Dedication Of Addition At City Of Centralia Animal Shelter The new addition and renovation of the existing structures were dedicated last Saturday, August 11 at the City of

Centralia Animal Shelter at 846 Woods Lane. City Manager Dan Ramey pointed out that the new addition has

allowed for more rooms to allow cats and dogs to be better seen and thus more adoptable as well as providing a better quality of

life for them during their time at the shelter. He also noted the number of animals the shelter euthanizes has

been greatly reduced. Pictured (L to R) at the dedication ceremony are Councilman Bill Smith, Animal Control officer

B obby Patton, City Manager Dan Ramey, Shelter Manager Kim Abbott, and Mayor Tom Ashby.

Wednesday, August 15, 2018 coverage this story got from any liberal network was less than two minutes, if at all! I believe the average American voter — again on both sides of the aisle — is getting wise to this one sided reporting, but I also believe that it's very important over the next two months to get the truth out by showcasing the success and accomplishments of the current Congress to the American people. And if that happens, it will absolutely be a red wave. Now with all that said, let me say there are many good Democrats that — like many Republican candidates — put their love of country first, not party. Political parties should not be cults, but in my opinion, there are those that think that way. This kind of candidate should be voted out! R e c e nt l y, I h e a r d someone in a conversation refer to President Donald Trump as "your President." I found that comment disgusting. Former President Barack Obama was my President for 8 years. Did I believe he was a good President? I did not. However, I never said to anyone, "Obama is your President!" These are the people that are the dividers. Until next week.

Last week must have been a light news week. Some of you might remember Omarosa from the show, The Apprentice, when she heard those dreaded words the first time from Trump, "you're fired," and then the second time in the White House Situation Room from General John Kelly. The reason he cited for the dismissal was integrity violations. Gosh, imagine that! Since then we find out she secretly taped the conversation of her firing without John Kelly's knowledge or permission. Wow! In my opinion, that says it all about her integrity. She has none! Since the loss of her job she's gone around bad mouthing President Trump, and to top it all off, she writes a book. What I find amazing is before the dismissal, the President was wonderful, according to Omarosa. One of her most recent comments was, "I'm living the dream because of Donald Trump." And now

he's a bigot and a racist, according to Omarosa. Yet two days after Charlottesville last year she was on FOX News defending him. How can anyone trust her? Like I said, it was a light news week! On to the 2018 midterm elections on November 6, just 12 weeks away. Generally, the party in the White House loses seats in midterm voting, and I'll be the first to say, with the majorities in both Houses of Congress to protect, the GOP needs to work overtime. However, at this time we've seen Republican candidates overcome the historical midterm narrative. Despite the liberal establishment's best efforts, Republicans have won seven out of the last nine special elections since President Trump took office. Although the U.S. House seat in Ohio was undecided until all provisional ballots were received and absentee ballots were counted, it was finally decided that seat will go to Republican State Senator Tray Balderson, who finally declared victory. As s ome c a l l t his Congress a do nothing

Congress, I think it's important to point out in the last 20 months the House of Representatives has passed more than 700 bills. There are many good things happening in Washington that are improving the quality of lives across our country, everything from improving health care and treatment for those who are facing illness, struggling with addiction or caring for aging, disabled loved ones, to the Right to Try Act signed into law by the President in May. This allows terminally ill patients to access experimental treatments that could potentially prolong or save their lives. The sad part is, even though the recent Republican accomplishments would be well accepted on both sides of the aisle, the biased liberal major news networks like CNN, ABC, CBS, and MSNBC aren't putting these positive news stories out front. In a prime example of a positive news story, recently 55 American soldiers' remains were returned from North Korea to their homeland and families for identification and proper burial. The most

The Centralia Ciphers Winners Announced

Rick McDonald is proud to announce that the Ghost In A Graveyard treasure hunt, “ The C entralia Ciphers” has come to a close. Father and son treasure hunting team Chris and Ed Jones came forward with the hidden item, which was a near life size copy of the Declaration of Independence that Rick had hidden on public land somewhere in Centralia. Chris and Ed were just two of hundreds of local treasure hunters that were trying to unlock the secrets of the cipher that Rick published in the Shoppers Weekly on May 30, along with a series of weekly clues.

