Centralia Cultural Society’s Grease Now Playing By Cathy Stuehmeier

If you missed last weekend's performance of the C entralia Cultural Society's production of Grease, it's not too late. And I can speak firsthand, it's one of the best productions I've ever seen. So trust, you don't want to miss this one. From Director Rob Jackson to Choreographer Dylan Stanley, cast, vocal ensemble, set, band, designers and everyone else, I can't say enough good about this worthwhile evening of fabulous entertainment. How lucky we are to have this kind of talent available. One thing for sure, there's a lot that goes into a production like this, and

Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School began its 15th year with an enrollment of 120 students. The school continues to expand its facilities and academic/extracurricular offerings to serve the growing student body. “We are always planning for future growth,” said Brent R u e t e r, D i r e c t o r o f Advancement and Admissions. “Our desire is that any student wishing to experience the blessings of a quality Christian education would inquire about Christ Our Rock.” CORLHS began the school year on Aug. 15. Let me make my feelings clear: The last thing I approve of is sexual, physical or mental abuse of any kind. However, there has to be substance to the facts, not just she said, he said. And in researching the facts, there's no evidence in the alleged Kavanaugh case, and in my opinion, this is all about Roe v. Wade. The headline last week on the Kavanaugh confirmation makes one's head spin. Many are asking, what's going on? In my opinion, that's pretty simple to answer: The Democrats are trying to delay the confirmation. The same thing that happened to Clarence Thomas. Who remembers Anita Hill? Judge Brett Kavanaugh has had background checks by the FBI six times and has been found to have an impeccable record. And at the final hour, Diane Feinstein steps up to save the day with a secret letter from an anonymous source that she's had possession of since July. It makes me question her ethics, and especially her motivation. Ms. Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, had an obligation to turn the letter over immediately. She, in fact, upended confirmation protocol by not doing her job. And as well, while questioning the Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh about abortion during his confirmation hearing, Feinstein (D-CA) grossly misstated statistics about abortion deaths before Roe v. Wade. Feinstein's distortion of data clearly was proof of her agenda to drive this new discussion from the left to derail the Kavanaugh vote by any means necessary. Thus in comes the sudden emergence of Christine Blasey Ford and her claim that Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982 when she was 15 and he was 17.

talking about, the same thing the other three said. What party? So on this kind of evidence there are those willing to ruin a man's life. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? On the flip side of this issue, I realize there are women as well as men that have been treated unjustly and very unfairly. I just don't subscribe to Ford's account, and I believe this is another Clarence Thomas case. But in the meantime, since the Democratic Party claims to be so interested in due process and protecting women, I recommend a good hard look at Keith Ellison, the high ranking Democrat and Deputy Chair of the DNC since 2017. He has been accused of physical and mental abuse by a girlfriend in 2016. Yet Kavanaugh protestors refuse to denounce Keith Ellison. The double standard is staggering. And stepping b ack further, too bad the left wasn't as determined to protect women's rights with the likes of Ted Kennedy, Cory Booker, and Bill Clinton, the king of sexual abuse. The final fact is both sides are very divided on the allegations against Brett Kavanaugh, and both are very passionate. One thing is for sure, this is a political football. So don't be surprised if there isn't more to come. So on Thursday, if Dr. Ford shows up, it should be the sideshow of the year, with the leftist and Me Too movement involved. Feinstein was so moved by the letter that she buried the author and content for months. To make matters worse, she did not ask Kavanaugh about this in her interview before the hearings. Nor did she question him during the hearings. So here's what we have so far: Many have jumped through hoops to accommodate Dr. Ford, the accuser. One excuse she had is she's afraid to fly, requiring more time. But she had no problem flying to participate in the Women's March in New York. Other times "weren't convenient," so her lawyers said. So it was finally reported she will grace all with her presence this Thursday. We'll see. Don't be shocked if that doesn't happen! Trust, something else will happen. The reality is this case hinges heavily on first person accounts and character testimony (or should I say character assassination). We have Ford and Kavanaugh's own statements. Ford didn't talk to anyone about what happened until 2012 in a therapy session. That's when she remembered. In those sessions, Kavanaugh's name wasn't mentioned. She said she was attacked by students of an elite boy's school. Ford's husband said she mentioned the attack to him in 2012 for the first time. Dr. Ford has said there are key details she doesn't remember. She believes the incident happened when she was 15, but she's not clear on ownership or location of the house. She said everyone was drinking. Mark Judge, said by accuser Ford to have been present during the attack, told the Senate, "I have no memory of any such thing," and hasn't a clue what she's talking about. And last but not least, Dr. Ford's fourth purported witness that she said was there claims no knowledge of what Ford's

