Mt. Vernon Rotary Hosts High School Honors Banquet The Rotary of Mt. Vernon recently hosted its annual High School Honors Banquet. Over 100 Mt. Vernon Township High School seniors were honored by Rotary for academic, music and service accomplishments. Three students, Nicole Richard, Ella Warner and Jacob Parks, also received the John Howard Scholarship in the amount of $500. This scholarship was established in 2012 to honor students who exemplify the Rotary motto “Service Above Self.” It is named after long time Rotarian, John

Howard. One student, Lauryn Willis, also received the Lumbattis Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Dr. John Lumbattis, a dentist who practiced over 50 years, was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Mt. Vernon in 1920 and is credited with starting the club’s annual Honors Banquet in 1946. After his passing in 1969 this award was established in his honor to recognize a student exemplifying outstanding achievement and leadership.

Cut carrots into 3" julienne sticks. Arrange carrots on a steaming rack, and place over boiling water; cover and steam 8 to 10 minutes. Remove carrots, and plunge into ice water to stop cooking process; drain. Separate carrots into 6 bundles. Place leek strips in boiling water for 1 minute; drain. Carefully tie a leek strip around each carrot bundle, and set aside. Combine lemon juice and remaining ingredients in small Dutch oven; bring to boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 1 minute or until sugar dissolves. Carefully add carrot bundles, and cook over medium heat 3 minutes or until thoroughly heated, spooning lemon mixture over carrots frequently. Yield: 6 servings.

Garden New Potatoes 6 slices bacon, cut into 1/2" pieces 1½ lbs. new potatoes, peeled (about 24 potatoes) 12 pearl onions, peeled 3/4 cup chicken broth

1/2 lb. fresh mushrooms, sliced 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley

Cook bacon in large skillet until crisp; remove bacon, reserving 2 T. drippings in skillet. Add potatoes and onions to bacon drippings; cook over high heat until lightly browned. Drain excess bacon drippings. Add chicken broth. Bring to boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Add mushrooms, and cook, uncovered, over high heat, stirring constantly, until liquid evaporates. Stir in bacon, salt, pepper, and parsley. Yield: 6 servings. Note: Rather than peeling the entire potato, a small ring may be peeled around the center of the potato. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. New York Times, Barack Obama's nuclear deal with Iran included the release of three American prisoners and also a U.S. payment of $1.7 billion. The money paid was because the U.S. froze Iranian assets in 1979. This included $400 million for military hardware that was never delivered to Iran. So we paid $400 million plus interest, for a grand total of $1.7 billion. The New York Times story doesn't explain why the $400 million was a cash payment and whether or not the remaining money was in cash also? Nor did it explain who the cash went to except to say "elected officials." One thing I'll say, it was a very convoluted deal with a lot of questions still remaining. Yet Obama and Clinton have tried to give Trump advice on how to negotiate with Iran, as John Kerry (in my book, a traitor) is advising Iran how to deal with America. Imagine that! Shades of Vietnam! In my opinion, Obama's Iran deal is where it belongs: Dead. But of course, Obama criticized Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran deal. In my opinion, that's because it was one of Obama's few signature deals, one of his foreign policy achievements according to some, as misguided and irresponsible as

It was a major evening of news on Wednesday, May 9, the day three American prisoners were released from North Korea and turned over to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; Trump pulled out of the Iran deal; and Iran fired missiles from Syria at Israel in retaliation for Trump's decision to pull out. So what does CNN focus on all evening? Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen. In timing the seven o'clock hour, Daniels / Cohen got 55 minutes, the Korean prisoners release got 3 minutes, missiles over Israel got 2 minutes. For those of you that keep watching the Clinton News Network (CNN), stop drinking the Kool Aid. My new name for CNN is "Carry No News." Unfortunately, I have to watch everything from CNN to Fox News and everything in between in order to write this column. But I decided to watch CNN all Wednesday evening, because with the major news that was breaking, I had to believe for a change they would at least do some real news. But, needless to say, they didn't. But with that said I'll leave it there. This is a new day for America. In one day, President Donald Trump accomplished more than former President Barack Obama did in eight years. On to the Obama deal with Iran. According to the

