Centralia High School Art Show 2018
Centralia High School students participated in their annual Art Show the weekend of May 12-13. Hundreds of pieces were on display to show the progress that was made by the students during
the 2017-2018 school year. Students showcased art in various types of media such as pencil, charcoal, pastel, acrylic and oil paint. Digital paintings took a more prominent role in the show this year with the addition of high level technology in the art room. Art students at CHS now have the opportunity to work with the same technology as any professional artist. Some CHS art students will be participating in the High School Competition at Art on the Square in Belleville this year. Art of the Square was the number one art fair in the nation in 2017. The show in downtown Belleville is the weekend of May 18–20. Last year CHS participants won eight individual awards and hundreds of dollars while competing against other local high school students. Student artists with artwork in the show included Angelica Groh, Kallie Dodd, Heather Keltner, Justice Hynes, Destiny Panega. To see photos of their artwork visit www.theshoppersweekly.com.

tant reminders of our past and provide to us a sense of who we are. More importantly, cemeteries represent a physical legacy for future generations and they must be preserved as a historical resource. In all aspects of cemetery training it is important to be aware of what techniques to use and what techniques
to avoid. She will discuss commonly-used but inappropriate and damaging techniques including setting stones in concrete, repairing broken markers with concrete instead of correct adhesive, and using adhesives, cleaning solutions and techniques that will further damage the marker. This lecture also
shows the correct way to lift, clean, repair and reset grave markers to ensure their continued preservation for future generations. After the presentation there will be a Question / Answer session with Ms. Cobb for anyone attending. The Public is invited to attend.

STION E U Q OF THE
Donald Trump's Jerusalem Triumph In the second century A.D., Jewish rebels who had stunned the Romans and liberated a portion of Judea overstruck imperial coins with images and a message of their own, "Year One of the Redemption of Jerusalem." The leader of the Jewish
rebellion, Bar Kokhba, was fired by a vision of a united Israel with Jerusalem as its capital, which had been the exception during the prior millennium, thanks to the depredations of the Assyrians and Babylonians, among others. But such was the power of the national idea — and his messianic zeal — that Bar Kokhba ventured all on regaining it. And lost. Not for nearly another 2,000 years would the vision come to fruition. At a ceremony in 1982 burying bones of some of those long-ago rebels with military honors, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin
declared: "Israel and Judea are reborn. We have redeemed Jerusalem." King David conquered the city in 1000 B.C. and made it the capital of the kingdom of Israel. His son Solomon built the First Temple. But Jerusalem would repeatedly be captured and the Temple destroyed (first by the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar and then by the Roman Emperor Titus). The Jewish people never forgot. In one of the miracles of our age, after long centuries of exile punctuated by genocide at the hands of the Nazis, they re-established
Israel in 1948, and then gained control of all of Jerusalem in 1967 (prior to that, when Jordan held East Jerusalem, Jews couldn't visit the Western Wall). The notion that the City of David isn't the capital of Israel was an impolite fiction, honored by the U.S. and the West for fear of provoking Arabs hostile to the very idea of the Jewish state. Its prime minister, parliament and highest court are based there, and it's unimaginable that Israel would ever agree to any peace deal that didn't recognize it as the capital. The tired, conventional arguments against it haven't held up well in the wake of President Donald Trump's decision to move our embassy. The Arab street hasn't exploded. The West Bank has been relatively quiet. Arab capitals haven't erupted in outrage. The flashpoint has been in Gaza, the terror statelet ruled by Hamas. Israel pulled out of Gaza more than a decade ago and has been rewarded with constant attacks emanating from a territory where the infrastructure of mayhem and destruction — rockets, tunnels and the like — is the only growth industry. Hamas has goaded rioters to storm the Israeli border, defended by Israeli soldiers who fire on them if necessary to protect local communities (more than 50 were killed on a recent Monday). This isn't "the caravan" that arrived at the U.S. border with peaceful migrants seeking asylum, but a violent provocation that is a function of Hamas' commitment to Israel's destruction. For now, that poisonous ambition looks more fantastical than ever. Trump's move is an acknowledgment of reality. It is also a symbolic statement of permanence, that Menachem Begin was correct when he said at the ceremony for the Bar Kokhba rebels 36 years ago, "Glorious fathers, we are back and we will not budge from here." © 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Jason Plummer Supports Bill To Increase Punishment for Corrupt Politicians
Springfield lawmakers are now considering a bill, House Bill 5878, that would significantly increase penalties for politicians who abuse their power for financial gain. This anti-corruption measure is supported by Governor Bruce Rauner and was formally introduced by Representative Grant Wehrli. Jason Plummer, who is currently running for as the Republican for State Senate in the 54th district, says he supports the bill. “One of the reasons that
people and businesses are afraid to come to Illinois is the fact our state has one of the worst reputations for public corruption in the country,” Plummer said. “This specific bill does two things: it demonstrates to the public that Illinois is serious about punishing criminal politicians and it promotes a political culture where the consequences of violating the public trust are real and severe. I applaud Governor Rauner and Rep. Wehrli for bringing this issue
to the forefront.” Public corruption is a big problem for Illinoisans, costing the state an estimated $16.7 billion between 1997 and 2008 and the federal Northern District of Illinois had the most public corruption convictions of any district in the country between 1976 and 2010[1]. Plummer is campaigning for political reform across the board. “Every political system has bad actors, but Illinois has a political system that creates bad actors. This
problem is closely related to the fact that we don’t have term limits and we allow career politicians to draw gerrymandered political districts. I want voters to know that I will be a strong, independent voice for political reform and for punishing those who abuse their power and harm the state’s already battered reputation.” https://www.illinoispolicy.org/ state-of-the-state-10-facts-you-needto-know-about-transparency-in-astate-famous-for-corruption/ [1]

