Mt. Vernon Rotary STRIVE Graduates Visit England The Rotary Club of Mt. Vernon was visited in June, 2017 by members of the Rotary Club of Minster on Sea, England. Personal friends of Rotarians Lane and Mary Harvey were so impressed by the STRIVE program — a joint education/leadership program sponsored by Rotary, Rend Lake Collage and the Mount Vernon Township High School — that they made a donation for an all-expense paid trip to England for a STRIVE graduate. The Rotary Club of Mt. Vernon matched the donation. After interviewing potential graduates, Zion McMillian, a Rend Lake College student, and

Javontay Moss, a student at the University of Southern Indiana, were selected for the trip which was organized by Mary Harvey and Rotarian Kay Zibby-Damron. McMillian and Moss, recent guests at a Rotary meeting, reported the two week trip, from which they had just returned, provided many opportunities for learning and entertainment including visiting the Houses of Parliament, many London sights and museums, and a side trip to Belgium and France. They closed by thanking the Rotary Clubs for the travel opportunity afforded them.

ington politics? Vote them out! Then to top it off, there are some saying that Trump's behavior is impeachable. Really? You simply can't fix stupid! But let's move on to the tape, which Michael Cohen — Trump's longtime attorney and friend — recorded without Trump's knowledge, which happens to be reason to disbar Cohen. My question is, how did the media get this said tape — with a discussion on how to pay this alleged participant in this alleged affair — from the FBI? Oh, it must have been a leak, and no one knows! Some will say Donald Trump said it was okay to release it. Can you see an ethical FBI doing that, even if Trump okayed it? So where will all this go? Well, there will be more tapes, more press, and more money spent. And in the end, nothing will happen. It just gives the Democrats something to use to sidestep what's really happening and the positive issues being resolved. But on to another hot story for CNN, ABC, CBS, and the rest of the corrupt media: It's back to the Russian investigation. Now it's being reported that Donald Trump, Jr. lied, that he did meet with the Russians, and that President Trump knew it. And who says so? Well, of course, the law attorney Michael Cohen. Yes, the one and

only, Donald Trump's former attorney. This alleged meeting was supposed to take place at the Trump Tower and then they went to a fundraiser together. President Trump wasn't around. So where does all this go? Again, nowhere. In the end, if the moment comes that the President does find out that his son met and went to a fundraiser with a Russian, so what! But let's look at (in my opinion) possible collusion, tampering and illegal activity. The fact is the attorney that is now handling Michael Cohen's legal problems is none other than Lanny Davis, the very same attorney that was Bill and Hillary Clinton's longtime personal friend, confidant, and attorney for over 30 years. He's the same one that steered Bill Clinton through his antics with Monica Lewinski. He also served as special console to the White House, was a lobbyist, and was the spokesman for Clinton and White House matters concerning campaign finance investigations and other legal issues. In other words, he was in bed (so to speak) with the Clintons. And I'm supposed to take anything to heart and believe it, where the Clintons are involved. Folks, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out! The sad thing is people like U.S. Rep. Adam Shifty (Oh, I mean Adam Schiff ), of course, a member of the Democratic Party in California, by pushing this new agenda of the Party is hanging the party out to dry. I don't see how the house of cards (Obama, the Clintons, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and others) can keep going. It's time they start crumbling! But for years I've wondered how the Clintons are not behind bars. Oh, the webs they weave Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Shepherd’s Psalm

we consider the Shepherd’s Psalm found in Psalm 23. THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD speaks of RELATIONSHIP. A good shepherd had a loving relationship with his sheep. Jesus referred to himself as the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for his sheep. (John 10:11) He is the door/gate into the eternal sheepfold. The Lord Jehovah, “the self-existent one,” desires a personal relationship with you. “My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me.” (John 10:27-28) He knows you by name. You need not fear when the Lord is your shepherd. I SHALL NOT WANT speaks of SUPPLY. Sheep under the care of a bad shepherd are in want. It saddens me to see

