candidate. The truth is, he was more like a conservative republican with traits of a conservative democrat. Looking at the real reasons Lamb took it even though Rick Saccone was a slight favorite by a 49% — 46% lead — which is within the margin of error — Conor lamb ran on the following points: 1. He would never support Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. 2. He's pro life. 3. He said I want to work with President Donald Trump. 4. He's pro Second Amendment.

How on earth did Democrat Conor Lamb take the congressional seat over his Republican counterpart, Rick Saccone, in Pennsylvania's 18th District special election, especially since President Donald Trump won by 20% in the same district? I felt that Democrat Lamb was a stronger c andid ate a l l a long . However, I really thought the Trump tariff might help Saccone. Looking back, it was a no brainer. What happened? The reality is Lamb was a stronger candidate. But the most important fact was that Lamb was not a far left

should remain open. Imagine that! What else are they going to say! I call it the Washington Russian fever flu. In closing on the subject, as hard as they've tried, there is no evidence of collusion in the Russian investigation. There is no evidence that the Russian meddling did affect the 2016 election in any way. And at last check, according to the New York Times, earlier the Trump administration announced it would impose new sanctions on Russia for meddling in the 2016 elections. That, by the way, started under the Obama administration. Enough said. As per Robert Mueller, the reality is Robert Mueller crossed Donald Trump's red line on Russia as he conducted his "witch hunt." In my opinion, it's time to get on with making America first. And last but not least, last Friday it was reported that there was enough evidence to investigate claims of fraud against Speaker of the House Mike Madigan. I suspect as they dig it's going to get a lot deeper. But because Madigan is Speaker of the House and Democratic Party of Illinois Chairman, a special council investigation may be warranted. I'd say this one is long overdue!

Spring Salads With spring just a week away, it's time for a fresh approach to salads, or least in our household it is. There are lots of options available. And what's easier than making a refreshing salad — a one dish meal — served with fresh french garlic bread. Some of my favorite salad recipes are below.

Oriental Chicken Salad 2/3 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup lemon juice 3 T. rice salad vinegar 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 tsp. ground ginger 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper 1½ lbs. skinned, boned chicken breasts 1 T. vegetable oil 2/3 cup fresh bean sprouts 1 sweet red pepper, cut into 1" strips 4 green onions, cut into 1" pieces 1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen snow pea pods, thawed and drained

MT. VERNON • MURPHYSBORO • WEST FRANKFORT • CENTRALIA

NOW ACCEPTING PATIENTS! cups torn fresh spinach 2 (5 oz.) cans chow mein noodles

Combine first 8 ingredients in a jar; cover tightly, and shake vigorously. Pour half of mixture into shallow dish. Set aside remaining mixture. Cut chicken into bite-size pieces, using kitchen shears, and place in marinade in dish, tossing gently. Cover and chill 1 hour. Drain chicken, discarding marinade. Heat 1 T. oil in large skillet; saute chicken until done. Drain. Combine chicken, bean sprouts, red pepper strips, green onions, snow peas, and reserved marinade mixture. Cover and chill 2 hours. Toss spinach with chicken mixture just before serving. Serve over chow mein noodles. Yield: 6 servings.

Tuna-Pasta Salad 6 oz. spinach or tri-colored corkscrew noodles 1/2 cup sliced green onions 1/2 cup sweet yellow or green pepper strips 1/2 cup sliced ripe olives 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes 1 carrot, scraped and shredded 2 (6½ oz.) cans chunk light tuna, drained and flaked

1/2 cup vegetable oil 3 T. white wine vinegar 2 T. lemon juice 3 T. minced fresh parsley 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper 1 green onion, cut into 1" pieces 1 large clove garlic, halved Lettuce leaves

Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. Rinse with cold water; drain. Combine pasta, sliced green onions, pepper strips, ripe olives, cherry tomatoes, carrot, and tuna. Set aside. Combine oil and remaining ingredients except lettuce leaves in electric blender, and process until mixture is smooth. Pour dressing over salad, and toss gently. Cover and chill at least 8 hours, stirring occasionally. Spoon salad over lettuce leaves, using slotted spoon. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

Beans-And-Rice Salad 1 (15 oz.) can black beans, drained 1/4 cup commercial Italian salad dressing 1/4 tsp. pepper 3/4 cup long-grain rice, uncooked 1/4 cup commercial Italian salad dressing

Lettuce leaves 3/4 cup (3 oz.) shredded Cheddar cheese 3 green onions, thinly sliced 1 medium tomato, chopped Sour cream (optional)