REMEMBER SACRIFICE ON MEMORIAL DAY
More than 100 years ago in 1863, America was in the midst of the most painful time in our history — the Civil War. On the site of the bloody battle, on the outskirts of Columbus, Mississippi, a group of women walked among the fresh graves. They carried wildflowers to lay on the graves of their Confederate sol-
diers who were buried there. As they moved from one grave to another, they noticed another group of graves off to one side. They were clearly the graves of Union soldiers who had died on the same field of battle. With little discussion, they began to lay their flowers on those graves as
well. The healing of a nation began at that point. The compassion of these Southern ladies for those who died fighting against their husbands, fathers and sons gave a clear message that, in death, all are equal. This small gesture was passed by word of mouth. Union and Confederate soldiers
alike were touched by this simple act of honor. A Union veterans organization, called the Grand Army of the Republic, decided to designate a special day to honor the fallen from both sides. The following order was issued: “The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land. Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race of chains and their deaths a tattoo (drumbeat) of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance.” New York was the first state to set aside this day for specific remembrance of those fallen in battle. In

1873, they passed a law designating May 30 as Decoration Day. In 1882, the holiday was adopted across the United States and renamed “Memorial Day.” In 1973, Memorial Day was officially established as the last Monday in May. On Memorial Day, the sky will likely be clear and most of us will have the day off to enjoy a long weekend. All of us, even the veterans, will have a tendency to enjoy the day without a thought to those who should be remembered. These are the ones who never married their sweet-
World War II veterans are truly a dying breed. According to the Veterans Administration, approximately 492 World War II veterans die every day. Unfortunately, with these men and women die the stories and accounts that have never been written down, captured on film or told to grandchildren. As a result, World War II and the “greatest generation” that lived it, will soon seem as distant to today's young people as the Civil War is to my generation. But to those lives it has touched, directly or indirectly through loved ones, it will remain as large as life. My grandfather, Jerry Pinkowski, (1915-1993) was 26 years old when America entered World War II. He was considered 'unfit for service' due to a childhood injury to his arm that healed incorrectly. But with the Army’s need for personnel being what it was at the time, they accepted him along with many other “limited” service men. He served as a mechanic in the 347th
Ordnance Depot Company which was eventually attached to General George S. Patton’s famous Third Army. Although Grandpa got the “express tour” of Europe while chasing after Patton’s racing armored columns, he still found time to take photographs. Lots of them! Unfortunately, it was only through these photos that I was able to learn much of the details of my Grandpa’s service during the war. Like many World War II veterans he was pretty closed-lipped about his experiences in the war, and my family really wasn’t aware of the treasure trove of photograph negatives he had stashed away until after he lost his battle with cancer in 1993. I regretted not finding out more about the places he'd been, the things he'd seen, and the people he knew. I had missed the golden opportunity to hear my grandpa’s first-hand accounts, but the one thousand photographs that he left behind told a story all their own. O ve r t h e ye ar s I have enjoyed studying his

