him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6) The Hebrew word for paths conveys a circle. In Palestine you still see these trails in the wilderness that lead in a big circle. A circle symbolizes eternity. The Good Shepherd leads us to eternal life. (John 3:16) But the path leading to righteousness is narrow. Jesus said, “Enter by the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life and there are fe w w h o f i n d it .” ( Matt he w 7 : 1 3 - 1 4 ) Someone said that Jesus is the most narrowminded man that ever lived. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, made it very clear, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) He leads us “in paths of righteousness.” Only by faith in Christ and his finished work on the cross can we

The Shepherd’s Psalm (Part 2) The 23rd Psalm, called by many the Shepherd’s Psalm, has brought comfort and hope to countless people down through the ages. David, who was a shepherd in his youth before becoming the king of Israel, drew from his experience of shepherding sheep to make the analogy of the shepherd as the Lord his God who cares for the sheep, the children of God. In part 2 we’re picking up the narrative with Psalm 23:3. HE LEADS ME IN PATHS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS speaks of GUIDANCE. Without the guidance of a shepherd, sheep would wander around in the wilderness, aimlessly and lost. Isaiah prophesied of our spiritual condition and the need of Christ the Good Shepherd. “All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, everyone to his own way; and the Lord has laid on

be counted righteous and be enabled to live a righteous life. (I Corinthians 1:31-2:1-2) He leads me. Our part is to follow. We have God’s promise. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) FOR HIS NAME’S SAKE speaks of PURPOSE. We glory not in our own flesh, strength, cleverness, or goodness. It is in Christ and Christ alone. “As it is written, ‘he who glories, let him glory in the Lord.’” (I Corinthians 1:31) What is our purpose as believers? It is ultimately to bring glory to God. (Revelation 5:1113) Have you lost your way? Return to the Lord, God has a future and a hope for you. (Jeremiah 29:10-14) Jesus is the shepherd who leaves the 99 sheep in the wilderness to search for the one lost sheep until he finds it. (Luke 15:47) EVEN THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VA L L E Y O F T H E SHADOW OF DEATH speaks of TESTING. (Psalm 23:4) As we walk through this earthly life we will go through many shadows and valleys. That is life. Death eventually

comes to all. Recently our oldest son, who lives in Kentucky, messaged me about a graveside funeral he was preparing to conduct for three individuals. The son had committed suicide, a couple days later the mother died after a battle with cancer, and a few days after that the father died of a broken heart. Grief cannot be minimized, but the Good Shepherd conquered death and gives us the comfort, hope, and promise of victory over death, hell, and the grave. (John 3:16) Valleys are a test of faith. Will you trust God or give in to despair and fear? A recent post on Facebook says, “No matter how you feel – get up . . . dress up . . . show up . . . and never give up.” David’s trust in his shepherd inspired him to declare, “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” (Psalm 23:4) The presence of the Good Shepherd trumps fear of evil. He promises to be with you, to protect and provide all you need. The shepherd leads. Are you following? (Matthew 11:28) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Community First Bank Chosen As A Finalist For “CBAI’s Award For Excellence And Innovation” doing,” said Brandon Bullard, Director of Business Development at Community First Bank. “We had customers making donations to the campaign daily, everything from $5 to $1000, families, businesses, individuals, everyone we asked jumped in to help us reach our goal.”

Community First Bank of the Heartland, headquartered in Mt. Vernon IL, has received notice that they have been chosen as a finalist for CBAI (Community Bankers Association of IL) “Award for Excellence and Innovation” according to Andrea Cusick, Senior VP of Communications for CBAI. “Our institution was founded on serving our local area because local matters,” said Jo David Cummins, President and CEO of Community First Bank. “When we discussed doing something to honor our last ten years as Community First Bank, it was a natural that we chose to do so by finding a way to give back to our area. Unlike national fundraising campaigns, 100% of the funds raised will support Jefferson County causes,” he added.