The actual prize was kept at Jim’s Coin Shop in Centralia and was a chest containing rare coins and bills along with various gift certificates donated by local merchants. Rick said, “I would like to thank all the wonderful sponsors of this hunt. We couldn’t have had such a great hunt and prize without their help and participation.” Sponsors included Submitted Photo Firestone Tires, Country Financial, Jim’s Coins, Maco Pictured (L to R) are Ed Jones, Chris Jones, and Elevator, The Tan Sanctuary, Rick McDonald. The 2nd annual job fair the City of Centralia held on June 20, 2018 was an overwhelming success according to City Manager Dan Ramey. According to Ramey the 1 month post-job fair survey indicates: 1. 107 Job Placements achieved a job by the employers after one month of the job fair 2. 30 local employers registered 3. 28 employers attended 4. 25 of the 28 employers that attended responded to the survey 5. Employers rated the job fair 4.56 (out of 5) average score 6. 80% of the responding employers found good job candidates 7. 72% of responding employers had hired people within the first month Mayor Tom Ashby stated the employers had 246 immediate job openings to be filled at the beginning of the job fair of which 107 people have already been hired out of the 260 job seekers hoping to find their first job or looking for a new career direction. Mayor Ashby stated that many jobs are still avail-

able and urged people to visit the City’s website at www. centralia.works. Ashby stated the City will continue to promote to get new employers into the area but will also continue to work with existing employers to retain and hire new employees. This year’s job fair was a great success which connected talented workers with employers looking to hire. Event organizers were happy that they doubled the number of employers attending this year’s event and they look forward to sponsoring another job fair in 2019. “This year, we also gave away a laptop computer to one of the job seekers that attended the job fair,” said Mayor Ashby. The winner was Taylor Hirsh and the laptop will be presented to her at the City Council meeting on Monday, August 13 at 6:00 p.m. As a result of her attendance at the job fair, Taylor was hired as a CNA at Fireside House. “The job fair was an excellent event and Taylor has quickly become an outstanding employee for us,” said Kathy Berck, Administrator for Fireside House of Centralia.

Both Taylor and Fireside House will be recognized by Mayor Ashby at the City Council meeting. Kala Lambert, Economic Development Director, indicated that the local employers will still have approximately another 300+ full and part time job openings during and by the end of the year that employers wish to get filled. Ramey stated that there is no “silver bullet” in economic development and agreed with Mayor Ashby that our area is in need of qualified individuals and the City will continue to attempt to attract skilled and qualified individuals back to our town by new housing, new streets, renovated and new parks, and yearly expanded parades and festivals, as well as have a great new high school and Kaskaskia College. Greg Sutton with Tec Services, who assisted with the event, indicated that post fair responses from employers indicated they felt moving to the larger gym area in the Rec Center was nice to give everyone more room. He stated comments were all complimentary of

being one of the best job fairs ever attended and employers were complimentary of how organized the event was and how helpful the staff was to help job seekers including helping them with resumes, applications, or computers. Ramey states that the job fair each year is the finalization of many site visits that Economic Development Director Kala Lambert and himself or Mayor has had with local employers discussing their needs. He states that the city has urged the employers to consider working with the high school to get part time employees that may continue full time after they graduate if they decide not to attend college. Ashby said he is pleased that the City of Centralia took one day to help get 107 jobs to individuals in our community again this year and wants to thank all the employers who attended and set up booths as well as thank Tec Services, City Manager Ramey, Economic Development Director Kala Lambert, and the entire City staff for their hard work and commitment in making this year’s job fair a huge success.

will be open for touring until 4:00 p.m. The current building saw its first graduating class in 1942 and has experienced many changes over the years. All graduates are invited to come and see those changes; your old locker might not be recognizable. Those attending are encouraged to enter the gym from either the north or south lobby entrances, sign the guest book and put on a name tag because “age happens.” There will be limited seating on the floor for those unable to navigate the steps. Tables on the gym floor will have memorabilia displays categorized by graduating years. Anyone who has an item of interest they would like to display can contact Nena (Williams)

Ben Franklin said “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Sandoval High School Class of ’78 isn’t planning a revolution, just an all class reunion. What started out to be a 40th reunion snowballed into a community event drawing the interest of hundreds of Sandoval graduates from a c r o s s t h e c o u n t r y. Volunteers from several classes have been meeting since early Spring to pull the event together. The anticipated event is scheduled to take place Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the Sandoval High School. The hallowed doors will open at 1:00 p.m. when the event will kick off with a short program in the Merkelback Gymnasium followed by refreshments in the Cafetorium. The building

