EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
Running The Race I have run a few races in my life and I have won a few and lost a few. I know the agony of defeat and thrill of victory. The writer of Hebrews pictures the believer’s journey to heaven as an athlete running a race. It’s the race of life. The race of life is not a sprint, but more like a marathon. The victor’s crown is not necessarily to the swiftest, but to those who endure and cross the finish line. The Holy Spirit reveals the key to running the race of life and gaining the victor’s crown. “Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which does
so easily beset us and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2) Jesus finished his race in victory. How do we finish our race with victory? First — lay aside every weight and sin that would slow you down and entangles you. (Hebrews 12:1) Second — look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Third — endure your cross as Jesus endured his. Run the race with patience and perseverance. Let us focus on the vital key to running the

race victoriously. Keep your eyes on Jesus! DON’T LOOK BACK. Keep your eyes on Jesus and his work on the cross for you. Jack Hayford quotes I Samuel 16:7, “’Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ God is not as concerned with our perfection as he is with our direction.” Lot’s wife looked back at Sodom and Gomorrah and turned into a pillar of salt. Keep your eyes on Jesus and run straight for the finish line. DON’T LOOK AT PEOPLE. People may disappoint you, but Jesus appoints you to be a champion. “More than a conqueror.” (Romans 8:37) After Peter failed the Lord, Jesus met him

at the Sea of Galilee and restored and reassigned him. God turns the pathetic into the prophetic. Peter pointed to John and said, “Lord, what about this man, what shall he do?” Jesus said, “Mind your own business, you follow me!” Don’t look at people, keep your eyes on Jesus. DON’T LOOK AT THE THINGS OF THIS WORLD. The Holy Spirit reveals that the Israelites, wandering in the desert after God delivered them, are an example to us. They had a Rock that followed them, but they chose to put their eyes on the things of this world rather than Christ, the Rock of our salvation, the Living Water. (I Corinthians 10:1-9) They
murmured and complained, and God sent venomous snakes amongst them. (I Corinthians 10:9-13) Keep your eyes on the cross of Christ. (I Corinthians 10:16-17) DON’T LOOK AT CIRCUMSTANCES. I have a friend who came to the Lord as a young man in our children’s ministry. Jeremy is now a sergeant in the US Army. He often tells me of the 10 or 20 mile runs his platoon does with heavy packs on their backs in rain, sleet, snow, heat, and cold. But a soldier must endure. The three Hebrew children went through fire. Daniel was thrown in the Lion’s den. Paul asked who or what can separate us from the love
of Christ? (Romans 8:31-39) Keep your eyes on Jesus. DON’T LOOK AT THE ENEMY. The devil was defeated at the cross. Look to Jesus. “If God be for us, who can be against us.” (Romans 8:31) LOOK TO JESUS! Keep your eyes on him. The Holy Spirit reminds us, “Who for the joy set before him endured the cross . . . and is set down at the right hand of the t h r o n e o f G o d .” (Hebrews 12:2) Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega — the A – Z. He is all you need to run the race and win the victor’s crown of everlasting life. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Health & Fitness SPECIAL SECTION
Encourage A Love Of Physical Activity In Youngsters
Parents who resolve to exercise with their children may find their youngsters more receptive to the daily physical activity they need to promote long-term health. According to the United States Department of He a lt h a n d Hu m a n Services, children and adolescents should engage in physical activity for 60 minutes or more each day. While fulfilling those re-
quirements might not have been a problem for kids who grew up before the dawn of the Internet, nowadays kids are spending less time playing outside and more time on their computers or other devices.
That reality is problematic for parents who want their kids to embrace physical activity thanks to the positive impact that exercise can have on kids’ physical and mental wellbeing. Parents hoping to
instill a love of physical activity in their youngsters may find that taking a more active role by exercising with their kids is an effective way to get them off the couch and away from their computer screens. • Turn errands into exercise opportunities. Many parents take their children along with them when running errands. When such errands don’t necessarily require the use of a car, consider riding bicycles instead. Kids who otherwise don’t enjoy errands may now find them more fun, all the while fulfilling their daily recommended quotas for exercise and spending quality time with their parents. • Include kids in your own athletic pursuits. Parents might not be able to take younger kids along with them to the gym, but that does not mean your youngsters must be excluded from all of your athletic pursuits. If you have any upcoming ath-
letic activities or challenges on your schedule, such as a new recreational sports season or community fun run or 5K, let kids tag along as you train or practice. Parents of adolescents can inquire at their local gyms if they offer discounted memberships to teens. If so, take kids along with you on trips to the gym so they learn the value and benefits of daily strength and conditioning exercises. • Make more time to play. Parents may already have busy schedules, but finding time to play with their kids is a great way to get youngsters to embrace physical activity. Kids might be reluctant to shoot hoops in the driveway if no one is willing to join them, but they will likely be far more willing to do so if mom and dad are willing to play with them. This is not only a good way for parents to ensure their kids get enough exercise, but also a great and fun way for moms and dads to make
time for physical activity. • Recognize that physical activity does not have to mean organized sports. Some kids have no interest in team sports while others do not have the athletic ability to compete after a certain age. Parents who want their kids to exercise more should recognize that there are plenty of ways to be physically active that do not involve organized team sports. Hiking; riding bicycles; swimming at a nearby pool, lake or ocean; and even going for nightly walks are all physical activities that people of all ages and athletic abilities can enjoy. Physical activity is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. While getting kids to put down their tablets and gaming system remote controls may not be easy, parents who resolve to exercise with their children might find their youngsters more receptive to regular physical activity.
How To Treat Muscle Cramps And Prevent Their Recurrence Rare is the athlete who has not had the misfortune of suffering a muscle cramp. Muscle cramps can range from the relatively minor nuisances that can be worked out in a matter of minutes to the more severe cramps that can sideline athletes for an indetermi-
nate period of time. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, muscle cramps are often the byproduct of an overused or injured muscle. When a muscle cramps, that muscle is involuntarily contracting, and that contraction can be very painful. Because ath-

