Wamac’s Centralia #5 Mine Memorial By Cameron Wilson
On March 25, 1947 one of the worst workplace disasters took place at Mine No. 5 in Wamac, Illinois. A massive explosion and subsequent poisonous gas took the lives of 111 out of the 142 men working in the mine. Two years ago local mason Josh Lyons donated his time and skill to construct a new memorial in the Wamac City Park to remember those our communities lost. Today Josh returns with helper David Gibson to repair and refurbish the weathered monument. Today more than ever it is important for all of us to find ways that we can use our skills to help better the community. No newly elected official or changed city policy can do more good for our communities than good people who want to help. Pictured (L to R) are Lyons and Gibson. The Weekly Staff Photo

Marion County Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Reunion announces 2019 honoree
Marion County Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Reunion Chairman Brian Deckard announced recently that former Lt. Col. Ronald J. Hall has been selected as the 2019 camp honoree for the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Reunion. The tradition began in 1883 when veterans would set up an actual campsite and name it for a former veteran to honor their service and memory. Lt. Col. Hall was twice a Commander of the Luther B. Easley American Legion Post 128 in Salem in the 1970’s and 1990’s. His wife Shirley (Kramer) Hall is still an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Salem. “We are excited to announce the selection of former American Legion Post 128 Commander Ron Hall as our honoree this year,” said Brian Deckard, Reunion Chairman. “I didn’t know Ron personally but I hear nice stories about his work to have the

We are fortunate to have his wife Shirley still involved with the American Legion Auxiliary supporting our activities for our veterans.” Lt. Col. Hall was a veteran of the Korean conflict. During his first year of the conflict he was a member of the 7th Calvary Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division and attained the rank of sergeant. After returning to civilian life, he served in the Illinois National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve, where he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel, Signal Corps. Mr. Hall worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired as a supervisor of maintenance in Quincy, IL. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, American Legion Post 128, Veterans of Foreign Wars

City of Centralia hosts sucessful job fair
By Cameron Wilson
On Wednesday, June 5 the City of Centralia hosted a Job Fair to try and help match employers with potential employees. The event was hosted at the C entralia Recreation Complex located at 115 East 2nd Street. The Department for Economic Development created this event in the hopes that they could help employers who are struggling to find good candidates as well as employees who are looking for something different. The event lasted from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and maintained a steady flow of activity throughout the day.
Rose Aldag-McVey stated that, “Since the event started, each year has gotten more successful.” Some of the statistics she provided us include, of the 31 participating employers, 92% stated that they found the potential candidates they needed. Some employers stated after the fair that the candidates not only met their expectations, but far exceeded them, with many having multiple qualified candidates to choose from. Of the around 200 job seekers that attended the fair, 98% stated they felt confident that they had found a potential job. It is the mission of The

Centralia Department of Economic Development to use events such as these to promote the local economy and give the talented work-
force in our community more opportunity. The city also provides resources to assist both job seekers and employers for many em-
ployment needs. They also maintain online services to assist in searching, applying, and writing resumes. For more information

Sina members learn about pickleball
By Tina Suarez The Southern Illinois Networking Association met at the Centralia Recreation Complex on June 6 at 7 a.m. The meeting was opened by President Mike Chambers. Mike led the group in a prayer and pledge. A group discussion was held among the members that were present. The main focus with all of the rain that we have been having almost daily was how the crop insurance worked for the farmers. The 50/50 drawing was held with Jim Brown being the winner. Everyone then went to the Recreation Complex gym to learn how to play Pickleball. Pickleball is held

