On June 25, 1950 the Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People's Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Sovietbacked Democratic People's Republic of Korea to the north and the proWestern Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea's behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the
forces of international communism itself. After some early back-andforth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. Meanwhile, American officials worked anxiously to fashion some sort of armistice with the North Koreans. The alternative, they feared, would be a wider war with Russia and China — or even, as some warned, World War III. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end. In all, some 5 million soldiers and civil-
ians lost their lives during the war. The Korean peninsula is still divided today. Unlike World War II and Vietnam, the Korean War did not get much media attention in the United States. The Korean War was relatively short but exceptionally bloody. Nearly 5 million people died. More than half of these–about 10 percent of Korea’s prewar population–were civilians. (This rate of civilian casualties was higher than World War II’s and Vietnam’s.)

As discussed previously, TIF districts were designed for the purpose of substantially increasing the EAV (Equalized Assessed Valuation) of properties within the TIF district. TIF projects can take on different characteristics depending upon the location, and condition of properties. Mt Vernon has three designated TIF districts, each having unique characteristics. The Downtown TIF has most of the basic infrastructure already in place – things
like streets, water and sewer lines, and basic utilities. While there may be a need to upgrade, or modernize parts of the infrastructure, the greater need might be the condition or configuration of the properties themselves. A TIF project here might involve demolishing, or repurposing an existing building to create a “new use – like converting an old bank building into upscale apartments, or condos that would have a much higher value, or constructing a new building on a
vacant lot, again increasing the value of the property. Remember, the purpose is to significantly increase the EAV and generate much higher property taxes in the future. The East Side TIF which is located on the east side of Interstates 57 & 64 may be in need of new or improved streets and sidewalks, higher capacity water and sewer lines, or the development of vacant or undeveloped property. The demolition and clearing of old buildings to make way for new development might even be a viable use of TIF funds. The end goal is higher EAV’s for the involved properties. The West Side TIF consists largely of farmland that may include some infrastructure, but is insufficient to support
A’s, B’s And O’s Missing: Red Cross Campaign Calls For New Blood Donors To Fill Missing Types
As part of an international movement, the American Red Cross is launching the Missing Types campaign to recruit new blood donors — and those who have not given recently — to ensure lifesaving blood is available for patients. During the Missing Types campaign, the letters A, B and O — the main blood groups — will disappear from brands, social media pages, signs and websites to illustrate the

critical role every blood donor plays. When the letters A, B and O vanish from everyday life, the gaps are striking. And when A, B and O blood types are missing from hospital shelves, patient care could be impacted. Don’t wait until the letters A, B and O go missing from hospital shelves. Join the #MissingType movement today — make an appointment to give blood by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/
MissingTypes, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Upcoming blood donation opportunities through July 3 are listed below. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your creative side is enhanced by indulging yourself in as much artistic inspiration (music, art, dance, etc.) as you can fit into your schedule. Bring someone special along. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Take a little restorative time out of your busy life. Go somewhere quiet this weekend. Or just close the door, turn on the answering machine and pretend you’re away. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your advice might be much in demand by family and friends this week. But reserve time for yourself to investigate a project that could have some unexpected potential. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Workrelated issues demand your attention in the early part of the week. Family matters dominate Thursday and Friday. But the weekend is yours to spend as you please. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Try to keep your temper in check as you deal with someone who seems to enjoy showing disrespect. Losing your Leonine cool might be just what the goader hopes to see. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A heated confrontation needs some cool-off time before it boils over. Better to step away than to try to win an argument where emotions overrule the facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone very special in your life
finally sends that reassuring message you’ve been hoping for. You can now devote more time to the tasks you had put aside. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Job pressures begin to ease by week’s end, leaving you time to relax and restore your energy levels before you face next week’s emerging challenges. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your spiritual strength helps calm a friend who might be facing an unsettling change in their life. An offer to help comes from a surprising source. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) By midweek you could learn some surprising facts about an associate that might cause you to reconsider a long-held view about someone in your past. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) One of those rare-for-you darker moods sets in in the early part of the week. But by Thursday, the clouds lift and you’re back doing nice things for people in need. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use that sharp Piscean perceptiveness to reel in more information about a promising offer so that you have the facts to back up whatever decision you make. Wednesday, June 20, 2018 construction of housing, commercial, or industrial buildings. A TIF project here might include a myriad of issues to support and encourage development of various types of construction. The key for the planners is always to be in search of higher EAV’s, and more property tax generation. The challenge for the city planners is to measure the expenditure of funds against the potential for increased property tax revenues in the future. Ideally the TIF project will recoup the monies invested within the life of the TIF district, and provide a new revenue source for years to come. Next time: What costs are eligible for TIF consideration?

