Community Trust Bank: Serving Its Communities For Over 105 Years

Community Trust Bank has a long heritage of being a family owned independent financial institution for much of its history. In February of 1923 Alfred Pitchford was appointed president of the Richview State Bank. Alfred was the grandfather of Lester Pitchford who served as President and Chairman of the Board. Lester served as president for 50 years after being appointed in 1950. Currently serving as chairwoman of the board is Lester’s daughter, Nancy Roethemeyer who replaced her grandfather, Raymond Pitchford upon his death in 1976 and Lester’s grand-

daughter Sheila Burcham is currently serving as President/CEO. Over the past 158 years, Community Trust Bank has been known by three different names. Starting out in 1860 the bank was a private business run by Samuel Phillip Cooper and called the The Exchange Bank of S.P. Cooper located in Richview, Illinois. In 1912, when Mr. Cooper passed away his son-in-law, Jack Stanton sold the bank to a group of investors who changed the name to The Farmer’s and Merchants Bank. On August 7, 1913 the State of Illinois gave permission to another

Sheila Burcham, President/CEO and the late past chairman Lester Pitchford.

group of men to form the Richview State Bank and as a result, by September 15th of the same year, the new bank had bought out Farmer’s and Merchants Bank. After moving to Irvington on December 12, 1966, the directors changed the name to Community Trust Bank for which it is known today. This financial institution has seen many economic changes throughout its history. During the depression in 1932, the bank was closed for two weeks due to the Bank Moratorium but re-opened after a trip to Springfield with the books to prove its solvency. However, during this time, in order to keep the bank operating, the 3% semi-annual dividend was eventually reduced to zero and the $1 per meeting directors fee was given back to the bank by all board

members. These measures paid off as the bank weathered the depression almost unscathed. Community Trust has been through numerous expansions after the move to Irvington in 1966. The building in Irvington was expanded once in the early 80’s. In 1981, the board and management decided to expand their operations to include the Centralia area by putting a branch facility on the east side of town and an ATM facility on the west side of town. This facility was again expanded by doubling its space and adding a basement in the fall of 1994 enabling the data processing operations to be moved in the fall of 1996. Wanting to expand its market and continue to grow, the Board of Directors decided to expand with a branch facility in the Nashville, Illinois area.

Jefferson County Chamber Of Commerce Is Celebrating 94 Years! Did you know the Jefferson County Chamber was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization on May 16, 1924? May 2018, will be our 94th anniversary as an active Chamber in Jefferson County, IL. Did you know the Chamber was founded by a group of local businessmen, with Vol E. Richardson being their first president? Over the years there have been 89 presidents. Did you know that a disastrous fire in January 1974 destroyed most of the records for the Chamber? It took until 1985 before the Chamber found a new home. The early Chamber of Commerce promoted and aided nearly every new commercial or industrial development in the community. The Chamber is still living up to these values by promoting our member businesses. We strive to promote growth, credibility and networking in the business community. We help our members have a voice and stand out against the rest. Come and be a part of your local Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.

Spero Family Services: Providing Christ-Centered Human Services Happy First Anniversary to Spero Family Services! It’s hard to believe that we have already reached the end of our first full year as Spero. Spero Family Services was formerly known as the United Methodist Children’s Home, and although it was a challenging effort to rebrand a 103 year old organization full of rich history in this community, our new name has been well received by our community. Since the name change, we have continued to thrive, growing by 40% in both services offered, counties served, and size of our workforce — now employing over 200 people! Spero Family Services is based in Mt. Vernon, IL, with offices in West Frankfort, Murphysboro and Centralia. Over the past year we have also acquired the former Masonic Children’s home in Murphysboro which was slated to close, added several new programs like Wraparound, expanded our Family Foundations program, added a Mental Health Juvenile Justice program, and began accepting Medicaid for services through our Counseling & Wellness Center. We couldn’t celebrate our first year as Spero, however, without you! We extend a heartfelt thank you to our friends, investors, volunteers, employees, and of course…our clients. We are grateful for your faithful support and constant encouragement of our mission to provide hope, help and healing throughout Southern Illinois.

