KC Board, Federation of Teachers Ratify New Contract in Special Meeting The Kaskaskia College Board of Trustees met in emergency session on Friday, June 1, 2018. Board members include Bill Hawley (Odin), Linda Stover (Centralia), Dr. Dee Boswell, (Centralia), Jim Beasley (Centralia), Jack Mays (Centralia), Bryan Holthaus (St. Rose), and Laura Wedekemper (Shattuc). The purpose of the meeting was the approval of a new three year contract between the college and the Kaskaskia College Federation of Teachers. The agreement calls for a two and one half percent increase on faculty base salaries the first year and two percent each of the succeeding two years plus step increases. In addition, by working together the faculty and administration identified savings that will allow for the college to maintain its current insurance coverage. While the plan will have a higher deductible, it will be offset with a Health

Reimbursement Account (HRA) arrangement. KC Interim President George Evans praised the faculty union and their representatives in working with the college to reach this new agreement. “I cannot commend the faculty union leadership and their Illinois Federation of Teachers Rep Keith Griffith enough for working together with the college in these positive, but challenging economic times,” said Evans. Originally trustees were set to vote to ratify the tentative agreement at a special meeting on June 5; however, an emergency meeting was called for June 1 to ratify the agreement prior to the states’ new budget going into effect. This was due to provisions in the budget bill that could Submitted Photos have a significant impact on certain provisions agreed on by the college and Pictured are Bill Hawley, Chairman, KC Board of Trustees (right) and Ken faculty. Southern Illinois Networking Association (SINA) met on May 31 at the Centralia Recreation Complex. President Mike Chambers introduced Michelle Moreno from SPERO as the speaker for the morning. Michelle spoke on foster care as well as other programs that they offer. Michelle spoke on the high need for foster families in our area. She said that many times people mentor the children and that leads to becoming a

foster family. Families have to go through classes, background checks and home visits before they become a licensed foster family. This process usually takes six months. She said that SPERO needs foster care for children ages 12 to 18. Families need to be committed to doing this and be very loving and caring with the children. The children definitely need positive role models in their lives. The Spero Foster Care program utilizes foster

parents for youth within the Southern Region of Illinois. Their foster parents receive a high level of training and support to provide specialized care for this vulnerable population of youth. In explaining what makes Spero Foster Care different, Michelle mentioned the following: • Monthly training and support for foster parents; • Regular staffing and support from the SPERO foster team; • Engagement opportunities with other foster families; • Lead foster peer support when needed; • Being a part of a team with a face based mission and a vision to provide hope health and healing. SPERO's mission says it all: "Honoring God, we envision communities where people are physically, emo-

tionally and spiritually healthy. We offer hope, health and healing by providing Christ-centered human services to meet the ever-changing needs of individuals, families and communities." Michelle put out an appeal asking people to please help Spero get much needed foster families by either being a foster parent themselves or by helping spread the word among friends, family, work and church. We're getting closer to the Trump-Kim summit being held in Singapore Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. By the time you read this column I'm sure we'll all know the results. On Saturday, Trump arrived at the set destination 10,000 miles from Washington just a short time after Kim Jong-un and started preparing. My prediction is they could meet for 60 seconds until the President says no dice, or one meeting could turn into two or three or four. Let's face facts, you don't undo 70 years of war overnight. Who knows? But what I do know is in 16 months Donald Trump has accomplished more than Barack Obama did in eight years and is the first sitting U.S. President that's met face to face with any North Korean leader.

you that right! In my opinion, these protests failed. All the football players did was turn millions of people off. There hasn't been a football game watched in our home since all this craziness started, and there probably won't be again. These players should be grateful they have the opportunity to live in a country where they have the freedom and the right to pursue their dreams and be paid well for what they do. To be fair, last season none of the Philadelphia Eagles players took a knee. On to Washington. Last week when Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was asked what she thought about the record low unemployment numbers, her comment was, "Hip hip hurray. What does that mean to me?" This shows you how Speaker Pelosi thinks. But this is the same woman that defended the M-13 gang. And last, to top the week off, a leak investigation led to a Senate aide's indictment. James Wolfe was indicted on Thursday after it was found he was sharing information over pillow talk with New York Times reporter Ali Watkins. She hasn't been indicted yet for receiving classified information, but if Jeff Sessions comes out of hiding, not only will he nail the exSenate aide, but the New York Times reporter as well. Until next week.

