What's happening in this country concerns me. Where did all the hate come from? When did the mainstream left start feeling that socialism is the way to go? Socialism is a kiss of death for any country that turns their back on capitalism in favor of socialism. Don't believe me; take a good look at Venezuela. This country went from being in the top seven richest countries — rich in oil, full of opportunity for the people — to a socialist government, and today the people are rummaging through garbage cans to feed their families. I realize Bernie Sanders talks a big story. Check his holdings. He made a fortune with capitalism. He owns not one but two multi-million dollar homes and a $600,000 vacation condo. It damn sure wasn't socialism that got him his fortune. And what happened in New York? They elected a 28 year old from South Bronx, Alexandria OcasioCortez. She claims to be the Democrats' giant killer, a socialist and understudy of Bernie Sanders. Hopefully

As Illinoisans prepare to celebrate this year’s Fourth of July, many are driving long distances to neighboring states to purchase fireworks. This is because Illinois has one of the strictest laws against buying fireworks in the country. Jason Plummer, who is the Republican candidate for State Senate in the 54th District, says that this law

it's her last win. By the way, just a quick history lesson. Hitler was a fascist. Hitler gained control by giving free college eduction to all, passed strict gun control laws, eliminated poverty, created universal health care, free homes for the homeless, jobs for the jobless, brainwashed starting with the youngest children, and created birth control by abortion starting with the Jewish families — with forced abortion! Open up a history book. Do they do that in schools anymore? This was fascism at its finest. However, in some ways it sounds like Bernie Sanders and Cortez. We as a country are traveling down a very dangerous road. We have reached a point that many find it acceptable that a grown man can jerk a MAGA hat off a 16-yearold kid's head and throw a soda in his face; a U.S. Representative can encourage violence against Trump supporters and his Cabinet; our Press Secretary and her family were asked to leave a restaurant just because

she works for the current Trump Administration; an individual climbs the Statue of Liberty on the Fourth of July and ruins the holiday for many and puts in danger the lives of those who are trying to rescue her. And what does she say? She quotes Michelle Obama, her idol, by saying, "When they go low, we go high." Wow! At this point I can see w hy a m a j o r i t y o f Republicans are true blue Tr u m p a n d m a n y Independents are still supporting him. Many conservative Democrats are moving in that direction on many policies. Don't sell the Democratic Party short. Many are not supporting the craziness of the far left. On to the Supreme Court decision. President Trump has said he will announce his pick out of the short list of four on Monday evening at 9:00 p.m. Trump's picks to fill Justice Kennedy's seat are all conservative: Raymond Kethledge, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, and Thomas Hardiman. My pick would

be Amy Coney Barrett, but I don't see it happening. I find it interesting Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) wants Trump to wait until after the 2018 midterm elections, but in 2016 while Obama was in office he wanted to hurry up and pick the Supreme Court Justice nominee before the 2016 midterms. He who talks out of both sides of the mouth, what a politician. The main reason he wants to wait is the Republicans have 50 votes, the Democrats have 49. Guess what, unless one Republican votes with the D e mo c r at s , Tr u mp ' s nominee will be confirmed before midterms! I still remember Durbin saying in 2016 the Supreme Court has eight seats. Unless there are nine, it's a deadlock. I agree we need to get this done now. Because there are eight Supreme Court judges, we need nine to stop a possible deadlock. On to Thailand. As of Monday morning, rescuers had rescued eight young soccer players that were trapped in a cave along with their coach and six other young teammates. These children, the coach and the rescuers are all in my thoughts and prayers. The world has watched this difficult, unprecedented rescue. Until next week. needs to be replaced and that he will push to change it in Springfield. “The consumer fireworks ban in Illinois is a ridiculous policy. In fortysix other states a person can buy fireworks and that includes all of the states that surround Illinois. When Illinoisans simply choose to cross the state border to buy fireworks in Missouri,

Indiana, or elsewhere, our businesses lose customers and our state loses millions in tax revenue. People should be able to buy fireworks for Independence Day and I would support good legislation that allows them to do that,” Plummer said. Persons in possession of illegal fireworks in the state can be subject to criminal

penalties, including fines and jail time. However, with limited resources at their disposal and higher priorities at hand, many law enforcement jurisdictions have opted out of actively enforcing the fireworks ban. Plummer indicated that the fireworks law is just one example of state government overreach. “The nanny-state mentality in Illinois government is at the root of our problems. People should be free from burdensome rules that tell them how to live their lives and run their businesses. We should be worried about solving a real problem, like the slow economy in our state, and not harping on regular folks who just want to shoot off fireworks in their backyard to celebrate our great nation.”

