A Vision Becomes A Reality By Cathy Stuehmeier

Many Christians have visions, some more than others. The Rock Church that was once a branch of the Orchardville Church has been blessed with many through their leadership over the years, starting with Pastor Mark Shell. The Rock was originally known as the Orchardville Church. In the beginning, a little over 100 people who drove to the Orchardville Church every Sunday decided under Pastor Shell to start a Centralia branch. The original building was built in 2008, with the Holy Spirit moving in the pastor's heart as well as the 100 to 130 members. After meeting and planning, the first service was held on Easter Sunday in that very year. The original church seated 280 and was packed from day one. Within two weeks they had to double the parking, and by 2010 the church had to expand to hold up to 520.

After the Centralia Orchardville Church began, Pastor Shell then started the Fairfield branch. Shortly before his death in 2015 Pastor Mark Shell called Pastor Steve Upchurch, the Centralia pastor, and the pastor at the Fairfield branch and told them that he felt it was in the best interest of all three churches for them to become independent of one another. At that time the Centralia leaders and the members sat down and picked a new name, and the Rock Church of Centralia came to be. The new name was officially recognized three years ago on Easter Sunday 2015. With the congregation growing in all age groups, it didn't take long before, under the guidance of Pastor Upchurch the decision was made that the teenagers needed their own area. At that time, two major decisions were made.

A Vision Becomes A Reality

“Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.”

— Jonathan Swift

Continued from page 1

So Pastor Steve and his congregation went to work. The Pastor, with no experience in design or blueprinting, started by drawing out a design that was 80x100, enough for a gym for the teens. But after talking to a number of churches with experience in these kinds of additions — who were saying don't build too small — that plan went to 90x140, with a total square footage of 18,500. They named it the Rock Family Life Center. To d ay t h i ng s are popping at the Life Center. On any Sunday evening you'll find 50 to 75 teens gathered. However, for special events — like after an Orphan football or basketball game —there have been as many as 250 plus enjoying the fellowship, entertainment and food that's provided. There are many facets to the Life Center. The Rock provides opportunities to give back to the community like Spero who pro-

vides counseling and Dynamic Counseling — just to name a few — as well as Youthbuild holding their recent graduation there. The Rock Church Life Center is complete with a full size gym, kitchen, 4 classrooms, and a 90 x 40 teen loft, giving these young people a place of their own, complete with sanctuary and a recreation room. At the end of our conversation, a loving, kind, faith-filled minister that lives in every way what he preaches, my pastor, my brother in Christ, my dear friend said, "We're using

the building addition for more than I thought we would." And I can assure you they are making good use of it. The Rock Church is a Bible-based church and the church services are at 8:30 and 10:30 every Sunday morning as well as Wednesday night Bible study at 6:00 p.m. and "Rock Solid" for the Rock students 6th - 12th grades on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. The church is located at 515 Airport Road in Centralia. The phone number is 533-3700. More pictures can be found at www.theshoppers weekly.com.

In the news: • North Korea will stop missile testing and shut down nuclear test sites • DRN sues • James Comey...be careful what you ask for The big news of the week is the notorious leader of North Korea (since 2011) Kim Jong-Un announced last week that he will stop missile testing and shut down a major nuclear test site. Very good news for President Trump. Trump has agreed to sit down with the North Korean leader in May or the first of June, which, in my opinion, is a historical moment. In the last 60 years no American President has sat down with North Korea. Could it be that the recent air strikes in Syria might have opened Kim Jong-Un's eyes? But trust, two things will happen:

1) The U.S. won't, no matter what, back away from South Korea. 2) If the leader of North Korea starts playing games (which he's been known to do) during the future talks between North Korea and the U.S., Trump has made it clear he'll walk away. Only time will tell the story on this recent development. I hope and pray this all works out! On to the DNC's lawsuit against the Trump administration, WikiLeaks and the Russian Government. The charge: Interference in the 2016 election. I guess, in other words, collusion. Really! The party of Hillary Clinton, Donna Brazile and Debbie Wasserman Schultz. So let's look at reality. Donna Brazile, vice chairman of the DNC at the time, gave Hillary

