It’s Time To Get Your Toes Done!

Frankly, I’m glad the primary election is over! This one had an outcome I really didn’t predict in a couple of the races, especially on one, the state representative (maybe wishful thinking on my part.) However, the main race was for the Governor. Democrat J.B. Pritzker took Marion County and Bruce Rauner saw a close outcome with Jeanne Ives, virtually an unknown six months ago. If that doesn’t tell Rauner something, nothing will. In the general election in the fall it’s not going to be a walk in the park. I’ve personally heard a number of folks say they voted for Rauner instead of Ives not because they like what he’s done, but they didn’t want to split the vote and take a chance that in the end would help J.B. Pritzker, Michael Madigan’s guy. So in November, in my opinion, Illinois will have a choice between two question-

I am truly humbled by the opportunity given to me by Republican voters in the 54th District to stand for election in November and to be their nominee for Illinois State Senate. This campaign could not have succeeded were it not for the extraordinary work and dedication of volunteers and supporters from across the eight counties of this district. I am deeply grateful for their support,

their trust, and for their passion for the future of Southern Illinois. Looking ahead, I will continue to be a loud voice for the issues that Southern Illinois families care about and deal with every day. I spoke often during this campaign about the vital importance of attracting quality jobs, lowering taxes, supporting law enforcement in the fight against opioids, and

campaign. Myers’ loss in my opinion, was our loss, and I’m in great hopes she makes another run for it in two years. So the Governor’s race is set and November is really closer than we realize. As Republican incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner declared victory last Tuesday night after winning over his challenger Jeanne Ives by a slim margin, he said, “To those of you around the state of Illinois who wanted to send me a message, let me be clear. I have heard you.” As for J.B. Pritzker — Speaker of the House Michael Madigan’s guy — after the final count Tuesday evening he told the crowd gathered at a Chicago hotel, “I’ll work for graduated income tax, legalized recreational marijuana and better health care options.” He also said as governor he wouldn’t let President Donald Trump “have an inch of Illinois.” So much for working with the federal gov-

able candidates, the billionaire fighting a millionaire. Wow! We have come to a crossroads in this state, and I’m in great hopes that we can learn from the mistakes of the past, turn the corner, and make Illinois a great state to live in, work in, but especially raise a family in once again. In the Senate race in the 54th District Jason Plummer and Ben Stratemeyer both had 1,346 votes in Marion County. However, Mr. Plummer took a double lead in Washington County and a huge lead in Fayette and Clinton counties, making Jason Plummer the biggest vote getter by far. In the 107th House of Representatives race Blaine Wilhour ran a tight lead in Marion County over my pick, Laura Myers. Mrs. Myers took B ond County and Mr. Wilhour took Effingham County. But sit up and take note: I’m hoping we all haven’t heard the last of Laura Myers, who ran an honest grass roots

ernment. Someone needs to tell J.B. the two biggest problems we have in Illinois are spending, and, in my opinion, Speaker of the House Michael Madigan, not Donald Trump. Moving on, you may not know because the liberal major media didn’t offer much coverage on another recent school shooting that happened last week in a Maryland high school. But this time the outcome was somewhat different, although still tragic because two students were injured by the 17-year-old shooter before he was shot and killed by an armed school resource officer while exchanging gunfire. One student has died, and the other has been released from the hospital. Thank God the officer, in my opinion, took appropriate action, and in doing so, who knows how many lives were saved. So much for gun free zones. However, what I find interesting is the lack of media coverage. Why? Well, could it be that this school shooting was an argument in the favor of some armed teachers or other trained school officials? It doesn’t fit into the left’s agenda. Until next week.

24th Annual Reality Store

Centralia Business and Professional Women, in partnership with the Centralia Sunrise and Noon Rotar y Clubs, hosted their 24th annual Reality Store for area eighth-graders on Friday, March 23, at the Centralia Jr. High School. In 1993 Illinois Business and Professional Women asked for volunteers to help with the first “Reality Store” to be held during the state convention in the spring. Centralia BPW provided several volunteers. The program was so innovative and well received by 8th graders from an area school that Clara Rouse and Kathy Smith said “We need this in Centralia.” In 1994 Centralia Jr. High agreed and the first Centralia Reality Store was held for CJHS 8th graders. The morning activities were so well received and talked about that other area schools asked to be included. By adding other 8th graders in the area it became obvious more time at the Junior High and more volunteers would be needed. Junior High agreed to an all day Reality Store and the call went out to area organizations, churches, family and

friends. Centralia High School Nike Club and Kaskaskia College sent v o l u n t e e r s . To d a y Centralia High School,