WORLD WAR II VETERANS: DWINDLING IN NUMBER, BUT NOT IN OUR HEARTS photograph collection. Casually at first, then later becoming more and more serious about unravelling the mysteries contained on the celluloid. The photos’ subjects are varied and range from ordinary everyday scenes of him and his comrades working, to 13th century gothic cathedrals surrounded by crumbling ruins. In 2000 I published some of them on a website called Lost Images Of World War II, inviting visitors to offer their identifications and observations about the photos. That project springboarded me into more extensive research where I’ve been able to retrace Grandpa’s tracks across Europe, and also talk with the very few surviving members of his unit that I could find. In August of 2011, I launched a new, more detailed website which features several hundreds of Grandpa's photos along with summaries, analyses and modern day photo comparisons. The new website can be seen at www.lostimagesofww2. com I urge all World War II veterans to write your memoirs. Tell your stories. Show your old photos to your family while you can still tell the stories behind them. Shining through in those stories will be the values and traditions of a time when sacrifice was commonplace, valor was allin-a-day's-work and truck drivers, college students, farm boys, and carpet store owners were heroes. Through loved ones, the struggles of our Nation during the war have touched my life, and I know that my grandfather played an important part. I understand the
heart, never saw their children play, never went back to school or pursued their dream career. For them and the families they left behind, we must pause during our picnics and gatherings. We must pause, if only for a moment, to remember their sacrifices. If they could speak they would likely say, “Make the most of your freedom and privileges. We purchased them with our lives.” I guess we owe them at least that much. I am sure they would ask for no more.
sacrifices that my grandfather made, and the ones he was willing to make during a time when hundreds of thousands made the ultimate sacrifice. This selfless attitude is characteristic of American veterans—past and present. We must never forget those who went before us and made life in America as it is today possible.

The event is hosted annually by the Sutherland family of SutherlandGarnier Funeral Home and American Legion Post 446. During last year's service, Mike Sutherland mentioned the astonishing fact that approximately 20 veterans commit suicide each day, as Judy Sutherland passed out 20 white balloons to audience volunteers to hold. At the conclusion of the Memorial Day Service the 20 white balloons were released into the air. This year's Memorial Day Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 28 at Hillcrest Memorial Park. In case of rain, it will be held at 11:00 a.m at the American Legion.

How To Honor Servicemen And Women Men and women serving in the military make considerable sacrifices in defense of the United States and its citizens. Such sacrifices can easily be taken for granted by those with no friends or family members serving in the military, but it's important for all Americans to recognize the efforts of both active and veteran servicemen and women. Honoring active military members and veterans does not have to be an elaborate undertaking. Service members and their families often cherish even the simplest of gestures, and the following are a handful of ways grateful men and women can show their appreciation to active and retired members of the military. • Help a neighbor who's on active duty. Active duty service members can be away from their families for

long periods of time, and their absence can make things difficult for their families. Spouses of deployed service members are typically left to manage a household on their own for months at a time. Neighbors can show their appreciation by helping with some chores around the house. Offer to mow a neighbor's lawn or drive a neighbor's kids to school. Such gestures might seem small, but they can go a long way toward alleviating some of the stress that spouses of deployed service members deal with on a daily basis. • Support the Wounded Warrior Project. Many service members sustain physical injuries while deployed. The Wounded Warrior Project works to raise awareness and enlist the public's help to address the needs of injured service members. Men and women
who want to show their appreciation to injured service members can work with the Wounded Warrior Project by volunteering at project-sponsored events or hosting fundraising events such as golf tournaments or community picnics. More information about working with the Wounded Warrior Project is available at www.woundedwarriorproject.org. • Write a letter of appreciation. One of the simplest ways to show your support for service members is to write them a letter expressing that appreciation. If a friends, relatives or neighbors are active service members or veterans, sit down and write a letter telling them how much you appreciate their sacrifice in service of their country, and encourage youngsters to do

