Get Carded At Your Library During September, which is Library Card Sign-up Month, the Centralia Regional Library District is joining with the American Library Association and other public libraries nationwide to ensure that every student has the most important school supply of all — a library card. Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. Libraries work to remind parents and youth that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. This September Disney Pixar’s superhero family, the Incredibles, is teaming up with the American Librar y Association to promote the value of a library card. As honorary chairs, the Incredibles are reminding families, students and people of all ages that signing up for a library card is a great step toward a truly super lifestyle: libraries offer fun

and informative resources to help you pursue your passions and succeed in school. Throughout the school year, CRLD staff assists parents and caregivers with saving hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students; from free access to STEAM programs/activities, educational apps, and technology workshops, to the expertise of librarians. A library card at CRLD also means access to computers and free Internet access. For those without Internet access at home, a library card may mean the difference between failing and having a successful school year. A library card is one of the most cost effective back to school supplies available. Several activities are planned at the Centralia library in celebration of this special month. There will be displays highlighting PBS’s Great American Read, and Banned and Challenged Books Week; a Freedom to Read chal-

lenge for adults (ages 16 and up), an Educator Open House in the Youth Department, and Saturday movie matinees, September 8 and 15. Throughout the month, starting the Tuesday after Labor Day, patrons who sign up for a new library card, or renew the one they have, will be able to spin the wheel for

a prize. Check out the library webpage at www.centralialibrary.org for more program details; or stop by the library at 515 East Broadway in Centralia. Look for future program information, and sign up for news and updates, on the library’s webpage at www.centralialibrary.org.

here's the outrage? A school gets shot up, costing the lives of innocent children and teachers, and the left goes crazy! I get it, except they attack the very thing that could save lives, guns! But last week three extremist Muslims were released by a liberal judge. These men were training children to be school shooters in a New Mexico compound, where authorities also found a three-year-old child buried. The alleged reason for the release was not enough evidence was collected within the ten day time frame. It's sad that the extreme left, in my opinion, has turned a blind eye to this situation. Again, where's the outcry?

the newetsstpot and hottes to win BIG!

Which leads me to George Washington's farewell address 220 years ago. The address was first drafted by Madison and later amended and expanded by Hamilton, and was printed in nearly every newspaper in America and throughout Europe. Why George Washington's farewell address, and why now? Because it contains a penetrating analysis highly relevant to today's craziness. In his speech he used words like parties or "factions." Washington meant the union of individuals who desire to rule without consideration for the lasting common good. The public, in other words, tends in two contrary directions. Sound familiar? Without unity, he argued that prosperity and security are impossible. Unity means that citizens must first and foremost consider themselves to be Ameri-

opposed to members of a party or faction. He also pointed out our passionate attachment to particular parties that distorts our judgment. First, the rule of a party inevitably gives birth to counter parties. Today some of these factions are: socialism; the New York based women's movement; fake news; white supremacists, Antifa, the attack on individuals (like Sarah Sanders and others, not to mention the attacks on Donald Trump from Day One); the destruction of history; gun control; and immigration. This is all leading to very dangerous territory, causing citizens to cease to look upon others as fellow citizens, and moving towards hatred on both sides. George Washington even suggested parties would invite foreign influence. He warned by weakening reverence for one's own nation,

parties give influence to ambitious, corrupted or deluded citizens. Today one wonders whether the left would sacrifice American interests for favored people. In the case of the Obama administration, it was the Iranians. What I find most interesting is our founding fathers were wise beyond anything imaginable, and to some degree warned us. What I find incredibly sad is, in my opinion, we are sitting on a time bomb, and the only way I see us coming together as a nation again is through a tragic event. This country stood united during World War II and 911. Why can't we come together today? Just food for thought. On another topic, at this point I've had a number of calls from people who have received a letter telling them how to vote by mail. The concerning issue for those that called and myself is the letter is from the desk of Jessie White, and on the bottom it says "Paid for by JB for Governor." It also directs them to go to an early voting site at ildems. com/voting-in-illinois. The first thing I did was to verify it was legal, and I was told it was. My concern was also how do you verify the application for a VoteBy-Mail ballot. I was told by the signature. The first thing that crossed my mind at this point was does the County Courthouse have a handwriting expert in house. The answer was, of course, no. In my opinion, this is a great way to encourage voter fraud. Although this may be legal, I find it most unprofessional on Jessie White's and JB's part, and unacceptable. But, it is what it is, below the belt tactics! I do want to point out these troublesome letters are not coming from any local county clerk's office They are coming from the Democratic Party. In closing, the conflict summarized in George Washington's farewell address is one of the permanent problems of a Republic. ed? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name and what is his Son’s name, if you know?” (Proverbs 30:4) God has a Son. The prophet Isaiah revealed his name and his arrival to earth by being born of a virgin, “Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:24) His name is Immanuel, which means, “God with us.” What is his name? Isaiah gives these clues to his identity, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given . . . And his name will be called Wonderful, Counselor,

