Centralia Fall Festival Theme Winner Ella Sanders Sells First Button
The Centralia Halloween Parade and Fall Festival committee annually chooses a theme entry winner from area schools and this is used as the event theme for all activities including the commemorative buttons that are designed and sold each year based on the theme. The City of Centralia began designing buttons in 1992. Steve Shanafield was the designer until his passing. Dr. Jay Borum took over the designing, followed by Carl Meekam. The city sells the buttons to raise extra money so they can fund different parade activities and awards. Many people buy these buttons every year because they are collectors items
with only 500 being produced each year. This year's theme winner was Ella Sanders. Last Friday, September 7, the Committee gathered at the new City Hall located at 101 S. Locust to hold a button “first sale” between Ella and one of her relatives; Ella’s father, Chad Sanders, became this year's first purchaser. If you are interested in buying a button they can be picked up at Centralia City Hall, Wamac City Hall and various Beggars Corners until festival time. The 92nd Annual Halloween Parade and Fall Festival is only seven weeks away!!

After 76 years at their previous location at 222 S. Poplar, Centralia City Hall administration moved into their new renovated offices and Council Chambers at 101 S. Locust in the middle of Downtown Centralia. How fitting that City Hall's move was back to the 100 block of South Locust, where City Hall had been located from the 1880s to the late 1930s. The current building, built in 1925, many Centralians know as the Old National Bank building. In fact, the top facade still bears the name "Old National Bank." The vision of renovating and reusing the vacant building was that of City Manager Dan Ramey. Having served as City Manager for several years and realizing the ineffectiveness of having the current administration separated on two floors, the research and planning began in all departments. Also in mind were the advantages for the general public. At the old location, available, accessible parking seemed to be an ongoing problem and complaint. Citizens with problems or confusion with the City Hall layout, many times had to trek upstairs and downstairs to complete their business or resolve an issue. In addition, the Council Chambers were located on the second floor, which, even with an elevator, hindered those wanting to attend a council meeting. The reuse of a substantial building in the center of downtown, drawing more people daily into the downtown area was also considered a big advantage. City Manager Dan Ramey said, "Now the new administration building is hopefully more inviting, safer and user friendly for the citizens.

This week's column is written by Bob Franken. Name sound familiar? It should. Mr. Franken is an Emmy Award winning rep or ter w ho covere d Washington for more than 20 years with CNN. Today and for the past several
Good Grief, Bad Grief! "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Arguably these are even worse times than the mid19th century, when Charles Dickens wrote his "Tale of Two Cities." In the 21st century, we have effectively divided into two countries, separated by impenetrable fortifications. President Donald Trump heads up the hordes on the right. Those on the left are led by, well, actually they're not really led by anyone. That's a big part of their problem: All they really do is focus their utter contempt on Trump. He's constantly making that easy for them. With the latest legal set-

years he has been a columnist, leaning heavily to the left, and at times the extreme left. I found his column this week interesting and worth sharing after a week of the left stooping as low as they can go, from making John
McCain's two-week funeral a sideshow and turning it into a disgusting bash-thePresident event to the unacceptable, unethical stalling sideshow of the left's nastiness on the confirmation hearings just to disrupt the confirmation of Brett
backs for Trump and his cartel, the Trump enemies cling to the hope that he'll somehow be run out of office. However, their mood darkens the moment they review their track record. Trump is, after all, president of the United States, a concept they couldn't even fathom until he had pulled it off, leaving them in the dust of despair. "How could this happen?" they wailed. Let us count the ways: For starters, there was the elitist candidate, Hillary Clinton, whose qualifications were so superior to Trump's that it shouldn't have been a contest for her, except she appeared to place herself so much higher — I believe "high and mighty" is the phrase — that she really couldn't relate to the rabble below, the ones she called "deplorables." When the effete suffered the agony of defeat, they zoomed right into the Kubler-Ross stages of grief: Their first stop was denial, as in "This is just a bad
dream." When they woke up to realize that the nightmare was here to stay, they settled on anger. That lasted until their first latte of the morning-after. Then it was on to the bargaining stage, as in "I need to understand this, so it never happens again." Unfortunately, they are not really that good at introspection, so when they desperately tried to relate to all those put off by their pretentiousness, they scurried to their Kindles and read "Hillbilly Elegy" so they could comprehend the motivations of the millions of Trumpsters. After that, they felt that they had done all they needed to do to comprehend what makes the bourgeoisie tick. Then they returned to their safe spaces. By the way, "Hillbilly Elegy" is about a grossly dysfunctional Appalachian family. It had nothing to do with the mass of Americans who were so fed up and frightened that they voted for Donald Trump because he convinced them he was not

Kavanaugh. Then there were Obama's speeches last week pointing out how wonderful he is and blaming Bush for all his woes as President as well as taking credit for Trump's many successes. And the rest of the craziness of the left included "Sparticus" Cory Booker's comments. And let's not forget the New York Times anonymous op ed they published. Wow! I thought Mr. Franken's thoughts were worth sharing. part of the corrupt establishment. Many of the anti-Trump forces are stuck in the depression phase. Other than their protest rallies, they sulk in their bubbles. They'll never move to acceptance, the final stage. The question is whether they'll overcome their usual complacency and actually condescend to vote in November. If they do not and decide that Trump is in such trouble that control of Congress will be a cakewalk, they'll get another pie in the face. Their dreams of rescue by Bob Mueller will be dashed. Donald Trump will stay in office. They, in short, will have blown it. To quote Charles Dickens one more time, "the spring of hope" will become "the winter of despair."