The History Of Memorial Day Though many people are quick to refer to Memorial Day as the unoff icial b eginning of summer, the day is much more than that. Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those military members who died in service of the country. The origins of Memorial Day remain a topic of debate. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y. as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. However, the roots of Memorial Day likely run much deeper, as researchers at Duke University note that during the Civil War, organized women's groups in the south had begun to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Memorial Day as we know it today can likely be traced to Charleston, S.C., where teachers, missionaries and some members of the press
gathered on May 1, 1865 to honor fallen soldiers. During the Civil War, captured Union soldiers were held at the Charleston Race Course and hundreds died during captivity. Upon their deaths, soldiers were buried in unmarked graves. When the Civil War ended, the May Day gathering was organized as a memorial to all the men who had died during captivity. The burial ground was landscaped, and those freed as a result of the Civil War played an integral role in the event at the Charleston Race Course. While the event in Charleston might have been the first Memorial Day-type celebration in the southern United States, General John A. Logan is often cited as inspiring similar events in the north. As commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans' organization for
men who served in the Civil War, General Logan issued a proclamation just five days after the Charleston event that called for Decoration Day to be observed annually across the country. Logan preferred the event not be held on the anniversary of any particular battle, and thus the day was observed for the first time on May 30. Celebrating the day in May also was significant to event organizers because May is a month when flowers are in bloom, making it easier for observers of the holiday to place flowers on the graves of fallen
soldiers. In 1868, events were held at more than 180 cemeteries in 27 states, and those figures nearly doubled in 1869. By 1890, every northern state officially recognized Decoration Day as a state holiday. But southern states honored their dead on a different day until after World War I, when the holiday was changed to recognize Americans who died in any war and not just the Civil War. Nearly every state now celebrates Memorial Day, a name for the holiday first used in 1882, on the last Monday in May.

