JCHS Presents Sid Milliner — Ghost Towns Of Southern Illinois The Jefferson County Historical Society (JCHS) will present Sid Milliner-Ghost Towns of southern Illinois on Saturday, May 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the Schweinfurth Museum at the Historical Village. Come listen and learn about ghost towns of southern Illinois presented by former history teacher, Sid Milliner. It may be a surprise that there are many ghost towns in southern Illinois. Illinois was known as the West at one time. In southern Illinois, there were early railroad and mining towns. Some of these towns are completely covered over with brush and are not
remembered except in the record books. There were once more than 800 communities in southern Illinois that have one by one faded into ghost towns. The sponsors for this program are Aletta Lawrence, Ryan Swan and Off Broadway Cleaners. This program is provided free of charge, but donations are appreciated. The Jefferson County Historical Village is located at 1411 North 27th Street in Mt. Vernon. For more information contact the Historical Society office at 618246-0033. Submitted Photo

Words Matter Publishing Gold Shelf Grand Opening
“All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.
By Scott Pinkowski Words Matter Publishing held a grand opening for its Gold Shelf on Saturday, April 28 at King City Books in Mt. Vernon. In the rough and tumble world of book publishing, it's very difficult for a new author to get their foot in the door. Words Matter Publishing, which specializes in finding writing talent in places most publishing houses won't even look, is prepared to change that. The Gold Shelf is a series of unique, handcrafted shelves that will be installed in retail stores and stocked w i t h Wo r d s M a t t e r Publishing authors' books to help make them accessible and to build a fan base for new authors. Along with Words Matter Publishing CEO Tammy Koelling, authors on hand at the grand opening were, Deb Obermeier, author of the A Simple Stitch Series; Kathy Mitrano, author of The

Local author Deb Obermeier has published two books in her series, to date, A Simple Stitch: A Common Thread and A Simple Stitch: A Time To Mend, which tell the story of yarn shop owner Eliza who lives above her shop in the fictional town of Spring Forrest. Along with the changes and challenges of Eliza's and her family's lives, the books are rich with stories from the pasts of the characters which tell of the good ole days. Kathy Mitrano's book, The Gathering Table may look like a simple cookbook at a glance, but it's something much more unique as it includes family photos, stories and even her own photos of the finished dishes.

Darral Williams is the author of The Last Friend, a taut political thriller about how far an investigator named David Squire will go to help an old, dying friend who found himself victim of a bribery scheme. When the investigation leads to people in high places, Squire finds himself on a wild rollercoaster ride with men who will stop at nothing, even murder,

World Vision To Host World’s Biggest 6K Walk For Water
On Saturday, May 19, 2018, people from around the globe will unite through the world’s biggest 6K for clean water, World Vision’s Global 6K for Water, and walk or run 6 kilometers for an extraordinary cause. “Nearly, 1,000 children die every day because of a lack of clean water and sanitation. The Global 6K for Water is a one-day, worldwide event where thousands will unite to literally save lives through the gift of clean water,” said Ashley Colquitt, the Global 6K for Water Race Director. “Last year, over 28,000 people in countries around the world ran and walked to bring clean water to those in need. This year, we’re hoping even more people join us in our goal to bring life-changing clean water to 50,000 children who desperately need it.”

The distance is significant. 6 kilometers (approximately 3.7 miles, or 15 laps around a track) is the average distance people— usually women and girls— walk to get water for their families and homes in the developing world. Often, the walk is dangerous, children miss school to fulfill this household need, and the water is dirty. When you participate in World Vision’s Global 6K, every step you take is one they won’t have to. Sign-up and participation is easy! You can map a route from your front door and gather your family and friends in your community, or create a virtual team with friends across the country. When you register, World Vision will send you a Global 6K for Water t-shirt, a finisher’s medal, and a race bib with a photo of the