it was. However, I have to point out I've never heard a former President question and try to interfere as much as the Obamas have. I call that sore losers, and no they weren't running, but their girl was! Next up, another top story of the week was the five ISIS leaders captured that no network reported on but Fox News. So again, by not listening to Fox as well, you're missing some news. Turning to North Korea, the Kim / Trump Summit is set for June 11 in Singapore. On to three prisoners released from North Korea. There was no money that changed hands, no promises were made. Trump asked for their release, and Kim Jong-un released them in good faith. If Obama would have pushed for their release, possibly four would have been returning instead of an American family burying their son a few days after his release under Obama. Yet while Pompeo was going to get the hostages last Wednesday, the New York Times ran a story with the headline "At a Key Moment, Trump’s Top Diplomat Is Again Thousands of Miles Away." Up next, many don't even know that Iran was firing missiles at Israel last week in retaliation, but

trust, Israel has the capability to protect itself. However, Trump has said Israel's enemies are our enemies. And to that I say, Amen! The bottom line is, this administration has done more in eight days than the last administration did in eight years. Do I think the Trump haters will change? No, they won't, sorry to say. But in spite of that, Trump will succeed and fulfill his promises! I do hope the liberal media goes back to reporting real news. I have to stay optimistic. Until next week.

A special luminaria ceremony held during the Relay For Life of Jefferson County event on Saturday, June 9, 2018 will remember those lost to cancer and honors those who have survived. Luminaria are white paper bags decorated with names and messages to the people they are dedicated to. They honor every life touched by cancer and can be dedicated to loved ones lost, those currently bat-

tling, or anyone who has overcome it. During the Luminaria Ceremony, which is set to start at 8:45 p.m. on June 9, Luminaria will line the inside of the walking track and be illuminated with glow sticks in honor of cancer survivors and those who have lost their lives to cancer. Anyone desiring to purchase a luminaria may do so by contacting any Relay For Life team member or

by calling the Luminaria Chair Brenda Lawson at 618-315-1754. Luminaria bags are available for a donation of $10. All funds raised through these sales support the programs and services of the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life is set for Saturday, June 9 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Veterans Park in Mt. Vernon. Former and current cancer patients, families, businesses, civic organizations, and the

public are invited to take part in this team event to fight cancer. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Taking advice isn’t always easy for selfassured Rams and Ewes who think they know what’s best. But it wouldn’t hurt to listen to what close colleagues have to say. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You know how to balance life’s practical aspects with the poetic. This gives you a special edge this week in both your professional endeavors and your personal life. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Focus on keeping a balance between your home-related activities and your workplace responsibilities. Be mindful of both without obsessing over one or the other. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change in plans is likely as you discover more facts about a possible commitment. Continue to ask questions and, if you’re not sure about the answers, demand proof. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Be careful not to let that Leonine pride keep you from seeking wise, experienced counsel before making an important decision. A family member once again seeks your help. Local 4-H Members Headed To State 4-H C.E. Brehm Memorial Library Events The C.E. Brehm Memorial “Goober Peas,” “Dixie,” and 6 p.m. to help you find Public Speaking Contest Public Library in Mt. more. money the state owes you. On May 2 members of Bond, Clinton, Jefferson, Marion, and Washington County 4-H came together for an area 4-H Public Speaking C ontest at Kaskaskia College. 4-H shows are an opportunity for members to exhibit the projects they have been working on throughout the year. Youth were vying for the opportunity to present their speeches at the State 4-H Public Speaking Contest on June 9 in Decatur. Families were welcomed to the Lifelong Learning Center by Dean of Arts and Sciences Kellie Hanegar, and the speeches were evaluated by Kaskaskia College Speech Professors Brandi Wilkins and David Quinn. Participants chose between four different types of entries. Formal speeches are meant to provide information to the audience. Props are not used in formal speeches. Illustrated speeches also

inform the audience, but use visual aids. Original works could be presented by one to three members and are designed to entertain the audience. Although none of the participants this year selected the oral interpretation category, it is one the options as well. Each of the entries had to be between four and six minutes in length. Judges filled out an evaluation sheet for each entry, and graded them Blue, Red or White based on the Danish rating system. The judges also had the task of selecting State Fair delegates and alternates, who are listed below by county. Bond County: Allison Hemker, Original Work, Blue, State Fair Delegate; Megan Miller, Illustrated Speech, Blue, State Fair Delegate. Clinton County: Maggie Schrage, Formal Speech, Blue, State Fair Delegate; Valerie Tebbe, Formal Speech, Blue, State Fair Delegate.

