EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
Peter And The Last Days We can learn much from a study of the life of the apostle Peter. One lesson I’ve learned is you don’t need to know all the answers, you just need to know the one who does — Jesus Christ. I was communicating with someone on messenger and said, “Jesus is coming soon.” She replied, “I hope not.” Many believe that Jesus is coming again as he said he would. But they hope it’s not soon. The apostle Peter was thrown into prison by the Roman emperor Nero and was facing probable execution. He had heard that there were those in the Roman church who were teaching that Jesus
was not coming back and many were living an immoral lifestyle. He wrote his epistle to refute such teaching and warn believers to be ready for the second coming of Christ and the signs of the last days. II Peter 3 instructs us how to live in the light of the second coming of Jesus Christ. LAST DAYS SIGN. “Scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For since the Father’s fell asleep, all things continue as they were.” (II Peter 3:1-4) Today, many scoff at the doctrine of Christ’s soon return. On the Day of Pentecost, Peter announced that we were in the last days. (Acts 2:16-
an from Thyatira opened her home to Paul and saints after her conversion? Rachel, Keturah, Lydia, Shiprah 3. Jesus said, "For where your treasure is, there will be your ... 1. Is the book of Joppa also."? Love, Heart, Faith, in the Old or New Friends Testament or neither? 4. From 2 Samuel 18, 2. What businesswom-
17) We are now over 2,000 years closer to the coming of Jesus. LEARN FROM PAST JUDGEMENTS OF GOD. Peter reminds us that, in the past, God destroyed the earth with a great flood because of the wickedness of mankind. Only Noah and his family were saved in the ark. Now the heavens and earth are reserved for judgement by fire. (II Peter 3:5-7) LONGSUFFERING IS WHY GOD HAS DELAYED CHRIST’S SECOND COMING. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness, but is long suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (II Peter
3
3:8-9) What is his promise? He promised to come back again. (John 14:1-6) Only repentance from sin and faith in Christ can make you ready for the catching away of the church on that day. We see God’s mercy. LETHAL JUDGEMENT IS COMING, on the inhabitants of the earth who refuse to repent. (II Peter 3:10-12) It will be a terrible time. The book of Revelation describes it. (Revelation 19:11-14; 20:12-14) Jesus promises salvation and escape for believers who live faithful to Christ. (Luke 21:36) Paul refers to this promise of salvation. (Romans 13:11; I Thessalonians 5:9) LIVING READY. The theme of Peter’s second
epistle is that believers must live ready to meet Christ for he is coming as a “thief in the night,” taking most by surprise. “Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be holy conduct and godliness.” (II Peter 3:11) LO OK FOR HIS COMING. Peter urges believers to look for the coming of Christ. (II Peter 3:12-14) Jesus told us that when we see the signs of his coming being fulfilled, to look up, “your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:27-28) We are to eagerly wait for the Savior. (Philippians 3:20-21) There is a similar verse in Hebrews 9:28, “To those who eagerly wait for him he will appear a second
time, apart from sin, for salvation.” LOVE THE LORD AND HIS WORD. By the cleansing and nurturing of his Word we are made holy and ready at his coming. (II Peter 3:14-18) Paul describes how Christ prepares his bride for that day, “By the washing of the water by the word.” (Ephesians 5:25-27) I see the hand of Jesus pouring out pure water on the church. Raise your arms and ask him to wash you with the pure water of his Word. Are you ready and looking for the coming Day of the Lord? Maranatha — “Even so, come Lord Jesus.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Lutheran Child And Family Services Announces Mt. Vernon Office Relocation Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois, one of the largest nonprofit child welfare agencies in Illinois, recently moved to a new office space at 618 South 42nd Street in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The agency previously resided at 800 South 45th Street in Mt. Vernon. The new office will allow LCFS to better serve the needs of its clients within the community. “As a nonprofit organization, it was important to find a location that helps our staff thrive as they serve our clients, while ensuring that donor resources are used appropriately,” said Mike Bertrand, LCFS’ President and CEO. “We’re confident that we’ve found that balance with our new
space and look forward to continuing to serve children and families in the Mt. Vernon and surrounding communities for years to come.” Out of its Mt. Vernon location, LCFS provides a variety of programs, including foster care, counseling and intact family services. In addition, LCFS also provides services within the area through Southern Thirty Adolescent Center (a 30-day shortterm emergency-shelter care facility in Mt. Vernon) and Camp Wartburg (a retreat center and summer camp facility in Waterloo). “LCFS has been serving the Mt. Vernon community for nearly 40 years, and we are excited to have the
opportunity to continue to provide high-quality care and services to children and families in need,” shared Mar y Rachael Stevens-Evans, LCFS Southern Regional Director. Last year, LCFS cared for more than 500 foster children through its Southern Illinois offices. They ensured the children were safe and cared for in loving foster homes. At the same time, they worked closely with the birth families supporting them in getting their lives together, so they could be reunited with their children. Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois is a leading provider of a variety of child welfare ser-
vices. They serve children, individuals, families and communities of all faiths, races, orientations and ethnic backgrounds. LCFS improves the well-being of people across the state by prote c t i ng ch i l d re n , strengthening families and building futures for those who have experienced trauma. For more information on LCFS, visit www. LCFS.org or call (800) 363LCFS. LCFS’ contact numbers have remained the same. The ne w address is Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois, 618 S. 42nd St., Mt. Vernon, IL 62864. Their main phone number is 618-242-3284 and their fax number is 618-242-3288.