While the left ranted for failure, the Prime Minister of Japan said, "This is a major step forward." The bottom line is, with Donald Trump as our leader, America is once again getting her mojo back! On to the NFL, specifically the Philadelphia Eagles — many of whom, in my opinion, are unpatriotic, spoiled rotten, overpaid, unappreciative brats. President Donald Trump reached out to the football players and invited 60 to the White House, which most of us would consider an honor. When he found out only six planned on attending, he canceled. Instead, Trump made it a celebration party for the U.S.A. I say good for Trump. Of course CNN took the low road, calling Trump fake. Wow, coming from

CNN, could I have fun with that one. But on top of that, they called him a racist. But putting all that aside, go to the NFL players protesting. I actually know of people that think a football game is a good venue and time to protest by kneeling during the national anthem. Personally, I'll never think that's acceptable. Not now, not tomorrow, not ever. The price many have paid for our freedom is way too high for anyone to disrespect the national anthem as well as burning the U.S flag. But with that said, those same people that paid a heavy price gave us the right, the freedom to protest, and I'm okay with that, but not at a football game during the national anthem. Take it somewhere else and don't show disrespect for those that gave

A Statewide Property Tax Increase Will Devastate Illinois Families

Welcome To

In May, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago published an opinion piece which proposed a way to pay down our state’s massive unfunded pension liability. The solution? Raise property taxes on every homeowner in the state by around 1% of a home’s actual property value every year for the next 30 years. In their words, “homeowners with homes worth $250,000 would pay an additional $2,500 per year in property taxes, those with homes worth $500,000 would pay an additional $5,000” etc. Some elected officials in Springfield support ideas such as this one, or others like it, which result in crushing tax increases for everyone. I want to make it clear to voters why I stand against such proposals and why they ultimately don’t solve the state’s fiscal crisis. According to the ratings agency Fitch, Illinois has the highest pension burden of all 50 states; a cost that some estimate to be over $250 billion. It’s important

to point out that the Chicago economists who crafted this tax plan relied on a much smaller figure, $129 billion, when coming up with their proposal to raise taxes on every Illinois homeowner for the next three decades. This means that if enacted, this proposal would actually fall well short of eliminating the pension cost and taxpayers would still be on the hook for more. There are several assumptions that these economists made that our leaders cannot afford to entertain. We cannot assume, or trust, that Illinois will succeed in making its regular payments to the pension system because it has failed to do so in the past. We cannot assume that it is somehow “fair” for taxpayers to bear responsibility for correcting the terrible public policy that has led us to where we are now. We cannot assume that such proposals will not in fact worsen our fiscal crisis. For instance, Illinois lost more population than any other between 2016 and 2017, according to census estimates. If so many of our fellow citizens are choosing to pack up and leave the state now, imagine how much out-

migration will increase if schemes like this one are put in place. In their paper, the authors acknowledge that it would be difficult for many taxpayers to bear the burden of this new tax. They admit, and actually count on the fact, that this idea would drive down home values and they even recommend imposing a steep tax penalty for any existing homeowner who attempts to sell their home and leave the state. Yes, you read that right. What a scary concept. Tax homeowners, destroy property values, and penalize the ones who try to leave, effectively making them prisoners in their own homes. The effect that this measure would have on economic confidence in Illinois would be disastrous and the hardship placed on working families is shocking and immoral. Only academics in their ivory towers could concoct an idea like this one without reflecting more carefully on the terrible consequences faced by already overtaxed families throughout Illinois Thankfully this plan has been met with widespread criticism and is unlikely to gain traction, but its outline

is representative of a larger, and very real, problem in Illinois: career politicians will continue to punish innocent taxpayers for their sins. They will talk about shared sacrifice to address the pension issue, but the pain is always felt most by the middle income taxpayer. I will not allow plans such as this one to go unchallenged in Springfield and every Illinoisan should view similar proposals with great skepticism. If history is any indication, you can count on the state to significantly underestimate the true cost of such plans. We cannot continue to raise taxes on a continuously shrinking tax base. We need new leaders with long-term solutions, not Band-Aids, to fix the serious problems we face. The Jefferson County Historical Society Presents:

Barbara Kay portrays Molly Brown Saturday, June 16th at 2:00 p.m. in the Schweinfurth Museum at the Historical Village

Though Margaret “Molly” Brown’s lasting fame stems from her survival of the Titanic disaster, her lasting influence arises from her achievements as a social reformer and champion of the rights of women, children, and workers. Molly’s journey from poverty and obscurity to international prominence traversed the mining camps of Colorado, the theaters and ballrooms of Paris and New York, and the voting booth, which she helped to open to women. Barbara Kay’s vivacious living history portrayal of Brown traces that journey, explaining the significance of each step and showing why it remains both instructive and inspiring today.