Combine first 3 ingredients; cover and chill at least 8 hours. Cook rice according to package directions, omitting salt, if desired. Rinse with cold water; drain. Combine rice and 1/4 cup salad dressing, stirring well. Chill at least 8 hours. Spoon rice onto individual lettuce-lined plates. Spoon bean mixture over rice. Top with cheese, green onions, tomato, and, if desired, sour cream. Yield: 4 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. Enjoy a well-earned weekend of fun with a special someone. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Aspects favor re-establishing business relationships you might have neglected. A family member’s request needs to be given more thought before you make a decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) While you might appreciate the avalanche of advice coming from others, keep in mind that the intuitive Moon Child is best served by listening to her or his own inner voice. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s social life whirls at centrifugal speed this week as you go from function to function. Things slow by week’s end, giving you a chance to catch up on your chores. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Don’t let your stand on an issue cause a rift with a colleague. Insist on both of you taking time to reassess your positions while there’s still room for compromise. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An opportunity you’d been hoping for finally opens up. But read the

fine print before you make a commitment, especially where a time factor might be involved. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your need to know what’s going on behind the scenes leads you to make some bold moves. Be prepared with a full explanation of your actions if necessary. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A lot of details need tending to during the early part of the week. The pressure eases midweek, allowing you to get back to your major undertaking. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A friend asks you to act on their behalf in a dispute. Be careful. You might not have all the facts you need in order to make a fair assessment of the situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new development might require you to cancel some of your plans. But you adapt easily, and by week’s end, you could receive welcome “cheeringup” news. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your recent workplace accomplishments boost your self-confidence just as you’re about to consider a potentially rewarding, although possibly risky, career move. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of the arts is equaled only by your strong sense of justice. People can depend on you to always try to do what’s right. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Need A Fence Or Deck, Give Us A Call!

• Wood • Vinyl • Chain Link

We Install and Will Take Down!

A post-and-rail fence can be sufficient if the goal is to mark off property lines but not obscure views. Fences can improve functionality of a yard and provide extra security and privacy. Some fences are decorative while others are functional. Families with children and/or companion animals also may find fencing is a necessity to keep everyone safe and corralled. With a vast array of fencing materials available, homeowners may find it challenging to decide which material is right for their properties. The following breakdown can help homeowners learn more about fencing and potentially point them in the right direction regarding which material to choose for their properties. Budget Budget is one of the first considerations many homeowners have when installing fencing. Pricing will affect whether one can afford a chain link fence (one of the most budgetfriendly options), wrought

iron or ornate wood (more expensive). Pricing out several different types of fences will give homeowners an idea of which material fits into their budgets. Purpose Homeowners install fencing for various reasons. If a fence is an ornamental way to delineate property lines, a picket fence or a post-and-rail fence are simple options that can lend a homey feel to a property. These types of fences also can enhance and frame landscaping elements, such as gardens. In many area, laws require homeowners to install fencing around swimming pools. In such instances, chain link fencing that does not obstruct views of the pool might be the best choice. If security or privacy is the main desire, tall fences that make it difficult for neighbors to see into the yard may make an ideal choice.

Restrictions It is important to understand local regulations before installing fencing. Communities governed by homeowners’ associations may have rules in place that dictate the type of fences that can be installed. Townships and other municipalities may have their own rules concerning fence type, property borders, fence height, and other factors that will have to be adhered to so that fencing will meet code. If such rules are not following fines may be imposed and the fence may have to be removed. Homeowners also may need permits to install fencing, whether they are hiring a contractor or doing the work themselves. Maintenance Consumer resource Angie’s List advises homeowners to consider maintenance before choosing a fencing material. Wooden fencing requires the most maintenance due to painting and staining. Aluminum or vinyl fencing requires less maintenance, but it can be harder to repair isolated damage or replace pickets, if necessary. In some instances, the entire fence may have to be replaced. Homeowners install fencing for many different reasons. Considering price, budget, purpose, and maintenance before making a decision regarding fencing can help homeowners make the best decision possible.

Homeowners looking to renovate often see room for improvement in their kitchens and bathrooms. The National Association of Home Builder’s Remodeling Market Index Survey, which measures conditions in the remodeling market, indicates that, in 2015, the two most common remodeling jobs were bathroom remodels (81 percent) and kitchen remodels (79 percent). According to HGTV and Statistics Brain, a new kitchen remodel for a kitchen measuring 12 by 12 feet may cost homeowners anywhere from $17,000 to $37,000. Before investing so much into their remodeling projects, homeowners

should think carefully about the features that will improve their time spent at home. When planning a kitchen renovation, homeowners may want to consider the following upgrades to make the room more enjoyable while improving its functionality.

debris may used as inerts that become road base, while clear wood may be transformed into mulch or biomass fuel. Crushed concrete can go on to live a second life as gravel or become dry aggregate for new concrete. Prepare HVAC Systems For Warmer Days Ahead The arrival of a new season can be an exciting time. Homeowners may have renewed vigor to start home renovation projects or even tackle some cleaning and organization tasks.