hypothyroidism or kidney failure. Women may suffer muscle cramps when they are pregnant or menstruating. Certain medications may also cause muscle cramps. Men and women concerned about muscle cramps should read the potential side effects of their medications carefully or speak directly with their physicians before taking any medicines that may cause muscle cramps. The online medical resource WebMD notes that medications such as Lasix, a diuretic used to remove fluid from the body, and Crestor, a statin prescribed to adults with high cholesterol, can cause muscle cramps. While dehydration and electrolyte depletion has long been linked to exerciseassociated muscle cramps, researchers have been questioning, if not disputing, that link for many years. A 2008 study from South African researchers published in the British Journal of Sports

Medicine did not support a link between exercise-associated muscle cramps and dehydration or electrolyte depletion. Muscle cramps tend to be painful and can occur in the legs, hands, arms, or abdomen or along the rib cage. When cramps occur below the waist, such as in the calf muscle, it can be difficult to stand up. Treating Muscle Cramps Muscle cramps require immediate treatment so sufferers can alleviate the pain and/or discomfort cramps can cause. Massaging the cramped muscle or applying ice or heat can alleviate the cramp and its associated pain. Calf or hamstring cramps may be alleviated by putting weight on the affected leg and bending the knee slightly. Such cramps may also be treated by sitting or lying down with the affected leg straight out and pulling the foot toward the head. To treat quadriceps cramps (those that occur in the front of the thigh), hold onto to something steady and pull the foot of the affected leg back toward the buttock.
Preventing Future Cramps One of the most effective ways to prevent future cramps is to listen to your body when it’s sending you signals that it is fatigued. Overused muscles are vulnerable to cramps, so remember to include rest in your exercise regimen so muscles have time to recover. If your body feels overtaxed or fatigued before or during a workout, skip the workout or stop it immediately to reduce your risk of cramps or injury. Deficiencies in certain vitamins can directly or indirectly lead to muscle cramps. While the reasons behind the link between thiamine, pantothenic acid and pyridoxine deficiencies and muscle cramps is unknown, speak with your physician about how to include these vitamins in your diet if you have been e x p e r i e n c i ng mu s cl e cramps. Cramps can be painful and derail athletes. Learning to prevent cramps can protect athletes and ensure they are not sidelined from their favorite activities.