Summer Food & Fun I love to be in the kitchen twelve months out of the year, but other than the holidays, I especially like the early summer months, for a number of reasons. One is the food is fresh, and another is grilling. So here are a few of my favorites. Up first Sausage, Tomato and Fennel Shells.

Sausage, Tomato & Fennel Shells 3/4 lb. sweet Italian sausage, casings removed 1 bulb fennel, chopped, fronds reserved 1 cup white wine 6 oz. cherry tomatoes 4 T. butter

1 shallot, finely chopped 3/4 lb. pasta shells cooked, 1/2 cup cooking water, reserved Grated Parmesan Lemon zest

In large skillet, cook sausage over medium-high heat, breaking up with a spoon, until browned, 5 minutes. Add chopped fennel, tomatoes, butter and shallot; cook until softened, 12 to 14 minutes. Stir in pasta and cooking water; season. Top with Parmesan, lemon zest and fennel fronds. Serves 4.

Member Of Shoppers Weekly Team Seeks Crowdfunding For Novel By Cathy Stuehmeier

Having been in the media business for 50+ plus years, I can tell you that there is something about it that attracts talented individuals. I've had the honor of working with a particular one of those talented individuals for over 20 of those years. Scott Pinkowski is the production manager at the Shoppers Weekly Papers. Not only does he utilize his talents to design effective advertisements for our clients and help keep dayto-day operations running smoothly at the paper, but he's decided to pursue novel writing on his own. Over the years, he has contributed a few writing pieces to the paper for publication and I immediately recognized his knack for words. I remember once telling him that he may have missed his calling as a writer. At the time, I didn't suspect that he'd taken those words to heart. So, delving into the world of writing may not seem at all unusual, but perhaps it is how he did it that stands out in my mind. Many of our team members are parents, so it's not uncommon to see their kids hanging out at the office during the odd hours

Scott and Audrey Pinkowski that babysitters are unavailable. On any given day you might see a kid or two reading or drawing or playing with a tablet. Scott has two wonderful children, 12-year-old Drake and 10-year-old Audrey. It was always a treat to have Audrey around at the office. All of the staff might find hand-made greeting cards in their mailbox from time to time or a handmade storybook might make the rounds. Many of the staff still have a few of her drawings and cards hanging by their desks as keepsakes. One of the

many creative things she would do while in the Shoppers Weekly headquarters is write stories. She'd sit at the upstairs production department table and write, illustrate and staple together these elaborate storybooks. It's one of these storybooks that catapulted Scott into the world of writing. Scott told me that last year, he started a collaboration with Audrey to turn one of her superhero stories into a printed and bound family keepsake. But the project (Continued on page 7)

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Cure for Loneliness Loneliness is part of the human condition. Dictionaries define loneliness as “lacking support from others, isolated, lonely, sad because one has no friends or company, without companions, solitary.” Many factors can bring on loneliness. Some people tend to ostracize or ignore others because they are different, disabled, elderly, poor, or have an unpleasant personality or behavior. Some people are lonely because for some

reason they are anti-social. But even the great King David had times of loneliness. “I am like a pelican of the wilderness; I am like an owl of the desert. I lie awake and am like a sparrow alone on the housetop.” (Psalm 102:67) The good news is that there is a cure for loneliness. You never have to be lonely again. In the very beginning God created Adam and Eve to be the perfect compliment and companion for each other. But God knew down deep in their heart and soul they needed more. Man

later, the email came saying that Words Matter Publishing was interested in publishing the story. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Cheer up, Lamb. Your emotional impasse will lift once you allow your highly tuned sense of justice to guide you on what to do about an associate’s questionable behavior. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) News about a project you hoped to work on might need more clarification. Take nothing just on faith. Draw up a list of questions, and insist on each being fully answered. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Giving your time to help others is fine. But don’t lose sight of your own needs. Make plans for an energy-restoring getaway with that very special person in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Congratulate yourself on getting that difficult job done to everyone’s satisfaction. This could be the first of many such challenges you might be offered down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) With your enthusiasm soaring again, you feel ready to tackle a tough new assignment. Good for you! And remember: Don’t be too proud to accept help when it’s offered. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Cupid rules the week for single Virgos eager to make a romantic connection. Meanwhile, Virgo couples experience renewed commitment in their relationships. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Home and work issues vie for your attention through early next

