EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
The Seven Last Words of Christ (Part II) The last words of a dying man carry a lot of weight. The seven last words of Christ from the cross are revealing and transforming. They reveal that he is the Son of God, our Savior, the sacrifice for sin, our High Priest, and the victory over spiritual and physical death. Believe and receive these seven sayings of Christ and be changed forever. Last week we examined the first three revealing sayings of Christ. Let us continue to delve into Christ’s utterances from the cross. “WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? ” (Matthew 27:46) Have you ever felt forsaken and totally alone? Jesus carried our griefs and sorrows. “Surely, he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrow; yet
we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.” (Isaiah 53:4) No one understands like Jesus. Jesus, the night before his crucifixion, foretold that his disciples would desert him. But why would God the Father forsake him? “For he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin: that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (II Corinthians 5:21) When Jesus, who was totally innocent and holy, became sin for us, he was separated from the Father for a brief time. God cannot look upon sin. Isaiah paints the picture of Christ as the sin offering that satisfied the justice of God. (Isaiah 53:10-11) Jesus is touched by our lost and lonely cries. He has been there. Seeing his grief, how can we entertain sin in our life again? “I THIRST.” (John 19:28) As a result of his scourging, crucifixion,
and loss of blood, Jesus was drained, dehydrated, and dry. David prophesied of this, “My strength is dried up like a potsherd and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; and you have set me toward the dust of death.” (Psalm 22:15) Jesus had earlier refused a medicinal drink of vinegar and gall. Suffering, Christ partook of the bitterness of sin for the world and ushered in God’s grace and mercy. We have a foreshadowing of this when Israel came to the waters of Marah, which means bitter, in the desert. They couldn’t drink it. God instructed Moses to cut down a tree and throw it in and the waters became sweet. (Exodus 15:23-25) Jesus’ cross-turns the bitterness of sin into sweetness. “Amazing grace how sweet the sound.” “IT IS FINISHED.” “So, when Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished!’” (John 19:30) Jesus finished what he came to earth to do. He gave himself as a sin offering for mankind. John the Baptist proclaimed him, “The lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Eve’s Seed whose heel
would be bruised but who would crush the serpent’s head. (Genesis 3:15) The devil is finished; His power is broken over you. Jesus paid the debt in full. (Revelation 12:11) “I COMMIT MY SPIRIT.” “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46) Jesus showed us how to die. No one could take his life. He surrendered it to the Father. The first and last sayings of Jesus reveal him as our High Priest. When Jesus gave up his spirit to the Father and breathed his last, it was finished and the veil in the temple separating the Holy of Holies was torn from top to bottom. This shows open access into the presence of God through the blood of our High Priest — Jesus Christ. (Hebrews 10:1922) Experience the life changing power of the cross by receiving Christ as your Savior and Lord. “But as many as received him, to them he gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believes on his name.” (John 1:12) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Blood Donors Urged To Help Restock Red Cross Shelves After Severe Winter Storms Though spring has officially arrived, the American Red Cross blood supply is still recovering from severe winter storms in March. Donors of all blood types are urged to roll up a sleeve and help save lives. Winter weather in parts of the country forced more than 270 blood drives to cancel, resulting in over 9,500 uncollected blood and platelet donations in the first two weeks of March. No matter the weather, the need for blood to help cancer patients, those undergoing surgeries, trauma patients and others remains. Volunteer blood donors from across the country are needed to help ensure lifesaving blood products are available for patients this spring. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Upcoming blood donation opportunities a listed below.

For years on Easter the tradition at the Fenton household has been ham or leg of lamb with all the fixin’s and of course, weather permitting, an Easter egg hunt for the little ones. And the day always started with the entire family going to church. This year, with the family spread out, other than attending church I decided to change things up and experiment with a new menu, starting with Chicken Breasts in Phyllo Pastry, Marinated Asparagus Medley, New Potatoes With Basil Cream Sauce, and finishing up with Sherbet-Cantaloupe Surprise.

The Easter Story The Death of Jesus (44) It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, (45) for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. (46) Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When He had said this, He breathed his last. (47) The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” (48) When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. (49) But all those who knew Him, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. Luke 23: 44 – 49
~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ The Burial of Jesus
(50) Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, (51) who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. (52) Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. (53) Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. (54) It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. (55) The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how His body was laid in it. (56) Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. Luke 23: 50 – 56
(62) The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. (63) “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ (64) So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that He has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.” (65) “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” (66) So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard. Matthew 27: 62 – 66
~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ Jesus Has Risen
(1) After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. (2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. (3)His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. (4)The guards were so afraid of Him that they shook and became like dead men. (5) The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. (6) He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. (7) Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ Now I have told you.” (8) So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell His disciples. (9) Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” He said. They came to him, clasped His feet and worshiped Him. (10) Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” Matthew 28: 1 – 10

