Centralia Chamber Wraps Up Real World Challenge On Monday, March 26, the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce wrapped-up the month long “Real World Challenge” with Mrs. Brittany Huffʼs seventh grade Critical Thinking Class. The major change to this y e a r ʼs “ R e a l Wo r l d Challenge” was bringing it into the school, so more students can be impacted by the participating businesses. In total, there were 62 students who participated in this yearʼs program. “In the past, the program was during the summertime, and students worked on communications and marketing projects for local businesses. Many of the projects were technology based, like creating videos for websites or social media,” says Marcus Holland, executive director

of the Centralia Chamber of Commerce. “Several chamber members met as an education committee, including Centralia Junior High School, Kaskaskia College, Monsanto, Monken Auto Group, and Rhutasel & Associates. We talked about the needs of the businesses, the needs of the community, and the needs of the educators,” says Holland. What developed was a new focus for the “Real World Challenge,” representing the real jobs and careers that are in the Centralia area. Seven businesses participated in this yearʼs program: E g y p t i a n Wo r k s p a c e Partners, Kaskaskia College, Monken Auto Group, Monsanto, Rhutasel & Associates, SSM Health St. Maryʼs Hospital, and

Winning Edge. The businesses first introduced themselves to the classrooms with short presentations about what they do in the community and the types of jobs they have. Then, the students were able to choose which businesses they would like to work on a project with. On Monday, the businesses returned to the classroom to hear the studentsʼ resolutions to the projects given to them. Some of the projects were very real to the students. For example, students were able to plan a new parking lot and a new office space for the junior high, which are real projects being completed over the summer by participating businesses. “We are happy with the results of the new program and I want to thank all of the businesses who volunteered

like to duplicate this project for all area junior high level schools,” says Holland. The Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce offers programs and services for the community and chamber members. If you

How Do I Know He Lives? The touchstone of Christianity is the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The apostle Paul reasoned with those who did not believe in a resurrection. “And if Christ be not raised, your faith is in vain and you are yet in your sins . . . But now is Christ risen from the dead and become the first fruits of them that slept.” (I Corinthians 15:17, 20) Years ago, my grandfather asked me how I knew that Jesus arose from the dead. Instantly, the refrain from the old hymn “He Lives” came to mind. “You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.” The life changing experience of millions of Christ’s followers can’t be denied. But consider some of the many proofs of Christ’s resurrection. THE PROPHESIES OF THE RESURRECTION. Jesus’ first coming, birthplace, crucifixion, and resurrection were all foretold by the prophets in precise detail. We also have many types foreshadowing the resurrec-

tion such as Aaron’s almond br a n c h t h at b u d d e d . (Numbers 17:1-10) Jesus said that Jonah’s experience was a type of his resurrection. “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:40) David prophesied of Christ’s resurrection. “For you will not leave my soul in hell (Sheol — the grave); neither will you suffer your Holy One to see corruption.” (Psalm 16:10) Jesus foretold his death and resurrection numerous times. “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” (John 2:19, 21) THE PROOF OF THE EMPTY TOMB. What convinced the disciples of Christ’s resurrection to such a degree that they would willingly suffer a martyr’s death for the sake of Christ? The empty tomb is the greatest evidence. When the women went to the tomb of Jesus early on the first day of the week, they discovered the stone had been roll away and the tomb was empty. They ran to tell the disciples. When

John and Peter ran to the tomb, they discovered Jesus was not there, but his burial clothes were there and the cloth covering his head was folded up lying by itself. John looked in, “And he saw and believed.” (John 20:1-9) What did he see that made him believe? The empty tomb and the grave clothes and the head covering. THE PERSONAL ENCOUNTERS OF THE RESURRECTED CHRIST. The gospels record 12 instances of Jesus’ appearance to individuals after his resurrection and, on one occasion, he appeared to over 500 people at one time. Jesus also appeared to Paul on the road to Damascus, where he had a life changing conversion experience. When Jesus appeared to the disciples he showed them the nail prints in his hands and feet. Throughout history, millions of people have come into a personal experience with the risen Savior. THE POWER OF THE RESURRECTION. The apostle Paul summed up his life goal and purpose. “That I might know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings.” (Philippians 3:10) His resurrection power dwells in every believer. Paul tells us that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead will quicken our mortal bodies. (Romans 8:11) The power of his resurrection transforms lives. (I Corinthians 4:20) How do I know he lives? There are many convincing proofs of the resurrection. The greatest proof, I believe, is described in the hymn “He Lives” — “You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart. And he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me I am his own.” “But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name.” (John 1:12-13) HE LIVES! Editor's note: Last week after press time we learned that the shooter at Great Mills High School in Great Mills, Maryland, Austin Wyatt Rollins, shot himself; he was not shot by the armed officer. I'm going to try to set the record straight this week. If I've heard it once I've heard it a thousand times, an AR-15 rifle is an assault weapon. An AR-15 is not an assault weapon as much as the left would like everyone to believe it is. It's illegal for an individual to own a full automatic weapon unless they have a special license from the federal government, a Class 3, or if it's grandfathered in. So where does the confusion come in? It comes in from the word assault, and most people think AR stands for assault rifle. It stands for ArmaLite after the company that developed it. The fact is, the AR-15 is a semi automatic rifle; every single pull fires one round. The military assault weapon is an M4, or an M16 in the old days, that looks like an AR-15. So here's a good example: We all know what a Hummer looks like, but the civilian Hummer is different than the military Hummer. These days everyone seems to have an opinion on the NRA and the right to own and bear arms, challenging the Second Amendment. A few weeks ago I voiced my opinion on guns, and I will continue to believe guns aren't the problem. I listed what I view as the problems, from bad parenting, the lack of Christianity in the home, and violent video games, to the total lack of morality in our once Christian country that believed in Christian values and the Ten Commandments. And let's not forget the lack of funds for treating mental illness, as well as our educational system failures. Although not in all cases, I realize there are wonderful schools and great teachers, but I've seen situations of bullying not just by students but by teachers as well. Is that an excuse for school shootings? Absolutely not! But add it all up and there is the problem. I've also suggested some possible solutions. So how do we fix it? I can assure you, it's not to tear the Constitution up, but rather to address the real issues and start there to fix the problems. But in order to do that, we have to start

