Jefferson County Historical Society To Present

“Barbara Kay Portrays Molly Brown” Jefferson County Historical Society will present “Barbara Kay Portrays Molly Brown” at 2 p.m. on June 16 at the Historical Village in the Schweinfurth Museum. Though Margaret “Molly” Brown’s lasting fame stems from her survival of the Titanic disaster, her lasting influence arises from her achievements as a social reformer and champion of the rights of women, children, and workers. Molly’s journey from poverty and obscurity to international prominence traversed the mining camps of Colorado, the

theaters and ballrooms of Paris and New York, and the voting booth, which she helped to open to women. Barbara Kay’s vivacious living history portrayal of Brown traces that journey, explaining the significance of each step and showing why it remains both instructive and inspiring today. About the presenter: Barbara Kay taught history at Highland High School in southwestern Illinois for 30 years and has also taught at schools in Missouri and Germany. She has received honors for her work as an educa-

tor, including the 2011 Schweizer American History Teacher Award from the Illinois Society Sons of the American Revolution. Over the past two decades, she has portrayed more than a dozen women from American history. There is no charge for the program, donations are appreciated. The Jefferson County Historical Village is located at 1411 North 27th Street in Mt. Vernon. For more information contact the Historical Society office at 618-246-0033.

Bridles and Bits The old west owes much to the horse and the cowboys who rode them. Before the west was tamed, man learned how to tame and use the horse. The horse was so essential to a man on the range that horse thieves were summarily hung. When we lived out west, it was amazing to see many children ride horses with expertise. What enabled them to have so much control over a horse which outweighed them by hundreds of pounds? They learned how to use the bridle and bit to direct the horse. Can you imagine how hard it would be to control a car if the steering wheel came off ? It may have a powerful engine, perhaps even a “hemi,” but all that power would be dangerous without a throttle or a ste e r i ng w h e e l. Someone said that the

problem is not the steering wheel, but the nut behind the wheel. In the same manner, how much damage and destruction can be done by the smallest member of our body — namely the tongue. During World War II, the government warned our citizens that “loose lips sink ships.” The tongue may be a small part of our body, but it can sink more than a ship. The Word of God has much to say about the tongue. Your tongue is a barometer of true religion. “If any man among you seems to be religious and bridles not his tongue but deceives his own heart this man’s religion is vain.” (James 1:26) James tells us this about our words, “For in many things we offend all. If any man offends not in word, the same is a perfect man and able to bridle the whole body.” (James 3:2)

Just as we can control a powerful horse with a bridle and bit, so we must control our tongue. As a large ship can be controlled by a small rudder, so our tongue can give direction to our life or crash us on the rocks. “Behold we put bits in horse’s mouths that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body.” (James 3:3-4) Consider how much damage the tongue can do. “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindles, and the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity so is the tongue amongst our members . . . setteth on fire the course of nature and is set on fire of hell.” (James 3:5-6) Sometimes I suffer from hoof and mouth disease. I put my foot in my mouth — I speak without thinking. When I was a kid, we used to give a retort to those who would taunt us, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!” I don’t know where we learned that refrain, but I soon learned that it was not true. Words

can be very piercing and damaging. Before I went into the ministry, my pastor gave me a book by Dale Carnegie, “How to Win Friends and Influence Enemies.” As he handed it to me he said, “Here, you’re really going to need this!” It was a blow to my pride, but true. Over the years my tongue got me into more trouble than anything else. But God has graciously taught me that my tongue under his control can do a world of good. James says, “But the tongue can no man tame. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” (James 3:8) While it is true that no man can fully control the tongue, God can, if you surrender it to him. As horses must be controlled by bridles and bits, so we need to control our tongue. Bridles and bits can control a horse but only Christ can bring control over your tongue. Are you master controlled? Surrender your life to Jesus Christ and let his Spirit direct your tongue to speak life . Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Cedarhurst Matching Donation Announced

Shopper's Weekly Staff Photo

A group from Withers Broadcasting Group was on hand for the announcement of the Kimball's Habitat campaign. A ceremony was held Thursday evening, May 31 at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts to announce a matching fund donation campaign for Kimball's Habitat at Cedarhurst. You can help protect the art and nature that live at Cedarhurst by donating to the Kimball's Habitat campaign. All donations made between Memorial Day and Labor Day (up to $25,000) will be matched by Withers Broadcasting Companies. With your help, the Kimball's Habitat campaign will make these things possible: • Conservation efforts will revitalize the museum's outdoor sculpture collection. • Treatment of wooded areas will help balance the park's ecosystem. • New lighting elements will address safety concerns and improve aesthetics. • New amenities and educational features will entice visitors to stay longer and return often.