The world is in turmoil and endeavors to subject our soul to stress, fear, and depression. The enemy of your soul will try to strike fear into your heart. I saw a Facebook post that maintains that 70% of stress could be relieved with the scent of oranges. If that were true, I think I would be handing out oranges on Sundays. I have good news — there is something tried and true that will relieve your stress, heal your soul, and defeat fear. It is absolute trust in the love and care of the Good Shepherd — the Lord Jesus Christ. David, an experienced shepherd, gave us a revelation of the Lord his Shepherd. Consider this line by line insight of the Good Shepherd’s care as

chapter of the New Te s t a m e nt ( K J V ) ? Romans 13, Galatians 2, Ephesians 5, Titus 1 3. At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, whose name was 1. Is the book of Haggai translated as ...? Ruth, in the Old or New Dorcas, Sarah, Esther 4. What young man Testament or neither? went to sleep and fell out 2. What is the middle

animals abused or neglected. The Lord is the Good Shepherd. He supplies all our needs. (Philippians 4:19) Many times he delights in blessing us with surprises that some call “Christmas in July.” God revealed himself to Abraham as Jehovah Jireh, the Lord who provides. The greatest provision is God’s sacrifice for sin. Jesus laid down his life for the sheep by death on a cross. Why be in want if the Lord is your shepherd? Believe his promise, “He that spared not his own son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:22) HE MAKES ME LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES speaks of REST. Sheep that are fearful or

3

attacked by pests will not lie down and rest. The Good Shepherd gives rest and fellowship. “Come unto me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28-29) It’s a “rest unto your soul.” It’s a rest of faith. (Isaiah 26:3-4) I had a t-shirt that said, “It’s all good.” It’s all good when the Lord is your Shepherd. HE LEADS ME BESIDE STILL WATERS speaks of REFRESHMENT. Sheep will not drink from a fast-flowing stream. Jesus declared, “If any man thirsts, let him come unto me and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38) John gives us this postscript, “But this spoke he of the

Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive.” (John 7:39) Don’t be dehydrated and weak. Come and drink deeply of this living water the Good Shepherd offers. HE RESTORES MY SOUL speaks of HEALING. Shepherds use oil on wounds to bring healing. Isaiah prophesied of Christ the healer. “For he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon him and by his stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) The Good Shepherd desires to restore spirit, soul, and body. The ladies at Primrose Hill Adult and Teen Challenge Center make a beauty and health lotion called

“Restore.” The dictionary defines restore as, “to give back, to put back into use or service, to put or bring back into a former or original state, to put back again in possession of something.” David declares, “He restores my soul.” (Psalm 23:3) John, the beloved, reveals God’s will of restoration, “Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.” (III John 2) The Good Shepherd provides wholeness for your body, soul, and spirit. Is the Lord your shepherd? Come to him today and find rest for your soul.” (Matthew 11:28) (To be continued.) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Memorial Ride Sponsored By Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association

Cooking With Lizzie

Grilled Lamp Chops & Veggies There's nothing better than a simple, savory barbecue that features rosemary lamb chops with grilled fresh veggies like pattypan squash, red and yellow peppers, corn on the cob, or whatever happens to be your favorite veggie. Small rosemary sprigs garnish each chop. I also use a larger sprig to brush on the basting sauce. Enjoy. Shopper's Weekly Staff Photo

On July 28, the parking lot of Roadhouse HarleyDavidson in Mt. Vernon was filled with those who had gathered to show support to the family of the l at e S S G S h aw n R . Holbrook through a Memorial Ride in his name. Holbrook, who served in the USA 160th Soar Night Stalkers, had suffered from

PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome), which led to his death. The ride was sponsored by Chapter 24-5 of the C o m b a t Ve t e r a n s Motorcycle Association, whose mission is to support and defend those who have defended our country. “Through awareness campaigns like this, we can help

reduce the number of veterans’ suicides from the effects of PTSD,” stated Media Relations Officer David “Bandit” Hess. The Memorial Ride included six presentations and rallies between Mt. Vernon and Anna; all proceeds go to the Marion VA Substance Abuse/PTSD Awareness Programs.