“Thanks to the generosity of CFB, St. Mary High School youth were able to attend t he Nat iona l Catholic youth conference in Indianapolis last fall. It was an experience they will cherish for a lifetime. Only through donations like this from CFB can we continue to grow tomorrows leaders and teach them what giving back is really all about” said Brett Heinzmann, Principal of St. Mary School. Community Love was so successful that it spurred on a new campaign for 2018 called “Local Matters” where CFB highlights local businesses and events in the communities they serve. Everything from cookouts to concerts, backto-school bashes and community swim nights all will be highlighted this year by Community First Bank. “We’re trying to be a strong partner to the communities we serve, and that means a grassroots effort to make those communities better for the people who live, work and play here.” Bullard said. The Annual meeting of C ommunity B ankers Association of Illinois will be this September, with the “Award for Excellence and Innovation” announcement coming at a luncheon on the 29th.

Community Love Day Community First Bank’s founding charter was established in 1906, making it one of the oldest institutions in Jefferson County. However, it has existed as Community First Bank since January 1, 2008. Since that time, it has grown into Jefferson County’s second largest bank, based on holdings and the only bank serving Jefferson County exclusively. The culmination of the campaign was the 10-year anniversary celebration of the bank becoming CFB, with a free BBQ party at the main branch in downtown Mt. Vernon, and 10 check presentations to representatives from the agencies chosen to benefit. Those local agencies include CASA, Lifeboat Alliance, Jefferson County Sports Authority, YMCA, St. Mary School, The Amy Center, Angels on Assignment, Park Avenue Food Pantry, Toys for Kids and Young Marines.

Positive Impact The Community Love campaign, which ran for 3 months last fall, began as a fund-raising effort to help improve the quality of life in the region, culminated with donations to 10 area non-profit organizations totaling $30,000. “There was a great response from the community when they heard the plans and what we were

Marketing Plans Strategic Planning Implementing To Reach Your Goals Branding and Re-Branding

Call Bud Davis

Cathy is off and running, so this week's column is being written by our friend Rich Lowry, editor of the National Review.

The Battle Over Socialism Is Joined

It's begun. We are having a debate over socialism. Not over whether it's fair to call Democrats socialists. Not over whether socialism has been good for Venezuela or some other faraway, unfortunate country. But socialist policies right here in the United States. The press attention to a new study of the costs of "Medicare for all," or universal health coverage paid for by the government that goes much further than Obamacare, is a sign that it is a live issue. Popularized by Bernie Sanders, Medicare-for-all is not just a fringy left-wing talking point anymore. It's a plank of a growing element of the Democratic Party. A raft of prospective Democratic presidential candidates has endorsed the policy, while about a third of the Democratic members of the House have joined a caucus devoted to it. The good news for Sanders and Co. is that, in the wake of the failure of an attempted

Let’s talk. Call 1-618-508-1796. No Charge for Just Talking.

No idea or company too large or too small!

GOP repeal of Obamacare, the health care debate is clearly moving left. The bad news is that Medicare-for-all is still a completely batty, politically unserious idea. The new study of its costs, from the conser vative Mercatus Center, concludes that Medicare-for-all would increase federal spending by almost $33 trillion during the first 10 years. The study notes that "it would be less expensive to the federal government to triple all projected appropriations," and that "doubling all currently projected federal individual and corporate income tax collections would be insufficient to finance the added federal costs of the plan." Supporters of the idea impeached the credibility of the findings based on their source, yet a study by the centrist Urban Institute in 2016 found exactly the same thing. The costs aren't merely a theoretical matter. Vermont, the home of Bernie Sanders, abandoned a single-payer proposal after the Democratic governor concluded that it wasn't fiscally sustainable. Despite its Democratic supermajorities, California gave up on a single-payer proposal last year for the same reason — the projected cost was twice as much as the state budget. The upside is t hat Medicare-for-all purports to

save on overall health care spending by ratcheting down payments to health care providers. Medicare does indeed pay less to hospitals than private insurers, but it's not clear that this would be sustainable if hospitals could count on only Medicare-level payments. Since Medicare-for-all would eliminate insurance premiums and provide health care free of charge, it would create an incentive for more usage, and more health care expenditures. All of this is why the natural gravity in a singlepayer system is toward bruteforce price controls and rationing to control costs. President Barack Obama had to promise that if you like your health care you can keep it because any change to private insurance is so toxic. Medicare-for-all would replace the employer-based system entirely for more than 150 million people. It wouldn't matter how much they liked their insurance — it would be gone as a matter of definition. Republicans need to continue to develop and push their own ideas to reduce health care costs and adjust to the new reality where socialism doesn't simply represent a laugh line, but a battle that needs to be won. Simply Strawberries "Send Strawberry Shortcake at once to the table. Serve with it, if possible, a pitcher of cream. Milk can not be substituted, better to eat it plain than to mix milk with berries." Sarah Tyson Rorer (1902)

TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING?

