High-Paying Professions

M

uch of the talk centered on women in the workforce concerns the disparity between earnings when compared against men in the same positions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the earnings difference between women and men varies with age, with younger women in the country more closely approaching pay equity than older women. Still, Pew Research Center says the female median annual earnings is around 83 percent of what men earn in the United States. The gender pay gap exists to some extent in every country in the world. Statistics Canada points out that women

between the ages of 25 and 54 earned 87 cents an hour for every dollar made by men in 2015. Business Insider UK says Iceland, Finland and Norway boast relatively small pay gaps between the genders. Even though a gender wage gap may exist, women can still pursue careers that are known to be well-paying. The following are some of the top-earning positions women (and men) can consider, courtesy of Forbes, Monster.com and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. • Obstetrician/ Gynecologist: Many women feel more comfortable being examined or discussing

female issues with female doctors. This may account for the higher percentage of female OB/ GYNs in practice. The job can be very rewarding because it enables one to care for women at various stages in life. The median annual salary for OB/GYNs is $207,000. • Chief executive: It’s a large responsibility overseeing an entire company or division, but that’s what chief executives do on a daily basis. Approximate median annual earnings are $97,552. • Pharmacist: Pharmacists manage the distribution of medications, but they also consult patients on medication use

Female World Leaders

M

any nations feature females in top political positions. While Hillary Clinton came very close to being elected as the first female president of the United States, leading the presidential ticket for a major political party and even winning the popular vote, the United States is behind many

other nations where that barrier has already broken down. A total of twelve women have served as the first minister of a Canadian government, and one has held the role of prime minister of the country. Kim Campbell of Port Alberni, British Columbia, became the first and only woman to

serve as prime minister of Canada in 1993. However, her tenure was very brief. Even though fewer than 10 percent of the United Nations member states have female leaders, many prominent female political figures have helped to shape world events that have affected

The median annual salary for pharmacists is $95,628. • Optometrist: Responsible for the examination and care of their patients’ eyes, optometrists also determine prescriptions for glasses and contacts. Optometrists earn a median annual salary of $102,000. • Attorney: Lawyers are consumers’ advocate and help explain the often confusing nuances of the law. Attorneys may specialize in different areas, such as corporate law or family the course of history. Prime Minister Golda Meir of Israel, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India, President Corazon Aquino of the Philippines, and President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia are some of the most wellknown female world leaders. But there are many others as well. • Angela Merkel: No list would be complete without Merkel, who has held the office of German Chancellor since 2005. Merkel has helped lower unemployment and overseen strong growth in the German economy. • Theresa May: When the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union, thenPrime Minister David Cameron resigned. • Queen Elizabeth II: The British monarch celebrated her sapphire jubilee last year, marking 65 years on the throne.

• Sheik Hasina Wajed: Wajed persevered through the assassination of 17 members of her family to become the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Despite being ousted from office in 2001, Hasina found herself Prime Minister again in 2009, when her Awami League won 230 of 299 parliamentary seats. • Jacinda Ardern: Serving as the Prime

Women Redefining Opinions On Body Image And Self-Esteem

A

t the end of January 2018, beauty history was made when Ashley Graham was picked up by Revlon to be the first “plus-sized” model in history to land a major beauty contract, joining Gal Gadot, Imaan Hammam and Raquel Zimmerman in the new “Live Boldly” campaign. Graham also broke down barriers by being one of a handful

of non sample-sized models to appear in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Body diversity has become the topic du jour in the entertainment and modeling worlds. According to the data polling source Supplied and beauty manufacturing company Dove, nine in 10 women opt out of important life activities because of body image

issues. A similar percentage of women put their health at risk to stop themselves from eating to lose weight. Cross-cultural research by Dove has indicated that body image recently reached critical impact levels. But thanks to more outspoken models and high-profile individuals, body image and self-esteem as these issues relate to women is improving.

A 2016 study by Bryan Karazsia, an associate professor of psychology at The College of Wooster, examined data from more than 100,000 men and women over 31 years, finding women’s body image dissatisfaction dropped by 3.3% — a “substantial” finding. Some of the reasons behind the change include a shift in media depictions, a new body ideal of lean and toned rather than “skinny,” and because a greater number of people in North America are simply larger. Women can boost their self-esteem and reverse negative feelings about their bodies by introducing new thinking patterns. • Don’t always believe what you see.