Annual KFVS12 Summer Heartland Blood Drive The American Red Cross and KFVS12 are encouraging area blood donors to join them at the annual summer blood drive Aug. 10 and 11 at several convenient locations in Missouri and Illinois. Two of these blood drives will be held at Times Square Mall, located at 42nd Street & Broadway in Mt. Vernon, IL. The first drive will be held from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 10, and the second drive will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 11. The KFVS12 Summer Heartland Blood Drive

comes as the Red Cross faces an emergency blood shortage and is issuing an urgent call for blood and platelet donors to give now so patients can continue to receive the lifesaving treatment they need. Right now, blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. More donations are immediately needed to help replenish the blood supply. Everyone who attempts to donate will receive a special-edition Red Cross Missing Types t-shirt com-

pliments of Papa John’s, while supplies last. The Red Cross launched the Missing Types campaign nationwide on June 11 as part of an international movement in an effort to recruit new blood donors, and those who had not given recently. During the Missing Types campaign, the letters A, B and O — the main blood groups — disappeared from brands, social media pages, signs and websites to illustrate the critical role every blood donor plays. “This blood drive comes at such a critical time for us,” said Garry Allison, director of donor recruitment for the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region. “While Missing Types has been a successful campaign, the summer still presents many challenges. We are so grateful to KFVS12 for their continued support, and I hope the community comes out once again to help those patients who need it most.” Donors of all blood types are urgently needed to give now to help ensure blood is available for patients in need. Those who donated blood earlier this summer may be eligible to donate again. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days, and double red cells can be donated every 112 days. To donate blood simply download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org and entering the sponsor code KFVS12 or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All

blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health histor y questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, from a computer or mobile device. get started and learn more, visit RedCrossBlood.org/ RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit RedCross. org or CruzRojaAmericana. org, or visit them on Twitter at @RedCross.

Strategies That Can Help Build Strong Immune Systems A strong immune system can go a long way toward ensuring one’s overall health. But bolstering one’s immune system is no small task, as even medical researchers admit there is still much to learn about the links between lifestyle and immune function. The Harvard Medical School notes that a strongly functioning immune system requires balance and harmony. So it stands to reason that a highly unhealthy lifestyle will compromise the immune system, but it’s also worth noting that pushing the body too hard in the other direction also can adversely affect immune function.

Researchers continue to study the potential links between immune response and variables such as diet, exercise, age, and psychological stress. Though studies are ongoing, the Harvard Medical School notes that the immune system is bolstered by various strategies associated with healthy living. • Don’t smoke. Smoking is linked to a host of diseases and ailments, so it’s no surprise that it also compromises the immune system. The National Cancer Institute notes that cigarette smoke contains high levels of tar and other chemicals, which compromise the immune system’s ability to

effectively combat infections. The effects of smoking on the immune system are both immediate and longterm. Smokers’ immune systems may not be able to fend off common infections like the common cold as effectively as the immune systems of nonsmokers. And over time, as smokers keep smoking, their immune systems will continue to weaken, which the NCI says makes them more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. • Eat a healthy diet. There is no magical food or foods that can strengthen the immune system to a point where infection is impossi-

Arthritis Linked To Another Condition People who see dermatologists for the skin condition psoriasis should not take the presence of joint aches and pains lightly, as the two things might be connected. The National Psoriasis Foundation notes that psoriasis is a precursor to psoriatic arthritis in 30 percent of patients. Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the rate of skin cell reproduction. People with psoriasis may experience redness, itchiness and raised bumps (plaques) of skin on various areas of their bodies. Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic form of arthritis that typically occurs in people with skin psoriasis, but also can be present in those without the skin condition, but particularly among those who have relatives with psoriasis. The American College of Rheumatology says that psoriatic arthritis typically affects the large joints, especially the lower extremities, distal joints of the fingers and toes and the back and

boosting their immune systems will no doubt find many products claiming to do just that. The Harvard Medical School urges consumers to be skeptical of such products, many of which make dubious claims that are not rooted in recognized scientific research. The immune system remains a mystery in many ways. But several healthy strategies may help people bolster their immune systems and potentially reduce their risk of infection.

