Jurassic Park Jeep Roams Territory In Mt. Vernon In 1993, dinosaurs “virtually” roamed the earth — via the blockbuster film, Jurassic Park. An entire generation of moviegoers were captivated by the science fiction adventure film based on Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel. One of those moviegoers was Jordan Burk of Mt. Vernon, Illinois. In an email interview with The Weekly, Burk explained how he came to drive a vehicle which local residents recognize as the “Jurassic Park Jeep.” “Since the first time I rode with my dad in his Wrangler,” writes Burk, “I’ve had a love for Jeeps, and I’ve loved movies even longer! When I graduated high school, I knew I had to put those two together.” During the winter of 2015, Burk began searching for a good donor Jeep for the project, and his patience was rewarded: he found one in the summer of 2017. “During my search,” he re-

members, “I started researching everything about the Jeeps from [the movie] Jurassic Park.” This led Burk to the Jurassic Park Motor Pool, a community of people who own Jurassic Park vehicles. “With their knowledge,” Burk writes, “I was able to piece together all of the correct parts for the Jeep.” The search for authentic pieces led to several road trips. “My family and I drove over three hours just to get the movie-accurate seats,” he recalls. Burk and his dad spent countless hours disassembling and reassembling the Jeep, and all the paint and body work was done by Landers Towing and Collision Center here in Mt. Vernon. The Jeep was completed in March 2018, just in time for Burk and his family to attend “Dino Days” in Branson, Missouri. They also participated in the first National Meet-up of the Jurassic Park Motor Pool, which coincided with

the release of the movie Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. “Driving this Jeep has been an absolute blast,” writes Burk, “and the smiles it puts on people’s faces makes it all

worth it.” Look for the Jurassic Park Jeep in the Mt. Vernon Fall Fest Parade this Saturday, September 29, at 10:00 a.m. in downtown Mt. Vernon.

Upcoming Benefit For Larry Mooney

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

— Oscar Wilde

Larry Mooney is a lifelong Jefferson County resident, having spent most of his life in Dix where he still resides with his wife Connie. Larry has served the public for many years, first at Rome Grade School where he and Connie taught for over thirty years. After retiring from Rome, Larry went on to teach math at Rend Lake College. He also serves as Dix Village President and as a Deacon at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. On May 26 while visiting Hickory, North Carolina for a family wedding, Larry suffered a heart attack. He was transferred from a local hospital to Wake Forest Medical Center, where he underwent triple bypass

surgery and a major aorta repair. Larry spent the next month at Wake Forest before being transferred by ambulance on June 29 to White Oaks in Mount Vernon for rehabilitation. He currently remains at White Oaks until he is able to return to his home. Throughout this journey, insurance has not covered all necessary medical expenses, leaving Larry and Connie to cover portions of his healthcare out of their own pockets. Because of Larry’s impact on his community, his friends and family have come together to host a benefit to help raise the funds to cover those expenses which insurance did not. This Benefit will be

held on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Rome Grade School. The benefit will include a pulled pork supper from 4 to 7 p.m. and a silent auction and carnival games from 5 to 8 p.m. Larry’s friends and family are asking for help in putting this benefit on. Here are a few ways you can assist them. 1. Donate Items for the silent auction. 2. Donate directly to the Mooneys via Peoples National Bank. (Ask for the Mooney Benefit Account.) 3. Purchase event tickets at either of the ByrdWatson locations in Mt. Vernon or the Dix–Kell water office. 4. Volunteer your time at the event.

Finding Grace

of the world by a flood, only Noah and his family were saved. Was it because they were so much more righteous than the rest of the human race? The Word of God reveals the saving factor of Noah, “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” (Genesis 6:8) Grace is lost on so many people because they do not understand or accept it. The apostle Paul was swimming in academic degrees, religion, and self-righteousness. But he had no rest nor peace. God gave him a revelation. “For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: Not of works lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) Noah couldn’t save himself, Paul couldn’t, and

Our oldest granddaughter’s middle name is Grace. The name Grace seems to be in vogue again. When she was just a toddler, she loved sleeping over. On one such occasion I went into her room to get her up for breakfast, but I couldn’t find her. After searching the house, I went back into her room and found her asleep under the bed. Many people rush frantically around seeking to please God without success, exhausted, and guilt ridden. But you will find grace resting under the bed of faith in Christ alone. (Hebrews 4:1-11) The most reoccurring theme of the Bible is grace. When God pronounced the destruction

neither can we. Only God’s grace through faith in Christ’s finished work on the cross can save us. What a humbling, liberating truth. I remember, as a young boy, standing in line with my grandmother at the county township office where they were giving out free cheese and canned meat, hoping no one would recognize me. Why was I embarrassed? Pride — plain and simple. I didn’t want to be viewed as a charity case. One day I was standing in a checkout line at a store. The young lady in front of me pulled out some colorful food stamps to pay for her purchases. She kept her head down the whole time. I thought to myself, “If the government