Terry Wilkerson, center, president of Rend Lake College, was the featured presenter at a recent Rotary Club of Mount Vernon weekly meeting. He reported RLC continues to remain an excellent option for those wanting a higher education or train to go to work. He further remarked RLC has recently been recognized for its achieve-

“Back To Books” Grants Awarded Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has awarded more than $1.2 million in “Back to Books” grants to 340 public libraries and school districts. These grants help schools and libraries acquire fiction and/ or nonfiction books to improve library collections and engage readers in formal and independent reading. “It is important that our libraries have access to a diverse collection of books for patrons to read for knowledge as well as enjoyment,” said White. “These grants are a great way for libraries to support independent reading and encourage more people to use their local library.” Libraries have submitted applications with topics for books that they will be purchasing with the grant. Topics include Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), graphic novels, large-print books, early literacy and books from lists for participation in state reading programs, such as Read of a Lifetime, Illinois Reads and the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award. The “Back to Books” grants were awarded using federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds provided to the Secretary of State/Illinois State Library by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Grants to States program.

Women United Hosts 2nd Annual Power Of The Purse Fundraiser Auction The Women United of South Central Illinois is proud to announce their second annual Power of the Purse event and they are so thankful to their Event S p o n s o r t h i s y e a r, Crossroads Hospital. The auction will be held on Friday, June 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton located in Mt. Vernon. Tickets are $25 each or $250 per table, and can be purchased by calling the United Way office at 618-242-8000 or online at http://www.uwsci.org/ events/PowerofPurse18 Women United Chair Sandy Sinnett said, “We are excited to bring back the Power of the Purse for a second year, and hope to raise even more awareness for the work being done to help women and children
in our local community including the Casey Care Closet and our scholarship fund for graduating seniors. I have been a member of Women United for over five years now, and helped start the one here in Mt. Vernon, and I’m so proud of the work we do. We will also announce a very special program for women at this year’s event, so we hope you can join us for a night of fun for a good cause.” This year both men and women are welcome to attend. The event will feature a silent auction of some fabulous brand name purses as well as some fabulous items for men as well — a few of which have some goodies inside. While you shop, enjoy a cash bar, a heavy Hors d'oeuvres
buffet featuring two carving stations, and a Dessert Dash! Yes, you will DASH for your dessert for a good cause! Funds raised from this auction will support the club's community projects, scholarships, as well as raise awareness for the WU and their mission to support local women and children. Guests are encouraged to wear fun shoes this year, as the keynote speaker this year is Monte Jo Clark from Kingdom Seed Ministries. Monte Jo will be sharing about their ‘Happy Feet’ ministry and how it helps the kids in the community. Event organizers encourage both men and women to attend this year to learn more about the needs in our community.