Clinton the questions for an upcoming debate. Now if that's not collusion I don't know what is. Hillary Clinton— there isn't enough space in the paper to point out her wrongdoing. And then there's Debbie Wasserman Schultz that literally colluded to cost Bernie Sanders the election! Current DNC Chairman Tom Perez filed this suit on Friday of last week, saying, "There is a mountain of evidence," and turning over 66 pages of documents. I'm curious what that is! He continued to say it was nothing more than an assault on Democracy, and then said, "we" — referring to the DNC — had a wonderful candidate, referring to Hillary. In my opinion, Tom Perez falls nothing short of totally disillusioned. Keep in mind, currently,

3

even under Mueller's witch hunt nothing has come out. The bottom line, as someone put it on Meet the Press Sunday morning, there's no there there. But what did happen in filing this suit was it did a lot to help the Republican Party in the midterm elections, just when the Democrats were, in my opinion, ma k ing s ome headway! On to James Comey and his new book full of finger pointing. The fact is, as the Director of the FBI, Comey didn't follow the rules with Trump or Hillary Clinton. James Comey, in fact, leaked confidential documents to the press, knowing they would be reported on. So the bottom line is, the other fact that remains is today there is still no evidence of collusion. The House and the Senate conducted their own investigation and found nothing. Furthermore, according to James Comey, Donald Trump told him — referring to the collusion with Russia — "Get to the bottom of this." Seems that Comey is contradicting himself. I would tell James Comey, "Be careful what you ask for, you may get it." Things could blow up in his face, and in the end he could face legal consequences for leaking confidential material. Time will tell. Another possibility, in the end, all this could flush out that Obama's intelligence team messed around with a secret dossier that could show that Obama and Clinton were messing around with the 2016 election. Oh the webs they weave. And last but not least, remembering former First Lady Barbara Bush.. she represented a civilized political America. God rest her soul. Until next week.

Networking Association met on April 12 at the C entralia Recreation Complex. President Mike Chambers opened the meeting with a prayer and the Pledge. He c ont i nu e d t he meeting with discussions on what is happening around Centralia. Several things were discussed including information about the updating of the bridge on Route 161 west out by Shattuc Road. Curt Lackey was the presenter. He spoke on changes on state legislation. He reported that there were 250 bills passed. He did say that there were many more on the state agenda that did not pass. He shared information that the bike was the state transportation, while corn is the state grain

declared but is not going to be a paid holiday. He i n f o r m e d t h e members that once you apply and receive your drivers license you are now automatically registered to vote. As of now court records for youth under 18 cannot be opened dealing with other cases that come up in court. The possible changing of that age is being looked into. He continued to speak at length about bills dealing with child custody. When he was a judge he felt that the court never received enough information to make a proper recommendation. He felt like there should be a required time before a final custody decision is made. Some professionals feel that custody is not the correct term to use.

Pictured are Curt Lackey and Mike Chambers. It usually occurs that one parent has the custody while the other parent is given an order for child support. The term co parenting has been used but the probably would not be the best term either. There will always be issues when dealing with what is best for the child.

SINA members thank Curt for a great presentation. Next week's speaker is from SPERO in Mt. Vernon speaking on the SAFE Families Program. Anyone that is interested in SINA can contact any member or can call Tina Suarez at 247-3332.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Gate Beautiful Barbara Bush was a remarkable woman. A news clip showed former President Bush reading some of the letters he had sent his wife when he was a fighter pilot. H. W. referred to his wife as beautiful. Beautiful may be hard to define, but we know when we see something truly beautiful. Peter and John were on their way to the temple at the hour of prayer. They saw a lame beggar at the Gate Beautiful. The Jews had many names for the gates of the temple and Jerusalem. John saw a vision of the New Jerusalem, the Holy City above that has 12 gates made of a single pearl. But these gates were only entrances to the awesome beauty within. For various reasons, the lame beggar could not go into the temple. Did he realize the beauty that was only a few yards beyond where he sat? I had a vision of a woman wearing an old, tattered, dirty dress, that looked like beggars clothes. She was pushing an old rusty bicycle with an empty wire basket affixed to the handlebars, uphill toward a gate. I believe that gate was the Gate Beautiful. In the Old Testament four starving lepers decided to leave their place outside the city gate where people were dying from a severe famine. They went into the enemy camp and discovered that the army had fled, leaving behind their food and spoils.