Some companies use very small models for their marketing efforts and through digital photo manipulation whittle down bodies even further. Some models dubbed “plussized” do not actually meet that classification. Models are considered plus sized if they wear between a size eight and 12, with some as small as size six. The average American woman wears a size 16, according to the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education, and that’s at the lower end of “plus sized.” • Shop fit not size. What’s appearing on racks may be subjected to “vanity sizing,” where everything from jeans to swimwear

is cut small. Rather than focusing on sizes on the tags, women should choose items that fit well and feel comfortable. • Make a list of positive attributes. The National Eating Disorders Association recommends women focus on the things they like about themselves and attributes that pertain to more than their appearance. • Choose positive friends. Women can surround themselves with positive-minded people who do not compare their bodies to others’. Female self-esteem and positive body images are improving as more women and industries promote body positivity.

Women and STEM

T

he number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computer-science degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to

choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than non-STEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

Screen Out Mammogram Myths To Stay Healthy

B

reast cancer is one of the leading cancers afflicting women worldwide. According to BreastCancer.org, in 2018, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 63,960 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the United States. Women want to do whatever possible to avoid breast cancer or detect it early. Mammograms have long been an important tool in women’s fight against breast cancer. But for as long as mammograms have been recommended, myths have prevailed concerning the procedure and its benefits and risks. Learning to distinguish between mammogram myths and facts can help women recognize

the importance of these effective screenings. Myth: I’m too young for a mammogram. Fact: A yearly mammogram is recommended for women age 40 and older to help detect breast cancer early. This may lead to less aggressive treatment and a higher rate of survival. Myth: I don’t need an annual mammogram because I have no symptoms or family history. Fact: The American College of Radiology recommends annual screening mammograms regardless of symptoms or family history. Earlystage breast cancers may not exhibit symptoms. Women whose breast cancer is caught in its earliest stages have a fiveyear survival rate of 99 percent.

woman or a health care provider can feel lumps. Myth: Mammograms are foolproof.

Myth: I have breast implants so I can’t get screened. Fact: Women with breast implants can still have regular mammograms. Special positioning and additional images may be needed, but the procedure is possible.

Myth: Mammograms are ineffective. Fact: According to British Columbia Cancer Screening, mammograms are the gold standard for detecting breast cancer early. Mammograms may detect breast cancer two to three years before a

Fact: Mammogram screenings are not perfect and are just one tool in helping to detect cancer. Age or breast density can influence the appearance of breast tissue on mammograms. It’s important to note that the inherent qualities of the cancer and how it responds to treatment can affect outcome even if the breast cancer is detected earlier, offers Johns Hopkins Medicine. Myth: Mammograms are the only imaging tools. Fact: Breast MRI, breast ultrasound, and newer 3-D breast mammography are alternative imaging

methods that can help obtain different views of breast tissue, particularly for women with dense breasts. Myth: I can’t get a mammogram without a prescription. Fact: In many cases, women do not need a doctor’s order or prescription to get a screening mammogram. Individuals can selfrefer for an annual appointment. Mammograms can detect breast cancer early, dramatically improving women’s chances of beating the disease. Learning the facts about mammograms can help women calm any concerns they may have regarding these valuable screenings.

Differences In Fat Stores And Metabolism Among Women

G

enetic differences between men’s and women’s bodies extend beyond certain physical traits and hormone levels. Women metabolize food and store fat differently than men, and understanding these differences can help women looking to lose weight. The National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine, states that women generally have

a higher percentage of body fat than men. This fat is stored more readily in the gluteal-femoral region, while men store fat in the abdominal area. Women may become frustrated with fat stores as they embark on fitness regimens to shape their bodies. However, the fat that naturally covers muscle has a purpose, and curves can signify femininity. Women are genetically engineered to carry roughly 18 to

20 percent body fat, whereas men hold 10 to 15 percent body fat. These numbers are approximate and will vary depending on the individual. Fat reserves on the female body are necessary for reproduction. That is why girls will begin to develop fat reserves as they enter into puberty. Fat stores are held in the hips, buttocks, thighs, and lower abdomen and will be used to power nursing and help nourish a growing baby.

Despite eating fewer calories, women can store fat more efficiently than men, according to ScienceDaily. A University of New South Wales research review has suggested a link between estrogen and fat. Studies show that estrogen reduces a woman’s ability to burn energy after eating, which results in more fat being stored around the body. Surprisingly, women can burn more fat during exercise than men, but their fat

storage due to exercise does not deplete as quickly as men’s. This paradox can frustrate female athletes. Some women may opt to restrict calorie consumption even further, but this actually may increase fat storage. When the body consumes fewer calories than it needs, fat reserves increase. At this time, the body essentially goes into starvation mode, storing whichever calories are ingested as fat reserves so there

will be energy available. A key to maintaining healthy fat levels is to determine one’s optimal caloric intake for energy expenditure. A nutritionist or fitness expert can help reach that determination. Women should understand that fat on their bodies serves a distinct purpose. Working with their bodies rather than fighting against them can help women reach their health and fitness goals.