IS YOUR BODY

TRYING TO TELL sacroiliac joints of the pelvis. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of psoriatic arthritis are crucial to relieving inflammation and preventing permanent joint damage. Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis are similar to rheumatoid arthritis, gout and reactive arthritis. Doctors will rule out other symptoms that may be indicative of those conditions. The American C ollege of Rheumatology also indicates that psoriatic arthritis is typically blood test negative. The diagnosis is typically made by a rheumatologist after reviewing a clinical history and performing a physical exam.

Doctors will need to assess symptoms before deciding on a course of treatment. Mild cases may respond to over-the-counter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen. However, antirheumatic drugs and newer biologic drugs may be prescribed to treat more aggressive cases of psoriatic arthritis. Corticosteroid injections can be useful for swollen joints, and surgery may be necessary to repair badly damaged joints. Individuals who suspect their arthritis may be linked to psoriasis can first speak with a dermatologist or primary care physician.

How To Find Time For Fitness Many adults admit to having little or no time to exercise, and statistics support the notion that men and women aren’t exercising enough. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, only 21% of adults ages 18 and older met the physical activity guidelines for aerobic and musclestrengthening activity (The World Health Organization recommends that healthy adults age 18 – 64 do at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week, while also performing muscle-strengthening activities involving the major muscle groups two days per week.) Commitments to work and family can make it hard to find time to visit the gym or exercise at home. But the benefits of regular exercise are so substantial that even the busiest adults should make an effort to find time to exercise. The following are a handful of ways to do just that. • Embrace multitasking. Instead of plopping down on the couch to watch television, bring a tablet to the

ble. However, the Cleveland Clinic notes that a balanced, healthy diet that includes a mix of vitamins and minerals plays a role in strengthening the immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain a bevy of vitamins and antioxidants that help the immune system fight off potential infections. Many people bemoan the absence of fresh fruits and vegetables at their local grocery stores during certain times of the year. But the Cleveland Clinic notes that manufacturers typically free frozen fruits and vegetables at peak ripeness. That means frozen fruits and vegetables provide similar nutrition to fresh fruits and vegetables during those times of year when foods are not in-season. • Exercise regularly. Like a healthy diet, routine exercise provides a host of benefits, and one such benefit is

its impact on the immune systems. The U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that the precise relationship between exercise and immune system function remains a mystery. Some researchers suspect that physical activity may flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, reducing one’s risk of getting a cold, flu or other illness. Another theory suggests that exercises causes changes in white blood cells, which the immune system uses to fight disease. These exercise-related changes may make it possible for the cells to detect illnesses earlier than they would if the body was not exercised regularly. While it’s important to note that these are just theories, the Harvard Medical School suggests that it’s reasonable to consider moderate regular exercise an important component of a healthy, immune-boosting lifestyle. • Don’t buy the hype. Men and women interested in

gym or the basement and stream a favorite show while on the treadmill or the elliptical. When running errands around town, ride a bicycle or walk instead of driving. • Cut down on screen time. A 2016 report from The Nielsen Company revealed that the average adult in the United States spent more than 10 hours each day consuming media. That includes time spent using smartphones, tablets, personal computers, and other devices. By reducing that screen time by just one hour per day, adults can create enough free time to meet the WHO-recommended exercise requirements. • Make it a group effort. Involving others can make it easier for adults to find time to exercise. Instead of hosting work meetings in a conference room, take the meeting outside, walking around the office complex while discussing projects rather than sitting stationary around a conference table. At home, take the family along to the gym or go for nightly post-dinner walks around the neighborhood instead of retiring to the living room to watch television.

• Redefine date night. Adults who can’t find time for exercise during the week can redefine date night with their significant others. Instead of patronizing a local restaurant on Friday or Saturday night, enroll in a fitness class together. Parents can still hire babysitters to look after their youngsters while they go burn calories instead of packing them on at local eateries.