SENIOR CITIZENS DAY! Every Wednesday! Save 10%.
What a week, starting with Paul Manafort being sent to jail until a trial this fall. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? In my opinion, this was nothing but a political move made by the hangovers of the real cult in the Obama, Clinton and Soros gang. Paul Manafort, Jr. is an American lobbyist, political consultant and lawyer. His only crime was he joined the Trump campaign team from March 2016 to August 2016, automatically putting him on a hit list. The fact is this 69 year old is in jail where the government has proven no crime. The fact is the prosecutors went back 12 years and found nothing except a 1 minute and 27 second, iffy conversation with a potential witness. Talk about corruption of justice! Really? This seems to be the new standard in this country since Trump upset the apple cart. What is ironic is Hillary Clinton erased 33,000 emails, smashed servers and walks around free. And as for the Benghazi hearings, let me give you some insight. The judge that presided over the above, Judge Weissman, is part of the new judicial system from the past administration. He is a registered Democrat who happened to be a huge Obama supporter, he found nothing wrong with how Benghazi was handled, and he went to Hillary Clinton's victory celebration that wasn't. I will say there's nothing illegal about this judge being an Obama-Clinton guy. But he should have recused himself because of conflict of interest. But while we are on corruption, let's step into another cesspool: The FBI
and DOJ. And on the IG Report, as the liberal media is still saying there's nothing there, I'm here to say the Inspector General's report proves the FBI and DOJ administration has plenty to answer for. The 560-page report released last week plainly shows the bias against Donald J. Trump. On almost every page it proves both agencies were out to get Trump. Both government agencies were all in it for Hillary Clinton, star ting with James Comey, who should be sitting behind bars for sharing classified information, and he admitted that. Comey departed protocol on more than one occasion and will go down as the worst FBI Director in history. But back to the IG report. The unbiased report showed and proved the FBI was leaking to the press while there was an ongoing investigation under Director Comey. At the same time they refused to give any information to Congress but went so far as some agents calling Hillary Clinton President four months before the election. It also proved Hillary Clinton should have been charged with destroying evidence, but she knew she had nothing to worry about; they were in her corner. It proved the agencies were worse than anyone thought they were. The reports went so far as to share emails between Peter Strzok, (who headed up the FBI investigating committee) with his girlfriend, a reporter. The email revealed where both stood. The girlfriend's email said, "Tell me Trump won't be the President." Strzok replied, “No! No! We’re going to stop it.” Peter Strzok has been
demoted but he still works for the FBI. Instead of that, Director Christopher A. Wray should defend the 13,000 FBI agents and get rid of the bad people, as should Attorney General Jeff Sessions. He should be fired as well. However, maybe their playday is coming to an end, especially after the IG Report. The DOJ and FBI has been put on notice by a House Committee to turn over documents, and that time has run out. They want them now. How did the FBI and DOJ weaponize a campaign against a presidential campaign? I think I know. For me, the hardest thing to deal with is the FBI and DOJ are supposed to be the highest order of law in the land. In my opinion, the IG Report isn't about Donald Trump. It's about the rule of law and the gatekeepers going rogue. The end result is this was a campaign that was started to destroy a candidate and get another one elected. And it backfired. And I suspect there's a lot more to come. The collusion wasn't on the Trump side. I believe we're seeing the greatest attack on democracy since 1941 come to the surface. Until next week. Lessons On Foot Washing Yes, foot washing! Jesus often said and did unexpected, surprising, and sometimes even shocking things. He was unconventional, to say the least. He upset people’s apple carts and revolutionized people’s lives. After all he is God! The night before his arrest, trial, and crucifixion for the sins of the world, Jesus gathered his 12 disciples for the Jewish Passover meal,
which Christians now refer to as The Last Supper. Afterwards we have this account, “He riseth from supper and laid aside his garments and took a towel and girded himself. He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.” (John 13:4-20) Jesus then told them that he had set the example for them to follow, to wash one another’s feet. For many
years the early church seemed to follow Jesus’ example literally and observed “Foot Washing” on a regular basis. There are some denominations who observe foot washing as an ordinance of the church. Whether one sees foot washing as something to be done literally or as a symbol of a spiritual observance, we can learn many transforming lessons on Jesus’ example of foot washing. WASHING FEET KEEPS ONE HUMBLE. In the day in which Jesus walked the earth, people didn’t wear shoes and socks. The streets were not paved. Even with sandals, feet became extremely dirty. It was customary for the host of a home to have a servant or someone to wash visitors' feet. It was a humble job. Can you imagine the unexpected shock when Jesus got up from the
table and the Lord and teacher began washing feet? “I have given you an example that you should do as I have done unto you.” (John 13:15) Washing feet, taking a menial position enables one to humble themself. Gospel singer Mike Atkins wrote a book, which was made into a movie, entitled “A Man Called Norman.” God directed Mike to go across the street and minister to his lonely neighbor Norman. One of the first things Norman requested Mike to do was to trim his toenails because he couldn’t reach them himself. Mike humbled himself and followed the example of Jesus. WA S H I N G F E E T FOLLOWS JESUS’ EXAMPLE OF SERVANT HO OD. “Verily, verily I say unto you, the servant is not greater than his Lord.” (John 13:16) Jesus

10) Jesus told Peter that when one is already clean, he only needs his feet washed when he comes in from walking in the world. By the cleansing agent of the blood of Jesus and the Word of God we can keep our soul and heart cleansed. (I John 1:7; Ephesians 5:25-27) WASHING ONE ANOTHER’S FEET IS OBEYING THE LORD AND IS A KEY TO TRUE HAPPINESS. When one humbles themselves and ministers to others in some way, the joy of Jesus fills the heart. “If you know these things, happy are you if you do them.” (John 13:17) WASHING FEET IS THE WAY TO EXPRESS GOD’S LOVE and is the mark of a true disciple. (John 13:34-35) What are some ways that God is directing you to “wash feet”? Jesus said, “Happy are you if you do them.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

said when we do it to the least of these, you’ve done it unto him. A disciple is a servant. WASHED BY JESUS IS A PRE-REQUESET TO BEING HIS DISCIPLE. When Jesus came to Peter, Peter told Jesus that no way would Jesus wash his feet. Jesus replied, “If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.” (John 13:8) The only cleansing agent for the stain of sin is the precious blood of Jesus. “And from Jesus Christ . . . the first begotten of the dead . . . unto him who loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood.” (Revelation 1:5) Have you been washed in the blood? Put your faith in Christ’s work on the cross. (I Peter 1:18-19) WASHING OF THE FEET IS A SYMBOL OF DAILY WASHING OUR HEART AND SOUL from the defilement of the world. (John 13:9-
