Delicious Health Spinach Salads Toss spinach into a salad, then use your imagination and you have a delicious, healthy salad! One of my favorites as a kid was wilted spinach salad, and yes, I know most kids turn their noses up at spinach. I was lucky; I had a mom that insisted I try everything, and most of the time, if I tried it, I liked it!

Wilted Spinach Salad

1 lb. fresh spinach 1/3 cup water 4 slices bacon 1 (2-oz.) jar diced pimiento, drained 3 T. finely chopped onion 2 T. sugar 1/3 cup white wine vinegar Remove stems from spinach; wash leaves thoroughly, and pat dry. Tear into bite-size pieces, and place in large salad bowl. Cook bacon in skillet until crisp; drain, reserving drippings. Crumble bacon; set aside. Saute onion in drippings. Add vinegar and remaining ingredients; bring to a boil. Immediately pour over spinach; toss gently. Sprinkle with bacon, and serve immediately. Yield: 4 servings.

Arranged Spinach Salad

1 lb. fresh spinach 1/2 cup sour cream 1 cup large-curd cottage cheese 2 to 4 T. sugar 2 hard-cooked eggs, cut into wedges 2 T. white vinegar 1 cup (4 oz.) shredded mozzarella 2 tsp. prepared horseradish cheese 1/2 tsp. dry mustard 1/2 cup walnut pieces, toasted 1/4 tsp. salt 2 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled 1/4 tsp. pepper Remove stems from spinach; wash leaves thoroughly, and pat, dry. Tear into bitesize pieces; arrange on individual salad plates. Arrange cottage cheese and next 3 ingredients on top. Sprinkle with bacon. Combine sour cream and remaining ingredients; stir until sugar dissolves. Drizzle dressing over salad. Yield: 4 to 6 servings.

Spinach Sesame Salad

1 lb. fresh spinach 3 T. lemon juice 1/2 head iceberg lettuce, tom 1 T. honey 1 green onion, sliced 1 T. sesame seeds, toasted 1/3 cup olive oil Remove stems from spinach; wash leaves thoroughly, and pat dry. Tear into bite-size pieces. Combine spinach, tom lettuce, and sliced green onion in a large bowl, and set aside. Combine olive· oil, lemon juice, and honey in a jar; cover tightly, and shake vigorously. Pour dressing over salad just before serving, and toss gently. Sprinkle salad with toasted sesame seeds. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

COMFORT ME speaks of DISCIPLINE. The Good Shepherd loves us too much to ignore the wanderings of the sheep. He will use the crook of his shepherd’s staff to pull the sheep closer to himself or rescue the sheep from danger. If need be, he will use his rod to chase off the predators. Discipline is necessary for us to mature in obedience. (Hebrews 12) The rod and staff speak of Go d’s Word. (II Timothy 3:16; Ephesians 6:17) In the longest chapter in the Bible (Psalm 119), David emphasizes the great value of God’s Word. To be healthy and happy, the sheep must come under the discipline of God’s Word and the Good Shepherd. YOU PREPARE A TABLE BEFORE ME IN THE PRESENCE OF MY ENEMIES speaks of HOPE. (Psalm 23:5) The shepherd goes before the sheep and prepares the pasture by ridding it of poisonous and noxious weeds and lurking predators. You can feast in peace and the hope of feasting in the kingdom of heaven. You have the Good Shepherd’s promise. “Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and

they may have life and they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep and that’s exactly what Jesus did when he died on the cross to pay the penalty of sin. (John 10:11) He arose victorious over death, hell, and the grave. You need not fear evil or the evil one when you are in the shepherd’s fold and live in his presence. In the Soldier’s Psalm David gives us the Lord’s promise of protection. Psalm 91 reveals the secret place of the Most High where he is our refuge and fortress. Claim his promise by faith. FOR YOU ARE WITH ME speaks of FAITHFULNESS. You can count of the Good Shepherd’s faithfulness. Jesus said, “I will never leave or forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5-6) He was with the three Hebrew children in the fiery furnace. (Daniel 3:12-30) He will always be with you. YOUR ROD AND YOUR STAFF THEY