What’s His Name? Throughout antiquity each generation has had its superheroes. In my generation I was mesmerized by the television episodes of the Lone Ranger and Superman. Mankind has always had an innate longing for a superhero to rescue them. Stories of folklore, fables, and fantasy have filled the imagination of man. But the truth was realized when the invisible God, the creator of the universe, sent not a superhero, but a redeemer to the earth, who bore the express image of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit inspired ancient Agur, who penned Proverbs 30 to ask this astounding question, “Who has ascended into heaven or descend-

Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6-7) So far, we have discovered that God has a Son described by various names revealing his identity and his divinity. In the gospels we are introduced to the Son of God by the angel Gabriel, who was dispatched by God to announce his birth through the virgin Mary. “’Don’t be afraid Mary,’ the angel told her, ‘for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a Son and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever, his kingdom will never end!” (Luke 1:26-38) What is his Son’s name? How does he impact your life? HE IS JESUS. “And you will name him Jesus.” It was a rather common name among the Jewish people. In the Hebrew it is Joshua or Jeshua (Yeshua) meaning Jehovah is salvation. Jesus is found in every book of the Bible, types and foreshadowing, pointing to Jesus Christ as the ultimate redeemer. In his

name there is salvation and forgiveness of sins. “You are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-21) In Jesus’ name there is healing and deliverance. In Jesus’ name prayers are answered. (John 16:23-26) “At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow in heaven and on earth.” (Philippians 2:6-11) HE IS THE SON OF THE MOST HIGH. The scriptures reveal adamantly and clearly that he is God, the Son of God. “He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” (Luke 1:32, 35; Revelation 5:6-14) HE IS THE KING OF ALL KINGS. He is referred to as the Son of David. (Luke 1:32) He will rule on the throne of David, on Mount Zion, forever. (Luke 1:32-33) “Everlasting God” is a term of deity. HE IS THE HOLY ONE. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit through the virgin Mary. He is totally God and totally man, but he is untainted by sin. All creation worships him, for he is holy. (Luke 1:35; Revela-

FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT Special Section

Defining Hardscape And How To Use It Curb appeal is beneficial in various ways. Curb appeal can make a home more attractive to prospective buyers and give existing homeowners a place they want to come home to. In its study of the worth of outdoor remodeling projects, the National Association of Realtors found standard lawn care and overall landscape upgrades were most appealing to buyers, as well as the most likely to add value to a home. Although plants, grass and other items can improve curb appeal, homeowners should not overlook hardscaping.

Hardscaping is an industry term that refers to the non-living features of a landscape. These features can include everything from decks to walkways to ornamental boulders. Introducing paths or paver walls to a property helps develop that home’s hardscape. Hardscape and soft elements often work in concert to create inspiring landscape designs. DIY landscape designers can heed certain tips to make the most of hardscape features on their properties. Choose Materials As with many landscaping projects, homeowners

must first determine what types of additions they would like on their properties. Common hardscape features include patios, decks, walkways of pavers or bricks, and retaining walls. Hardscape elements can be functional or simply decorative features that add whimsy to the yard. Choose A Theme The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may

include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive. Think About The Purpose Hardscaping can look good but also serve key purposes. Pebbles or gravel can mitigate trouble areas that don’t grow grass or plant life well. Retaining walls hold back soil in yards with sharply inclined hills. Mulch can set perimeters around trees and shrubs, as well as planting beds. Consult A Professional While many hardscaping additions can be handled by novices, large-scale projects, such as patios and decking, can change the grading of the yard. Professionals can map out how to handle drainage issues and meet building codes. In addition, professional installation can ensure hardscaping features last for years to come.

Beat Cabin Fever With Winter Renovations When the weather outside is frightful, homeowners and renters can turn their interior spaces into something delightful. Residents can banish feelings of cabin fever by using time spent inside to make subtle or even substantial improvements to their living areas. Individuals may find that winter is a great time to tackle delayed or unfinished projects or to put plans for major renovations in motion. Homeowners may find that they have some extra time on their hands when weather and early evening darkness reduces how much time they can spend outdoors. The following projects can help homeowners make the most of their time indoors. • Start painting. One of the easiest ways to transform the look of a room is with a fresh coat of paint. Painting a room or rooms is an inexpensive project that can be completed over