week. Rely on your Libran sense of balance to keep you from being overwhelmed by either side. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creative projects might have to go on standby as you tackle other matters making demands on your time and energy. Things should ease by the middle of next week. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your energies are high, and so are your aspirations. But be careful not to let work dominate the week. It’s also important to spend time with family and friends. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It’s a good time to set aside your pride and stop nursing those hurt feelings. Instead, consider restoring relationships you want to have back in your life. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might be miffed at not being shown more appreciation for your hard work. But don’t brood over it. Recognition comes in its own time and in its own way. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With your inner creative juices starting to boil and bubble, this is a good time to launch a new arts-related project, or go back and restart the one you had set aside. was created to have a relationship and fellowship with God, our Creator. “And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.” God desired and delighted in having fellowship with Adam and Eve. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, sin entered humanity. What did Adam and Eve do? They hid from God, because they realized they were naked. God killed an animal and clothed them with the skin of the animal. (Genesis 2:8-9, 15-24; 3:8-15) Man was separated from God because of sin and out of fellowship. An inner loneliness gnawed at their heart and soul. But God prophesied of the cure for sin. Speaking to the serpent, Satan, God declared, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between

your seed and her seed; He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heal.” (Genesis 3:14-15) This scripture foretold of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and his victory over the devil and sin. Fellowship with God is restored. Jesus Christ is the cure for loneliness. Follow these steps and never be lonely again. FOLLOW CHRIST. As God walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the day in the Garden of Eden — he invites you to come and walk with Jesus Christ. (Matthew 11:2830) An old children’s song from the recording “The Donut Man”, is so true, “Life without Christ is like a donut, there’s a hole in the middle of your heart.” Jesus promises to never leave nor forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5-6) FAMILY RELATION-

SHIPS ARE OF GOD. Try your best to keep family relationships healthy and thriving. This takes work, forgiveness, and intentionality. “God sets the solitary in families; he brings out those who are bound into prosperity; but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.” (Psalm 68:5-6) If you are alone, perhaps you can adopt a family. There is nothing as vital and fulfilling as the family of God — the church. “For this reason, I bow my knee to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.” (Ephesians 3:14-19) FRIENDS. Don’t wish for a friend — make a friend. It’s not your resume that measures your success in life — it’s your relationships. A friend will stand with you in adversity. A true friend will

nurture and encourage you. The quality of your life is determined by how you spend your life and with whom you spend it. There is no friend like Jesus. (John 15:12-17) FELLOWSHIP. A cure for loneliness is fellowship. The Greek word is “koinonia”, to share with others or partnership. (Acts 2:42; I Corinthians 1:9) But deep down every person has an inner longing and spiritual need that only Christ can fill. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hears my voice and opens unto me, I will come in to him and sup with him and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20) Jesus is the cure for loneliness.

of extra-terrestrial conspiracy theories. The girls learn that their powers come at a great cost and that many will suffer because of their decisions. Isabelle begins to realize that there's more to being a hero than having special powers. However, Crystal has ambitions of her own. Scott recently launched a Kickstarter campaign so that Words Matter Publishing can help turn the pub-

lication of this story into a reality. It's an all-or-nothing 30-day crowdfunding campaign, so there is no risk to you if you decide to become a backer. If 99% or less of his goal is achieved then there will be no charge to you and the publishing of Ordinary Everyday Isabelle will NOT become a reality. Only in the event of the goal being met will you be charged and the project

will move forward. If the campaign is successful, backers will receive a reward. Backers can choose to pledge as much or as little as they want, but as the size of pledges goes up, so does the quality of the rewards. E-book rewards start at just $15, and your own paperback copy of the book will be awarded at the $25 level and so on. Remember, becoming a backer of Ordinary Every-

day Isabelle is so much more than just pre-ordering a book, it is becoming a virtual shareholder in the dream of one dad and his daughter. Let's band together and help Scott show his daughter that if she sets her heart and mind to a task that she really can achieve anything.