I'm loving my herb garden right now. There's nothing like fresh herbs to enhance great food! My favorite herb mainstays are basil, chives, thyme, sage, rosemary, mint and dill. Above is an easy herb guide to clip and save. Don't be afraid to experiment with herbs. In the meantime, here is one of my favorite recipes using fresh herbs from the garden.

Cook pasta, omitting salt and fat; drain. Put in bowl. Add 2 tsp. olive oil, basil, oregano, salt, pepper; toss well. Heat remaining 2 tsp. oil in a large skillet Fresh herbs add so much flavor to a dish. In this over medium heat. Add tomatoes and garlic; saute 2 recipe, basil, oregano, chives, thyme and parsley turn minutes. Add chives and thyme; saute 1 additional a normal bowl of penne pasta into a perfect main minute. Add broth. Bring to a basil. Cook over high dish. heat 1 minute. Add tomato mixture and parsley to pasta. Toss gently to combine. Sprinkle with cheese 1 lb. uncooked pasta and serve. Special Bicentennial Exhibition At The Illinois State Museum Now Open T he I l l i nois St ate Museum is presenting a major new exhibition in celebration of the state’s 200th birthday which will feature rare and rarely-seen artifacts from the Museum’s 13.5-million-object Illinois Legacy Collection to highlight the dynamic story of Illinois. The “Bicentennial and Beyond! The Illinois Legacy Collection” exhibition opened to the public with a special reception on Friday, June 29. “The exhibition is the most comprehensive of the Museum’s broad collection in the history of the institution,” said Illinois State Museum Director Robert Sill. “Visitors will see a significant portion of their shared story that is being preserved for future generations by the Illinois State Museum, and learn about the individuals who used

these objects and the stories behind them.” The exhibition features artifacts from a variety of disciplines including fine and decorative art, anthrop olog y, archaeolog y, botany, history, geology, and zoology chosen for the unique stories they tell about Illinois. Reflecting the fact that the complete story of Illinois goes well beyond the 200 years since statehood, artifacts will range from 400-millionyear-old fossils to contemporary art. Visitors will see a helmet worn by a World War I soldier; a trunk brought to Illinois by German immigrants in 1852; a core segment from Route 66; a piece of contemporary art created of cowhide; an Olney albino gray tree squirrel mount; and, a portrait miniature done by an itinerant Illinois

artist, among many other treasures. Visitors will explore, discover, learn, and share the history, prehistory, and natural history of Illinois through the featured objects and the fascinating stories behind them. The “Bicentennial and Beyond! The Illinois Legacy Collection” exhibition will be featured at the Illinois St ate Mus eum in Springfield through next February 3. T he I l l i nois St ate Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. The Museum is located at 502 South Spring Street in Springfield on the Capitol Complex. Museum admission: $5 for adults ages 19-64; free admission for youth, seniors, and veterans.

leased. The festival is a family event and there is no admission charge. Visitors will be permitted to "adopt" birds; although there is no longer a fee for the adoptions, donations to the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders would be appreciated. Those who adopt a bird will receive an attractive signed certificate, may be able to release the bird they adopted, and will be notified if their bird is ever recaptured. Making Your Mark For The Kingdom Samuel Clemens was one of the most colorful and gifted writers of the 19th century. A former riverboat pilot, he took his pen name, Mark Twain, from the way boatmen would mark the depth of the river to avoid the shallows rife with sandbars and rocks. Mark Twain made his mark on American literature. Believers in Christ are called to make their mark for the kingdom of God. To make your mark, apply these teachings of Jesus from the Gospel of Mark Chapter 11 to your daily life. THE PRACTICE OF PRAISE. Jesus fulfilled prophecy when he sent two of his disciples into a village to borrow a

