Love At First Flight Homegrown Centralia area balloonist Andrew Robinson returns every year for Balloon Fest, but he now lives in Peoria and works for Caterpillar, Inc. as an engineer. Andrew recently became a pilot late last year with the help of Jim and Teressa Phelan who live in Lincoln, which is less than an hour away for Andrew. They originally met at Centralia Balloon Fest years ago and he chased for their balloon, Good Greeph. Before that he chased for Pat Newell and Newellʼs balloon Sunshine Fun Too. Andrew took his first balloon ride at age 6, and from that time on it was love at first flight. Finally, came the ultimate satisfaction about a week ago when, as a pilot, Andrew Robinson had the pleasure of taking his grandfather, Kenny Robinson up over the lake, and then on an early morning flight he took his Dad, Gary Robinson.

Local Boy Competes In Sr. Honda Championship Ten-year-old Braxton Davis, son of Ben and Chelsey Davis of Centralia, recently continued his quest for the Sr. Honda Championship as he had a two-day race weekend. Last Saturday six cars started and he finished third in his feature. In Sunday's heat number one Braxton started seventh and fin-

The Centralia Rotary Club met on August 20. Jack Mays introduced the speaker, J.D. Chapman of JD’s Emporium to talk about the beginnings of Rock N’ Roll, what it is and where it came from. Rock N’ Roll is a mixture of Gospel, Blues, Big band, etc. and is one of America’s true art forms. Many people think that Elvis invented Rock N’ Roll but it had a long history before his monster hit Heartbreak Hotel in 1956. It started all the way back to the Ragtime craze, to Jazz, the Charleston, Big Bands (Duke Ellington), the crooners (Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby) and groups like the Ink Spots and The Ravens (and many, many others) inspired The Platters, The Diamonds and hundreds of Doo-Wop groups to come. Elvis himself was greatly influenced by Gospel music and Dean Martin. Many people don’t know that the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland, Ohio

or why it’s there. Alan Freed did a radio show in Cleveland and he was playing what was called at that time “race” music (a mixture of several of the before mentioned music types). He found that name to be unacceptable and came up with show The Moondog Rock N’ Roll Party which was so popular he moved to New York to be on New York City Radio and the term Rock N’ Roll was born. JD did a quick search of the music charts and in 1952 there were several hits with the word “Rock” in them for example The Ravens’ Rock Me Momma and Chuck Webb and Ella Fitzgerald’s Rock It for Me. Even back in 1934, one of Mr. Chapman’s favorite songs, The Boswell Sisters’ song simply called Rock and Roll. He said he suspects none of these songs sounded like anything we would today call Rock N’ Roll, but he pointed out that it shows the term Rock N’ Roll was in wide usage before Mr. Freed commandeered it for his own purposes. So if not Elvis, who was the first

person to sing Rock N’ Roll? We may never know, but Big Joe Turner had 13 R&B hits from 1945 to 1955 and one was, and is, a Rock N’ Roll classic-Chains of Love. It was a #2 hit for him in 1951 and a Top Ten hit for Pat Boone in 1956. He finally had a #1 hit with a song that everyone knows- Shake, Rattle, and Roll (1954). Other rockers who came to mind were Roy Brown (11 hits between 1948 and 1951), Muddy Waters (11 hits from 1948-1954), Howlin Wolf, and Fats Domino (61 chart hits). Ike Turner and His Kings of Rhythm recorded what many historians consider the first Rock N’ Roll record in 1951-Rocket 88. It was sung by one of the members of his band, Jackie Brenston, who got credit on the record label (which Ike complained about the rest of his life-and Mr. Chapman doesn’t blame him!). Other early rockers were Chuck Berry (1955-a big year for Chuck-three hits-Maybelline, Wee, Wee Hours, and Thirty Days), and Bo Diddley

(had three hits before Elvis happened (Bo Diddley, I’m a Man-which George Thurgood turned into Bad to the Bone, and Diddley Daddy), Little Richard (Tutti Frutti in 1955), The Crows (GEE in 1954), The Orioles (It’s too Soon to Know in 1948 and Crying in the Chapel in 1953), and The Moonglows (#20 hit in 1955, Sincerely, that went to #1 for the McGuire Sisters later on). But the undisputed King of Rock N’ Roll before Elvis, according to Mr. Chapman, was undoubtedly Bill Haley and his Comets. Bill had nine chart hits before Elvis had one (Crazy Man in 1953 at #12, followed by Shake, Rattle, and Roll at #7, and Dim Dim the Lights at #11). Bill Haley’s biggest year, however was 1955 with six chart hits in on year-Birth of the Boogie, Mambo Rock, Rock Around the Clock, Razzle Dazzle, Burn that Candle, and Rock-A-Beatin’ Boogie. Rock Around the Clock was #1 for eight weeks and is the first Rock N’ Roll song to chart.