Jefferson County: Raquel Minor, Formal Speech, Blue, State Fair Delegate. Marion County: Eliza Engelhardt, Illustrated Speech, Blue, State Fair Delegate; Parker Karrick, Formal Speech, Blue, State Fair Delegate. Washington County: Christopher Johns Illustrated Speech, Blue, State Fair Delegate; Abigail Meyer, Illustrated Speech, Blue, State Fair Delegate. This program kicked off the 4-H show season for Bond, Clinton, Jefferson, Marion, and Washington counties. Each county will have individual 4-H shows scheduled through the summer season. The fair season wraps up for 4-H during the Illinois State Fair in August. For more information about local 4-H, contact your local University of Illinois Extension Office or, contact Youth Development Educator Liz Miller at lizmill@illinois.edu.

The State Treasurer is holding 2.9 billion dollars in unclaimed funds for Illinoisans. The State holds these lost funds until they are claimed by either the original owner or their heirs. Property is returned at no cost with the proper identification. Also, every year, thousands of state checks payable to taxpayers go uncashed. This program allows taxpayers to learn whether they can claim an uncashed check worth more than $5, issued within the last ten years. If an uncashed check (also called an escheated warrant) is located, the check replacement process can also be started here. The Comptroller currently has records of more than 100,000 uncashed checks worth over $30 million. The C.E. Brehm Memorial Public Library is located at 101 S. 7th St. in Mt., Vernon, Illinois. cities are cracking down on pet licensing. For example, Sacramento fines owners up to $300 for ignoring notices to license their pets -- a steep increase over the initial cost of the license tags: $20 per year for dogs, $10 for cats. Broward County, Florida, also has a $300 fine in place. Chicago is sending out notices, as registration purchases dropped from 27,000 in 2011 to less than 13,000 in 2017. It offers licenses for 1- or 3-year terms. And Seattle fines unlicensed owners $125, with additional fines possible for offenses like

to buy a license for each of my cats. I get them vaccinated regularly, and they're purely indoor cats, so why should I bother to pay for two license tags? — Kate J., via email DEAR KATE: As I've written before, indoor pets can escape to the outdoors, which is why it's a good idea to vaccinate them on schedule, as you've done. In cities and municipalities that require them, license tags provide additional identification in case your cats do get out. Financially, it's a good idea to go ahead and get the license tags. "failure to display pet license tags" (an additional $54). Cities locate unlicensed pets through vaccination records. It's a bureaucratic necessity, and annoying, but the tags aren't that expensive, while the fines for not doing so can be. Find out how to register and pay for your cats' licenses at your city's website. You may be able to do it all online. Check with your cats' veterinarian as well to see if the vet's office can help you obtain licenses. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

