate wood (more expensive). Pricing out
several different types of fences will give homeowners an idea of which material fits into their budgets. Purpose Homeowners install fencing for various reasons. If a fence is an ornamental way to delineate property lines, a picket fence or a post-and-rail fence are simple options that can lend a homey feel to a property. These types of fences also can enhance and frame landscaping elements, such as gardens.

Restrictions It is important to understand local regulations before installing fencing. Communities governed by homeowners’ associations may have rules in place that dictate the type of fences that can be installed. Prepare HVAC Systems For Warmer Days Ahead

Spring is an ideal time to have inspected and repaired, if necessary. The arrival of a new season can be an exciting time. Homeowners may have renewed vigor to start home renovation projects or even tackle some cleaning and organization tasks. Before the weather starts to warm up too much, homeowners may want to evaluate their home cooling needs and ensure that all equipment is in good working order. Spring air conditioning inspections and tuneups are essential steps in system performance. Homeowners should not take for granted that a system that performed optimally last year will do so this year when t e mp e r atu re s c l i mb. Various factors, including weather damage, dust and grime, mechanical wear and tear, and even rodent or insect infestations, can c o m p r o m i s e H VA C systems. Since HVAC systems have so many moving parts, a thorough inspection of such systems can save headaches and money down the road. According to Heating Ontario, the extreme
HVAC systems
weather conditions that come along with fall and winter can be especially taxing on homes and the systems that keep them comfortable. During a spring visit, an HVAC technician will perform maintenance on the air conditioner and make sure it is ready for the heat of summertime. This maintenance may include cleaning the unit, checking controls, calibrating the thermostat, lubricating moving parts, checking refrigerant levels, tightening electrical connections, and clearing any clogs. Homeowners are urged to also change the filter at the start of the cooling season. Correcting any issues in the HVAC system well in advance of the arrival of warm weather can help ensure comfort when air conditioning is needed. As an added advantage, homeowners should install programmable thermostats if they do not already have them to keep cooling as cost- and energy-efficient as possible.

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) is pleased to announce that Lexi Scrivner from Bluford has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Inspired by her desire to become a cardiothoracic surgeon, Lexi planned and hosted “Bless Your Heart” — a free heart health event for her community to earn this prestigious award. “I find it important to educate about the heart in a fun and exciting way,” she explained. “Knowing that one in four deaths is a result of heart disease makes this all the more critical. Small change can make an enor-
mous impact.” To raise awareness about heart health, Lexi planned and hosted a heart health event at Veterans Park in Mt. Vernon that included fun activities such as a dancercise sessions, games, heart healthy food tasting, recipe sharing and children’s learning sessions, as well as free medical screenings such as BMI Index, blood glucose, and blood pressure. She also held a blood drive on site to help the American Red Cross. Area health care professionals were on hand to teach participants about good nutrition, exercise, and other healthy habits. courage participants to continue to exercise, she choreographed several dancercise videos which she published on YouTube and Facebook. She also created and donated an art piece for a local hospital to commemorate the event and everyone who participated. Lexi was pleased with the impact her project made on the community, sharing that “Over twenty pints of blood were collected from my event. Since every pint can save three lives, my event immediately saved more than sixty lives. My project could also potentially save the lives of community members because they now know how to diminish the risk of contracting heart disease.” She also felt she experienced personal growth from completing her Girl Scout Gold Award project, stating “being able to host such an all-encompassing event that had so many puzzle pieces to it that had to align just right has taught me what it means
to be in charge and how to handle situations that arise. Lexi is the daughter of Sheila and the late Larry Scrivner. She is a senior at Webber Township High School and plans to attend medical school at St. Louis University or University of Missouri-Kansas City to pursue her dream of being a cardiothoracic surgeon. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn, recognizes a Girl Scout's commitment to excellence as she develops skills and values to meet present and future challenges in her life. To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, a Girl Scout S enior or Girl S cout Ambassador must design and carry out a project that fulfills a need within a girl’s community, creates change, and is sustainable. The project must be completed with a suggested minimum of 80 hours of work. Only about five percent of eligible girls earn the prestigious Gold Award.