In 1990, 76 percent of the world had access to improved drinking water. Today, that number is nearly 89 percent. Clean water frees children from deadly diseases, liberates women and children from a life spent gathering dirty water, and opens the door to education, a promising future, and a full life. Join them on May 19 as they walk together to increase access to clean water even more. World Vision is the largest nongovernmental (NGO) provider of clean water in the developing world, reaching one new person with clean water every 10 seconds and reaching three more schools every day with clean water. In 2017, World Vision provided access to clean water to 3.2 million people. Register or learn more today by visiting worldvision6k.org. A benefit of the new Girl Scouts extended membership opportunity is that new members can enjoy all of the leadership-building adventure of Girl Scout Camp over the summer and then seamlessly integrate into a troop when school starts in the fall. The extended membership opportunity also allows volunteers who want to start a new Girl Scout troop to beat the fall frenzy and get set up, trained and ready to dive right into exciting activities in the fall, such as attending programs, going camping, starting a robotics team or taking trips. Upcoming Girl Scout C amp opp or tu n it i e s include both resident camp and day camp options. At Girl Scout Camp, girls make new friends, explore new skills and gain appreciation for the outdoors while building confidence and leadership skills.

Special Dishes For Mother's Day Wow, Mother's Day is May 13, this coming Sunday. Remember mom by preparing her favorite foods, unless she's like mine, who liked everything. But if I had her, I'd be preparing Coconut Shrimp. She loved it! I wish she were here. However, if your mom is special like mine was, try some of the wonderful recipes below.
Chicken Breasts In Phyllo Pastry 1 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing 2/3 cup chopped green onions 3½ T. fresh lemon juice 1 small clove garlic, minced 3/4 tsp. dried whole tarragon 8 chicken breast halves, skinned and boned
1/4 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. pepper 16 sheets commercial frozen phyllo pastry, thawed Butter-flavored vegetable cooking spray 3½ T. grated Parmesan cheese
Combine mayonnaise, green onions, lemon juice, garlic, and tarragon in small mixing bowl. Set mayonnaise mixture aside. Sprinkle chicken breasts with salt and pepper. Place one sheet of phyllo pastry on sheet of plastic wrap; spray evenly with cooking spray. Place another sheet of phyllo on top; spray with cooking spray. Spread about 3 T. mayonnaise mixture on both sides of 1 chicken breast; place breast diagonally in one comer of stacked pastry sheets. Fold corner over breast; fold sides over, and carefully roll up in pastry. Place seam side down in ungreased 15"x10"x1" jellyroll pan. By Bob Watt, Jefferson County Treasurer The Jefferson County Sealed Bid Auction happens once a year and usually takes place in the fall or early winter. The properties listed in the auction, are properties that the County has taken ownership of through the annual Real Estate Tax Sale process. If interested in the Sealed Bid Auction, you can come to our office and purchase a listing of all the properties once the book is available (usually about 30 days before the last day to bid). You can usually call our office about August and see if we have a good idea as to when the Sealed Bid Auction will be and when we will start selling the book. Once you have found a property you are interested in bidding on, you should then visit the County Clerk’s office and make sure there are no liens on the property. Once you are sure you want to place a bid, you will fill out a bid sheet, include a check for the amount of your bid, seal the check and bid sheet in an envelope and then bring to our office. If you have the highest bid, your check will be cashed. If you do not win the bid, your check will be returned to you.
and take ownership of the property. “If you have any questions, or would like more information, please contact our office at 618-244-8010. We are here to help in any way we can. This concludes the Property Tax 101 series. If you missed any part along the way, the entire series is available on the Treasurer’s page on the Jefferson County website. Also at this time I wish to express my sincere appreciation to Hillary Keip for her invaluable assistance in making this series possible. She has moved on to a new position, and we wish to extend our best wishes to her in her new endeavor.