The Shepherd’s Psalm (Part 3) You were never created to live depressed, defeated, g u i lt y, c on d e m n e d, ashamed, or unworthy. You were created to be health and happy. The Psalmist David tells us where you belong, “We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalm 100:3) In Psalm 95:7, he uses an even more intimate term, “We are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.” (Psalm 95:7) Jesus is the door into the sheepfold. (John 10:9) Enter the sheepfold through Jesus and live a victorious, healthy, and happy life. We continue to see the care of the shepherd in Psalm 23. I WILL FEAR NO EVIL speaks of PROTECTION. (Psalm 23:4) Sheep are defenseless without the protection of a shepherd. Jesus reveals the evil intentions of the evil one. “The thief comes not but to steal, to kill, and to destroy. I have come that

have them sit down to eat and will come and serve them.” (Luke 12:37, 40) What a blessed hope! YOU ANOINT MY HEAD WITH OIL speaks of CONSECRATION. (Psalm 23:5) The shepherd would apply an oil concoction on the sheep’s head to keep away flies and pests. Oil is also a type or symbol of the Holy Spirit. At the inauguration of kings and priests, they are anointed with oil poured on their head to set them apart for service. The Holy Spirit empowers, sets apart, and sanctifies the believer for service. The sweet anointing oil in the Old Testament was made of special ingredients that symbolized the character of Christ. (Galatians 5:22) The sheep would be miserable during fly season without the anointing oil and so would the believer. Ask the Lord to anoint you with the fresh oil of the Spirit. (Luke 11:13) The Holy Spirit will seal you, set you apart for service and empower you. If you have a problem, need or fear, remember the Lord is your Shepherd. You can go to him anytime. He cares for you. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

The Shoppers Weekly – Mt. Vernon Area

Last week must have been a light news week. The main topic on Meet the P re s s w a s O m a r o s a M a n i g a u l t - Ne w m a n , f o r m e r a s s i s t a nt t o President Trump, and her new book Unhinged set to hit the book stores in October. Some of you might remember Omarosa from the show, The Apprentice, when she heard those dreaded words the first time

from Trump, "you're fired," and then the second time in the White House Situation Room from General John Kelly. The reason he cited for the dismissal was integrity violations. Gosh, imagine that! Since then we find out she secretly taped the conversation of her firing without John Kelly's knowledge or permission. Wow! In my opinion, that says it

all about her integrity. She has none! Since the loss of her job she's gone around bad mouthing President Trump, and to top it all off, she writes a book. What I find amazing is before the dismissal, the President was wonderful, according to Omarosa. One of her most recent comments was, "I'm living the dream because of Donald Trump." And now

he's a bigot and a racist, according to Omarosa. Yet two days after Charlottesville last year she was on FOX News defending him. How can anyone trust her? Like I said, it was a light news week! On to the 2018 midterm elections on November 6, just 12 weeks away. Generally, the party in the White House loses seats in midterm voting, and I'll be the first to say, with the majorities in both Houses of Congress to protect, the GOP needs to work overtime. However, at this time we've seen Republican candidates overcome the historical midterm narrative. Despite the liberal establishment's best efforts, Republicans have won seven out of the last nine special elections since President Trump took office. Although the U.S. House seat in Ohio was undecided until all provisional ballots were received and absentee ballots were counted, it was finally decided that seat will go to Republican State Senator Tray Balderson, who finally declared victory. As s ome c a l l t his Congress a do nothing Congress, I think it's important to point out in the last 20 months the House of

Wednesday, August 15, 2018 Representatives has passed more than 700 bills. There are many good things happening in Washington that are improving the quality of lives across our country, everything from improving health care and treatment for those who are facing illness, struggling with addiction or caring for aging, disabled loved ones, to the Right to Try Act signed into law by the President in May. This allows terminally ill patients to access experimental treatments that could potentially prolong or save their lives. The sad part is, even though the recent Republican accomplishments would be well accepted on both sides of the aisle, the biased liberal major news networks like CNN, ABC, CBS, and MSNBC aren't putting these positive news stories out front. In a prime example of a positive news story, recently 55 American soldiers' remains were returned from North Korea to their homeland and families for identification and proper burial. The most coverage this story got from any liberal network was less than two minutes, if at all! I believe the average American voter — again on both sides of the aisle — is