Cooking With Lizzie
Centuries ago the peach was so rare and costly a commodity in Europe (it had to be imported by way of Oriental trade routes) that gardeners across the continent developed techniques to grow it themselves. No such problem existed in America. It's a matter of fact Thomas Jefferson proudly wrote to a friend, "We abound in the luxury of the peach, there being as fine here now as I've ever seen anywhere." When I did a lot of canning, July was the month for peaches. When this sweet succulent fruit was ripe enough, then it was off to the kitchen. One secret my grandmother gave me — among a million other lessons on life — was when canning peaches you need to put a peach seed or two in each jar. She said the reason was to keep them from turning brown and keep them as fresh as the day they were picked. And like always, she was right! Some of my favorite recipes are below.
Peach Shortcake 3 cups peeled, thickly sliced peaches 2 T. honey Shortcake: Sweet Biscuit Dough (made with nutmeg)
1 T. lemon juice
1 tsp. granulated sugar
Cream Topping: 1 cup heavy cream 2 T. confectioners’ sugar
618-244-1156
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg Fresh mint sprigs for garnish
In medium bowl, toss peach slices with honey and lemon juice to coat. Cover and refrigerate until serving time. Preheat oven to 425°F. On floured surface, roll out biscuit dough 1/2-inch thick. Cut in six 3-inch rounds with a biscuit cutter. Arrange biscuits 1 inch apart on baking sheet. Sprinkle tops with 1 tsp. sugar. Bake at 425°F for 12 minutes until golden brown. Cool on rack. Whip cream with confectioners’ sugar and nutmeg to stiff peaks. Cover and refrigerate until serving time. To serve, split biscuits in half horizontally. Place bottom halves of biscuits on 6 dessert plates. Reserve a few peach slices for garnish. Spoon remaining sliced peaches atop biscuit bottoms. Top with a dollop of whipped cream and then the biscuit tops. Garnish with spoonfuls of whipped cream, reserved peaches, and mint sprigs. Yield: 6 servings.
Sweet Biscuit Dough 1¾ cups all-purpose flour 2 T. sugar 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg or ground cinnamon 3 T. shortening 2 T. unsalted butter, cut in small pieces 3/4 cup buttermilk
In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spice. Mix well. With a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in shortening and butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in buttermilk to form a soft dough. Turn out on well-floured surface. Knead gently with fingertips about 10 strokes until smooth. Do not overwork dough or biscuits will be tough. Yield: Six 3-inch or fourteen 2-inch biscuits.
Peach-Almond Tart
Pastry: 1¼ cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup ground almonds 2 T. confectioners' sugar 1/4 tsp. salt
6 T. unsalted butter, cut in small pieces 1 egg yolk 3 T. ice water
Filling: 4 cups peeled, sliced peaches 2 T. orange juice 1/2 tsp. almond extract 1 T. cornstarch 3 T. granulated sugar
1/4 cup sliced almonds 1 T. granulated sugar 2 T. unsalted butter, cut in small pieces
Combine flour, ground almonds, confectioners' sugar, and salt in large bowl. With a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in 6 T. butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Whisk egg yolk and water together in small bowl. Add to flour mixture, tossing with a fork until all is moistened. Gather dough into a ball. Form dough into a disk shape. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 30 minutes. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 12-inch circle. Fit into 10-inch tart pan. Trim edges. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour. Preheat oven to 425 ° F. Line pastry with double thickness of foil. Fill with dried beans. Place on baking sheet. Bake at 425° for 15 minutes. Remove foil and beans. Continue baking pastry shell 3 to 5 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on rack. Preheat oven to 375°F. In large bowl toss peaches with orange juice and almond extract. In small bowl, combine cornstarch and 3 T. sugar. Mix well. Sprinkle over peach mixture and toss gently to combine. Arrange peach slices in concentric circles in cooled tart shell. Drizzle with any juice left in bowl. Top with sliced almonds and sprinkle with remaining 1 T. sugar. Dot with 2 T. butter. Bake at 375°F for 45 to 50 minutes until peaches are tender and juices are bubbling near center. Serve warm or at room temperature. Yield: 6 to 8 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. projects may generate increased sales or employment, and as a result increase sales and income tax revenues, but not increase the EAV. Projects such as these may be attractive to city leaders, and no doubt might provide some benefit to the community, but they may not qualify as being TIF-eligible. Caution must be exercised to make certain that "attractive" projects such as these fit within the parameters of a TIF project and actually do what they are intended to do—-increase the EAV. This is my fourth and final article regarding TIF Districts. Hopefully the information presented in these articles has been enlightening. For more details please visit http://www. illinois-tif.com or http:// tifillinois.com. I encourage you to visit these sites, educate yourself, and then attend your local TIF District board meetings. Your tax dollars fund these projects, and your attendance, and attention will let your local officials know you are both interested, and involved in how your community is being managed. Education is empowerment. Be an empowered voter. Thanks for reading.

In the news: • The Supreme Court pick • Midterm elections • The mouthpiece of the extreme Democratic Party Maxine • The tragic shooting at the Capital Gazette Today is a very scary time in America. According to a recent survey, one third of Americans think there could be a second civil war. So sad we haven't learned from history. Yet the differences are so great, with the right being on one side and the extreme left on the other. Please note I said extreme, because I'm the first to say there is a faction of the left that is still in tune and loves this country, and they don't like what's going on any more than the right does. They also find this talk of no borders insane, recognizing that getting rid of U.S, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a kiss of death, and that free education, free housing, and living off the backs of the working class is socialism. And many on the left are as shocked as the right with the 28-yearold nut job Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a far left extremist socialist from the Bronx that just beat out Democrat Joe Crowley in a stunning victory over this potential House Speaker if Democrats