3

hadn’t already given her food stamps, I would gladly pay for her groceries.” I like giving to charity, but I have a hard time receiving charity. Why is that? Pride? Why do so many people have difficulty excepting salvation, the forgiveness of sins by grace alone? Pride — pure and simple. We have an independent, sinful, prideful nature. We insist on trying to work for our salvation, whether by keeping the law, good works, or by our own goodness. It’s hard to admit that we can’t save ourselves. We need God! He doesn’t need us, but he wants us. That’s the grace of God. His unmerited favor, his ferocious love. (Romans 5:8)

Recently, I was talking to a pastor. He regularly beats himself up mentally after making mistakes or listening to the criticisms of his parishioners. He often feels no good and worthless. He asked me what was wrong with him. I felt led to tell him that he needs to understand and ask the Holy Spirit to give him a revelation of God’s grace. He replied, “The sect or church I was raised in only taught on the law, they have no concept of grace.” Our self-worth is not dependent on our performance. “For you are not under the law, but under grace.” (Romans 6:14) God’s grace is actualized in our life when we put faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross.

I pray you find grace today. “Surely he scorns the scorners but gives grace unto the lowly.” (Proverbs 3:4) Come to know who you are in Christ. “That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:5-7) Recently, I saw this on Facebook, “God is so generous that he gives us grace that we do not deserve. Love that we cannot comprehend and mercy that we cannot resist.” Paul’s favorite greeting was, ‘Grace be to you and peace from God, our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.’” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Cooking With Lizzie

Shopper's Weekly Staff Photo

Just north of Mt. Vernon, Talia Campbell has opened a brand-new event venue designed to accommodate up to 400 guests. The facility boasts unique features such as a Groom’s Room

complete with ping-pong table, oversized games of Jenga and other favorites, and an 18-foot-high sliding door which provides breathtaking photo opportunities. A Pocket Full of

Sunshine enjoyed a large crowd and beautiful weather for its Business After Hours and Ribbon Cutting event on Thursday, September 20.

In the fall of the year, I head to the kitchen. Time spent there cooking became therapy for me years ago. It keeps my mind off the everyday woes of the world, keeping my hands busy. "Happy hands are busy hands." Who hasn't heard that favorite phrase! It keeps life simple for me. Cooking is far from complicated. In the fall and winter I love homemade soup, and when home I keep a pot simmering on the back burner of the stove. Served along with a slice of fresh homemade bread, there is nothing better and it brings you down to earth. I start with homemade chicken broth. I make it and freeze it for future flavoring for everything from chicken and noodles to homemade soups.

Down To Earth Soups

1 (4- 5 lb.) roasting chicken 2 medium onions, quartered 2 large carrots, halved 2 ribs celery, halved 1 green bell pepper, halved 1/2 cup fresh parsley sprigs

6 whole cloves 2 bay leaves 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. white pepper 3 -3½ quarts water

Place chicken, including neck and giblets (but not liver), in large stockpot. Add rest of ingredients. Water should cover chicken completely. Cover and bring to boil over high heat; then skim off froth as it forms on top. Reduce heat and simmer 2 hours. Remove chicken from pot, allow to cool a bit, then remove meat and skin, reserving meat for another use (soup salad, or sandwich filling). Return bones and skin to pot. Simmer broth, covered, 2 hours more. Strain broth through sieve into bowl, pressing vegetables and bones with rubber spatula to extract any liquid. Chill broth overnight in refrigerator and skim off fat. Freeze any stock that will not be used within 2 to 3 days in 1-quart containers. Makes 8 – 9 cups.

Let me make my feelings clear: The last thing I approve of is sexual, physical or mental abuse of any kind. However, there has to be substance to the facts, not just she said, he said. And in researching the facts, there's no evidence in the alleged Kavanaugh case, and in my opinion, this is all about Roe v. Wade. The headline last week on the Kavanaugh confirmation makes one's head spin. Many are asking, what's going on? In my opinion, that's pretty simple to answer: The Democrats are trying to delay the confirmation. The same thing that happened to Clarence Thomas. Who remembers Anita Hill? Judge Brett Kavanaugh has had background checks by the FBI six times and has been found to have an impeccable record. And at the final hour, Diane Feinstein steps up to save the day with a secret letter from an anonymous source that she's had possession of since July. It makes me question her ethics, and especially her motivation. Ms. Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, had an obligation to turn the letter over immediately. She, in fact, upended confirmation protocol by not doing her job. And as well, while questioning the Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh about abortion during his confirmation hearing, Feinstein (D-CA) grossly misstated statistics about abortion deaths before Roe v. Wade. Feinstein's distortion of data clearly was proof of her agenda to drive this new discussion from the left to derail the Kavanaugh vote by any means necessary. Thus in comes the sudden emergence of Christine Blasey Ford and her claim that Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982 when she was 15 and he was