The Shepherd’s Psalm more abundantly.” (John 10:10) A good shepherd (Part 3) lays down his life for the

sheep and that’s exactly what Jesus did when he died on the cross to pay the penalty of sin. (John 10:11) He arose victorious over death, hell, and the grave. You need not fear evil or the evil one when you are in the shepherd’s fold and live in his presence. In the Soldier’s Psalm David gives us the Lord’s promise of protection. Psalm 91 reveals the secret place of the Most High where he is our refuge and fortress. Claim his promise by faith. FOR YOU ARE WITH ME speaks of FAITHFULNESS. You can count of the Good Shepherd’s faithfulness. Jesus said, “I will never leave or forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5-6) He was with the three Hebrew children in the fiery furnace. (Daniel 3:12-30) He will always be with you. YOUR ROD AND YOUR STAFF THEY COMFORT ME speaks of DISCIPLINE. The Good Shepherd loves us too

You were never created to live depressed, defeated, g u i l t y, c o n d e m n e d , ashamed, or unworthy. You were created to be health and happy. The Psalmist David tells us where you belong, “We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalm 100:3) In Psalm 95:7, he uses an even more intimate term, “We are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.” (Psalm 95:7) Jesus is the door into the sheepfold. (John 10:9) Enter the sheepfold through Jesus and live a victorious, healthy, and happy life. We continue to see the care of the shepherd in Psalm 23. I WILL FEAR NO EVIL speaks of PROTECTION. (Psalm 23:4) Sheep are defenseless without the protection of a shepherd. Jesus reveals the evil intentions of the evil one. “The thief comes not but to steal, to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and they may have it

much to ignore the wanderings of the sheep. He will use the crook of his shepherd’s staff to pull the sheep closer to himself or rescue the sheep from danger. If need be, he will use his rod to chase off the predators. Discipline is necessary for us to mature in obedience. (Hebrews 12) The rod and staff speak of God’s Word. (II Timothy 3:16; Ephesians 6:17) In the longest chapter in the Bible (Psalm 119), David emphasizes the great value of God’s Word. To be healthy and happy, the sheep must come under the discipline of God’s Word and the Good Shepherd. YOU PREPARE A TABLE BEFORE ME IN THE PRESENCE OF MY ENEMIES speaks of HOPE. (Psalm 23:5) The shepherd goes before the sheep and prepares the pasture by ridding it of poisonous and noxious weeds and lurking predators. You can feast in peace and the hope of feasting in the kingdom of heaven. You have the Good She phe rd’s prom is e. “Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat and will come and serve them.” (Luke 12:37, 40) What a blessed hope! YOU ANOINT MY HEAD WITH OIL speaks

Back To School Safety F

ollowing back to school safety tips helps your child stay safe as a new school year begins. Going back to school is an exciting time for children as they look forward to entering the next grade level, seeing their friends and meeting new people. Yet it can also be a time of unforeseen dangers. By teaching children basic back to school rules and tips regarding their safety, they enter this exciting time with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe while enjoying this special time and throughout the school year. Safety Tips for Traveling To and From School Whether your child walks to school, rides a bike, takes a bus or you drive them in a car, reviewing the following safety tips with them makes traveling to and from school a safer experience.

Walking to School — Tips for Parents If you feel your child does not have adequate pedestrian skills to walk to school, either walk with them until you are confident in their ability or make alternate arrangements for getting them to and from school. • If a child is young or entering a new school, walk the child to school until you are comfortable with them walking by themselves. • Practice the route with your child if they are young or new to the school. • Make sure the route your child takes is safe and has a crossing guard at intersections. Walking to School — Tips for Children • Never take a short cut through a wooded area. Stay on the route you practiced with your parents.

of CONSECRATION. (Psalm 23:5) The shepherd would apply an oil concoction on the sheep’s head to keep away flies and pests. Oil is also a type or symbol of the Holy Spirit. At the inauguration of kings and priests, they are anointed with oil poured on their head to set them apart for service. The Holy Spirit empowers, sets apart, and sanctifies the believer for service. The sweet anointing oil in the Old Testament was made of special ingredients that symbolized the character of Christ. (Galatians 5:22) The sheep would be miserable during fly season without the anointing oil and so would the believer. Ask the Lord to anoint you with the fresh oil of the Spirit. (Luke 11:13) The Holy Spirit will seal you, set you apart for service and empower you. If you have a problem, need or fear, remember the Lord is your Shepherd. You can go to him anytime. He cares for you. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