Finding Grace Our oldest granddaughter’s middle name is Grace. The name Grace seems to be in vogue again. When she was just a toddler, she loved sleeping over. On one such occasion I went into her room to get her up for breakfast, but I couldn’t find her. After searching the house, I went back into her room and found her asleep under the bed. Many people rush frantically around seeking to please God without success, exhausted, and guilt ridden. But you will find grace resting under the bed of faith in Christ alone. (Hebrews 4:1-11) The most reoccurring theme of the Bible is grace. When God pronounced the destruction of the world by a flood, only Noah and his family were saved. Was it because they were so much more righteous than the rest of the human race? The Word of God reveals the saving factor of Noah, “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” (Genesis 6:8) Grace is lost on so many people because they do not understand or accept it. The apostle Paul was swimming in academic

degrees, religion, and selfrighteousness. But he had no rest nor peace. God gave him a revelation. “For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: Not of works lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) Noah couldn’t save himself, Paul couldn’t, and neither can we. Only God’s grace through faith in Christ’s finished work on the cross can save us. What a humbling, liberating truth. I remember, as a young boy, standing in line with my grandmother at the county township office where they were giving out free cheese and canned meat, hoping no one would recognize me. Why was I embarrassed? Pride — plain and simple. I didn’t want to be viewed as a charity case. One day I was standing in a checkout line at a store. The young lady in front of me pulled out some colorful food stamps to pay for her purchases. She kept her head down the whole time. I thought to myself, “If the government hadn’t already given her food stamps, I would gladly pay for her groceries.” I like giving to charity, but I have a hard

LOOKING FOR A CHURCH HOME? YOU’VE FOUND IT WITH US. “Next To And After” Sermon from September 23

In the book of Nehemiah, we read in chapter 1 how God moved on Nehemiah to rebuild the walls and the gates of Jerusalem that had been torn down and burnt with fire. The walls were what surrounded the city and kept the bad things out and the good things inside. On September 11, 2001 we saw a symbol of America torn down and burnt with fire. The reason God allowed Jerusalem to be attacked and its people taken captive was because they turned their backs on God. Is there any doubt that America has turned her back on God? And as a result, the “walls” of God’s protection that once surrounded America have been torn down… the walls of faith… the walls of the gospel… the walls of the church… and the walls of the Bible! Let’s face it, the enemy has completely taken over most of the cities in our nation. The heroin epidemic that at one time was only prevalent in major cities is now prevalent in little villages. Right here in the state of Illinois, the city of Chicago is a war zone every weekend. So far this year 390 people have already been killed. That is an average of 10 people every week!!! The walls have been torn down!

are in Christ. “That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:5-7) Recently, I saw this on Facebook, “God is so generous that he gives us grace that we do not deserve. Love that we cannot comprehend and mercy that we cannot resist.” Paul’s favorite greeting was, ‘Grace be to you and peace from God, our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.’” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

time receiving charity. Why is that? Pride? Why do so many people have difficulty excepting salvation, the forgiveness of sins by grace alone? Pride — pure and simple. We have an independent, sinful, prideful nature. We insist on trying to work for our salvation, whether by keeping the law, good works, or by our own goodness. It’s hard to admit that we can’t save ourselves. We need God! He doesn’t need us, but he wants us. That’s the grace of God. His unmerited favor, his ferocious love. (Romans 5:8) Recently, I was talking to a pastor. He regularly beats himself up mentally after making mistakes or listening to the criticisms of his parishioners. He often feels no good and worthless. He asked me what was wrong with him. I felt led to tell him that he needs to understand and ask the Holy Spirit to give him a revelation of God’s grace. He replied, “The sect or church I was raised in only taught on the law, they have no concept of grace.” Our selfworth is not dependent on our performance. “For you are not under the law, but under grace.” (Romans 6:14) God’s grace is actualized in our life when we put faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross. I pray you find grace today. “Surely he scorns the scorners but gives grace unto the lowly.” (Proverbs 3:4) Come to know who you

FALL SALE!

1/2 OFF LOW E GLASS WITH ARGON

Cooking With Lizzie

• LLow E Glass with Argon is offered to hhome owners at 1/2 Off with purchase oof optional exterior capping.