The Centralia Recreation Complex, Celebrating Their 22nd Year

The Centralia Recreation Complex, located at 115 East Second Street, was a $5 million project that was built with private funds. Getting the Complex built was a team effort. There were also almost 200 individuals involved in fund raising efforts for the Complex. In addition, more than 700 individuals contributed to the campaign. On July 10, 1992 the Centralia Foundation announced that it had initiated a study to determine the feasibility of building a community center. Foundation trustee Bruce Geary was

named chairman of the Building Committee. Preliminary architectural designs for the proposed $7 million community recreation center were unveiled on July 28, 1992. The master p l an , d e s i g n e d for a maximum of 70,000 square feet, was split into three construction phases. The first phase would include a two-court gym. The second phase was to include an indoor pool and the third phase could contain a second g y m and racquetb a l l. Construction drawings and bids were completed in the first half of 1994, ground was

broken on June 26, 1994, and the Centralia Recreation Complex opened on October 4, 1995. The new building was huge, with 60,000 square feet. The dual gym, with a three-lane, 1/12 mile jogging track suspended around it, covered 13,000 square feet. The Complex has always offered year round activities

for the whole family. In the 22 years since they first opened, The Centralia Recreation Complex has continued to add new equipment and classes to their facility. For more information about their current schedule of classes and other offerings, please call them at 618-5323214.

The History of Country Bob's

Where do great products come from? Usually, they are the result of much time being exerted and a tremendous amount of love being invested. At that point, you can say, “That’s mine! I made that.” That’s the way Country Bob Edson created his All Purpose Sauce. In 1968, Country Bob perfected the sauce of his dreams. After years of giving the sauce to friends and family, he began to sell it

in 1977. The reaction was overwhelming just as it is today. Almost everyone who tries Country Bob’s All Purpose Sauce becomes a lifelong user. And why not, it is the perfect complement to practically any meal set on your table. It was actually October of 1982 when Country Bob, Inc. became the company, which remains today. Bob Edson, Terry Edson, Al Malekovic and Reed Malekovic formed

a corporation with equal ownership. Since that time, Country Bob’s distribution has magnified regionally in all directions from our corporate office located in Centralia, Illinois. Even with the tremendous growth we have not forgotten where we came from, continuing in our relentless pursuit of product excellence. Along with our All Purpose Sauce, we have expanded our product line to include BBQ Sauce and

Seasoning Salt as well as Apple Chipotle and Honey Habanero All Purpose Sauce and the newest member to the family Country Bob’s Marinade. With our fully automated bottling line we also have the capability of producing Private Label products for stores or restaurants. It would be nice if we could claim responsibility for the success of the company, however, credit must be given where credit is due. Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” We have placed true ownership of Country Bob, Inc. in the hands of God. “Christ is our CEO” and He is an Awesome Boss!

Eddie Ross Construction: Family Owned Quality Eddie Ross Construction is a family owned business in Centralia, IL. The owners are Eddie and Paula Ross. Their son Ryan Ross, and long time friend and employee Phillip Wachholz, help Eddie with the business. Eddie’s father Bill Ross started the excavating business many years ago and Eddie worked for his dad until the early 1980s. He then bought his own equipment and continued to work with his dad but in the mid 1980s he began to do a lot more construction and eventually got out of the excavating business. Bill Ross passed away in 1985 and about that time Eddie went into commercial and residential construction. When Eddie’s and Paula’s sons, Chad and Ryan, came alongside them, they got more into the concrete business. In the late 1980s, they began doing colored concrete. Chad worked with them up until 2016 and Ryan is still with them. If you need a concrete floor, flatwork or basement repair, give Eddie Ross Construction a call!

Straith’s Jewelers: Serving You Since 1939

George Straith was a watchmaker in St. Louis. He heard of a small store in Centralia that was going out of business. It was a great economy and George decided to take a leap of faith. He moved to Centralia and set up shop, not knowing anyone. He put his watchmaker’s bench in the front window to attract the attention of people passing by and did his watch repairs from there. George met a girl from Centralia, fell in love and made Virginia into Mrs. Straith. They had three children but the youngest, Karen, was the

only one to join the business. Straith’s is a 79 year old business, with Karen being the second generation. Straith’s is known for their friendly service, wide selection and trusted integrity in the jewelry, watch and giftware business. In business serving southern Illinois since 1939.

Farmers State Bank Was Established In 1911 The site of the original location.

The bank’s second home - built in 1967.

Ray W. Schnitzmeyer as cashier.

Farmers State Bank was organized in 1911 and opened its doors for business as a private bank when the owners and directors of Gluesenkamp Bank of St. Peters, who knew something of Hoffman, concluded it would be a good place to start a bank. The private bank was changed to a state bank in 1921. In 1933 Ray W. Schnitzmeyer of Hoffman was elected as a cashier and served until 1967 when he was elected to serve as executive Vice President. The current president is Glenn Knolhoff. From 1911 to 2018 — 107 years — the bank’s mission statement remains the same: to offer the finest in banking services as well as being involved in community. Farmers State Bank came from a humble beginning to now having three locations for your convenience.