Heart-Healthy Lifestyles Begin In The Kitchen

W

eight-loss initiatives and dieting often go hand-in-hand, but healthy diets can do more than help women shed pounds. Heart disease is the primary killer of females, but

embracing heart-healthy diets can help women reduce their risk of develop cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association reports that heart disease causes one in three female deaths

each year in the United States. The AHA also notes that 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. Heart valve problems, congestive heart failure, abnormal rhythm of the heart, and plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries can contribute to heart disease. Fortunately, healthy choices, including the right diet, can help reduce women’s risk for heart disease risk. Here are a few easy ways to modify eating habits to be more heart-healthy. • Avoid consuming too many calories. The Mayo Clinic says to control portion sizes so that you are not overloading on extra calories. Eat larger portions of nutrient-rich foods and go sparingly on high-calorie, highsodium and/or refined foods. Being overweight can contribute to heart problems.

• Increase produce consumption. A variety of low-calorie fruits and vegetables can provide ample nutrition and plenty of healthy antioxidants. Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables so that you get as many vitamins and minerals as possible. Make fruits and vegetables your largest portions when eating. • Reduce sodium intake. Harvard Health points out that too much sodium consumption can increase blood pressure and cause the body to hold onto fluid. Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular problems. • Add more whole grains to your diet. Dietary fiber from whole grains may improve blood cholesterol levels, thereby lowering your risk for heart disease. Dietary fiber also can lower risk of stroke,

obesity, and type 2 diabetes. • Choose healthy fats. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon, olive oil and flax seed reduce a person’s risk of developing arrhythmia and atherosclerosis. The American Heart Association recommends eating fatty fish at least twice a week as a way to boost omega-3 fatty acid levels. • Load up on berries. When choosing fruits, go heavy on berries. Health magazine reports that according to a 2013 study by the Harvard School of Public Health in the United States and the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom, women between the ages of 25 and 42 who ate more than three servings of blueberries and strawberries a week had a 32 percent lower risk of heart attack compared

with those who ate less. The authors of the study attributed the benefit to compounds known as anthocyanins and flavonoids, which are antioxidants, that may decrease blood pressure and dilate blood vessels. • Indulge in smart ways. When eating sweets, choose dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids called polyphenols, which may help lower blood pressure and reduce clotting and inflammation. Select varieties that contain at least 60 to 70 percent cocoa. In addition to a cardiac-friendly diet, women concerned about heart health should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. Also, pay attention to food labels to make smarter choices.

Safe Medication Use During Pregnancy

W

omen who are expecting are understandably cautious about what they put into their bodies. From the foods they eat to the beverages they drink, expecting mothers tend to take nothing for granted. Expecting mothers also exercise caution about medication. Women typically have questions about medication use during pregnancy, including how current medications can affect a fetus or one’s ability to conceive. Women who take prescription or over-the-counter medications for conditions like diabetes, seizures or depression may be hesitant to continue doing so while pregnant, but unsure

of how to continue their treatments without medication. It’s important to note that pregnancy can affect medications much in the same way that medications can affect pregnancy. The American Pregnancy Association says that when women are pregnant, their blood volume increases, and the heart and kidneys both work harder. This means that medications have the potential to pass through the body more quickly than usual, potentially affecting their efficacy. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that about two-thirds of women in the United States take one or more prescription

medications during pregnancy. Some medications have been adequately studied for their safety during pregnancy, while others have not. Therefore, it is important for women to pay careful attention to any medicine or herbal remedy taken while pregnant, raising any questions they have with their physicians. Keep a careful eye on substances taken during the first trimester of pregnancy, a crucial time of development for the embryo and fetus, and one when medications may have the most impact. The CDC urges women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant to speak with their doctors about medications and dietary products. Some medications should be stopped, while others may be safe to use or should be gradually declined. Doctors can help women weigh the risks and benefits of taking medications while pregnant and point out which ones have the potential to be harmful. Physicians and pharmacists have listings of medications and their risks to the unborn fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists and pharmaceutical companies collect information about the risks of taking medications during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. No drug is 100 percent safe to use during pregnancy, but many have no known harmful effects. When in doubt, pregnant women should always address medication concerns with their obstetricians prior to

taking a particular drug, herbal remedy or dietary supplement. Alternative

therapies, such as chiropractic treatment, massage, acupuncture,

and nerve stimulation also can be addressed during prenatal visits.