Illinois State Sen. Kyle McCarter Nominated To Ambassador Post

Last Wednesday, March 28, President Donald Trump nominated Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter to be an ambassador to the nation of Kenya. McCarter said, "It is an honor to be asked to represent President Trump and our great nation in a country where I have lived and served in for many years.

I look forward to bringing about a closer relationship that will benefit both our nations. It is bittersweet that I am now preparing for the funeral of my father who leaves a legacy of honoring God, serving others, and saving the lives of thousands of children in Kenya."

Women And Strength Training: What To Know Strength training should be an important part of women’s workout regimens. Despite this, the National Center for Health Statistics says only about 20 percent of women lift weights. Poor advice may be to blame. Women often fall victim to false information circulating about lifting weights. By getting educated, women can do much to improve their workouts. One of the more widely circulated myths regarding women and weightlifting is that women who lift heavy weights will get bulky. According to the exercise resource Nerd Fitness, when any person picks up progressively heavier weights as he or she gets

acclimated to lifting, that individual will get stronger, but not necessarily bigger. People who “bulk up” eat and train specifically for that purpose. In addition, women simply do not have the amount of testosterone necessary to bulk up without taking added measures designed to add bulk. IDEA Health and Fitness Network says strength training will help the average woman lose more fat than she’ll gain in muscle. One who trains two to three times a week for two months can gain roughly two pounds of muscle, but will lose 3.5 pounds of fat. Women who want to lose weight may employ strength training to reach their goals.

Strength training also can help decrease one’s risk of osteoporosis, strengthen bones, improve posture, and reduce back pain. Weight training strength-

ens the muscles and bones that support the body. Women should be open to the idea of lifting weights as part of a balanced workout regimen.

Strength Training Tips For Teens

Many young people begin strength training regimens as teenagers. When done in conjunction with cardiovascular training, strength training is part of a balanced exercise regimen that can help teenagers develop strong, healthy bodies. But strength training carries some risk, and teenagers should exercise caution as they begin strength training. • Always exercise under supervision. Many teenagers begin strength training through their participation in scholastic sports. That means they’re likely to be supervised by coaches and trainers. But those who have no such supervision should only perform strength training while under the supervision of their parents, trainers or another adult. Adult supervisors can advise teenagers on the proper form when strength training and make sure youngsters are not overexerting themselves. • Don’t turn strength training sessions into competitions. Often teenagers prefer to exercise in groups. While group exercise sessions can be beneficial and keep kids motivated, teenag-

ers should not turn such sessions into competitions. Doing so may encourage teenagers to lift more weight than their bodies can handle, increasing their risk for injury. • Stop if something feels off. Teenagers should stop strength training immediately if they feel any pain, popping sounds or other symptoms of injury or discomfort. Athletes can speak with a team trainer while teens who are not working out with a team can speak with their parents and physicians. Teens should explain symptoms in full, giving honest answers when trainers or physicians ask about levels of pain. Stopping a strength training session at the first tweak or sign of something extraordinary can prevent serious injury. • Don’t strength train too much. Muscles need time to recover from strength training sessions, so teenagers should limit their strength training sessions to about three times per week. Strength training on back-to-back days can contribute to injury in young athletes, so teenagers should give their bodies at least one day off between weightlifting sessions. • Use light weights at first. Teenagers may not know where to begin in regard to how much weight to lift. The medical resource WebMD advises teenagers avoid heavy weights when beginning strength training sessions, instead choosing weights they can easily lift 10 times, with the last two repetitions being increasingly difficult. Weight can then be slowly increased as teens gain strength and feel no pain. WebMD also notes that teenagers should avoid heavy weights until they are fully through puberty to avoid damage to their bones and tendons.