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A little “wool-gathering” for the usually productive Lamb is all right if it helps you unwind. But be careful; too much daydreaming can put you behind schedule in your work. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A work problem is close to being resolved. Now you can go ahead and celebrate the week, accepting invitations from friends who enjoy your company. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting your new plan accepted won’t be a major hassle if you have the facts to back it up. Your supporters are also prepared to help you make your case. Good luck. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Dealing with a pesky job problem might be time-consuming but necessary. The sooner you get this situation settled, the sooner you can move on to other matters. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Career advancement is favored thanks to your impressive work record. On the personal side, you should soon hear some good news about an ailing family member. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) There might be mixed signals from a certain someone who doesn’t seem all that certain about their intentions. Best to sort it all out before it becomes more confusing. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Get all the facts about that investment “opportunity” before you put

even one dollar into it. There could be hidden problems that could prove to be costly. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Compromising on a matter you feel strongly about not only ends the impasse, but can be a win-win deal for all. Remember: Scorpios do well with change. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) With all the demands you currently have to deal with, accepting the help of family and friends could be the wisest course to take at this time. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Recent upsetting incidents might have left you with a big gap in your self-assurance. Refill it by spending time with those who know how worthy you really are. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A dispute about money needs to be resolved quickly, before it festers into something more serious. Consider asking an impartial colleague to mediate the matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A soft approach could be more effective than making a loud demand for the information you need. You might even find yourself with more data than you expected. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re sought out for the wonderful advice you’re able to offer to others. And sometimes you even take it yourself. © 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Learn About The Causes Of Adult Hearing Loss Hearing loss is quite common and can impact people's lives in profound ways. Although there are some treatments that can improve one's ability to hear and communicate, many people are interested in learning about the ways they may be able to prevent hearing loss in the first place. Medical experts from the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association advise that hearing loss can be caused by different factors. Learning about these causes can help individuals make smart decisions at a young age to prevent future hearing loss when possible. In certain circumstances, hearing loss may be unavoidable. In such instances, audiologists, or doctors specializing in hearing, can help. Conductive hearing loss Conductive hearing loss refers to problems with the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear and its bones, states the Hearing Loss Association of America. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss include:

· Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear in which fluid accumulation can interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles. · Impacted earwax also can cause hearing problems. · Fluid in the middle ear may obstruct hearing. · Otosclerosis, which is a middle ear disease, can make it difficult for the tiny bones in the middle ear to move. Surgery can correct the problem. · Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal or middle ear structure can impact hearing as well. Sensorineural hearing loss Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, occurs due to problems of the inner ear. It is often referred to as nerve-related hearing loss. · Aging is a common cause of hearing loss that may not be reversible. Agerelated hearing loss is called presbycusis and is marked by muffled or unclear speech. Treatment with assistive hearing devices can help improve hearing.

· Trauma to the ear or head may impact hearing. Wearing protective gear during sports or other activities can protect against neurological damage that may cause hearing loss. · Damage to the inner ear can result from prolonged exposure to loud noises, states the Mayo Clinic. These noises cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren't transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Using hearing protection and turning down the volume can help. · Ménière's disease is an inner ear problem of unknown origins. It usually starts in people between the ages of 30 and 50. Dizziness and ringing of the ear are common, and hearing loss comes and goes. Some loss can become permanent. · Viruses and diseases as well as family history also may play a role in SNHL.

Winter weather brings harsh conditions that can wreak havoc on skin. Come winter, winds pick up, temperatures plummet and humidity levels in the air can drop. These factors create a recipe for sapping skin of its natural oils and vibrancy. Even the most well-maintained skin can be impacted by winter air,

and the other changes the season brings forth. Taking the initiative ahead of winter's arrival can help people salvage the appearance of their skin. · Start exfoliating. Skin's radiance can be dulled by a buildup of dead skin cells. These cells also can clog follicles, leading to breakouts. Regular ex-

foliation one to three times per week can assist with the removal of dead skin cells. Ridding the outer layer of skin of unnecessary debris can also help skincare products penetrate more readily. · Choose a thick moisturizer. It may be necessary to ramp up moisturizing products to combat with dry, winter air. Look for products that contain shea butter, olive oil, jojoba oil, or cocoa butter. They'll help retain moisture and protect the skin against the wind and cold. · Turn down the heat. While it's important to stay warm, bundle up rather than cranking the heat. Avoid especially hot water in the shower as well. Hot water can strip the skin of its natural moisture. Therefore, be sure to take warm showers instead of boiling hot ones. · Wear gloves to protect hands. Frequent hand washing and exposure to cold temperatures can impact the skin on hands. Protect them with warm gloves and generously apply moisturizer. · Run the humidifier. Use a humidifier at night to keep skin supple and improve the health of nasal passages.