donkey for Jesus to ride into Jerusalem in what is referred to as the Triumphal Entry. (Matthew 21:16; Zechariah 9:9) When the throng of people saw Jesus riding into Jerusalem, they hailed him as king and strew their cloaks and palm branches before him as they shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of God.” As Jesus went into the temple, even children began crying out in praise to him. The Jewish leaders became indignant and told Jesus to forbid them. Jesus said, “Yes, have you never read, ‘out of the mouths of babes and nursing infants you have perfected praise.’” (Matthew 21:16; Psalm 8:2) Praising people make their mark for the kingdom of God. Praise gives glory to God,

was done to King Ahasuerus when he could not sleep? Sang to, Feet rubbed, Fanned by servants, Read to 3. Which commandment is, "Thou shalt have 1. Is the book of Jonah no other gods before in the Old or New me"? 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th 4. In Joppa, who was Testament or neither? raised from the dead by 2. In Esther 6, what

enables you to practice his presence, keeps you filled with the Holy Spirit and is a spiritual weapon against the enemy. (Psalm 100; 149; Ephesians 5:18-19) THE POWER OF FAITH. Men and women of faith make their mark for the kingdom of God. Before Jesus went into the temple, he saw a fig tree. Expecting to eat some of its fruit, he saw that it was bare of figs and declared, “’Let no fruit grow on you ever again.’ Immediately the tree withered away.” (Mark 11:18-19) When the disciples saw what happened to the tree, they were amazed. But Jesus wanted to teach them a vital truth, “’Assuredly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only

do what was done to the fig tree. But also, if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea, it will be done. And whatsoever things you ask in prayer, believing you will receive.’” (Mark 11:22; Hebrews 11) Do you want to make your mark for the Kingdom of God? Have faith in God. (Mark 11:22) THE PRIVILEGE OF PRAYER. Jesus went into the temple and saw the money changers and merchants who were taking advantage of the worshippers. He made a whip, overturned the tables, and drove the scoundrels out. He taught them saying, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.’ But you have made it a

den of thieves.” (Matthew 11:15-17) The kingdom of God advances through the prayers of believers. The old hymn, “What a Friend” says, “What a privilege it is to carry, everything to God in prayer.” Scripture teaches us the power of praying in the Spirit. (Ephesians 6:18; Romans 8:16-17; Jude 20) My seven-yearold granddaughter will lay hands on people at church or anyplace and pray the prayer of faith for them. She is making h e r m ar k for t h e kingdom. But don’t forget this truth that I recently read on Facebook, “The purpose of prayer is not just to receive what you asked for, but to strengthen your relationship with God.” When Jesus taught on prayer, he almost

always included the necessity of forgiving others. “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive you your trespasses.” (Mark 11:26) It is a privilege to be involved in the work of God and advancement of his kingdom through prayer. Daily practice these teachings from our Lord Jesus and you will make your mark for the Kingdom of God. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t be Sheepish about asking questions and demanding answers. You not only gain needed information, but also respect for your steadfast search for the truth. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A money problem that shows up early in the week is expeditiously resolved by savvy Bovines who know how to turn a momentary financial lapse into a monetary gain. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s a good time to shed negative energydraining forces and develop a positive approach to handling current, as well as upcoming, personal and/or professional situations. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your urge to do your best on a current task is commendable. But don’t let it become all-consuming. Spend some spiritually restorative time with those who love you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be a good time for all you Leos and Leonas to take your bows for your recent achievements and then go off to enjoy some fun times with your prides and joys. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A negative response to a wellintentioned suggestion could communicate a sense of distrust you might later find hard to refute. Think carefully before reacting. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your loving attention comforts a family member who is feeling a bit

out of sorts. But be careful to prioritize your time so you don’t neglect your work duties. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your curiosity might be resented by some. But those who know you will support your penchant for never settling for less than the truth. So stay with it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A pesky situation from the past recurs, albeit in an altered form. Deal with it promptly before it can go from merely irksome to decidedly troublesome. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t wait too long to submit your proposals after giving them a last look-over. If necessary, you should be able to defend any portion called into question. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A bid to use your workplace dispute-settling skills in another situation is tempting. But be careful: You might not have all the facts you’ll need if you agree to do it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) That sense of self-doubt is so untypical of you, you should have no qualms in shaking it off. Remind yourself of all you’ve done and can do, and then do it again. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to charm others without sacrificing sincerity is what makes people want to follow your leadership. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