17. Feinstein was so moved by the letter that she buried the author and content for months. To make matters worse, she did not ask Kavanaugh about this in her interview before the hearings. Nor did she question him during the hearings. So here's what we have so far: Many have jumped through hoops to accommodate Dr. Ford, the accuser. One excuse she had is she's afraid to fly, requiring more time. But she had no problem flying to participate in the Women's March in New York. Other times "weren't convenient," so her lawyers said. So it was finally reported she will grace all with her presence this Thursday. We'll see. Don't be shocked if that doesn't happen! Trust, something else will happen. The reality is this case hinges heavily on first person accounts and character testimony (or should I say character assassination). We have Ford and Kavanaugh's own statements. Ford didn't talk to anyone about what happened until 2012 in a therapy session. That's when she remembered. In those sessions, Kavanaugh's name wasn't mentioned. She said she was attacked by students of an elite boy's school. Ford's husband said she mentioned the attack to him in 2012 for the first time. Dr. Ford has said there are key details she doesn't remember. She believes the incident happened when she was 15, but she's not clear on ownership or location of the house. She said everyone was drinking. Mark Judge, said by accuser Ford to have been present during the attack, told the Senate, "I have no memory of any such thing," and hasn't a clue what she's talking about. And last but not least, Dr. Ford's fourth

The Shoppers Weekly – Mt. Vernon Area case. But in the meantime, since the Democratic Party claims to be so interested in due process and protecting women, I recommend a good hard look at Keith Ellison, the high ranking Democrat and Deputy Chair of the DNC since 2017. He has been accused of physical and mental abuse by a girlfriend in 2016. Yet Kavanaugh protestors refuse to denounce Keith Ellison. The double standard is staggering. And stepping back further, too bad the left wasn't as determined to protect women's rights with the likes of Ted Kennedy, Cory Booker, and Bill Clinton, the king of sexual abuse. The final fact is both sides are very divided on the allegations against Brett purported witness that she Kavanaugh, and both are said was there claims no very passionate. knowledge of what Ford's One thing is for sure, this talking about, the same is a political football. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The changing season brings new experiences as well as challenges for the ever-adventurous Aries. Your social life expands, as do the opportunities at your workplace. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That recent period of uncertainty has passed. You now can now feel more confident about making decisions, especially those that relate to an important personal relationship. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you might be faced with a number of tasks on your to-do list, try to take time out to enjoy the arts. Music, especially, can be soothing to the sensitive soul of a Gemini. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A disagreement with a colleague or friend is best resolved with open and frank discussion. Trying to force the other party to see things your way is bound to backfire. LEO (July 23 to August 22) That Leonine pride might be ruffled by a colleague’s challenge to one of your pet ideas. But stop growling and listen. You could learn something that will work to your advantage. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone in authority might decide to select you as a candidate for a project that carries more responsibilities. Be prepared to show why you’re the right choice for the job. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) That new workplace problem should be dealt with as soon as possi-

ble. Leaving it unresolved for too long could lead to an even more unsettling and time-consuming situation. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to do some fancy juggling to keep both your work responsibilities and personal obligations on track. But ultimately, you’ll work it all out, as you always do. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might hear some upsetting things about a situation in your life. But don’t be swayed by talk. Demand proof before making any decisions on the matter. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t risk depleting those precious energy levels by taking on more tasks than you can realistically handle. Also, remember to ask for help when you need it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It might be difficult for the Aquarian who is used to giving advice to take counsel when offered. But it’s a good idea to listen to what trusted friends feel you should know. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Things might be a little unsettled as you move through a period of reassessment. But once you get your priorities sorted out, you should be ready to tackle an important decision. Decorative Screens Decorative screens were being used in rooms in China by the 7th century. But they were not used in Europe until the 1500s. It wasn't until the 17th century that they became popular. Screens originally were used to protect those nearby from the heat of a fireplace or the cold from a drafty door. Europeans found many uses -- screening a bed, acting as a fake wall or hiding an unattractive view. Movies often have a scene with a star changing costumes behind a screen in the dressing room. In today's modern house, the screen can act as a giant painting exhibited in a bare corner. Recently, Neal Auctions of New Orleans sold a three-panel Art Nouveau screen for $28,060. A picture of pink flamingos standing in blue water was painted on the front. Marie Hull (1890-1980), a wellknown Southern artist, painted the birds. She is known for her pictures of birds and flowers. *** Q: My mother-in-law presented me with a family treasure, a reverse painting on glass picturing a landscape that includes a church with a steeple. A real clock is set in the steeple, but it no longer runs. The painting is about 12 inches wide by 18 inches high. Is it really very valuable? Should I try to have the clock fixed? A: Reverse paintings on glass come in many sizes and qualities. The pictures with clocks were popular from the 1890s to 1910. The artists were run-of-the-mill

painters who painted the same picture over and over. Many were made in Germany. The painting is fragile and needs special care. The value is determined by condition. If stored in a damp or very hot or cold place, the paint will crack or peel and may be lost. Sometimes a large piece of loose paint can be saved. Often the frames have been repainted. A reverse picture with no clock is worth about $150. The clock doesn't add much more value. *** Current Prices WWI rations tin, bacon, "Model of 1916" embossed on lid, green paint, rounded