SENIOR CITIZENS DAY! Every Wednesday! Save 10%.
Some additional reminders about wildlife in Illinois: • Birds often leave the nest before they can fly. These birds, known as fledglings, will live on the ground for a few days while they grow flight feathers, and you may hear them making noises calling for their parents. They do this so their parents will continue to feed them, and it doesn’t mean they are in trouble. Keep children and pets away. • Do not attempt to rescue fawns. Fawns stay very still to conceal themselves until they are old enough to keep up with their mother. The mother will not stand near the fawns for fear of alerting predators to their presence. Leave fawns alone and the mother will return once you leave the area. • It is illegal to feed wild deer. When deer congregate, it can facilitate the spread of disease and cause other unintended consequences. • Wild birds and animals can become habituated to people when they are provided food. Do not leave pet food outside at night, clean up under bird feeders, secure the lids on garbage cans to keep raccoons and other wildlife out, and don’t feed Canada geese in urban/suburban areas. Nuisance animals can become dangerous to people. • Handling wild animals can result in the handler being bitten. According to the Centers for Disease Control, wild animals that bite a person must be euthanized immediately to be tested for rabies. The IDNR urges everyone to enjoy wildlife by observing, but not interfering, and by leaving wildlife in the wild.

CATHY IS OFF AND RUNNING So this week's column is being written by our friend Rich Lowry, editor of the National Review.
Our prayers are with all those that lost friends and loved ones in the school shooting last Friday morning at Santa Fe High School in Texas.
Donald Trump's Jerusalem Triumph In the second century A.D., Jewish rebels who had stunned the Romans and liberated a portion of Judea overstruck imperial coins with images and a message of their own, "Year One of the Redemption of Jerusalem." The leader of the Jewish rebellion, Bar Kokhba, was fired by a vision of a united Israel with Jerusalem as its capital, which had been the exception during the prior millennium, thanks to the d e pre d at i ons of t he Assyrians and Babylonians, among others. But such was the power of the national idea — and his messianic zeal — that Bar Kokhba ventured all on regaining it. And lost. Not for nearly another 2,000 years would the vision come to fruition. At a ceremony in 1982 burying bones of some of those long-ago rebels with military honors, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin declared: "Israel and Judea are reborn. We have redeemed Jerusalem."
King David conquered the city in 1000 B.C. and made it the capital of the kingdom of Israel. His son Solomon built the First Temple. But Jerusalem would repeatedly be captured and the Temple destroyed (first by the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar and then by the Roman Emperor Titus). The Jewish people never forgot. In one of the miracles of our age, after long centuries of exile punctuated by genocide at the hands of the Nazis, they re-established Israel in 1948, and then gained control of all of Jerusalem in 1967 (prior to that, when Jordan held East Jerusalem, Jews couldn't visit the Western Wall). The notion that the City of David isn't the capital of Israel was an impolite fiction, honored by the U.S. and the West for fear of provoking Arabs hostile to the very idea of the Jewish state. Its prime minister, parliament and highest court are based there, and it's unimaginable that Israel would ever agree to any peace deal that didn't recognize it as the capital. The tired, conventional arguments against it haven't held up well in the wake of President Donald Trump's decision to move our embassy. The Arab street
hasn't exploded. The West Bank has been relatively quiet. Arab capitals haven't erupted in outrage. The flashpoint has been in Gaza, the terror statelet ruled by Hamas. Israel pulled out of Gaza more than a decade ago and has been rewarded with constant attacks emanating from a territory where the infrastructure of mayhem and destruction — rockets, tunnels and the like — is the only growth industry. Hamas has goaded rioters to storm the Israeli border, defended by Israeli soldiers who fire on them if necessary to protect local communities (more than 50 were killed on a recent Monday). This isn't "the caravan" that arrived at the U.S. border with peaceful migrants seeking asylum, but a violent provocation that is a function of Hamas' commitment to Israel's destruction. For now, that poisonous ambition looks more fantastical than ever. Trump's move is an acknowledgment of reality. It is also a symbolic statement of permanence, that Menachem Begin was correct when he said at the ceremony for the Bar Kokhba rebels 36 years ago, "Glorious fathers, we are back and we will not budge from here."
Every child has to learn the alphabet before learning to read, so some toys for those under 5 years old have been "teaching toys." Blocks were the first. The oldest mention of alphabet blocks was in 1693 in England. But blocks with letters and pictures were not available for most families until 1820 when large numbers of sets were made in a factory. Well-todo young girls educated in the 18th century learned the alphabet while sewing samplers. They had to be able to stitch identification on all the family linens when they married. Most toys were made to teach religion, like a carved wooden Noah's ark, or to teach a skill like cooking using a toy stove, pots and pans. Toy makers created a few teaching toys, cards with letters and cloth alphabet books. A rare, famous teaching toy is the "Alphabet Man" or "Yankee Schoolmaster." The 10-inch-tall iron figure of a man had an arm that moved when a lever was