• Have each child exit the car using the door on the curbside so they are not stepping out of the car into traffic. • Do not leave the school until your child, or all those in the carpool, are safely inside the school building. Backpack Safety Backpacks have become a staple of back to school accessories. They are great for carrying books and other essential school items and are available in a wide variety of sizes, colors, designs and styles. Yet these useful bags are potentially harmful if not used correctly causing possible shoulder or neck injuries, back pain and muscle and joint strains. The following tips on backpack safety help reduce the chance of injury: • When a backpack is fully loaded, it should not weigh more than 15 to 20 percent of the child's body weight. • Never carry a backpack

over one shoulder using only one strap. Always wear a backpack using both shoulder straps. • If a backpack has a waist strap, use it. • Choose a backpack with wide straps. The best choice is a backpack with a padded back and padded straps • Use all of the compartments in the backpack to distribute the weight of the contents more evenly. More Back to School Safety Tips The following are a few general back to school safety tips: • Talk to your children and reinforce the rules of stranger danger. • Make sure not to pack foods for lunch or snacks that spoil quickly. • Talk to your child about bullies and bullying. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There might still be some uncertainty about the decision you made. But a quick check of the facts should reassure you that you’re doing the right thing. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The tidy Taurean needs to be a little more flexible about accepting some changes to those carefully made plans. You might be pleasantly surprised by what follows. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Consider stepping away from your concentrated focus on your new project for a bit so you can get some perspective on what you’ve done and where you plan to take it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The understandably angry Crab might not want to accept the reason why someone might have tried to hurt you. But at least you’ll have an insight into why it happened. LEO (July 23 to August 22) There might be some facts you still need to know before leaping onto center stage. Best to move carefully at this time so that you can observe what’s happening around you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to expand your outlook by getting out and around, whether you do some long-range traveling or just explore the great things to see closer to home. itself out. Meanwhile, the decisions you made on your job begin to pay off quite nicely. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your job situation brightens thanks to all your hard work. Now, spend some time repairing a personal relationship you might have neglected for too long. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Aspects favor action in the workplace. Line up your facts and show your superiors why you’re the one they’re looking for. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your hard work pays off on the job. Personal relationships also can benefit from more of your time and attention. Spend the weekend with loved ones. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Early feedback on your project might be disappointing. But don’t be discouraged. Use it to make needed adjustments, then submit it to your superiors again. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Flattery could lure the otherwise sensible Fish into making an unwise decision. Be careful. All that praise might be an attempt to reel you in before you can learn the facts. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful sense of who you are. Centralia Rotary President Tina Suarez and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital President Damon Harbison The speaker at Centralia Rotar y Club's July 30 me e t i ng w a s D amon Harbison, the new president of SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. Mr. Harbison spoke about the Master Facility Plan that is being implemented at SSM Health St . Ma r y ’s Ho s pit a l , Centralia. Harbison is no stranger to this part of Illinois—he grew up in Irvington (born at St. Mary’s Hospital) and graduated from Centralia High School. One of his first jobs was as a food service worker at St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia. He is also a graduate of Kaskaskia College (AASRadiologic Technology), and continued his academic career at Washington University (St. Louis) obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Radiation, and then received his MBA from SIU Edwardsville. Prior to his return to Centralia, Harbison was at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital (St. Louis) where he most recently served as Chief Operating Officer/Vice President of Operations. He was very active in his community in Missouri, but he wanted an opportunity to give back even more and this job at St. Mary’s in Centralia, he says, was the answer to that prayer. He is active in the local Chamber of Commerce and plans to join Rotary as well. One of Harbison's goals is to find a way to get young people to return to the community after they have left to get a higher education. Harbison then laid out the Master Facility Plan for the

hospital. The renovation encompasses almost the entire first floor and includes a brand new surgery pavilion, expanded/renovated outpatient services, and modernized public and support areas. They’ve expanded Radiology to include a new MRI (large bore) and a second, faster CT machinethe same technology you would find in St. Louis. The Lab has increased square footage, new equipment, and better work flow so there will be better turn-around in getting results (they will be moving in to this new lab at the end of August). The surgery addition/expansion will allow the surgical department to move out of the lower level and be directly adjacent to surgical prep and recovery area, as well as adding endoscopy to the department. The improvements in the ER renovation and expansion project includes creating all private treatment rooms; a rapid medical examination unit with five bays for treatment of more minor illnesses and injuries; two dedicated rooms for treatment and containment of infectious diseases; two rooms specifically for the needs of children and their families, and specialized “safe” rooms for patients going to the E.R. with behavioral health conditions. The interior and exterior of the hospital buildings will be more “spa like.” The whole plan stresses a threepronged, relationship-based care approach which means taking care of the “self,” the team and the patient/family.