ROLLIE EXCAVATING & CEMENT FINISHING Luke 618-237-0552
HOLY THURSDAY COMMEMORATES THE LAST SUPPER Holy Thursday, which falls on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, commemorates The Last Supper of Jesus Christ. During The Last Supper, Jesus, who Christians believe is the Son of God, established the s a c r a m e n t o f Ho l y Communion. The Last
Supper was the final meal Jesus enjoyed with his disciples in Jerusalem, and it was during The Last Supper when Jesus predicted one of those disciples would ultimately betray him. Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Maundy Thursday,” a reference to
the religious rite of maundy, which is the washing of the feet. The Last Supper and the rite of maundy are connected because it was during The Last Supper that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Though The Last Supper, during which Jesus gave his disciples
bread, telling them it was his body, and wine, telling them it was his blood, is celebrated at every Mass as part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Holy Thursday Mass places even greater emphasis on this significant event.
THE MEANING OF GOOD FRIDAY G o o d Fr id ay is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire. In fact, in the fou r t h c e ntu r y, t h e Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as
a day of mourning and prayer. In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal. Christians believe that commemorating the death of Christ helps to remind them of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death. The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday
correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including non-Christians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congrega-

Editor’s Note: Chris Bean of Bean Insurance and the Chairman of the Jefferson County Republican Party was gracious enough to agree to be the guest writer for Politically Speaking, giving an overview of the primary in his county. Primary Election Results For Jefferson County, IL 2018 D e s p i t e Je f f e r s o n County having several contested races on both ballots, voter turnout was low. There was a Twenty-
four percent turnout with 5,672 ballots cast in the county. Democrat voted 2,383, Republican voted 3,284 and Green Party voted 5. On the Democrat ballot Pritzker won the six way campaign for Governor after putting $70,000,000 of his own money in his campaign. In the Attorney General race Pat Quinn won big in Jefferson County despite losing overall. Brandon Kelly won big over David Bequette for the US House 12th District race. The Il-

linois House 115th District saw Marsha Griffin face off against new comer Tamiko Mueller. Griffin won the contest and will be making a second attempt to win this seat. The County Treasurer race had current Sheriff Travis Allen defeating first time candidate Zackary Bean. The Republican party was full of fireworks on the state level but pretty quiet on the county races. Governor Rauner won Jefferson County by 111 votes. The Ives/Rauner race was a brutal battle. The big question now is can the party come back together or will they hand the Governor’s office back to the Democrats. Erica Harold defeated Gary Grasso to win the nomination for Attorney General despite a late push by Grasso. Jefferson County native Preston Nelson challenged sitting US Congressman Mike Bost. Bost won big but it was great seeing a young new face getting involved. For Illinois 115th

House seat we watched a bloody battle between Paul Jacobs and incumbent Terri Bryant. Several groups got involved in this race resulting in getting as many as seven mailers a day. Special interest groups ran numurous an attack adds against each candidate. These did not normally come directly from either candidate and often were not approved by any candidate. Bryant was victorious in the slug fest. The only contested county wide race was for Sheriff. Both candidates ran a very clean and upstanding campaigns. Jeff Bullard defeated Curt Anselment in the race. One county board seat was challenged. Jere Shaw defeated Jeff Stewart by 35 votes. Expect a few months quit then every other commercial on TV will be either Pritzker or Rauner. The total amount spent on this race could top a half of a Billion dollars. I think the primary was just a taste of what’s to come! To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. At the Mount Vernon, Marc h 1 9 C ou n c i l meeting, the City has plans to give away another $300,000+ dollars of our collected sales tax revenue to yet another developer. This time it’s on 42nd Street for a right turning lane that should be paid for by the contractor, and not we the tax taxpayers. If this company wants to locate on a spot where the road cannot handle the expected traffic increase they should acrue the cost, not us. However, once again we are giving away our sales tax revenue from a City that claims our revenue numbers are d ow n . Now e it h e r someone is lying to us, or they have a lot more coming in than the City needs. I say this must be the case or they wouldn’t be giving it away at every turn. People, we need to wise up, and the next time they want a sales tax or any tax increase, tell them no; and if they raise it anyway, we must get rid of this Home-Rule Authority that they wield over us. On to the water meters nonsense. The city is set to move forward with the idea of replacing our water meters before they replace our fai ling

100+year old water mains. I was hoping that our new mayor and councilmen would be better then the last board, and be more concerned about the looming loss of our water system, but they are proving me wrong. As I drive by the new Industrial Park we don’t need, I see the city pouring a lot of money into that project while our water mains are popping all over town. They say we have a big water loss, and they think it’s coming from old water meters, but no one has verified that. They’re just taking the word of water meter manufacturing companies wanting to sell us meters, so sure let’s spend $3,000,000+ on meters instead of first replacing the water mains that we know are failing. City, that plan is ridiculous! Steven B. Casper Sr. Mt. Vernon _________________ Send your letters to the editor to: Shopper’s Weekly-Speak Out, P.O.