Christ Our Rock High School and KC Athletic Department provide volunteers. From the beginning Centralia Rotary provided volunteers. After a few years Rotary offered to partner with BPW. Reality Store has grown each year for 24 years and has become a day 8th graders and workers look forward to. It could not be done by BPW alone. Centralia Junior High and all volunteers and donations are greatly appreciated.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Seven Last Words of Christ (Part II) The last words of a dying man carry a lot of weight. The seven last words of Christ from the cross are revealing and transforming. They reveal that he is the Son of God, our Savior, the sacrifice for sin, our High Priest, and the victory over spiritual and physical death. Believe and receive these seven sayings of Christ and be changed forever. Last week we examined the first three revealing sayings of Christ. Let us continue to delve into Christ’s utterances from the cross. “WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46) Have you ever felt forsaken and totally alone? Jesus carried our griefs and sorrows. “Surely, he has borne our griefs and carried our

sorrow; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.” (Isaiah 53:4) No one understands like Jesus. Jesus, the night before his crucifixion, foretold that his disciples would desert him. But why would God the Father forsake him? “For he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin: that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (II Corinthians 5:21) When Jesus, who was totally innocent and holy, became sin for us, he was separated from the Father for a brief time. God cannot look upon sin. Isaiah paints the picture of Christ as the sin offering that satisfied the justice of God. (Isaiah 53:10-11) Jesus is touched by our lost and lonely cries. He has been there. Seeing his grief, how can we entertain sin in our life again? “I THIRST.” (John 19:28) As a result of his scourging, crucifixion, and loss of

Community Trust Bank Announces New Partnership Community Trust Bank announced this week a new partnership with Gershman Mortgage. Gershman Mortgage has a 60-year history of helping Illinois as well as Missouri families finance their dream homes, and they share that longevity with family-owned Community Trust Bank that has its own long history of being a family-owned, independent financial institution. president and chairman of the board for 50 years. Today, serving as chairwoman of the board is Lester's daughter, Nancy Roethemeyer, and Lester's granddaughter Sheila Burcham is serving as President / CEO. And so the long history of a family serving the local communities continues at the start of a new partnership with Gershman Mortgage. blood, Jesus was drained, dehydrated, and dry. David prophesied of this, “My strength is dried up like a potsherd and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; and you have set me toward the dust of death.” (Psalm 22:15) Jesus had earlier refused a medicinal drink of vinegar and gall. Suffering, Christ partook of the bitterness of sin for the world and ushered in God’s grace and mercy. We have a foreshadowing of this when Israel came to the waters of Marah, which means bitter, in the desert. They couldn’t drink it. God instructed Moses to cut down a tree and throw it in and the waters became sweet. (Exodus 15:23-25) Jesus’ cross-turns the bitterness of sin into sweetness. “Amazing grace how sweet the sound.” “IT IS FINISHED.” “So, when Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished!’” (John 19:30) Jesus finished what he came to earth to do. He gave himself as a sin offering for mankind. John the Baptist proclaimed him, “The lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Eve’s Seed whose heel would be

bruised but who would crush the serpent’s head. (Genesis 3:15) The devil is finished; His power is broken over you. Jesus paid the debt in full. (Revelation 12:11) “I COMMIT MY SPIRIT.” “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46) Jesus showed us how to die. No one could take his life. He surrendered it to the Father. The first and last sayings of Jesus reveal him as our High Priest. When Jesus gave up his spirit to the Father and breathed his last, it was finished and the veil in the temple separating the Holy of Holies was torn from top to bottom. This shows open access into the presence of God through the blood of our High Priest — Jesus Christ. (Hebrews 10:19-22) Experience the life changing power of the cross by receiving Christ as your Savior and Lord. “But as many as received him, to them he gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believes on his name.” (John 1:12) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

THE DEATH OF JESUS

THE GUARD AT THE TOMB

(44) It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, (45) for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. (46) Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”When He had said this, He breathed his last. (47) The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” (48) When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. (49) But all those who knew Him, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. Luke 23: 44 – 49

(62) The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. (63) “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ (64) So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that He has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.” (65) “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” (66) So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard. Matthew 27: 62 – 66