Centralia Connected Seeking Volunteers

Centralia Connected Mentoring program, now in its second year, is seeking mentors and volunteers to support our community’s children. Centralia Connected is a partnership between the Centralia City Schools and community members that matches multiple caring, committed adults with one child, forming a family of support that is willing to do whatever it takes to help that children grow to be successful, motivated and responsible citizens. Our community’s high levels of poverty and other issues cause obstacles that are often too great for our children and their families to overcome. In addition,

children need more than just resources. They need the same unwavering love and support and deep interpersonal bonds that we all need. Centralia Connected seeks to forge bonds between these children and adult volunteers in the Centralia area, a goal that not only provides the hand up that any child needs, but also connects people from all neighborhoods and backgrounds. Nothing can foster community and understanding more than the shared common goal of raising children up to reach their highest potential. And, the improvement of a city can only be achieved if its citizens act together, listening and understanding each other’s perspectives and

needs. In this vein, Centralia Connected believes that the children for which mentors are sought will, in fact, connect us with one another. Centralia Connected seeks approximately 30 mentors for students entering the program in the Fall of the school year. Because a team of mentors are matched with one child, anyone who is interested in applying to be a mentor is encouraged to recruit other responsible, caring adults to apply as well. For more information about the application process, an online application, and specific details of the program, please go to centraliaconnected.com or call the Centralia City Schools at 618-545-6603.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Praying the Lord’s Prayer A vast majority of Americans say that they believe in prayer. The true proof that you believe in prayer is that you actually pray. To have power in prayer you must believe God hears and answers prayer. (Hebrews 11:6) Jesus, the Son of God, prayed often. The disciples were so impressed and impacted by Jesus’ life of prayer that they asked him to teach them to pray. Jesus gave them a model of prayer that has become known as “The Lord’s Prayer”. (Matthew 6:5-13) Praying the Lord’s Prayer everyday will transform your life. I recommend that you memorize “The Lord’s Prayer”. There are five keys that help me memorize and activate scriptures: 1) Read and listen to the scripture; 2) Ruminate or meditate on the scripture passage; 3) Reimagine the scripture in your

mind; 4) Remember or memorize the scripture; 5) Repeat the scripture verbally and often. Repetition is a key. Repeat the scripture as a prayer. The Lord’s Prayer contains six petitions – three concerning the holiness and will of God and three in taking our personal needs to God. We should not pray The Lord’s Prayer in a ritualistic or rote manner, but as a model guideline in how and what to pray for. Pray these six petitions. O U R FAT H E R I N HEAVEN. (Matthew 6:9) We put our focus on God as our heavenly Father who loves us and cares for us. He desires an intimate personal relationship with his children. He delights in giving them gifts and meeting their needs. (Luke 11:9-13) HALLOWED BE THY NAME. Prayer involves worshiping God for he is worthy. To “hallow” his name is to revere his glorious name and

praising and exalting his name. This is how the psalmist David instructed us to enter into God’s presence. (Psalm 100) THY KINGDOM COME. (Matthew 6:10) A friend of mine wears a t-shirt that reads – “Bringing Heaven to Earth”. Heaven invades earth when we pray. We pray for the spiritual manifestation of the kingdom of God in hearts, lives, and situations. We also pray for the kingdom of God to come to earth with its ultimate fulfillment in the future, when King Jesus comes to rule and reign on earth. THEY WILL BE DONE. (Matthew 6:10) We must sincerely desire and pray that God’s will be done in our lives and on the earth. (Matthew 6:33) Pray that God’s will as revealed in the Word of God be done (i.e. salvation, healing, and preaching the gosp el throughout the world.) OUR DAILY BREAD. Jesus taught us to pray for our daily needs trusting our heavenly Father to supply them. (Philippians 4:19) FORGIVE US OUR SINS AS WE FORGIVE. (Matthew 6:12) In prayer, we confess our sins and ask forgiveness. (I John 1:9) We must also forgive those who have harmed us. Jesus said, “For

3

if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Fat h e r f or g i v e y ou .” (Matthew 6:14-15) On the cross Jesus prayed for those who crucified him, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:3) Forgiveness is vital to your physical health, spiritual health and eternal destiny DELIVER US FROM EVIL. (Matthew 6:13) Satan plots evil against God’s children. We must not forget to pray for God’s deliverance and protection. (Psalm 92; Matthew 12:18) FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM AND THE P OW E R , A N D T H E GLORY. (Matthew 6:13) We should begin and end prayer with thanksgiving, giving glory to God for answered prayer. Remember the true proof that you believe in prayer is that you actually pray. Never underestimate the power of prayer. One small prayer can change your life. Pray the Lord’s Prayer every day. It will transform your life.