You would never cover up the Check Engine light in your vehicle; it’s time to stop covering up your symptoms and enjoy true health and wellness. At Healing Hands Wellness

and Chiropractic,we specialize in restoring health, especially auto-immune disorders. Your wellness plan will be tailored specifically to your needs, and each patient receives the highest level of individual care.

Very possibly, we get our passion for strawberries and cream from our British heritage, but strawberry shortcake is strictly an American passion.

Healing Hands

Mary Lincoln's Griddle Shortcake 1/2 tsp. salt, scant 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar

Wellness & Chiropractic, PC

2 cups flour, measured, then sifted 4 T. (1/2 stick) sweet butter 1 cup sour cream

www.HealingChiro.net

2801 Broadway St., Suite C Mt. Vernon, Illinois 62864 Across the Street from McDonald’s

Stir salt, baking soda and cream of tartar together and sift with flour. Combine flour and butter together into consistency of oatmeal by rubbing together quickly and gently with fingers. Add sour cream, cutting into dough with knife, until it is just blended. Scrape dough out onto well-floured board, pat it into a flat cake, turn it over onto floured surface, and roll out gently until it is 1/2 inch thick. Cut into rounds or wedges and set each on preheated and lightly greased griddle, over low heat. "Watch them and turn them, that all may be browned alike." When well puffed up, set a sliver of butter on top of each and gently turn over. When browned on the other side and done (judge by cutting one partly open), serve immediately. When well puffed up, set a sliver of butter on top of each and gently turn over. When browned on the other side and done (judge by cutting one partly open), serve immediately. To serve properly, set sliced, sweetened strawberries on the table in one bowl and cream (clotted, whipped or plain) in another. Each eater should split a shortcake with his fingers (not cut it) and lavish the halves with strawberries and cream. The traditional method still works just fine: top the bottom half with strawberries and moisten well with their juice, top with the other half, then heap on more strawberries and a generous dollop of cream.

Freshened Strawberries

The simplest strawberry recipes simply "freshen" their flavor by soaking them for a while in some tartflavored medium whose sharpness points up the strawberries' taste. This method is different from a maceration in that the juices of the strawberry aren't mingled with the freshening medium. Because of the simplicity of the flavors involved, it is important that only fresh ingredients be used.

Strawberries with Lemon and Mint

1 quart strawberries, washed and hulled Juice of 1/2/ lemon, strained

1 T. superfine sugar 5 fresh mint leaves, torn into tiny bits

Toss berries in lemon juice, sugar and mint in large bowl. Let stand a few hours, covered, in refrigerator, to allow flavors to mingle.

Strawberries in Orange Juice

1 quart strawberries, washed and hulled Superfine sugar

Juice of 3 oranges

Combine strawberries and orange juice; add just enough sugar for a pleasing taste of sweetness. Let stand a few hours, covered, in refrigerator, to allow flavors to mingle.

Strawberries in Wine

Sinus disease – do you know what your nose knows? Each year approximately 37 million Americans suffer from sinus disease. What is more, Americans spend around $5.8 billion each year on health care costs associated with sinusitis, making this disease an enormous public health issue. Sinus disease is not just one entity but many.

Cut strawberries in half; larger ones should be quartered. Mix ingredients together and let flavors marry a few hours in a cool place — but no cooler than a temperature at which you would serve the wine by itself (not – except on the hottest days – in the refrigerator).

Dr. Prateek Srinet, Otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) invites local residents (18 years and older) to a FREE community health presentation to learn more about sinus disease and the misconceptions regarding treatment– including surgery.