As they feasted, they concluded that they would be guilty of great sin if they didn’t go back to their city and announce the good news of abundance. (II Kings 7:3) The prophet Isaiah prophesied of the beauty that awaits inside the Gate Beautiful, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor . . . to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. (Isaiah 61:1-3) Apply the message of Peter and John and come through the Gate Beautiful into the beauty of the One who awaits you with open arms — Jesus, the Messiah. FOCUS ON JESUS. Peter looked at the lame beggar, “Silver and gold, I do not have, but such as I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk. (Acts 3:1-6) Money cannot save you, satisfy you, or solve all your problems — Jesus can! FAITH IN THE NAME OF JESUS. Peter and John had something more precious and powerful than money. They had faith in the name of Jesus. Demons flee in the name of Jesus. Prayers are answered in his name. Miracles happen by faith in the name of Jesus. There is salvation in no other name. FELLOWSHIP WITH JESUS and his followers will

April is

Every 60 seconds an animal is abused. Even though there are people in the world working on preventatives for animal cruelty all year, April is a special month for ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) because it is Prevention of Cruelty To Animals Month. Supporters celebrate this month by raising awareness about important issues dealing with animals. The ASPCA hopes the communities can join in and help them by getting involved. A person can do this in many ways. They can start a fund raising campaign page. Create a personal ASPCA fundraising page as an important event in your life and share it with family and friends, e.g. birthday, memory of pet that has passed, etc. Do a run drive like a 5K and the money raised will help animals in need nationwide. One form of abuse is dog fighting. April 8th is considered National Dog Fighting Awareness Day. This is the fourth year that ASPCA has brought attention to this brutal form of abuse. Dog fighting is a blood sport in which dogs are forced to fight each other for peoples' entertainment and monetary gain. This cruel inhumane act is a felony in all 50 states, but it still continues. We as a community can take action to stop it by not being silent and spreading the word. The Humane Society has a website where you can get

breed, maybe two. If you see a site with five or more breeds and mixed breeds it's a puppy mill. 5. Multiple litters. When you call and they say they have a waiting list on litters they have and a waiting list on the unborn, more than likely you are looking at a puppy mill. If the breeder has 30 puppies, it's definitely a puppy mill. 6. Vaccinations. Puppy mills do not like to spend money. That being said, more than likely the parents may not be vaccinated (always ask). Puppies have probably not been not vaccinated or there are so many they've been done twice. 7. Beware of breeders making promises. If you have a certain mix and they promise that the dog will have a certain type of quality of one breed or the other, steer clear. 8. Cleanliness. Puppy mill puppies will likely have a smell like a kennel and they have poor coat quality. 9. Breeders should care enough about what happens to a puppy that she / he should have a contract protecting you both. 10. Too young. There is a certain age you are allowed to take a puppy from his/her mother. If the breeder lets you take them before time, more than likely it's because they do not want to have that extra expense. Neglect is one other form of abuse. It is the failure to provide basic care required for an animal to thrive. According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, at first glance cases may seem less egregious than a single brutal act of violent abuse, but severe neglect can mean extended periods of extreme suffering resulting in permanent injury or even death. The Animal Legal Defense Fund maintains a database of criminal cases in the U.S. It was reported to their organization 30% of cases that they tracked was animal neglect, often associated with human neglect. This could mean the elderly, or young children, or other dependents. Neglect could also include handling animals on a large scale as the puppy mills mentioned earlier, or hoarding animals. We as a community need to put a stop to the cruelty of animals. They cannot speak for themselves. We are responsible for those who are unable to defend themselves. April may be set aside for the awareness of animal cruelty, but we as human beings should always be the voice of those that cannot be heard.