Reap The Benefits Of Physical Therapy

Injuries have the potential to sideline people for weeks, months or permanently. Injury to the body can occur when participating in organized sports, fitness regimens or even after being in an accident. Recovering from incidents that can impact mobility and range of motion takes time, but physical therapy can help the body acclimate to regular activity once more. Physical therapy also can help healthy people as well. Those who have suffered a sprain or a broken bone or even spent a duration of time immobile in the hospital due to an illness are often prescribed physical therapy as part of their follow-up treatment. Phys-

ical therapy programs try to progressively increase strength, improve mobility and help the body return to a state where it can function as best as possible. In many cases, a person can regain his or her original capabilities. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, a physical therapist is a trained and licensed medical professional who has the experience to diagnose physical abnormalities, restore physical function and mobility, maintain that function, and promote proper form for future activity. Physical therapy sessions can take place in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, fitness settings, private

practices, and much more. Not only can physical therapists react to and treat an injury, but they can also teach exercises, stretches and techniques to help prevent problems in the first place. Experts at Bay State Physical Therapy indicate that physical therapy extends beyond disabled or injured people. Physical therapists can educate a person on weaknesses in the body and can guide correction on poor body mechanics that cause pain. This way a person can make changes to prevent future pain and injury. Rather than being reactionary, healthy individuals can take a proactive approach to avoiding pain and injury. When one opts for physical therapy, he or she may: · undergo a physical exam and evaluation of pain, movement, flexibility, and performance · receive a clinical diagnosis and plan of care · establish long-term goals · participate in physical therapy treatment, which may include stretch-

The Connection Between Eating And Energy

The connection between energy and eating is significant. A healthy diet and approach to eating can vastly improve energy levels, while a poorly planned diet that lacks nutrition can contribute to feelings of fatigue and increase a person's risk for various ailments. The Harvard Medical School notes that different kinds of foods are converted to energy at different rates. That's why some foods, such as candy, provide quick boosts of energy while foods such as whole grains tend to supply the body with energy reserves that it can draw on throughout the day. It's not just what people eat but how they eat that can affect their energy levels. In addition to choosing the right foods, men and women can try the following strategies as they look to eat to boost their energy levels. · Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Avoiding

the traditional threemeals-per-day approach may help improve energy levels, especially for people who tend to eat sizable meals once, twice or even three times every day. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the metabolisms of people who do not eat regularly will slow down, as the body absorbs and stores more of the food it eats. Those stores include cholesterol and fat, which can be unhealthy and contribute to weight gain. However, by eating small meals more frequently, one's metabolism speeds up and more calories are burned. The body recognizes more food is soon on the way and, as a result, it does not need to store as much cholesterol and fat as it would if meals were eaten less frequently. · Avoid a big lunch. The Harvard Medical School notes that, while the reasons are unclear, research has indicated that the circadian rhythms of

people who eat big lunches indicate a more significant drop in afternoon energy levels than the rhythms of people who eat smaller midday meals. Men and women who eat big lunches and find their energy levels waning later in the workday can try to eat smaller midday meals to boost their energy. · Be careful with caffeine. The foods people eat are not the only components of their diet that can affect their energy levels. Caffeinated beverages can provide a temporary boost of energy as well. However, men and women who drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to boost their energy levels should avoid doing so in large amounts after 2 p.m. That's because caffeine can cause insomnia, and insufficient sleep can dramatically affect energy levels. · Choose the right snacks. Eating smaller, more frequent meals may compel some people to snack. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics notes that snacks are important as long as they're the right snacks. Avoid snacks that are just empty calories in favor of foods that contain protein and fiber-rich carbohydrates. Such snacks, which may include fruits such as apples and fresh berries or protein sources like nuts and Greek yogurt, can provide lasting energy. It's also important that men and women not snack to fill themselves up, but rather to quell any hunger pangs and get an energy boost between meals. The foods people eat and when they eat them can have a dramatic impact on their energy levels.

ing, movement and weightbearing activities based on the therapist's guidance · be given at-home work to further progress in between sessions. While physical therapy

can be used for recovery from strokes or paralysis, injuries, trauma, and musculoskeletal conditions, it also benefits healthy people. For example, women can use physical therapy to

learn exercises that may prevent pelvic floor dysfunction. In addition, physical therapy can teach people how to improve their balance and prevent falls.

Although 17 years have passed, we remember the events of September 11, 2001 as if they happened yesterday. On this day of mourning and remembrance, we pause to pay tribute to the police, firefighters and first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice to save others and to all of the September 11th victims whose lives were cut short. Their memories live on in our hearts and our history, and we wish their loved ones comfort and peace at this difficult time and always.

We Will Always Remember.

housands of people were directly affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Millions more were glued to their televisions as they watched the news coverage of the attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and rural Pennsylvania. The former World Trade Center site was decimated by the attacks. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were part of the New York skyline for more than 40 years. The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death. After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12,

The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood. The names of every person who died in the 2011 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels along the edge the pools. In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001. According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal institution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11.