To garnish Chocolate-Mint Cheesecake; paint and swirl candy coating on lemon balm mint leaves. The leaves curl gracefully because they are placed on a rounded object to cool. For the chocolate marbled leaves, select 12 to 14 nonpoisonous leaves such as mint, or rose. Wash leaves, and pat dry with paper towels. Place 1 oz. vanilla-flavored candy coating in a 6 oz. custard cup; microwave at medium (50% power)1 to 2 minutes or until coating melts, stirring after 1 minute. Stir a small amount of green paste food coloring into coating. Place custard cup in a shallow pan; pour hot water to a depth of 1/2 into pan, if desired, to prevent coating from hardening quickly. Set aside. Place 1 ounce chocolate-flavored candy coating in a 6 oz. custard cup. Microwave at medium 1 to 2 minutes or until coating melts, stirring after 1 minute; place cup in pan of water, if desired. Using an artist's brush, coat tops of leaves with green coating. Place three small dots of chocolate-flavored coating on leaves; using the tip of a wooden pick, draw lines through dots to create a marbled effect. Place leaves over a banana or other rounded object; let coated leaves stand at room temperature until coating cools and is firm. Reverse colors on remaining mint leaves. Grasp leaf at stem end, and carefully peel leaf away from coating. Cover and store marbled leaves in a cool, dry place until ready to use. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. All prior year taxes are brought to zero amount due. • You will need to check with the Jefferson County Clerk’s office to make sure there are no liens on the property. • Books with a list of all the properties up for auction usually cost about $8 and can be purchased in our office or on the Jefferson County website. • The minimum bid is usually around $673.00 but as fees change, this number can change as well. • It can take up to 90 days to get the deed recorded

EAGLE LIFE

Peter and the Holy Spirit What transformed Peter from a brash, impulsive fisherman, who denied his Lord three times, into a bold apostle full of the power of God? First, Peter was an eyewitness of the resurrection of Christ. Second, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. (Acts 2) Third, God rearranged his life and attitudes by breaking down prejudice in his heart. As you read the book of Acts, you will discover Peter’s relationship and ongoing reliance on the Holy Spirit. Consider these aspects of the person and power of the Holy Spirit that can empower and energize your life. PETER AND THE
POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. The day of Pentecost is viewed by many to be the birthday of the church. In obedience to the Lord, 120 believers waited in an upper room in prayer until God fulfilled his promise to pour out his Spirit. All the believers began to speak in other tongues and Peter preached a message that brought over 3,000 to Christ. Later God rearranged Peter’s heart and sent him to Cornelius’ home and the Gentiles also received Christ and were filled with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 10) Peter preached to the Jewish authorities saying, “We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who God has given to those who obey him.”
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations"? Daniel, Jeremiah, Noah, Thomas 3. From 1 Chronicles 29, how many years did David 1. Is the book of Hebrews reign over Israel? 7, 33, 40, in t he Old or Ne w 57 4. What do the seven Testament or neither? lampstands represent in 2. To whom did God say,
(Acts 5:32) The gift of the Holy Spirit to empower the believer is available to all who will ask and receive. (Acts 1:8; Luke 11:13) PETER AND HIS PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP W I T H T H E HO LY SPIRIT. At a critical time in the life of the early church, Peter was given direction in what to do. We see how the Holy Spirit is a person, of the Godhead, who can be lied to. “Ananias, how is it that Satan so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit . . . You have not lied to human beings but to God.” (Acts 5:3-4) The Holy Spirit is God and can be grieved, resisted, and quenched. The Holy Spirit speaks, teaches and leads. He sanctifies and empowers. We can have
communion and fellowship with him. Partner with the Holy Spirit. PETER AND THE PERFORMANCE OF THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT. It seems that most often the manifestations of the Holy Spirit in Peter’s life were the gifts of healing and miracles. The lame beggar was healed instantly. (Acts 3) “The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people . . . As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on mats . . . so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.” (Acts 5:12-16) Did healing and miracles cease with the death of the apostles? No. Paul urged believers to desire earnestly the gifts of the Spirit. (I Corinthi-
Wednesday, May 9, 2018 ans 12) The Holy Spirit is still working where he is welcomed and obeyed. (Mark 16:17-18) PETER AND THE SPIRIT’S PRESENCE IN PERSECUTION. Peter and the apostles were thrown in jail many times and persecuted for their faith in Christ. They were miraculously released from jail. (Acts 5:17-33, 40-41) Jesus said that those who are persecuted would be blessed. (Matthew 5:10-12) The easy road will not get you there. It is not difficulty that can defeat you, it’s having to face it alone. The Holy Spirit abides with you always. (II Corinthians13:4) PETER AND THE PASSION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL. Scott
Hagan, president of North Central University in Minneapolis, MN said, “Patience is not the enemy of passion.” The apostles were flogged and warned not to teach or preach in the name of Jesus. But the Holy Spirit gave a burning passion to them, “Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.” (Acts 5:4142) Like Peter, make the Holy Spirit your Senior Partner. Let him guide you and empower you. The Holy Spirit will reveal Jesus to you in an everincreasing revelation. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