The American Red Cross is counting on volunteer donors to give blood and help ensure patient needs can be met this summer. Around Memorial Day, the Red Cross sees a steep decline in blood donations. Busy summer schedules, vacations and school breaks also cause a drop in donations. Accidents and medical emergencies don’t take a summer break — patients need blood every minute, every day. The public is asked to schedule an appointment to help ensure that hospitals and patients have the blood they need this summer. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org

OPINIONS

In the news last week: • U.S. jobless rate drops to 3.8%. Employers add 223,000 jobs in May as hiring showed a healthy pickup from the prior month. • Trump administration plans to extend steel and aluminum tariffs to Canada, Mexico and the European Union. The measure took effect last Friday. • President Trump pardons conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza. • Robert Mueller revealed the price tag for his special investigation, a cost of nearly $17 million so far, on nothing more than a witch hunt. And what does the major media focus on but Roseanne Barr. Not that I agree with her late night rant, however, in my opinion, there are better issues to cover. The rumor was that Fox was picking her show up for those that like it. It's not true. The story was intended as satire. Personally, I don't watch RoseAnn, Late Night, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and certainly not The View. Oh well, on to the State of Illinois. As Sen. Kyle McCarter put it, "A busy week for the Senate." The Illinois Senate concluded its spring legislative session. A bipartisan state budget plan passed that's, unfortunately, more about politicians than the people. The budget was over 1,200 pages long. The Senate was given an analysis on the details about an hour before the debate began. The budget proposal was not broken down into individual bills dealing with various state agencies.

However, it was noted that there was $180 million for infrastructure associated with former President Barack Obama's Presidential Library in Chicago, which makes no sense with the financial challenges the State is facing, not to mention the $1.6 billion in overdue bills. Sen. McCarter admitted during the debate May 30 you can accurately describe the budget as "make believe." The sad part is there were only two Senators that voted "no," with one being Sen. McCarter. In my opinion, all this is bad news for the State of Illinois. Again, another bill passed by the Democratic controlled legislature And my favorite Senator and friend, Kyle McCarter, bid farewell to his friends and colleagues. This was Senator McCarter's last spring legislative session. He was nominated to be the next U.S. Ambassador to Kenya. He and his family have had a great love affair for 30 years with the Kenyan people while spending so much time in assisting some of the poorest of the poor with basic life needs, including medical care, food and education. Below are his parting words that should apply to each of us. "Our convictions and beliefs may be very different but that does not mean we cease to argue for them with the utmost respect for the person whose views we oppose… Government is a necessary institution but much less capable of delivering functional families, neighborhoods without killing and a peaceful and prosperous country than

we think. Its’ effectiveness, I believe, will be equal to the compassion and servant leadership of the politicians in power and their willingness to have tough, crucial conversations… "Our tolerance of the status quo in Illinois and the United States — which is sadly characterized many times by corruption, selfservice, and power seeking — this is unacceptable. As leaders we can all start over by repenting to God and the people for not doing more, more of the things that deliver good to the people and not just ourselves. We must be good stewards of the gifts God has endowed us with to help our neighbors, the poor, and our fellow citizens. "May we all gather from within us the courage to stand for what is right for the people of Illinois not just for our party or anyone’s rise to power, including our own. "It has been my honor and privilege to serve with you, to spar with you, and

be entertained by you. If not for the training and experience and wisdom I have gained from my time here in the Senate, if not for God’s provision, I would not be prepared for my next assignment to serve our country. "Lincoln said, ‘I bid you an affectionate farewell.’ I feel the same love for you. May God bless you and give you favor as you honor Him and serve, with courage, the people of Illinois. "‘Tutaonana. Karibu Kenya.’ See you later. You’re always welcome. "I would be honored to introduce you as my friends.” Until next week. Notable Quotable: “I love to see honest and honorable men at the helm, men who will not bend their politics to their purses, nor pursue measures by which they may profit, and then profit by their measures.” — Thomas Jefferson (1743 – 1826); 3rd President of the United States; Thomas Jefferson (1829). “Memoirs, correspondence and private papers of Thomas Jefferson, ed. by T.J. Randolph”, p.344 Such a man is Sen. Kyle McCarter. Thank you and Godspeed, my friend. Hope to see you in Kenya.

“The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.

HEALTH & S ECS FITN L SE TION SPECIA

Improve Personal Health Starting With Digestion “You are what you eat” is a familiar adage that bears some truth. Research consistently points to specific functional components of foods and beverages that may improve overall health. Eating a diet that includes foods from all the major food groups and maintaining an optimally functioning digestive system are keys to a healthy lifestyle. But people may be able to do even more. Digestive aids can provide the extra boost necessary to achieve a healthy gut. Digestive aids are supplements that can enhance the enzymes and

functions of the body and aid in the digestion of food. Some aids may help reduce gas, bloating and flatulence, while others may boost the health of digestive flora or reduce constipation. Here’s a look at some of the digestive helpers that people may consider.

Probiotics

The Mayo Clinic says that probiotics are a type of “good” bacteria that can help with digestion and offer protection from harmful bacteria. Probiotics work in concert with other good bacteria already in the body.

Here at Nature Trail we offer:

• Clinic Capabilities • 24 Hour RN Coverage • Breathe Program (for those with COPD, Pulmonary Issues, Respiratory Failure) • Transport To Dialysis WINNER • Trachs OF THE 2016 • Feeding Tubes BLUE RIBBON • TPN AWARD

And Lots of TLC!