American Kennel Club, fleas leave tiny, red, raised dots on dogs' skins. Flea bites tend to be smaller than bites from other insects, but as dogs scratch flea bites more and more, the bites can become more inflamed. Dogs that have been bitten by fleas may exhibit other symptoms as well. For example, some dogs may bite or chew at their own skin, while others may develop scabs or red irritated skin. Some dogs even begin to lose some of their hair after being bitten by fleas. Dog owners intent on determining the source of their dogs' discontent also can look for the fleas themselves. Though small, t y pi c a l l y m e a s u r i n g between one and three millimeters in length, fleas can be easy to spot, especially on the skin of dogs or on dogs with light-colored hair. Fleas are dark brown or black and tend to infest dogs' necks, ears, lower backs, abdomens, or the base of their tails. Some dogs infested with fleas may appear to have small flecks of pepper on their bodies. The AKC notes that those specks are not pepper, but flea droppings that are actually dried blood, which may be visible on the areas fleas have infested. Dog owners who suspect their dogs have been infested with fleas should take their dogs to their veterinarians immediately, as flea infestations can sometimes contribute to anemia, tapeworm and a skin disease known as flea allergy dermatitis.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Peter’s Mother-in-law When you think about the apostle Peter, perhaps the big, boisterous fisherman comes to mind. What many people don’t realize is that Peter had a wife and mother-in-law, whom Paul said, traveled with him in ministry. Here are some things we can learn from Peter’s life that inspires me. First, be hot or cold. Never be passive. Second, nothing or no one is a finished product. Everything is a work in progress. Third, the quality of your life is determined by how you spend your time and with whom you spend it. Peter’s mother-in-law was a remarkable woman who left a godly

mark for the kingdom of God. She is the only mother-in-law, that I am aware of, recorded in the New Testament. Jesus came to Peter’s house and saw Peter’s motherin-law was in bed, sick with a high fever. Jesus touched her, and the fever left her immediately. She got up and began to serve Him. (Matthew 8:14-17) How can we leave a lasting, godly mark for the kingdom of God? L E AV E AN ETERNAL MARK BY MINISTERING TO JESUS. When Jesus healed Peter’s motherin-law, she immediately got up and served him. Perhaps she served Jesus a meal or a nice cold sweet tea. Mary and Martha discovered that

precious stones? 100, 500, 1,700, 2,200 2. Which book recounts the story of the Israelites wandering in the desert for 40 years? Titus, Hebrews, James, Romans 1. In the Bible's King 3. From 2 Samuel 14, James translation there how many shekels did are more than how many Absalom's hair weigh references to gems and

just being with Jesus and ministering to him in worship and prayer is “the one thing that can’t be taken away.” I John 4:19 says, “We love him because he first loved us.” Everything in our life should flow out of our time with Jesus. Recently, I sent my grandmother’s old Bible to my cousin Gene. He couldn’t get over how marked up it was, and the margins scribbled with notes. Someone said, “If your Bible is well used and falling apart, it probably means you aren’t falling apart. Remember, the quality of your life is determined by how you spend your time and with whom you spend it. LET JESUS HEAL

YOUR FEVER. Jesus touched the hand of Peter’s mother-in-law and the fever left immediately. A fever is an indication of an infection of some sort. What gives you a fever? An infection of bitterness, anger, unforgiveness, and unresolved issues can lay you low. The touch of Jesus on your fevered brow and his cleansing blood can heal like nothing else can. “Forgiving one another . . . even as Christ forgave you.” (Colossians 3:1217, 23-24) Confession is good for the soul and body. (James 5:14-16) LEARN OF JESUS’ HEALING POWER. In Matthew 8 we learn the correlation between faith and Jesus’ healing power. First, Jesus is

willing to heal you. Never doubt his willingness to heal. “Then Jesus . . . touched him saying, ‘I am w i l ling , b e cleansed.’” (Matthew 8:1-4) Second, divine healing is activated by faith. Speaking to the Roman Centurion who beseeched Jesus to heal his suffering servant, Jesus said, “Go, it will be done just as you bel i e ve d.” ( Matt h e w 8:5-13) Third, Jesus cares. When Jesus saw Peter’s sick mother-inlaw, he touched her, and she was healed. Jesus is “touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” (Hebrews 4:14-15) Fourth, healing is in the atonement. The Holy Spirit gives us this revelatory scripture. “When evening had come, they

brought to him many who were demon possessed. And he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah . . . saying: he himself took our infirmities and bore o u r s i c k n e s s e s .” (Matthew 8:16-17; Isaiah 53:5) The stripes laid on Jesus’s back purchased our healing. Like Peter’s motherin-law, leave a lasting, godly mark for the kingdom of God. Minister to Jesus out of your love for him. Let Jesus heal your fever. Learn of faith and Jesus’ healing power. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com