More Favorite Easy, Healthy Meals Hopefully, the new school year has begun to settle in for all! Last week we did easy, healthy meals for the family and have had requests for more. So here we are again with some more of my favorites.

6 oz. ditalini pasta or other small macaroni 1/2 tsp. dried thyme 1/2 tsp. dried basil 1/8 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. garlic powder 1/8 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 8 oz. thin-sliced chicken breast cutlets, cut into strips 1 tsp. olive oil 2½ cups halved cherry tomatoes

1 medium zucchini (about 8 oz.), halved lengthwise and thinly sliced 1 cup coarsely diced red onion 1/4 cup defatted chicken broth 1/4 cup water 1 can (10 oz.) red kidney beans, rinsed and drained 3 oz. shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese 1 T. chopped fresh Italian parsley (optional)

Bring a covered medium pot of water to boil over high heat. Add pasta, return to boil and cook 5 to 8 minutes, or according to package directions until al 'dente. Drain in colander and set aside. While pasta is cooking, in a cup, crumble together 1/4 tsp. thyme and 1/4 tsp. basil with salt, garlic powder and red pepper flakes. Sprinkle seasonings over both sides of chicken strips. Brush large, heavy nonstick skillet with oil and heat over medium- high heat. Add chicken strips and saute about 2 minutes per side, or until lightly browned and cooked through. Transfer cooked chicken to clean plate. Add tomatoes, zucchini, onions, broth, water and remaining 1/4 tsp. thyme and 1/4 tsp. basil to skillet, and toss to blend well. Simmer, tossing frequently, 4 to 5 minutes, or until tomatoes have collapsed and vegetables are tender. Add beans and simmer 2 to 3 minutes, or until heated through. Stir in drained pasta. Place chicken on top of pasta and vegetables; pour any chicken juices that have collected on plate over chicken and sprinkle with cheese. Remove from heat, cover and let stand 3 to 4 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Sprinkle with parsley, if desired.

Iler says, “You will find a variety of styles and mediums because I continue to grow in my search for what I want to say and I enjoy trying new techniques.” Iler started out working with acrylic on paper and then moved to acrylic on canvas, doing still life and portraits. She adds, “I used bright colors with light and shadow to emphasize the color and beauty that exists under surfaces. I have dabbled in abstract, in expressionism, and sculpture. Most recently I have been learning to use oil paints, moving back towards realism. I enjoy it all. I do not expect to stay in one place, I prefer to keep moving.” Ms. Iler is pictured with her piece "Invitation." She says, “Bowls are intrinsically open, they cannot help but invite us in, the flame represents spirit, creativity,

Is it good or bad? For me, being shifted creates discomfort, but ultimately flares into renewal, creativity, a change in worldview.” Hours for the Kaskaskia College Dee and Sue

Today many are remembering the life and legacy of Arizona's Senator John McCain, who lost his yearlong battle with brain cancer at the age of 81. This week the Senator would have been 82. Senator McCain was one of Arizona's favorite sons, and there is no doubt he will be missed on both sides of the aisle. McCain's seat will remain vacant out of respect until he is laid to rest. R.I.P. How To Lose To Trump In One Easy Step John Brennan may not know it, but he is acting in a drama scripted and produced by Donald J. Trump. As Eli Lake of Bloomberg perceptively observed, President Trump isn't trying to silence Brennan by revoking his security clearance, as the former CIA director's defenders