free packets to do this. The packets include posters, postcards brochures, etc. If you suspect dog fighting in your neighborhood, tell your local law enforcement to contact The Humane Society of the United States. It has a standard reward now doubled to $5,000.00. A couple of ways to spot these violent acts are: • Numerous pit bull types being kept in one location, especially multiple dogs chained and unsocialized; and • Dogs who have scars on their face, legs, and back area. Another form of animal cruelty is called puppy mills. Puppy Mills are an establishment where the people breed puppies for sale, typically on an incentive basis, in a condition regarded as inhumane. The profit is of more importance than the care given. Here are 10 signs from the website iheartdogs.com to see if a puppy that you may be interested in has come from a puppy mill: 1. Out of state. You really should stay away from pet stores when puppy buying. Be worried if they are coming from out of state, especially midwestern states. 2. If a breeder cannot let you meet the parents, you should walk away. Not meeting the parents would be like buying a car without knowing the make of the car. For all you know those people did not even breed the puppy. Buying and selling him/her could be secondhand for unknown reasons. 3. Let's meet. If you call a breeder and they say "lets meet" when you ask to visit their kennel, be wary. Unless there is an extreme circumstance, there should be no reason you cannot see where the puppy was born. 4. Reputable breeders. Breeders focus on one

Is Microchipping Worth The Cost? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: To save money, I take my two cats, "Betty" and "Wilma," to a local shot clinic that is held every spring. This year, the tech asked if I wanted my cats microchipped. I said no, because they're indoor cats and it seems like an unnecessary expense. He looked at me like I was almost a criminal for not saying yes! What do you think? — D ottie in Knoxv ille, Tennessee DEAR DOTTIE: It's entirely your decision

whether to microchip your pets, so there was no need for the tech to get all judgmental about it. Since I have your attention, though, allow me to throw some statistics your way. A 2009 study cited by the American Veterinary Medical Association found that dogs without microchips were returned to their owners 22 percent of the time, whereas microchipped dogs were returned 52 percent of the time. Cats without microchips were reunited with their owners less than 2 percent of the time, whereas microchipped cats went back home 38 percent of the time. Now, I know Betty and Wilma are purely indoor cats, which vastly improves their chances for healthy, long lives. However, accidents happen. Doors get left ajar. Thunderstorms roll in. And indoor cats ...

get outside. Your cats probably have collars and tags — and that's great. But cats are notorious for slipping their collars. While a microchip doesn't guarantee your cats will be found and reunited with you, it does greatly improve the odds.

Microchips have been standardized and data networks greatly improved over the past decade. So, while it is always your choice to microchip your cats, I do think it's worth the extra cost to do so. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Savor These Beautiful (And Edible) Flowers

Marigolds are just one of the many flowers that can be consumed. Cultivating beautiful blooms is a popular pastime for gardeners near and far. While gazing at a yard full of vibrant

colors or enjoying the aroma of freshly cut blooms is enough for many gardeners, others may want to embrace a

long-enduring tradition — growing edible flowers. Cooking with edible flowers is a trend that has endured for centuries.

According to Fleurs Gourmandes, the first recorded history of edible flowers occurred in 140 BC. Use of calendula in salads dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Victorian-era candied flowers and flower-encrusted sweets took edible flowers to new heights. Today, nothing may make a meal seem more gourmet than the inclusion of flower petals in the recipe. Of course, before delving into the expanded world of cooking using edible blooms, some notes of caution should first be mentioned. Avoid flowers that may have been sprayed with fungicides, herbicides or insec-

ticides. To verify safety, only use edible flowers grown specifically for this purpose, not flowers picked from roadsides or from landscapes. Secondly, remember that not all flowers are edible. Some can be poisonous or cause severe gastrointestinal upset when consumed. That means all flowers should be carefully researched prior to experimenting with them in the kitchen. To begin growing — and eating — edible flowers, refer to this list of varieties deemed safe and be careful to doublecheck against allergies and any interactions with medications prior to use. • Allium: These are blossoms from the allium family, which include garlic, chives and leeks. These flowers can be used to add flavor to foods. • Basil blossoms: It may be customary to pinch off the blossoms of basil, which come in colors from white to lavender in order to stimulate growth of the leaves of the plant. However, the blossoms, which are more mild than the leaves, can be tasty as well. • Calendula: Sometimes known as “poor man’s saffron,” this yellow flower in the marigold family can taste like saffron w h e n it’s s aut é e d . Uncooked, calendula can have spicy notes that add variety to salads and gar-