I’m the first to tell you I love summer for a number of reasons, one being all the fresh veggies. One of my favorite places to go in the summer is the farmers markets which are very popular all over the South. So this week I decided to share some old family recipes that are tried and true. 6 small Italian eggplants (2 lbs. total) 2 medium onions, cut lengthwise into 1/4-inch thick wedges 1/4 cup plus 3 T. extra-virgin olive oil 1 large tomato, coarsely chopped, plus 1½ cups drained chopped tomatoes
1/3 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1/3 cup chopped fresh basil 3 T. fresh lemon juice 1 T. plus 2 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt 1/3 cup water
Preheat oven to 400°F. Halve eggplants lengthwise and score flesh 1/2 inch deep in a crosshatch pattern to make l-inch squares (do not cut through skin). Arrange eggplant halves, cut sides up, in a large roasting pan and season with salt. Cook onions in 3 T. oil in a large nonstick skillet over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in tomatoes, parsley, basil, lemon juice, 2 tsp. sugar, and salt. Divide topping among eggplant halves, mounding in centers. Stir together water, remaining 1/4 cup oil, and remaining tablespoon sugar until sugar is dissolved, then add to roasting pan. Cover pan tightly with foil and bake in middle of oven, basting eggplants every 15 minutes with cooking liquid, 45 minutes. Uncover and bake until eggplants are tender (they will collapse and flatten slightly) and cooking liquid is reduced and beginning to caramelize, about 40 minutes more. Serve hot or at room temperature, drizzled with pan juices. Serves 6.
Heirloom Tomato Tart For black pepper parmesan pastry: 1¼ cups all-purpose flour 3/4 stick (6 T.) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 2 T. cold vegetable shortening
2 T. freshly grated parmesan 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1/4 tsp. salt 2 to 4 T. ice water
For filling: 3/4 lb. fresh mozzarella (not unsalted),very thinly sliced 1/2 cup pesto
2 lb. mixed-heirloom tomatoes, sliced 1/8 inch thick Equipment: pie weights or raw rice
Make pastry: Blend together flour, butter, shortening, parmesan, pepper, and salt in a bowl with your fingertips or a pastry blender (or pulse in a food processor) until mixture resembles coarse meal with some roughly pea-size lumps. Drizzle 2 tablespoons ice water over and gently stir with a fork (or pulse in food processor) until incorporated. Gently squeeze a small handful: If it doesn’t hold together without falling apart, add more water, 1 tablespoon at a time, stirring (or pulsing) after each addition until incorporated, continuing to test. (Do not overwork dough, or it will become tough.) Turn out dough onto a work surface and divide into 2 portions. With heel of your hand, smear each portion once in a forward motion to help distribute fat. Gather both portions of dough into 1 ball, then pat into a disk. Chill, wrapped in plastic wrap, until firm, about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 375°F. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface into a 12-inch round and fit into a 9-inch round tart pan with a removable rim. Roll rolling pin over top of pan to trim dough flush with rim. Lightly prick tart shell with a fork. Line shell with foil and fill with pie weights or rice. Bake in middle of oven 20 minutes. Carefully remove foil and weights and bake until golden, about 15 minutes more. Cool in pan on a rack.