Peter And The Last Days
since the Father’s fell asleep, all things continue as they were.” (II Peter 3:1-4) Today, many scoff at the doctrine of Christ’s soon return. On the Day of Pentecost, Peter announced that we were in the last days. (Acts 2:16-17) We are now over 2,000 years closer to the coming of Jesus. LEARN FROM PAST JUDGEMENTS OF GOD. Peter reminds us that, in the past, God destroyed the earth with a great flood because of the wickedness of mankind. Only Noah and his family were saved in the ark. Now the heavens and earth are reserved for judgement by fire. (II Peter 3:5-7) LONGSUFFERING IS WHY GOD HAS DELAYED CHRIST’S SECOND COMING. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness, but is long suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (II Peter 3:8-9) What is his promise? He promised to come back again. (John 14:1-6) Only repentance from sin and faith in Christ can make you ready for the catching away of the church on that day. We see God’s mercy.
We can learn much from a study of the life of the apostle Peter. One lesson I’ve learned is you don’t need to know all the answers, you just need to know the one who does — Jesus Christ. I was communicating with someone on messenger and said, “Jesus is coming soon.” She replied, “I hope not.” Many believe that Jesus is coming again as he said he would. But they hope it’s not soon. The apostle Peter was thrown into prison by the Roman emperor Nero and was facing probable execution. He had heard that there were those in the Roman church who were teaching that Jesus was not coming back and many were living an immoral lifestyle. He wrote his epistle to refute such teaching and warn believers to be ready for the second coming of Christ and the signs of the last days. II Peter 3 instructs us how to live in the light of the second coming of Jesus Christ. LAST DAYS SIGN. “Scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For
LETHAL JUDGEMENT IS COMING, on the inhabitants of the earth who refuse to repent. (II Peter 3:10-12) It will be a terrible time. The book of Revelation describes it. (Revelation 19:11-14; 20:12-14) Jesus promises salvation and escape for believers who live faithful to Christ. (Luke 21:36) Paul refers to this promise of salvation. (Romans 13:11; I Thessalonians 5:9) LIVING READY. The theme of Peter’s second
epistle is that believers must live ready to meet Christ for he is coming as a “thief in the night,” taking most by surprise. “Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be holy conduct and godliness.” (II Peter 3:11) LOOK FOR HIS COMING. Peter urges believers to look for the coming of Christ. (II Peter 3:12-14) Jesus told us that when we see the signs of his coming being fulfilled, to
9 look up, “your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:27-28) We are to eagerly wait for the Savior. (Philippians 3:20-21) There is a similar verse in Hebrews 9:28, “To those who eagerly wait for him he will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” LOVE THE LORD AND HIS WORD. By the cleansing and nurturing of his Word we are made holy and ready at his coming. (II Peter 3:14-18) Paul describes how Christ prepares
his bride for that day, “By the washing of the water by the word.” (Ephesians 5:2527) I see the hand of Jesus pouring out pure water on the church. Raise your arms and ask him to wash you with the pure water of his Word. Are you ready and looking for the coming Day of the Lord? Maranatha — “Even so, come Lord Jesus.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Memorial Day Picnic
Southerners always leap at the opportunity to have a picnic, and Memorial Day is no exception to that rule. People plan family get togethers all summer long, but it starts with Memorial Day, followed by family reunions, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Our traditional Memorial Day picnic consists of deviled eggs, fried chicken, potato salad, okra pickles and lemon angel food cake. And, of course, don't forget the lemonade!
Deviled Eggs 6 hard-cooked eggs 1/4 cup mayonnaise 2 T. chopped sweet pickles 1 T. chopped green olives 1 tsp. cider vinegar
1 tsp. prepared mustard 1/4 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. black pepper Paprika
Slice eggs in half lengthwise, and carefully remove yolks. Mash yolks with mayonnaise in a bowl. Add remaining ingredients except paprika and stir well. Spoon yolk mixture into egg whites. Sprinkle stuffed eggs with paprika. Yield: 6 servings.
Fried Chicken 1¼ cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. black pepper
1 cup buttermilk 1 (2½ to 3 lb.) broiler fryer, cut up Vegetable oil for frying
Combine flour, salt, and pepper in a large bowl, stirring well. Pour buttermilk into a deep bowl; dip each piece of chicken in buttermilk and dredge in flour mixture, coating well. Heat 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large cast-iron or electric skillet to 350°F. Place chicken in hot oil and cook until browned, turning to brown both sides. Reduce heat until temperature of oil is lowered to 275°, cover chicken and cook 20 minutes. Uncover and cook an additional 5 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Yield: 4 servings.
Potato Salad 8 large red potatoes, peeled and cubed 2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped 1/2 cup chopped celery 1/3 cup sweet pickle relish 1/4 cup chopped green onions 1 (2 oz.) jar diced pimiento, drained
1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tsp. prepared mustard 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper
Cook potatoes in boiling salted water to cover for 20 minutes, or until tender. Drain and cool slightly. Combine potatoes, eggs, celery, pickle relish, onions, and pimiento in a large bowl, tossing gently. Combine mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard, salt, and pepper, stirring well; add to vegetable mixture, tossing gently. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.
Okra Pickles 3½ lbs. small okra pods 14 cloves garlic 7 small fresh red or green chili peppers 1 quart water
1 pint white vinegar (5% acidity) 1/3 cup pickling salt 1 T. dill seeds
Wash okra thoroughly. Pack okra tightly into 7 hot sterilized pint jars; place 2 garlic cloves and a hot pepper in each jar. Combine 1 quart water, the vinegar, pickling salt, and dill seeds in a saucepan; bring to a boil. Pour boiling vinegar mixture over okra, leaving 1/2" headspace. Remove air bubbles; wipe jar rims. Cover at once with metal lids and screw on bands. Process in boiling-water bath for 10 minutes. Yield: 7 pints.
Lemon Angel Food Cake 12 egg whites 1¼ tsp. cream of tartar Pinch of salt 1½ cups sugar
A Special Thank You.
A Time to Honor America’s Heroes
1 cup sifted cake flour 1 tsp. lemon extract 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350° F. Beat egg whites with an electric mixer on high speed until foamy. Add cream of tartar and salt; beat until soft peaks form. Add sugar, 2 T. at a time, beating until stiff peaks form. Sprinkle flour over egg-white mixture, 1/4 cup at a time, folding in carefully each time. Fold in flavorings. Pour batter into an ungreased 10" tube pan, spreading evenly. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Remove cake from oven and immediately invert pan; let cool at least 1 hour. Remove cake from pan. Yield: one 10" cake. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. MEMORIAL DAY 2018
There are not enough words to thank the men and women who are serving and have served in the armed forces. We cannot express how much gratitude we give for the suffering and sorrow of those who lost their loved ones. Those brave men and women gave the most precious gift God gave us, “life.” The brave men and women served in our armed forces without question, complaint or regard to their own issues, every day to give us our rights and freedoms. As time passes, we hope everyone will remember those who are still standing and remember our fallen to honor and pay tribute to all who served in the armed forces. May God Bless Every One of You.