I would like to know if it's worth anything or if anyone would want it. A: Yes, there is interest in old wedding dresses and gowns. property values within the district, and the property taxes paid; then locking in that baseline for the duration of the TIF district which has a maximum of 23 years (TIFs can be extended, but that’s a topic for another day). City planners will typically work closely with local assessors to establish baseline property values, and evaluate the effect proposed projects will have on the Equalized Assessed Valuation (EAV) of the properties involved. As EAV within the district increases, the incremental increase in property tax is diverted into a special TIF fund which is then used to finance improvements to
the properties, and infrastructure within the District. As the years go by, and the TIF district’s properties increase in value, the property taxes assessed on the properties within the district likewise increase generating more, and more revenue for further development within the TIF district. The goal in the end is to develop the TIF district into a powerful economic, and property tax generator that will benefit the entire community much more than would have occurred if the district had remained unimproved. Next time: How do TIF Districts work?
Week 1: What are TIF Districts? By Bob Watt, Jefferson County Treasurer TIF (Tax Increment Financing) districts are contiguous sections of a city that have been identified by City Government as being in need of development, or redevelopment. A city may have multiple TIF districts at any given time. Identifying an area as a TIF district enables the City to capture and direct funds toward the improvement of properties within the district. The key principle involved is the “improvement or development” of proper-
ties within the district that actually serve to increase the property’s value – not just routine maintenance projects, re-roofing, painting, etc., that only serve to maintain current property values. The purpose of the district is to significantly increase property values within the district, and in return generate increased property tax revenue. It is all about the future! Once a TIF district has been defined the next step is establishing a baseline of

HOW TO HONOR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN Men and women serving in the military make considerable sacrifices in defense of the United States and its citizens. Such sacrifices can easily be taken for granted by those with no friends or family members serving in the military, but it's important for all Americans to recognize the efforts of both active and veteran servicemen and women. One way grateful men and women can show their appreciation to is to help a neighbor who's on active duty. Active duty service members can be away from their families for long periods of time, and their absence can make things difficult for their families. Spouses of deployed service members are typically left to manage a household on their own for months at a time. Neighbors can show their appreciation by helping with some chores around the house. Offer to mow a neighbor's lawn or
drive a neighbor's kids to school. Such gestures might seem small, but they can go a long way toward alleviating

Memorial Day Picnic Southerners always leap at the opportunity to have a picnic, and Memorial Day is no exception to that rule. People plan family get togethers all summer long, but it starts with Memorial Day, followed by family reunions, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Our traditional Memorial Day picnic consists of deviled eggs, fried chicken, potato salad, okra pickles and lemon angel food cake. And, of course, don't forget the lemonade!

MEMORIAL DAY 2018
There are not enough words to thank the men and women who are serving and have served in the armed forces. We cannot express how much gratitude we give for the suffering and sorrow of those who lost their loved ones. Those brave men and women gave the most precious gift God gave us, “life.” The brave men and women served in our armed forces without question, complaint or regard to their own issues, every day to give us our rights and freedoms. As time passes, we hope everyone will remember those who are still standing and remember our fallen to honor and pay tribute to all who served in the armed forces. May God Bless Every One of You.