Strategies To Get Kids To Exercise Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. That’s not just true for adults, but for children and teenagers as well. Parents concerned about their kids living sedentary lives may have more to worry about than they know. According to a 2017 study published in the journal Preventive Medicine that analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey from 2003-2004 and 20052006, 19-year-olds spent as much time being inactive and sedentary as 60-year-olds. Getting kids to be more active may be especially difficult for today’s parents, who must contend with the internet, social media, tablets, smartphones, and other distractions as they try to encourage their kids to unplug and spend more time being physically active. But parents can try various strategies to get kids off the couch and exercising. • S et a p ositive example. Kids, especially young children, often try to emulate their parents. Parents can

capitalize on kids’ desire to be like mom and dad by exercising in front of their children. Young children may not be ready to lift weights or run on the treadmill, but parents can embrace kidfriendly exercises, such as walking and cycling. Invite kids along for daily bike rides or go for family walks around the neighborhood after dinner. • Park the car. Kids don’t need to know they’re exercising in order to be more physically active. In lieu of driving to the bank or pharmacy, parents can leave the car at home and ride their bikes alongside their children when running errands. If possible, parents can walk youngsters to and from school rather than driving them. • Choose friendfriendly activities. Adults employ the buddy system as a means to motivate themselves to keep exercising, and that same principle can apply to children, who might be more excited about physical activity if their friends are joining them. Team sports provide chances to exercise with

Exercising alongside their children is an effective way for parents to get their kids to be more physically active.

friends, as do organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of America. But even inviting a child’s friend along on a family hike or bike ride may make such activities more fun for kids. • Give gifts that encourage physical activity. Kids might want the latest device or video game for their birthdays, but parents also can give gifts that encourage youngsters to be physically active. Bicycles,

rollerblades, ice skates, and sports equipment are just a handful of potential gifts that may compel kids to exercise more. Childhood obesity is a significant problem, with the 2015-2016 NHANES reporting that 20.6 p e rc e nt of yout hs between the ages of 12 and 19 were obese. Getting kids off the couch and exercising more often can help reduce those figures and ensure healthier futures for kids of all ages.

PAWS and claws A Page Dedicated To Our Four-Footed Fuzzy Children.

Rest in Peace, Riley

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I wanted to write and tell you about "Riley," a little

dog we fostered. He came to us after being rescued from a terrible living situation, and he had spent a long time getting medical treatment at the local shelter before being cleared to stay with a family. Riley was emaciated when he was rescued. He was missing one eye from an attack by another dog. As a mixed-breed toy terrier,

Williams Pond Rescue for Horses 618-339-1571 • Salem, IL

he had specific health needs that weren't met, and by the time he reached the shelter had severe kidney disease and diminished neurological function. The vet told us that we would likely be his last family. Because his heart and kidneys were damaged, along with other issues, he was not expected to live more than six months. Knowing this, we were determined to make his final days as comfortable and loved as possible. We have another rescue, a fierce little mutt named "Zu-Zu," who became Riley's little sister and protector, cuddling next to him in his doggie bed. Despite the abuse he suffered, Riley was an incred-

ibly loving dog. Under our care and with Zu-Zu at his side, his health improved. He lived with us for just over two years before finally passing away last week. We were thrilled to foster Riley and just wanted the world to know about him. Please tell your readers, if they have the means, to consider fostering rescued pets to prepare them for eventual adoption. — Tracey L., Gloucester, Massachusetts DEAR TRACEY: Riley indeed sounds like a wonderful dog, and I'm glad he found his way to you. Thank you for sharing his story. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Resist a confrontation with that irksome person. The matter will soon blow over anyway. Meanwhile, channel your high Arian energy into areas with more positive potential. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The innovative Bovine finds a creative way to resolve a sensitive domestic problem by midweek. A former colleague returns with an intriguing business suggestion. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) An unexpected critical statement from someone you trust could catch you momentarily off guard. But you soon recover your equilibrium and rise to the challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel you can handle a new project on your own. But advice from someone with experience could help you avoid possibly costly as well as time-consuming obstacles. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Waiting for others to make decisions is difficult for the take-charge Lion. But by week’s end, you should hear news that will help you regain control of the situation. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your superjudgmental side could dominate the week unless you try to keep it in check. Otherwise you risk offending people, including some who are very close to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect more information to come out about that possible career shift.

Meanwhile, your loving concern helps someone close to you get through a worrisome period. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Despite an occasional setback, workplace pressures should continue to ease through most of the week. This would be a good time to plan that long-delayed trip. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sage Sagittarian quickly recognizes an opportunity when she or he sees it, especially if it’s one you’ve been planning for. Take aim and go for it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Sea Goat’s unique insight guides you as you check out a questionable situation. Your efforts should prove rewarding for you and your many supporters. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might want to pace yourself a bit more. Rushing could lead to serious slip-ups. Take more time to check out details you might otherwise overlook. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The best way to resolve those remaining problems is to ask others for help. They’ll be happy to do so, especially when you agree to share the credit for a job well done. Here Are The FACTS!

IGA’s own beef buyers are on the market constantly selecting only “Top Rail” beef for our stores. Only three out of ten choice steers meet our rigid specifications. This super beef is called “TableRite” to distinguish it as the very finest beef money can buy... Yet, because of IGA’s united buying power, it costs no more than ordinary beef you can get at “other” stores. TableRite beef is only available at your favorite Hometown Proud Borowiak’s IGA!