~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
THE BURIAL OF JESUS
(50) Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, (51) who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. (52) Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. (53) Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. (54) It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. (55) The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how His body was laid in it. (56) Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. Luke 23: 50 – 56
JESUS HAS RISEN
(1) After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. (2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. (3)His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. (4)The guards were so afraid of Him that they shook and became like dead men. (5) The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. (6) He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. (7) Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ Now I have told you.” (8) So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell His disciples. (9) Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” He said. They came to him, clasped His feet and worshiped Him. (10) Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” Matthew 28: 1 – 10
SINA Meeting Informs Members of Banking Scams The SINA meeting was held at the Centralia Recreation Complex on March 22. The featured speaker was Deana Woods from Community Trust Bank. Her topic was “Banking Scams.” She began her presentation by speaking about certain general examples that she has seen over the years during her banking experience. Several examples were scams on the elderly, overseas lotteries, Craig's List, social media purchasing, getting pop ups on your PC telling you that your computer has a virus, grandparents being asked for monies from relatives overseas and skimmers on gas pumps. She handed out brochures to all members that were present, one on cyber security guide and 10 things you can do to avoid fraud. The 10 things to help you protect yourself against fraud are:
• Spot imposters. • Do online searches. • Don't believe your caller ID. • Don't pay up front for purchases. • Consider how you pay. • Talk to someone. • Hang up on robo calls. • Be skeptical about free trial offers. • Don't deposit a check and wire money back. • Sign up for free scam alerts from FTC at ftc.gov/ scams. HOLY THURSDAY COMMEMORATES THE LAST SUPPER Holy Thursday, which falls on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, commemorates The Last Supper of Jesus Christ. During The Last Supper, Jesus, who Christians believe is the Son of God, established the sacrament of Holy Communion. The Last
Supper was the final meal Jesus enjoyed with his disciples in Jerusalem, and it was during The Last Supper when Jesus predicted one of those disciples would ultimately betray him. Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Maundy Thursday,” a reference to the
religious rite of maundy, which is the washing of the feet. The Last Supper and the rite of maundy are connected because it was during The Last Supper that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Though The Last Supper, during which Jesus gave his disciples bread,
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Congratulations, Lamb. This is the week to finish your project and then bask in your well-earned approval. (And if you like, you also can say “bah” to all those detractors.) TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The bold Bovine could find a new opportunity too intriguing to be ignored. But don’t charge into it. Go slowly so you see how things develop as you get more involved. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might try to soften your stand on that important issue. A little more flexibility actually could get you what you’re looking for. A new friend enters the picture midweek. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your inner voice is on the mark when it advises you to tackle that family problem now! The sooner you’re able to come to terms with it, the better it will be for everyone. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Someone reveals important news about a longtime associate. But before you decide how to deal with this information, make sure it’s reliable, and not simply self-serving. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some intensive soul-searching early in the week can help you reach a decision by week’s end that should please both you and the other person involved. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The possibility of a career change is intriguing. Learn more about what
it can offer and what it cannot. Weigh everything carefully. And ask questions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Work is your priority this week as you try to make up for lost time. Expect help from someone who cares about you. Things take a welcome turn by the weekend. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A health problem causes some anxiety early in the week. But prompt medical attention soon eases everyone’s concerns. Enjoy an arts-filled weekend. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) As much as you might resent it, a changing situation could require you to adjust your plans accordingly. The good news: An associate agrees to cooperate. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That old problem is finally resolved, just in time for you to take on a new work-related project. This one could be the super door-opener you’ve been looking for. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The early part of the week presents some difficult hurdles. But once you get over them, you can start to focus on matters that are more important to you. Cooking With Lizzie
A New Easter Menu For years on Easter the tradition at the Fenton household has been ham or leg of lamb with all the fixin’s and of course, weather permitting, an Easter egg hunt for the little ones. And the day always started with the entire family going to church. This year, with the family spread out, other than attending church I decided to change things up and experiment with a new menu, starting with Chicken Breasts in Phyllo Pastry, Marinated Asparagus Medley, New Potatoes With Basil Cream Sauce, and finishing up with Sherbet-Cantaloupe Surprise.
Chicken Breasts In Phyllo Pastry 1 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing 2/3 cup chopped green onions 3½ T. fresh lemon juice 1 small clove garlic, minced 3/4 tsp. dried whole tarragon 8 chicken breast halves, skinned and boned
1/4 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. pepper 16 sheets commercial frozen phyllo pastry, thawed Butter-flavored vegetable cooking spray 3½ T. grated Parmesan cheese
Combine mayonnaise, green onions, lemon juice, garlic, and tarragon in a small mixing bowl. Set mayonnaise mixture aside. Sprinkle chicken breasts with salt and pepper. Place one sheet of phyllo pastry on a sheet of plastic wrap; spray evenly with cooking spray. Place another sheet of phyllo on top; spray with cooking spray. Spread about 3 T. mayonnaise mixture on both sides of 1 chicken breast; place breast diagonally in one comer of stacked pastry sheets. Fold comer over breast; fold sides over, and carefully roll up in pastry. Place seam side down in an ungreased 15"x 10" x l" jellyroll pan. Repeat procedure with remaining phyllo, cooking spray, mayonnaise mixture, and chicken breasts. Spray tops of pastry bundles with cooking spray; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes or until chicken breasts are done. Serve immediately. Yield: 8 servings. Note: Melted butter or margarine may be substituted for butter-flavored cooking spray, if you prefer.
Marinated Asparagus Medley