Probiotics are found in many fermented foods, such as yogurt, sauerkraut and kefir, and can be found in concentrated supplement form. Two of the most common and well-known probiotics bacteria are lactobacillus and bifidobacter iu m . Ac c ord i ng to Prebiotin, a prebiotic manufacturer, bifidobacteria fight harmful bacteria in the intestines, prevent constipation and give the immune system a boost. Evidence also indicates that bifidobacteria help reduce intestinal concentrations of cer tain carcinogenic enzymes.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics sound similar to probiotics, but they are quite dif ferent. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says prebiotics are essentially the food necessary for probiotics to thrive. Prebiotics are natural, nondigestible food components that help promote the growth of helpful gut bacteria. Prebiotics are different forms of fiber from foods like bananas, skins of apples, beans, chicory root, and more. The undigested prebiotic is fermented by the time it reaches the large intestine and colon and

The Many Ways Cardiovascular Exercise Benefits Your Body Cardiovascular exercise has long been noted as an important component of a well-rounded fitness regimen. But even the most ardent exercise enthusiast may not know just how profound an impact cardiovascular exercise, often referred to as “cardio,” can have on various parts of the body. According to the Cleveland Clinic, cardio affects the body from head to toe, providing some surprising benefits.

• Brain: The brain benefits from cardiovascular exercise in myriad ways. Cardio increases blood flow and decreases a person’s risk of stroke, a potentially debilitating and even deadly interruption in the flow of blood to the brain. Cardio also has been shown to improve memory and cognitive ability, while helping men and women combat age-related decline in brain function. • Skin: Even skin, the largest organ in the human body, can benefit from cardio. Routine cardiovascular exercise can increase circulation, contributing to clearer, healthier skin. • Blood: The blood that flows throughout the human body is no exception when it comes to benefitting from cardiovascular exercise. Cardio helps control blood sugar and improves levels of highdensity lipoprotein, also known as “good” cholesterol. • Muscles: Exercise enthusiasts who love to strength train should not discount the benefits of including cardio in their workout regimens, which can increase oxygen supply to muscles, allowing them to work harder. Cardio also helps muscles adapt to an increased workload that

can make routine activities seem easier. • Pancreas: Cardio improves the ability of the pancreas to control the body’s blood sugar levels, thereby decreasing stress on this vital gland and reducing a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes. • Lungs: The lungs benefit from cardiovascular exercise because cardio improves exercise ability, decreasing the demand on the lungs the more people exercise. That also helps reduce fatigue and shortness of breath in people with chronic lung problems. • Bones and joints: Cardio has a profound impact on bones and joints, helping even those with arthritis more capably manage their discomfort and maintain their range of motion. Aging men and women can employ cardiovascular exercise to combat osteoporosis, a condition linked to aging in which bones become fragile and brittle from loss of tissue. • Mind: Cardiovascular exercise has even been shown to improve mood, especially when cardio is performed at the end of stressful days. Cardio also can help combat depression and improve self-esteem.

TIF Districts:

the commercial buildings available for new use. This additional investment causes the property to increase in assessed value, for example — and conservatively — leading to the tax paid on each parcel going from $30,000 per year in property taxes to $60,000 per year. The public and private investment would increase the total property taxes paid from $60,000 each year ($30,000 per parcel), to $120,000 each year ($60,000 per parcel). The project would result in $60,000 in new tax increment, which the municipality could use to off-set its original investment in less than nine years. After this initial investment is paidoff, the newly generated increment can be used for additional investments in the area. “Ultimately, after the conclusion of the TIF

Week 1: How Do TIF Districts Work? By Bob Watt, Jefferson County Treasurer The following is a direct quote from the Illinois Tax Increment Association website: “A tax increment is the difference between the amount of property tax revenue generated before TIF district designation and the amount of property tax revenue generated after designation. Establishment of a TIF does not reduce property tax revenues available to overlapping taxing bodies as the property taxes collected on properties included in the TIF at the time of designation continue to be distributed to them in the same manner as they would if the TIF did not exist. Only the new property taxes gener-

ated by the incremental increase in the value of these properties after the TIF is established are available for investment in the TIF. “For example, assume that a municipality wants to develop an area that includes two parcels that contain substandard commercial buildings. Let’s also assume that both of these parcels are paying $30,000 per year in property taxes. However, the municipality finds that by making an investment of $500,000 to rehabilitate the buildings on the two parcels and provide necessary infrastructure, private developers will commit an additional $2,000,000, making

project, all of this new revenue growth is available to the various taxing bodies. Successful TIF investment therefore serves all of the investors, both public and private. Private investors are helped by a reduction in development cost and risk, and public investors by the generation of additional revenue available at the conclusion of the TIF project.” In this example the municipality invested available funds to kick start the TIF, then recouped the investment over the next nine years. An alternative would be to accumulate the incremental property taxes for investment once a sufficient reserve fund has been established. This is how a TIF district is supposed to work. Next time: What are some typical TIF projects?