OPINIONS
Impeach! Impeach! Impeach! That's the open hate talk of the left targeting Donald Trump. Is all this a conspiracy? It makes one wonder as it's been going on since Day One of President Donald Trump's presidency. What I find interesting is when someone tells me he should be impeached and I ask why, the comment I get each and every time is that he's unfit! Of course, my next question is, "In what way is he unfit?" Again, I get nothing other than what is speculation, and of course, what they p erceive as Tr ump's motives. A prime example is the interference in the 2016 election using the Russian Collusion theory. So going back to impeachment just for a minute, let me say a President can't be tried and impeached based on: 1) The other side thinking that he's unfit, just because. 2) What the other side thinks is his motive. 3) Who he fired, no matter what the other side thinks is his motive. All this has been going on, as I said earlier, since he was elected. By who? The far left, the Democratic Establishment — including some in the FBI, CIA, and DOJ — and the
Republican Washington Establishment. I watched Meet the Press last Sunday. I found it interesting the topic was still Stormy Daniels, as Chuck Todd interviewed her attorney, Michael Avenatti. And when Todd asked of the lawsuit, "Why now?" no clear answer was given. Seriously, I don't think she was worried about her reputation. She made that herself.
And so the interview went in circles, encompassing a number of issues, including Mueller, which left me wondering what Mueller had to do with Trump's activities a decade ago. Then, in my opinion, Stormy's attorney laid a bombshell. One of the issues at the bottom of all this garbage coming to the surface is this quote from the attorney, "We need to
decide if he (referring to Trump) is fit to serve as president." All of a sudden Stormy's actions against Trump became crystal clear. The purpose is to impeach! Any good attorney will tell you actions while in office are impeachable, motives are not impeachable. But the fact remains, I'd rather question a lie about Stormy Daniels than listen to lie after lie from the Obama Administration. For one, Susan Rice went on every Sunday morning talk show saying that the attack on the post that killed four Americans including Amb ass ador Stephens was a protest that simply got out of hand! I remember Benghazi. Do you? In my opinion, that was an offense. The motive was to mislead the American people after taking no action to save Americans in harm's way while the people in power sat and watched it in real time, when in fact, there was help close enough to intervene that was ordered to stand down. In my opinion, these actions were impeachable. So with all that said, keep in mind the reason Donald Trump is the President now is because of the prior behavior of the past administration. The real news this week is: • The Iran Deal deadline comes up this week. • A decision has to be made on where the Kim / Trump summit will be held. Both of these are positive

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ve set a fast pace for yourself. But as you approach your goal, you might want to slow down a bit in order to take time to reassess your situation and make changes while you can. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Patience continues to be a virtue for the Divine Bovine. So as eager as you might be to get things moving, remember that time is on your side. Make good use of it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) There’s a wee bit of uncertainty in the early part of the week. But things clear up as more facts come to light. Spend quality time this weekend with family and friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An old friend’s return could open new possibilities for both of you. But don’t let yourself be rushed into anything. There could be some factors you haven’t yet explored. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This week offers a challenge you’re raring to take on. And while eager to get started, do so slowly so that you can focus those sharp Cat’s Eyes on every detail. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Put your skepticism aside and listen to advice from colleagues who’ve been where you are now. What they say could be helpful as you get closer to a decision. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family matter might again require your reassuring touch. Handle
it, as always, with kindness and fairness, even if some of your kin prove to be especially difficult. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your ability to tackle even the most intricate details of a project is likely to impress some very important people. A relative shares news later this week. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The Archer’s aim might be focused on the big picture this week, but don’t overlook checking for those details you might have missed. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might feel awkward asking for assistance, but who would refuse the charming Goat’s request? Do it, then go ahead and enjoy a musical weekend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Pour some cold water on that simmering misunderstanding before it boils over. The sooner things settle, the sooner you can move ahead with your plans. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re in a highly productive period, which you feel can go on forever. But you could be courting exhaustion. Take time out to relax and restore your energies. BORN THIS WEEK: You can combine a sense of adventure with a penchant for practicality. Have you considered a travel-related field? © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