Before the weather starts to warm up too much, homeowners may want to evaluate their home cooling needs and ensure that all equipment is in good working order.

Spring air conditioning inspections and tuneups are essential steps in system performance. Homeowners should not take for granted that a system that performed optimally last year

will do so this year when te mp e r atu re s cl i mb. Various factors, including weather damage, dust and grime, mechanical wear and tear, and even rodent or insect infestations, can c o m p r o m i s e H VA C systems. Since HVAC systems have so many moving parts, a thorough inspection of such systems can save headaches and money down the road. According to Heating Ontario, the extreme weather conditions that come along with fall and winter can be especially taxing on homes and the systems that keep them comfortable. During a spring visit, an HVAC technician will perform maintenance on the air conditioner and make sure it is ready for the heat of summertime. This maintenance may include cleaning the unit, checking controls,

The Seven Last Words of Christ

Your Loved One Never Leaves Our Care

The last words of a dying man carry a lot of weight. For centuries the followers of Christ have remembered, studied, and found solace and hope in the seven last words of Christ uttered from the cross. The number seven is God’s number of completeness and perfection. The Jews called for Christ’s crucifixion and Pilot, even though declaring him innocent, ordered his crucifixion. David had prophesied the manner of Christ’s death. (Psalm 22) Isaiah revealed the theological purpose of Christ’s crucifixion. (Isaiah 53) Paul reminded us that when Jesus hung on the cross, he bore the curse and judgement of sin on our behalf. (Galatians 3:13) The seven last words or sayings of Jesus reveal his heart for mankind and his desire to be with his Heavenly Father. Whenever you feel discouraged, overwhelmed, or defeated, remember the

incredible price Jesus paid for you and be encouraged by his seven last words from the cross. Max Lucado wrote in his book “Six Hours One Friday”, “When times get hard, remember Jesus. When people don’t listen, remember Jesus. When tears come, remember Jesus. When disappointment is your bed partner, remember Jesus. When fear pitches his tent in your front yard. When death looms, when anger singes, when shame weighs heavily, remember Jesus.” (II Timothy 2:8) “FORGIVE THEM.” “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:23-34) Jesus was beaten, tormented, and crucified — the Romans brutal method of execution. Our human reaction is to get even. The Son of God could have called 10,000 angels to rescue him. But out of love he chose to suffer an excruciating death on our behalf. He first called on his Heavenly Father. He had been with the Father before

time began. In our time of despair and suffering we should cry out to our Father in heaven. Jesus forgave those who nailed him to the cross. Who nailed Jesus to the cross? Not just the Jews and the Romans, but your sins and mine! “Forgive them for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34) By faith and repentance, receive Christ’s forgiveness. As the old hymn says, “Jesus paid it all.” “YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE.” Jesus hung on the cross, between two thieves. One cursed and ridiculed Jesus. The other called out to Jesus. “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 23:39-42) Jesus gave the repentant thief this assurance. “Truly, I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43) That man died and was ushered instantly into heaven to be with Jesus. Faith promises a future. Stephen Hawking, one of the most brilliant men who ever lived recently died. He claimed to be an atheist who didn’t believe in God. Without Christ there is no hope. John Newton put hope to words when he penned, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found . . . When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun.

We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise, than when we first begun.” Jesus promised and provided heaven for those who believe. His sacrifice on the cross purchased our pardon and promised our future. “ H E R E I S YO U R MOTHER.” In these words, we see Jesus’ compassion and love on display. With His dying words Jesus commits his mother Mary into the safe keeping of the beloved disciple John. (John 19:26-27) Simeon, in the temple with baby Jesus, prophesied of Mary’s anguish. (Luke 2:34-35) Even in his dying moments, Jesus did not forget those he loved. He has not forgotten you. Paul reminds us, “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David.” (II Timothy 2:8) Paul wrote this while in chains, suffering in a prison for Christ. “If we died with him, we will also live with him; If we endure we will also reign with him.” (II Timothy 2:10-12) Like the thief on the cross, confess Christ as your Savior and Lord. He will change your life forever.