Landowner awards were presented to five lucky landowners as part of Balloon Fest 2018. Winners each received a $100 Gift Card from Schnucks for allowing Balloonists to land on their property during the weekend events. After the flights, pilots fill out a landowner certificate for each property on which they landed. All of the certificates were turned in to the Chamber office and from those, five names were drawn. The awards were sponsored by Schnucks, 1 1 2 9 W. B ro a d w ay, Centralia. The main purpose of the landowners committee is to cultivate good will among landowners, balloonists, and the community so everyone can enjoy this spectacular family event. EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
A Message From Hell taught a lot on the afterMy sister and brotherin-law have been to “Hell and back.” One winter, to escape some of the frigid cold and snow of North Dakota, they took a luxury cruise to the Cayman Islands. Along the way they visited a small village called Hell. My sister sent me a postcard with the postmark of Hell and wrote a message from Hell, “We’ve been to Hell. It is hot here, so we are coming back.” Fortunately, my sister and brotherin-law had a round-trip ticket back home to North Dakota. The Word of God reveals that heaven is real and so is hell. Those who travel to hell have a one-way ticket with no hope of returning. Mark Twain said, “There are two things certain in life — taxes and death.” The most vital question is, “Where will you spend eternity after you die?” Jesus
Bell Toys Bell toys, a type of pull toy that had moving parts that rang a bell, were made in America just after the Civil War. The Gong Bell Co. of Connecticut made the first one. It was an iron fourwheel platform, holding a bell and an animal. The animal kicked or hit the bell when the platform moved. A popular bell toy featured an elephant that stepped on the bell to ma ke it r i ng . T he 9-1/2-inch-long toy is made of decorated metal. It was estimated to be worth about $800 to $1,200. Later bell toys used wood, tin or other metals and added realistic hair or animal hide. The toys all were painted. The 1880s-1890s were the golden age for the bell toys, and in the 1900s, copies were made of metal and eventually plastic. Today, the bell toys are wood or plastic made by Fisher Price or Playskool.
life. In Luke 16:29-31 Jesus gave a parable of a rich man and a beggar named Lazarus. The rich man, “was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But the beggar . . . was full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table.” Eventually they both died. Lazarus went to Paradise or “Abraham’s Bosom.” The rich man went to Hades, where he was tormented in the flames of hell. He ultimately pleaded with “Father Abraham” to send someone to warn his five brothers of the awful reality of hell. Consider some truths that Jesus taught on the afterlife in Luke 16. DEATH IS CERTAIN TO ALL. Rich or poor, young or old, all have an appointment with death. No amount of money can redeem us from death and the pit. We have a vivid
*** Q: I have dishes with bowls that look like heads of lettuce and plates that are a single lettuce leaf. They are marked with the signature "Dodie Thayer." Can you tell me anything about them? A: Large leaves probably were one of the first "plates" used at a feast. So it is not surprising that plates were shaped like cabbage or lettuce leaves by the 1600s. Leaf-shaped European majolica plates were made by Delft, and by the 18th-century they also were crafted by English potteries Wedgwood, Longton Hall, Chelsea and Minton, and French potteries Jacob Petit and Palissy. There was Etruscan Majolica from Pennsylvania, and modern giftware items like California Dodie Thayer ceramics. This Palm Beach dishware was made during the 1960s and '70s. Dishes were made from molds of actual cabbage or lettuce leaves, or full heads of the vegetable. Pink, red,

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With your Arian charm quotient at an almost all-time high this week, plus all the facts to back you up, you just might win over the last doubters to your proposal. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might be in line for that job change you applied for. But be advised that you could be called on to defend your qualifications against supporters of other applicants. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a new approach to an old idea is one way to get beyond that workplace impasse. No such problems in your personal life, where things continue to flow smoothly. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be more forthcoming about your feelings concerning a proposed change either in your workplace or in your personal life. Your opinions are valuable. Don’t keep them hidden. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A changing situation in your life needs more patience than you appear to be willing to offer. Allowing it to develop at its own pace is the wisest course you can take at this time. Surrendering a Pet DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I recently saw a viral video taken by a resident of a neighborhood where pets are regularly abandoned, likely because of its location next to some woodland. The resident watched as a car pulled up and deposited three confused, scared dogs at the edge of the woods. Even though the resident was standing right there and telling them where to legally surrender their dogs, the owners drove away. Many pet owners do not know that there are ways to safely surrender their pets, if they cannot care for them, in several U.S. municipalities. Owners can get guidance on surrendering their pet by talking to their veterinarians, contacting the local shelter or contacting a nonprofit organization like

the ASPCA. These individuals and organizations can provide. Please let your readers know that these resources are available. — Pet Mom in Boise, Idaho DEAR PET MOM: Thank you for reminding all of us of the importance of making sure pets are cared for, even when circumstances get tough. Readers, in many cities and states, abandoning an animal is illegal. But worse than that, it is unspeakably cruel. Being abandoned is traumatic for dogs and cats, who can quickly fall victim to predators or disease. Exotic pets can wreak havoc on the ecosystem, as boa constrictors have in Florida. Animal Humane Society, a Minnesota-based animal welfare organization, has a good guide to surrendering a pet, plus alternatives like rehoming pets (www.animalhumanesociety.org). All Breed Rescue in Ve r m o n t ( w w w. a l l breedrescuevt.com) has great information as well. Learn your options by searching your local area online or talking to your vet. Don't just abandon a pet.