nishes. • Chamomile: This plant features small, daisy-type flowers that can be used in treats and teas. • Cilantro: The flowers from the cilantro plant can be eaten, just as the leaves and the seeds that form the spice coriander. • Fennel: Just like the plant itself, the flowers of fennel have a subtle licorice flavor. • Hibiscus: Hibiscus blooms are famously used in hibiscus tea, which is tart and cranberry-like. • Lavender: The sweet, perfumed taste of lavender works in cocktails and desserts. • Marigolds: These tiny flowers may be used in vegetable gardens to repel animal and insect pests. Blossoms have a fresh citrus taste that can be used in cooking. • Pansies: These vibrant early bloomers can take on a wintergreen flavor and look beautiful when glazed on cakes and other desserts. • Roses: Beautiful to behold, rose petals can lend a subtle, fruity flavor to many different foods as well. • Zucchini: The blossoms from this squash, which have a slightly sweet taste, can be enjoyed in many different ways. Some people batter and fry the blossoms, while others may stuff them with herbs and cheeses.

Stock Up On Gardening Essentials

Gardening attracts new devotees year after year. While Baby Boomers may spend more on gardening than any other demographic, even millennials are getting on the gardening bandwagon. A 2016 Nat iona l Gardening Survey from the National Gardening Market Research Company found the average amount spent on backyard or balcony gardening projects exceeded $400 per household. More than $36 billion was spent in 2015, and the vast majority of the six million “new” gardening house-

holds belonged to millennials. When it comes to outfitting a gardening shed, gardeners will not want to be without certain tools and gear. • Digging shovel: A rounded-blade digging shovel is needed to plant shrubs and trees as well as to excavate areas in a landscape. • Rake: A rake can be used to clear the ground, remove thatch and leaves from a lawn and level soil in a garden bed. • Hand tools: Hand tools, such as a hand fork and

trowel, are essential for small digging jobs, especially when working with flower pots or containers. • Edging spade: This flatblade shovel is handy to have around because of its versatility. Edging spades can slice turf, edge gardens and cut through roots. • Pruners: Sharpened pruners can cut through stems and branches effortlessly. • Hose: Choose a highquality hose that is lightweight and durable, as hoses will always be necessary.

The Basics Of Mulching Mulch is available in various forms. Like other land and garden products, mulch can go a long way toward helping plants thrive. Mulch comprises just about any material that is spread over the surface of soil. Its purpose is primarily to help soil retain moisture. In addition, mulch can staunch weed growth, keep soil cool, improve the aesthetics of garden beds, and even improve soil nutrient composition. When the right mulch is chosen, it can reduce the amount of time homeowners spend watering and weeding their gardens and insulate plants from dramatic changes in weather. Gardeners may not realize that mulch also can prevent garden soil from becoming overly compacted, according to HGTV. This can mean beneficial earthworms can move easily through the soil, creating channels for water and depositing their nutrient-rich waste products. Gardeners can choose organic or inorganic mulch. Organic mulches are derived from natural materials that will decompose

over time, lending organic matter as well as various nutrients to the soil. Organic mulches also may contain beneficial microorganisms that can fight against plant diseases. Inorganic mulches may be made of stones, landscape fabrics and plastic. Both types will need to be amended or replaced as they degrade. Those who want the most environmentally-friendly mulching materials can choose allnatural mulches instead of synthetic alternatives. To work effectively, mulch should be applied in a two- to three-inch layer of material, state the experts at Old World Garden Farms. This is the ideal amount to retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth without choking plants. Also, mulch that is too thick may make it impossible for water to penetrate, or it may prevent the soil from airing out, causing continuously wet conditions that lead to root and stem rot. The University of Connecticut Home & Garden Education Center says mulch should not be placed directly against plant

crowns or tree bases, as this can promote the development of disease. It may also serve as a habitat for barkand stem-eating rodents. The center also suggests watering newly installed bark or wood mulches to prevent fungi from colonizing in dry mulch and causing problems like a water-repellent surface on the mulch. Home landscapers considering mulch types may find that compost, manure and grass clippings (from nonpesticide-treated lawns) can be inexpensive and versatile in garden beds. The home advice site The Spruce notes that newspaper may also be effective. Many newspapers have switched over to organic dyes, especially for their black and white sections. Newspapers are an inexpensive way to suppress weeds and act like organic mulch in beds. They can be covered with other organic mulch, like shredded bark, for more visual appeal. Mulch can be a versatile asset when doing gardening projects around home landscapes. And the benefits are more than just aesthetic.