Back To School Safety F

ollowing back to school safety tips helps your child stay safe as a new school year begins. Going back to school is an exciting time for children as they look forward to entering the next grade level, seeing their friends and meeting new people. Yet it can also be a time of unforeseen dangers. By teaching children basic back to school rules and tips regarding their safety, they enter this exciting time with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe while enjoying this special time and throughout the school year. Safety Tips for Traveling To and From School Whether your child walks to school, rides a bike, takes a bus or you drive them in a car, reviewing the following safety tips with them makes traveling to and from school a safer experience. Walking to School — Tips for Parents If you feel your child does not have adequate pedestrian skills to walk to school, either walk with them until you are confident in their ability or make alternate arrangements for getting them to and from school. • If a child is young or entering a new school, walk the child to school until you are comfortable with them walking by themselves. • Practice the route with your child if they are young or new to the school. • Make sure the route your child takes is safe and has a crossing guard at intersections. Walking to School — Tips for Children • Never take a short cut

through a wooded area. Stay on the route you practiced with your parents. • Walk to school with a friend or a group of friends. • Wearing light or brightly colored clothing increases your visibility to drivers.

Traveling by School Bus • Never step off the curb until the bus comes to a complete stop. • Always use the seat belt if the bus if equipped with them. • Do not move around in the bus. Stay sitting in your seat. • When leaving the school bus stay in view of the driver and always cross the street in front of the bus. • Even though traffic should stop for a school bus, always check both ways before crossing the street. Riding a Bike to School • Always wear an approved helmet when riding a bicycle. • Wearing clothing that is bright and colorful makes it easier for drivers to see you. • Learn hand signals and use them. • Ride a bike on the right hand swide of the road traveling in the same direction as the traffic. • Always stop for stop signs and follow the rules of traffic lights. • Learn and follow the rules of the road. • Do not listen to your iPod mp3 player or other music device. Always pay attention to the traffic. Riding to School in a Car • Whether you are driving your children or carpooling, make sure each child is securely strapped into their seatbelt. Younger children need the appro-

priate car seat or booster seat for their age or size. • Have each child exit the car using the door on the curbside so they are not stepping out of the car into traffic. • Do not leave the school until your child, or all those in the carpool, are safely inside the school building. Backpack Safety Backpacks have become a staple of back to school accessories. They are great for carrying books and other essential school items and are available in a wide variety of sizes, colors, designs and styles. Yet these useful bags are potentially harmful if not used correctly causing possible shoulder or neck injuries, back pain and muscle and joint strains. The following tips on backpack safety help reduce the chance of injury: • When a backpack is fully loaded, it should not weigh more than 15 to 20

percent of the child's body weight. • Never carry a backpack over one shoulder using only one strap. Always wear a backpack using both shoulder straps. • If a backpack has a waist strap, use it. • Choose a backpack with wide straps. The best choice is a backpack with a padded back and padded straps • Use all of the compartments in the backpack to distribute the weight of the contents more evenly. More Back to School Safety Tips The following are a few general back to school safety tips: • Talk to your children and reinforce the rules of stranger danger. • Make sure not to pack foods for lunch or snacks that spoil quickly. • Talk to your child about bullies and bullying. Explain to them what to do if a situation arises.

getting wise to this one sided reporting, but I also believe that it's very important over the next two months to get the truth out by showcasing the success and accomplishments of the current Congress to the American people. And if that happens, it will absolutely be a red wave. Now with all that said, let me say there are many good Democrats that — like many Republican candidates — put their love of country first, not party. Political parties should not be cults, but in my opinion, there are those that think that way. This kind of candidate should be voted out! R e c e nt l y, I h e a r d someone in a conversation refer to President Donald Trump as "your President." I found that comment disgusting. Former President Barack Obama was my President for 8 years. Did I believe he was a good President? I did not. However, I never said to anyone, "Obama is your President!" These are the people that are the dividers. Until next week.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There might still be some uncertainty about the decision you made. But a quick check of the facts should reassure you that you’re doing the right thing. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The tidy Taurean needs to be a little more flexible about accepting some changes to those carefully made plans. You might be pleasantly surprised by what follows. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Consider stepping away from your concentrated focus on your new project for a bit so you can get some perspective on what you’ve done and where you plan to take it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The understandably angry Crab might not want to accept the reason why someone might have tried to hurt you. But at least you’ll have an insight into why it happened. LEO (July 23 to August 22) There might be some facts you still need to know before leaping onto center stage. Best to move carefully at this time so that you can observe what’s happening around you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to expand your outlook by getting out and around, whether you do some long-range traveling or just explore the great things to see closer to home. itself out. Meanwhile, the decisions you made on your job begin to pay off quite nicely. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your job situation brightens thanks to all your hard work. Now, spend some time repairing a personal relationship you might have neglected for too long. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Aspects favor action in the workplace. Line up your facts and show your superiors why you’re the one they’re looking for. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your hard work pays off on the job. Personal relationships also can benefit from more of your time and attention. Spend the weekend with loved ones. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Early feedback on your project might be disappointing. But don’t be discouraged. Use it to make needed adjustments, then submit it to your superiors again. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Flattery could lure the otherwise sensible Fish into making an unwise decision. Be careful. All that praise might be an attempt to reel you in before you can learn the facts. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful sense of who you are. You are a shining example to others, helping them believe in themselves and what they can do.