Down To Earth Soups

• SSpecial Low E promotion does not apply tto previously placed orders.

In the fall of the year, I head to the kitchen. Time spent there cooking became therapy for me years ago. It keeps my mind off the everyday woes of the world, keeping my hands busy. "Happy hands are busy hands." Who hasn't heard that favorite phrase! It keeps life simple for me. Cooking is far from complicated. In the fall and winter I love homemade soup, and when home I keep a pot simmering on the back burner of the stove. Served along with a slice of fresh homemade bread, there is nothing better and it brings you down to earth. I start with homemade chicken broth. I make it and freeze it for future flavoring for everything from chicken and noodles to homemade soups.

Homemade Chicken Broth 1 (4- 5 lb.) roasting chicken 2 medium onions, quartered 2 large carrots, halved 2 ribs celery, halved 1 green bell pepper, halved 1/2 cup fresh parsley sprigs

Chicken Corn Soup 6 T. (3/4 stick) butter, or rendered chicken fat 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup finely chopped celery 6 T. all-purpose flour 2 cups homemade chicken broth 1 (1 lb.) can cream-style corn

Bean Soup

1 lb. navy beans 3 qts. water 1 tsp. salt Pinch of baking soda 1/2 cup shredded carrot 1 cup chopped celery 2 medium onions, chopped 2 bay leaves

In large soup kettle, combine beans, water, salt and baking soda. Bring to boil, cover, and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat, skim off foam, re-cover, and let stand 2 hours. (The beans can also be soaked overnight if you prefer.) Add remaining ingredients except parsley, and simmer, covered, about 1½ to 2 hours. Watch beans, for cooking time will vary and beans should not get mushy. Remove ham bone, then dice any overly large pieces of meat and return to soup. Add parsley just before serving. This soup freezes very well. Makes 6 servings.

Country Potato Soup 1/4 tsp. grated nutmeg, rounded 1/4 tsp. dried marjoram, rounded (opt.) 1/4 tsp. celery salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1 cup milk 1 T. Worcestershire sauce 2 T. finely minced fresh parsley

Chop bacon coarsely. In deep soup kettle, saute bacon, celery, and onion over medium heat until onion is golden, about 5 minutes. Add potatoes, water, and seasonings; bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Mash potatoes slightly; about one-quarter of the cubes should still be whole. Remove bay leaf. Add milk, Worcestershire sauce, and parsley, and bring again to boil. Serve hot. Makes 4 – 6 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. Thousands of lifesaving blood donations have gone uncollected due to drive cancellations forced by the hurricane, but patients still need critical medical care As the American Red Cross responds to Hurricane Florence, providing food, shelter and comfort to those affected, individuals outside the affected areas are urged to help by giving blood or platelets to care for patients in the storm’s path and across the country. People can also help by making a financial donation to support relief efforts. Hurricane Florence’s wrath left catastrophic damage behind and also took a toll on blood and

platelet donations. Nearly 200 Red Cross blood drives in the Southeast were forced to cancel, resulting in more than 5,200 uncollected blood and platelet donations. “Natural disasters like hurricanes can disrupt blood drives and prevent donors from giving, but hospital patients still depend on lifesaving transfusions,” said Cliff Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services. “There is an especially critical need for platelets to help cancer patients and type O blood donations for ongoing patient care and emergencies. Every donation can be a lifeline for patients.”

How To Help Donors of all blood types are urged to help restore hope to patients across the country by making an appointment today to give blood or platelets. Appointments can be made by using the Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Financial donations are also needed and allow the Red Cross to provide disaster relief immediately. Help people affected by Hurricane Florence by visiting RedCross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word FLORENCE to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Up-to-date information about how the Red Cross is responding to Hurricane Florence is available at RedCross.org. Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed below. Clinton County Oct. 1, 2018: 2 p.m. - 7 p.m., Wesclin Middle School, 10003 State Route 160, Trenton, IL Fayette County Sept. 26, 2018: 3 p.m. - 7 p.m., Vandalia Elementary School, 1017 West Fletcher, Vandalia, IL Oct. 3, 2018: 2 p.m. - 7 p.m., Brownstown Elementary School, 421 South College Avenue, Brownstown, IL Oct. 10, 2018: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., St. Elmo High School, 300 West 12th Street, Saint Elmo, IL