Take A Cue From Successful Women

T

wenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made a recent Fortune 500 companies list, tying a record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America's largest companies by revenue. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center. Certain traits could help propel successful women to the top. Here’s a look at some of the ways female professionals

can overcome professional hurdles and make their mark. • Be passionate about what you do. Women who maintain passion about their careers are more likely to overcome any challenges and stand out in the workplace. If your profession is not stoking any passion, explore alternate career opportunities. • Recognize your strengths. Today’s professionals are less likely than their predecessors to stick with one company or line of work for their entire working lives. But just because you change jobs or career paths does not mean your past experience is useless. Successful women know what they do best, whether it’s public speaking, writing

or making sales pitches. Apply those strengths when looking for a new job or career. • Know when to ask for help. Even the most accomplished women have limitations. Asking for help when you need it can help you overcome those limitations. To be good at what you do, you first have to learn from others. Sometimes the smartest way to

overcome an obstacle is having several hands on deck to provide a boost. Thinking that the work is better left to you alone could be a mistake. Enlist help when you need it and never hesitate to ask for another perspective. • Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them

maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming. • Go easy on yourself. While many successful people strive for perfection, achieving perfection is unlikely, if not impossible. Successful people often admit to being their own

worst critics, but don’t beat yourself up if you endure some trial and error. Mistakes can be a great teacher, so use any you make to your advantage. • Don’t be afraid to take risks. Successful women are not afraid to take risks. Many may have decided they don’t fit a specific mold and want to affect change. However, calculated risks are different from reckless decisions, and it is important to recognize the difference. A calculated risk may involve starting your own business after learning the ropes in a specific field and testing the waters. Reckless behavior would be opening that business with no relevant experience.

Understanding Factors That Can Contribute To Fatigue

W

omen serve many roles each day. From mothers to employees to spouses, women must perform a balancing act that can lead to fatigue as a side effect. According to recent research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, women are more likely than men to say they’re tired or even exhausted. All of that running around certainly can contribute to fatigue, but other factors also can lead to tiredness. Getting to the root of fatigue can

help women regain their energy levels. Insufficient sleep Women tend to multitask and use more of their brains than men, leading to a greater need for sleep, reports the National Sleep Foundation. Even though they may require more hours of shut-eye, many women are not getting the proper rest. In order to gain more energy, NSF recommends women get regular exercise, limit their caffeine and alcohol intake, improve their sleeping environments

(i.e. a dark, cool room), and establish routine sleep and wake times to promote better chances of sleeping between seven and nine per night. The NSF also notes that women are more likely than men to experience insomnia. Women whose energy levels are dwindling due to sleeplessness should seek assistance from their physicians. Stress The Women’s Health Network points out that constant stress or adrenal hormone imbalance can

rob women of energy, leading to feelings of tiredness all the time. Finding successful methods of relieving stress can help women regain energy. Delegating work or asking for help is one way for women to lighten their workloads. Mindfulness and meditation may help calm overactive thoughts. Exercise also is a healthy way to relieve stress and can promote the release of feel-good endorphins. Anemia Anemia may be the culprit behind some women’s sagging energy levels. The Mayo Clinic defines anemia as a condition in which the body does not have sufficient healthy red blood cells to carry enough oxygen to bodily tissues. Anemia may be mild or severe, temporary or chronic.

Women often lament they’re overtired. There are ways to regain energy. Treatment for anemia may be as simple as eating a healthy diet. Supplementation with iron or iron-rich foods may be recommended as well. Anemia also can be caused by hidden blood loss. That’s why it’s best to address anemia under the supervision of a doctor. Lack of exercise Although it may seem like exercise would tire a person out, the opposite is true. WebMD says studies consistently show that people who exercise regularly experience less fatigue than those who do

not. The reasons are not completely understood, but it could be due to exercise helping the body to work more efficiently and pumping oxygenrich blood where it is needed. Exercise can help with sleep issues, anxiety and depression, which also zap energy levels. To boost energy, exercise in the low- to mediumexertion range. Exercises to try include biking, walking, light resistance training, or even yoga. Restoring energy levels can be easier once the source of fatigue is identified.