Variation, With Peaches: Substitute 1 pint strawberries, washed and hulled, and 4 ripe peaches, peeled and cut into chunks for the 1 quart of strawberries.

Dr. Srinet will speak about:

1 quart strawberries, washed and hulled Juice of 1/2 lemon, strained

1/4 cup superfine sugar 1 cup dry red wine

Frullato de Fragole

2/3 cup milk 2/3 cup strawberries, washed and hulled

1 tsp. superfine sugar 1/4 cup crushed ice

Combine these ingredients in a blender or food processor fitted with the steel blade and whirl just until the ice has melted and everything is cold and frothy.

•What is sinusitis? •Medical and surgical treatment options •Minimally invasive sinus surgery •Newer advances in sinus management

Fraises Ritz

1 cup heavy cream Sugar Vanilla

1/2 cup wild strawberries 1/2 cup raspberries 1 quart strawberries, washed and hulled

Whip cream, sweetening with a little sugar and flavoring with a drop or two of vanilla. Either through a sieve or in a food processor, crush together wild strawberries and raspberries (if wild strawberries are unavailable, substitute a few of the ripest cultivated ones). Fold crushed berries into whipped cream and serve over strawberries. ***

vase. One has a ruyi scepter; the others are helping each other to the top. The famille rose decoration could be several hundred years old or new. The color and clever three-dimensional figures helped the vase sell for $1,476, its decorative value. If it were 300 years old, it would sell for much more. *** Q: My Rookwood mug is old, dated 1884. Cranch? A: E.P. Cranch was a lawyer in Cincinnati who also was working for the Rookwood pottery from its beginning, as well as a poet, a storyteller and an artist. Cranch used the words and often humorous pictures of activities described in ballads and folklore. He remembered a ballad sung to him by Noah Webster's nephew 50 years earlier and wrote it down and illustrated it. Cranch seems best-known for his Rookwood pieces decorated with the Uncle Remus stories. His art appears on beer mugs, pitchers, jugs, plates, bottles and vases, most made in the 1880s. Although they are very different in style than most early Rookwood, with colored glazes and realistic decorations of flowers or perhaps Indian portraits, Cranch's work sells quickly. A 6 3/4-inch-high Cranch jug sold recently for $1,610. It was decorated with scenes and the words of the poem "Three Wise Men of Gotham Went to Sea in a Bowl." *** CURRENT PRICES Toy bubble pipe, figural bowl, "Popeye" head, smoking a pipe, sailor hat, curved stem, white plastic and paint, 1950, 6 inches, $20. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A longtime situation starts to move into a new phase. The question for the uncertain Lamb right now is whether to move with it. Facts emerge by midmonth to help you decide. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A talent for organizing your priorities allows the Divine Bovine to enjoy a busy social life and not miss a beat in meeting all workplace and/or family commitments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) What began as a dubious undertaking has now become one of your favorite projects. Your enthusiasm for it rallies support from other doubters-turnedbelievers. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Accept the help of friends to get you through an unexpectedly difficult situation. There’ll be time enough later to investigate how all this could have happened so fast. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Change is a major factor for the Big Cat through midmonth. Be prepared to deal with it on a number of levels, including travel plans and workplace situations. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not like all the changes that have begun to take place around you. But try to find something positive in at least some of them that you can put to good use. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s unsettling experience could create more prob-

lems if it’s not handled with care and love. And who’s the best one to offer all that? You, of course. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It might not be the right time for you to start a new venture. But it’s a good time to start gathering facts and figures so you’ll be set when the GO! sign lights up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sagacious Sagittarius should have no trouble deciding between those who can and those who cannot be trusted to carry out a workplace commitment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Surprise, surprise. It looks as if that one person you once thought you could never hope to win over to your side suddenly just might choose to join you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might have to set aside your pride for now and accept a change that isn’t to your advantage. Cheer up. There’ll be time later to turn this around in your favor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your creative self emerges as dominant through midmonth. This should help you restart that writing or arts project you’ve left on the shelf for far too long. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of encouraging others by example to come out from the shadows and enjoy life to the fullest. © 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.