ake Hoult is a Country Singer/Songwriter, born and raised in central Illinois. After taking several trips with his grandparents to Branson, Missouri, Jake fell in love with music. Jake began his musical journey at the age of four, performing at local talent shows, churches, and small events. Today, at 21 years old, Jake has had the pleasure of performing in front of audiences from all over the U.S. including venues in Branson, Missouri and Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to doing country music, Jake also performs contemporary Christian/ gospel music. This gave him the opportunity to open for a number of popular Christian artists such as: Finding Favour, 7th Time Down, KUTLESS, Natalie Grant, and Matthew West. Ja ke is const ant ly

working hard at his music career. He is currently attending Greenville University to attain his Bachelor's degree in Music Industry. Jake's high energy show includes a little bit of everything from country music (new and old), to classic rock 'n' roll to pop. His

I always make it a point in every show to honor my Lord and Savior and this great nation," says Jake. When not in the studio making new music, Jake is constantly working on new material and traveling on the road with his band. Performing alongside Jake, playing the fiddle and singing lead vocals, is Mikayla Joy. Mikayla, like Jake, is an up and coming artist with her own music as well. this often dark and mysterious superstar never translates into a dour, over-serious experience on stage. Instead, Furry delves deep into the Cash catalog, shining a spotlight on every corner of this legend-from his rockabilly beginnings to his flirty duets with wife June Carter Cash, expertly recreated in the Walkin’ With Cash performances by Jan Daily. It would be hard to portray Johnny Cash and not be somewhat playful and heartwarming. “He had a wicked sense of humor,”

I started my tribute to The Man in Black,” Furry remembers. Along with Scott Wattles, as Elvis, The Blue Suede Crew became an almost instant regional draw and even recorded at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, TN, birthplace of the mythical careers of both Cash and Presley. Perhaps, inevitably, Furry’s star continued to rise and he subsequently established a stand-alone project devoted to The Man in Black called Walkin’ With Cash. The group promptly established its own network of fans across the area. “I try to keep it as true to the original as possible,” Furry says. “Cash’s musical career was over a 50 year span and we cover as much as possible, from the memorable 1954 hit single “Hey Porter” to “Rusty Cage” (from the Grammy winning 1996 project “Unchained”) and all the heavy hitters in between.”

Furry says. “I’m there to have a good time and it shows.” For the enthusiastic, lateblooming Furry, there’s no other way to perform. Furry originally unveiled his imitation of Johnny Cash on a lark and a new passion was born. He was a percussionist and backup vocalist for a local Elvis tribute band, The Blue Suede Crew. “The lead singer needed a break to change costumes during the show and asked if I knew anyone that could sing like Johnny Cash. I surprised him by belting out “Folsom Prison Blues” and that’s how

eith Furry is well aware of the complexities surrounding Johnny Cash, in fact, he embraces them. “One of my favorite lines to describe Johnny Cash is from the book Cash by Rolling Stone magazine: "Sinner, Saint, Rebel, Voice of Protest, Man of Faith," says Furry, leader of the tribute band Walkin’ With Cash. Hailed as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Cash had that rarest of crossover appeals, having earned induction into the Rock n Roll, Country and Gospel Halls of Fame. Furry captures those intricacies with a fan’s eagerness and a musician’s skill. From his note perfect trembling baritone voice to his all black outfits, every detail rings true during a Walkin’ With Cash show. Of course, much of Cash’s music, particularly toward the end of his stellar career, focused on moral questions and the search for redemption but Furry’s rendition of