SIHF Healthcare Raises Awareness During Men’s Health Month SIHF Healthcare is raising awareness for boys and men to make their health a priority. This comes as June is Men’s Health Month. Boys and men need to be on top of their health before it becomes a cause for concern. From an early age, boys and men should establish themselves with a doctor. “I would remind men that the data is always shifting and that decisions
made to detect and prevent illness should be made in collaboration with their healthcare provider,” says Seth Hahs, MD in Internal Me d i c i n e f o r S I H F Healthcare in Salem, Ill. “Presently, the recommendations regarding disease processes specific to men, such as prostate cancer, are in favor of routine attempts to detect the cancer early.” Regular preventive tests and screenings are necessary, depending on age and
risk factor. Examples include blood pressure screenings, cardiovascular screenings, colorectal cancer exams, prostate cancer exams, and testicular cancer exams. “I recommend striving for realistic health-related goals for sleep, diet, and exercise, keeping in mind those things have to be prioritized with the other demands placed on patients,” Hahs adds.” You can easily make your
health a priority with the help of our providers at SIHF Healthcare. Our medical professionals service over two dozen locations and specialize in family and internal medicine. Great insurance.
Democrats are flooding Iowa right now, hoping to influence and increase their chances in the crowded field of democratic presidential candidates, all hopeful to be at number one in the 2020 election. Nineteen of the 23 democratic presidential candidates attended the first big political event in Iowa in the 2020 race. It was a “Hall of Fame” dinner where each gave a five-minute speech. It was noted that Joe Biden was absent — he was attending his granddaughter’s graduation — although he will be in Iowa on Tuesday as will President Donald Trump. The polls are showing that, at this point, in the lead among the Democrats is Biden at 24%, followed by Sanders at 16%, Warren at 15%, Beto at 14%, and Harris at 7%. Many Democrats are dismissing the polls, arguing there’s plenty of time in this race, and it’s too early to pay attention to polls. My early prediction is the front runner will be Joe Biden because I truly believe most Democrats across the nation want a moderate, thinking it’s their best shot to beat Trump. And while on the subject of Democrats and the 2020 election, there are still 50 Democrats in Congress calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump; 41 of those very Democrats hold seats in
districts Trump won! I say let them proceed. This very move will do nothing but help Trump in 2020, and as the pressure builds to launch an impeachment inquiry, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi wants to see Trump in prison. Her comment was, “I don’t want to see Trump impeached. I want to see him in prison.” This coming from a woman whose state (California) looks like a third world country. If you want to take your life in your own hands, take a trip to Los Angeles or San Francisco. Wow! I have concluded that most Democrats are smart enough to get it and are absolutely not supportive of this new, progressive Democratic Party. To continue to push this movement to impeach and to follow through will absolutely be a political disaster for the Democrats! I rest my case, and time will tell. On to this week’s big hearings. The House Judiciary Committee set congressional hearings on the Mueller report with Nixon White House Counsel John Dean. The first hearing was scheduled for Monday, June 10, featuring long time Trump hater Dean. There will be a series of hearings scheduled by another longtime Trump hater, Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler. All the hearings are related to Special Counsel
Robert Mueller’s Russian report. The Democrat led committee revealed its new schedule as calls grew louder for impeachment from a list of Democratic lawmakers and presidential candidates. Dean was a central player in the Watergate scandal and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in 1973. He also cooperated with the Watergate special prosecutor and testified against other Watergate figures. In my opinion, Dean’s selection shows a far reach by House Democrats. Another interesting fact about John Dean is he was sworn in to testify on the four t h day of Brett Kavanaugh’s hearing before members of the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 7, 2018. My question is, what the hell does John Dean know about the Mueller reports? What qualifies him to testify? What notable information could he have to add to this $30 million, two-and-a-half-year-old witch hunt other than his part of the “I hate Trump groupies”? So with all that said, on to the southern border (Mexico) and the tariffs. John Sanders, Chief Operating Officer of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, is saying, “We are in a full state of emergency at the border.”
Sadly, the Democrats are blaming the Republicans and the Republicans are blaming the Democrats. Do they really enjoy “this game” they are playing with our country? But in the meantime, Mexico’s President has agreed to patrol the southern border to stop the insane, mass amount of illegals crossing over our borders, bleeding our country of everything from healthcare to housing. As promised, Trump has backed off of the tariffs that were supposed to start on June 10. Both sides, Mexico and the U.S., have agreed to meet for the next 90 days and follow through with their agreement — including Mexico keeping those who are seeking asylum in the U.S. — until their case is heard. Trump’s original threat was if Mexico didn’t stop the bleeding over from their side of the border, on June 10 the U.S. would impose a 5% tariff on all goods coming into our country from Mexico. The tariff would continue until illegal migrants coming through Mexico and into our country would stop. The tariff was to be gradually increased until the i l l e g a l i m m i g r at i o n problem was remedied. Time will tell. Until next week. EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
The Return of Jesus
In an interview, the Prime Minister of Israel said that with Iran’s procurement of nuclear weapons, there is no longer any security in the world. Jesus prophesied that in “the last days men’s hearts would fail them for fear of those things that are coming upon the world.” (Luke 21:26-28) In the face of economic and political turmoil, many people are gripped with a sense of fear and hopelessness. But the Word of God calls followers of Christ to live in the light of the blessed hope — the soon return of the Lord Jesus Christ. (Titus 2:13) Why do most followers of Christ believe Jesus is coming again and soon? Because Jesus told us so. Either Jesus Christ was telling the truth or lying. In the book of Revelation, Jesus announces to the world, “Behold, I come quickly.” In Revelation 22 he warns and encourages us three times that he is

coming soon. Some say that it’s been over 2,000 years since Jesus said that he is coming again and soon. Where is he coming? Peter tells us, “The Lord God is not slack concerning his promise but . . . is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (II Peter 3:8-9) The Word of God tells us that with God “One day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.” Jesus says that no man knows the day nor hour of Jesus’ return. But he gave us certain signs to indicate the season of his appearing. Jesus’ soon return brings hope to his followers. He said in John 14:1-3, “Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions . . . I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go away, I will come again to receive you unto myself that where I am you may be also.” Do you have that blessed hope?