Manafort was convicted on 8 of the 18 charges, which could get him up to 80 years in prison at sentencing. If this man is guilty, so be it. My question: Was he treated fairly? However, we know what Hillary Clinton is guilty of, along with husband Bill, even though when it comes to them the left sees no evil, speaks no evil, and hears no evil. Folks, it's time these two face the music for their years of crime sprees, everything from the Clinton Foundation fraud to 33,000 questionable emails deliberately destroyed (some classified). And that's not

even touching the surface. And then, of course, there's Al Sharpton, another prominent extreme leftist. As Al rose, so did his "unpaid taxes," accruing more than $4.5 to $4.7 million in state and federal taxes. Sharpton did question the size of the debt but didn't deny he owed back taxes. What's interesting is, according to state officials, the liens are actually greater now than when they were first filed. How long would you or I get by with this one? When will he face his time in court? B ut b a c k t o Pau l Manafort. The fact is, as the

insist, but elevate him as a foil. Trump couldn't hope for a better poster boy for the so-called deep state than a former CIA director who immediately began to sound like a commentator for MSNBC upon leaving government — and, indeed, signed up as a commentator for MSNBC. It has been the usual practice of former top intelligence professionals to keep their political opinions, and especially their wild-eyed rants, to themselves. They understand that, having been entrusted with some of the most sen-

sitive powers of the United States government, they should show forbearance and restraint lest they undermine the reputations of their institutions. Brennan has had no such compunction. Granted, he's acted under provocation. Trump has goaded him on Twitter and launched extraordinary broadsides against the work of U.S. intelligence agencies. Trump often sounds like the guy popping off down at the end of the bar, and he's transformed Brennan into the guy down at the other end of the bar. Advantage: Trump. The president always benefits from the fact that his brand depends on violating norms, whereas if his opponents are baited into violating norms in return, they diminish themselves and their cause. In a notorious tweet, Brennan accused the president of "nothing short of treason" for his craven performance at a joint press conference with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. This was the first time on record that a prominent elected official ever committed treason — which usually involves giving away the nation's secrets or compromising intelligence assets — at a public event extensively covered by the international media. What did Brennan mean by his charge? He apparently doesn't know. Pressed by Rachel Maddow of MSNBC, Brennan ex-

left is licking their lips just waiting in the corner talking impeachment, there have been no charges filed against the President. Another reality is Trump has the power to pardon Manafort. Time will tell! On to Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth "Pocahontas" Warren's statement on Mollie Tibbetts' murder: She said, "Let's tackle 'real problems' like family separation," as she suggested that preventing family separation at the border should be a more pressing concern than preventing illegal aliens from committing violent crimes. Wonder is she'd feel the same if it was her child or grandchild. All I can say is Build that wall.. .and call it Mollie's Wall! On to our friend Rich Lowry. plained, incoherently, that "I said it was nothing short of treasonous. I didn't mean that he committed treason." Oh. Asked point-blank if he thinks that the president is serving the Russian government, he said that "I scratch my head a lot," not the usual standard for alleging that someone committed a capital offense. Brennan's conceit has made him the ideal target for Trump, since even some of the former intelligence officials who oppose the revocation of his security clearance are uncomfortable with how he has conducted himself. The president's adversaries may consider this unfair, but the institutions Trump targets are best-served by not responding in kind. If the president says that the press can't be trusted because it's so biased, the press should react by being less biased rather than more. If he says that he's being undone by a deep state conspiracy, former intelligence officials should be more restrained rather than less. Brennan either doesn't understand this dynamic or doesn't care. He has threatened a lawsuit, and Trump has welcomed one. The president is happy for a war with the most unhinged representative of the intelligence community at hand, and John O. Brennan is playing his role flawlessly. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. Š 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Expand Living Spaces With Clever Ideas

Homeowners looking to add more space to their homes do not necessarily need to make major reno-

are coveted niches in a home. The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore, homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable. A recent survey from the online home design and remodeling resource Houzz vations. They simply have found that more than 4,500 to see the possibilities in users were planning a landscape update. In addition, outdoor living spaces. Outdoor living spaces 56 percent of homeowners

Complete These Home Improvements Over The Weekend Home improvement projects ramp up when the weather warms up, as homeowners channel the rejuvenating feelings of spring and tackle their home to-do lists. Largescale renovations can greatly affect a home, but smaller projects can yield impressive results and be completed over the course of a single weekend. If time is of the essence, these weekend or one-day projects may satisfy homeowners’ desires to fix up their homes. • Create an accent wall. Painting a focal wall in a home can create a serious impact. The bonus is it will not take as long or require as many materials as painting an entire room. Accent walls frequently feature a bold color, so decide on placement and tackle this project in less than a day. • Install stair runners. Dress up hardwood stairs with decorative carpet runners. Runners come in elongated pieces of carpeting or individual pieces that can be placed on each step. If carpeting doesn’t fit with the home’s design, painting