take the house. He's a tenterm legislator who has a brain. This gal stands for everything that would do nothing but destroy this country. I can't believe this is the new face of the Democratic Party. And of course, another goal of the extremists is confiscating guns. All this rolled up in one alone is enough to encourage an uprising of the right. So funny, I was recently reminded by a friend of something George Washington said in his farewell speech. He said he "feared the day would come when people would be more loyal to their party than their country." I fear that day has come. On to the new mouthpiece of the extreme liberals and the Democratic Party, Maxine Waters. Just after the extreme liberal action against Press Secretary Sanders and her family being asked to leave the Red Hen Restaurant in Virginia — which I found disgraceful, but who expects anything sane out of these people? — U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters got on the stump, and through a statement encouraged and incited violence and encouraged protestors to continue booing and harassing Trump supporters. She continued to say let's stay on course, and if you see

Breaking Up Families
Dear Editor, There has been a lot of news reporting about breaking up families of illegal aliens at the Mexican border. News reporters, editors, and Democrats should grasp the concept of the word illegal. One of the main reasons society has government is to enforce law and order.
Without law enforcement we have anarchy. I should not have the right to go anywhere I want, stay as long as I want, and do whatever I want. My car should not be taken from me just because someone else may want it. Those who break the law are the only people responsible for splitting up their families. We should not blame government officials who are doing their job to enforce the laws. Families
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Before you adventurous Arians charge right into those new projects, take a little time to learn where you’ll be going so you can avoid getting lost before you get there. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your time is devoted to career demands through much of the week. But Venus, who rules your sign, might be planning how (and with whom) you’ll spend your weekend. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Don’t be put off by the surprising turn in the way your project is developing. You’ve invested enough time in it to know how to make all the necessary adjustments. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The work week goes smoothly for the most part. But a weekend visit to a place in your past could hold surprises for your future, especially where romance is involved. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A sudden attack of shyness for the usually loquacious Lion could be a sign that deep down you’re not sure enough about what (or whom) you had planned to talk up in public. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Deal with that job-related problem on-site -- that is, at the workplace. Avoid taking it home, where it can spoil those important personal plans you’ve made. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to let those favorable comments about your business
economy this country has ever seen under the current president. And I truly believe there's never been a base in this country like the current Trump base. On to the shooting of five innocent employees of the Capital Gazette in Washington last week. Last Thursday it was business as usual that day at the Capital Gazette. Just like any newspaper office, they were busy trying to hit a deadline. There were usually 11 people in that office. That day six were on vacation; five were killed, ranging from the ages of 65 to 34, much like our staff. All were beloved by their coworkers, family, friends and most likely their community as they sat on different b oards, commissions, members of Chamber of Commerce, as well as other clubs and organizations to help their communities. I simply haven't much to say on this except this has rocked my soul to the core. I keep these fellow reporters, editors and sales reps in my thoughts and prayers, and I ask each of you to join me. God Bless "the freedom of the press," because when we lose that, "we've lost everything." Until next week.
anybody from the Trump cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, or a gasoline station, you get out and create a crowd and you push back on them and tell them t h e y ' re n ot w e l c om e anymore. This woman should be behind bars. This kind of activity is totally illegal. And after a death threat she said, "If you shoot me, you better shoot straight, because there's nothing like a wounded animal." Even Chuck Schumer had an issue with her craziness. And what do the extremists call him? You got it, their favorite word, "racist." Indeed, these are scary, fearful days. On to the new Supreme Court pick, which President Trump says will be picked by July 9. In my opinion it should be "a true conservative." They should be confirmed by the midterm election, which I see as no problem. Even though the Democrats will do all they can to block it, it will get done. And speaking of midTo comment on this or any column terms, as the extreme Dem- in Th e Shopper’s Weekly, please mail ocrats are doing a great job to: Editor, P.O. American prisons do not have family prison cells for incarcerated criminals who have children. These criminals are American citizens. It is obvious that the media and Democrats do not care about breaking up American families. They must believe that illegal alien children are more important than American children. It would be great if intelligent Americans would remember the current media and Democrat theatrics when the time comes to renew their news subscriptions or vote.
dealings be known to those in a position to be helpful. Don’t hide your light; let it shine. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Avoid added pressure to finish a project on deadline by steering clear of distractions. To put it somewhat poetically: Time for fun -- when your tasks are done. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be uneasy about an offer from a longtime colleague. But before you reject it, study it. You might be surprised at what it actually contains. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Deal firmly with a difficult family matter. It’s your strength they need right now. You can show your emotions when the situation begins to ease up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recent dispute with some co-workers might not have been completely resolved. But other colleagues will be only too happy to offer support of your actions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Let go of that Piscean pride long enough to allow someone to help you with a surprising development. That could make it easier for you to adjust to the change.