Consider some of the signs that Jesus gave concerning his soon return. The SIGN OF NOAH. (Matthew 24:37-29; Luke 17:26-28) Noah warned of God’s judgment coming on the earth. The people mocked Noah’s preaching of repentance and salvation. They went about business as usual until God sent the flood and all were destroyed except Noah and his family. God’s Word warns, “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation.” (Hebrews 2:3) Jesus is our ark of salvation. Today many people live as those in Noah’s day. The SIGN OF NATURE. Jesus warned that there will be an increase of earthquakes, famines, and seas in turmoil. (Matthew 24:7; Luke 21:25) Joel and Peter both point to signs in the sky. (Acts 2:19-20) The sun, moon, and stars are signs of great changes to come. The SIGN OF NATIONS and ethnic groups at war. (Matthew 26:6-7; Ezekiel 38-39) Is World War III on the horizon? The SIGN OF THE NATION OF ISRAEL. (Matthew 24:18-20, 32-34) In 70 AD, Israel ceased to exist as a nation. But in 1948 God miraculously brought the nation of Israel back into existence again in one day. This is an in-

credible sign. Jesus said that, “This generation shall not pass away until ALL of these things take place.” (Matthew 24:33-34) I believe we are living in this generation! The SIGN OF ALL NATIONS HEARING THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST. “And the Good News about the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14) We are nearer to this being fulfilled than ever before. The SIGN OF “NAYSAYERS.” The Word of God teaches that in the last days there will be multitudes of mockers ridiculing the preaching of the soon return of the Lord Jesus from heaven. Sadly, even some in the church are “nay-sayers: who mock Christ’s return. (Jude 18) Jesus said he is coming again and soon. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ — REJOICE!! LOOK UP!! Your redemption draws near. If you are not a believer or are not ready to meet Jesus — REPENT and receive him as Lord and Savior today. “Maranatha — the Lord comes!” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Sermon Summary: June 9, 2019 Sermon Title: “Grown Ups”
Jesus made the statement, “Unless you are converted and become like little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus wasn’t telling us to act like little children, or react like little children, He was telling us to have the innocence of little children. Little children don’t know anything about racism… that is a learned behavior. Little children don’t like or dislike someone because of their money, power or prestige… that is a learned behavior. Little children don’t hold grudges. They can be fighting one minute and hugging on each other the next. Little children don’t post stuff on Facebook with hidden meanings as a way to dig at someone they don’t like! Pastor Steve Upchurch Visit us next Sunday! LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although your financial picture begins to brighten, “thrift” and “caution” are still the watchwords for fiscally astute Leos and Leonas to live by. Expect news about a family matter. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Before you try to blame a colleague for a workplace problem, make sure you have the proof to back you up. Make some quiet inquiries on your own to try to solicit more information. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to cheer up a depressed
friend or downcast family member can be difficult. But keep at it, and your efforts should soon pay off in ways you might have never expected. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Taking a new look at an old and frequently recurring problem might lead you to consider making some surprising changes in the way you had been handling it up till now. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Despite what the naysayers might say, setting your sights on a new goal could be one of the smartest things the typically sagacious Sagittarian has done in a long time. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Rebuilding an unraveling relationship won’t be easy. But you can do it, if you really want to. Just remember to keep the lines of communication open between the two of you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new friendship could develop into a close relationship. Meanwhile, reassure an old friend who might be feeling neglected that he or she is still an important part of your life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might be feeling that you’re still in over your head as you continue trying to adjust to your new situation. But the pressures ease by week’s end, giving you time to come up for air. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for sensing the feelings of others. You might consider a career in some aspect of counseling. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