individual stair treads also can create visual appeal. • Dress up the entryway. An entryway is a guest’s first impression of a home. Many entryways can use a minor overhaul, both inside and outside. Paint the front door a different color so it pops from the curb. Install a new mailbox or decorative hous e numbers. A new welcome mat can change the look as well. Inside, consider laying a new floor. Resilient vinyl tiles come in many different patterns and can mimic the look of wood, travertine or marble. Installing a floor can take a day or two. • Install a new faucet. Instantly improve a kitchen or a bathroom with new fixtures. New faucets can provide aesthetic appeal and low-flow faucets can help conserve water. • Create a gallery on the staircase. Gather and arrange framed photos, artwork or wall accents so that they ascend the wall of a staircase. This creates a designer touch and can dress up an often barren area of wall space. • Install a fresh light

surveyed were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. While the creation of outdoor living spaces can cost thousands of dollars depending on the renovation, homeowners have more budget-friendly options at their disposal as well. The following are some ways to create inviting spaces no matter how much square-footage is present. Revamp a garage or shed. Rather than turning a storage area into a catchall for items time forgot, clean out the space and put it to better use. For instance, kids may appreciate their own clubhouse away

from the main living area. These spaces also can be handy bonus rooms for when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate and backyard guests need to seek shelter. Wall art, curtains, a pendant light, and some comfortable outdoor-compatible furniture can quickly transform a space. Create a relaxing nook. Whether there’s a ledge, overhang, small terrace, or porch off the house, turn it into a relaxing area for reading a book or sipping a beverage. Use a few outdoor pillows, pull up a small folding table and dress the area with hanging lights and potted plants for a quiet retreat.

dock equipment

Add privacy to a porch. If it’s privacy you covet, install curtain rods and hang lightweight mesh or another translucent material that obscures neighbors’ views without blocking out natural light. Invest in outdoor sofas and chaises to create an outdoor living room right on the porch. If your budget allows, consider closing in the porch as a true threeseason room so it can be used throughout fall, spring and summer. Outdoor living spaces are booming and highly achieveable, and many such spaces need not be expensive.

fixture. Improve drab spaces with a little illumination. Better Homes & Gardens suggests replacing an existing fixture with something new and vibrant. If hanging a new fixture is not within one’s skill set, free-standing table or floor lamps also can cast a new glow on a space. • Add molding. Molding can add instant aesthetic appeal to a room. Molding is appropriate near the floor, at the top of walls where they meet the ceiling, or even mid-wall as a chair rail. Some homeowners like to create framed molding on walls in formal living spaces. • Update kitchen or b at hro om hardware. Replacing hardware is a fast and easy project, but one that can have immediate impact. Swap out tired or outdated hardware for newer brushed metals and more impactful shapes and designs. Home renovations do not need to take weeks or months. Many projects can be completed over the course of a weekend.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your efforts to defend your project begin to show favorable results. You should soon be able to win over even the most determined detractors who had lined up against it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You win praise for your selfless efforts in a very difficult situation. But be careful not to allow your generous nature to be exploited by those who have their own agenda. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A trusted colleague sheds light on a recent spate of puzzling workplace situations. This should give you the information you need to bring to your superior’s attention. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A shift in workplace management could be helpful for talented Leos and Leonas who have been waiting to have their accomplishments rewarded by receptive leadership. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding between you and someone you care for should be corrected immediately. This relationship is too important to lose over a bruised ego. medical confirmation of the diagnosis alone. To date, over 500,000 people with serious disabilities have been approved through this fast-track policy-compliant disability process. The list has grown to a total of 233 conditions, including diseases such as pancreatic cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and acute leukemia. The agency incorporates leading technology to easily identify potential Compassionate Allowances and make quick decisions. For disability cases not covered by this program, Social Security’s Health IT brings the speed and efficiency of electronic medical records to the disability determination process. When a person applies for disability benefits, Social Security must obtain medical records in order to make an accurate determination. It may take weeks for health care organizations to provide records for the applicant’s case. With electronic records transmission, Social Security is able to quickly obtain a claimant’s medical information, review it, and make a determination faster than ever before. situation. A job-related incident also eases as more information provides a clearer focus on the problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Quick action to heal bruised feelings pays off in a big way. Now you’ll be able to move forward with your plans without that problem holding you back. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your creativity combined with a positive attitude should give you a considerable edge in finding a way to get around the negativity you’ve run into. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) That sudden streak of stubbornness could cause some problems. Try to be more open to helpful suggestions and more flexible in making needed changes. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Now that that special relationship appears to be well and truly restored, you can spend more time dealing with those long-needed workplace changes. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new opportunity sounds promising. But watch out for any conditions that might be attached. Before making a decision, ask that each one be explained in detail.
