Chairman of Balloon Fest 2018
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 29th annual Balloon Fest in Centralia, IL. I am serving as chairman of the 2018 Balloon Fest and it is with great pleasure that I have
Marcus Holland and Mandy Albers serving on the Executive Committee with me. Balloon Fest is under the direction of the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce of which Marcus Holland is the Executive Director. Carol Flanigan is the executive assistant and has been a driving force in planning all 29 Balloon Fests. The Executive Committee leads over 20 committees, and these committees are the heart of everything that happens
Marcus Holland
Executive Director The Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce
Whether you have been to Balloon Fest many times before, or this is your first
time, welcome to our community. Keep your eyes on the skies! Balloon events are scheduled for the morning or evening when the weather is calmer. There are four flights and two balloon glows scheduled during the festival. All balloon events are subject to weather conditions, so please follow us on Facebook @centraliaballoonfest for up-to-date happenings.

for the three day event. I want to give a great big THANKS to the steering committee and the hundreds of volunteers who make this event possible. Many beautiful balloons will take to the sky, including the special shaped balloons of Neptune, Claw’D, and Lindy. All will be floating across the majestic Foundation Park on the east side of Centralia. Opening the event will be the Centralia High School Marching Showcase and Choir. There will be four balloon races and two balloon glows throughout the 3 days. Our main stage entertainment includes
music by the “Jake Hoult Band” followed by an amazing fireworks display on Friday and “Walkin’ with Cash” on Saturday night. Each day the family picnic tent will have entertainment all day, and on Saturday an impersonator singing contest will be held. There will fantastic music for all to enjoy every day! Other events include the children’s area with games, bounce houses, CN’s L itt le Obie & Wamac’s Little Toot trains. We also have a craft fair, food vendors, martial arts demonstrations, car shows, and a cardboard boat race to keep everyone
busy. If flight conditions are favorable (dry, no storms in the area, and light winds), we will have a tethered balloon ride on Friday and Saturday evening. Over the last 29 years, Balloon Fest has continued to grow, and the number of visitors to our town and Foundation Park has soared. We welcome all of you to a magical event where many friendships have been made over the last nearly three decades and continue as we join together for yet another year. I hope you can join me, my committee, and all of our wonderful volunteers for a fantastic and fun-filled weekend.
Thank you to the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce, the major sponsors, balloon sponsors, all of our other sponsors and contributors, and the hundreds of volunteers who have dedicated so much time and energy to make your weekend special.
On Friday and Saturday evenings, there will be a hot air balloon set up for tethered rides. For $10 per person, your family can experience what it is like to take off and land in a hot air balloon and see the festival from a bird’s eye view. During non-balloon event times, there are many activities in the park: bands and musicians, craft fair, food vendors, children’s activity area, car shows, and more! Find a complete schedule at centraliaballoonfest.com. Outside of the park, we
welcome you to shop and visit our local businesses. If you have time while you are here, eat or drink at our locally-owned Chamber of Commerce member restaurants: Bonnie Café, Centralia House, Crooked Creek Winery, Dairy Q ue en, Fair ways at Greenview Golf Club, Jerry’s Grill and Bar, McDonalds Restaurants, Monical’s Pizza, Peking Chinese Restaurant, RAIL Coffee Room, Subway Restaurants, and Tequila Mexican Restaurants. With so much to do through the three-day fes-
tival, we hope you decide to stay at one of our Chamber of Commerce m e m b e r h o t e l s . In Centralia, the new Best Western Plus Hotel & Suites is on the west side of town and the Centralia Motel is located just south of beautiful downtown Centralia. We also have two hotels as members in neighboring communities, the Holiday Inn Express in Salem and the Drury Inn and Suites in Mt. Vernon. Balloon Fest is just one of our amazing events in Centralia. We hope you enjoy your stay and decide
to visit us again throughout the year. More information and a complete list of Chamber members can also be found on the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce website centraliachamber.com. Marcus Holland

Jake Hoult
J
Friday, Aug. 17 • 8:30 p.m.–10:00 p.m. Main Stage
ake Hoult is a Country Singer/Songwriter, born and raised in central Illinois. After taking several trips with his grandparents to Branson, Missouri, Jake fell in love with music. Jake began his musical journey at the age of four, performing at local talent shows, churches, and small events. Today, at 21 years old, Jake has had the pleasure of performing in front of audiences from all over the U.S. including venues in
Branson, Missouri and Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to doing country music, Jake also performs contemporary Christian/ gospel music. This gave him the opportunity to open for a number of popular Christian artists such as: Finding Favour, 7th Time Down, KUTLESS, Natalie Grant, and Matthew West. Ja ke is const ant ly working hard at his music career. He is currently attending Greenville Univer-
sity to attain his Bachelor's degree in Music Industry. Jake's high energy show includes a little bit of everything from country music (new and old), to classic rock 'n' roll to pop. His biggest musical influences include Elvis Presley, Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, and many more. Jake has grown in popularity among all ages in the last few years and always strives to put on a great show for his concert goers.

Lord and Savior and this great nation," says Jake. When not in the studio making new music, Jake is constantly working on new material and traveling on the road with his band. Performing alongside Jake, playing the fiddle and singing lead vocals, is
Mikayla Joy. Mikayla, like Jake, is an up and coming artist with her own music as well. The remainder of the other amazing band members include: Garrie Carlen (lead guitar, vocals), Kenny Waddell (bass), and Dale Brown (drums/percussion, vocals).

BALLOON FEST 2018 ENTERTAINMENT Johnny Cash Tribute
Walkin' with Cash
K
Saturday, Aug. 18 • 8:30 p.m.–10:00 p.m. Main Stage
eith Furry is well aware of the complexities surrounding Johnny Cash, in fact, he embraces them. “One of my favorite lines to describe Johnny Cash is from the book Cash by Rolling Stone magazine: "Sinner, Saint, Rebel, Voice of Protest, Man of Faith," says Furry, leader of the tribute band Walkin’ With Cash. Hailed as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Cash had that rarest of crossover appeals, having earned induction into the Rock n Roll, Country and Gospel Halls of Fame. Furry
captures those intricacies with a fan’s eagerness and a musician’s skill. From his note perfect trembling baritone voice to his all black outfits, every detail rings true during a Walkin’ With Cash show. Of course, much of Cash’s music, particularly toward the end of his stellar career, focused on moral questions and the search for redemption but Furry’s rendition of this often dark and mysterious superstar never translates into a dour, over-serious experience on stage. Instead, Furry delves deep into the Cash catalog, shining a spotlight on
every corner of this legendfrom his rockabilly beginnings to his flirty duets with wife June Carter Cash, expertly recreated in the Walkin’ With Cash performances by Jan Daily. It would be hard to portray Johnny Cash and not be somewhat playful and heartwarming. “He had a wicked sense of humor,” Furry says. “I’m there to have a good time and it shows.” For the enthusiastic, late-blooming Furry, there’s no other way to perform. Furry originally unveiled his imitation of Johnny Cash on a lark and a new passion
was born. He was a percussionist and backup vocalist for a local Elvis tribute band, The Blue Suede Crew. “The lead singer needed a break to change costumes during the show and asked if I knew anyone that could sing like Johnny Cash. I surprised him by belting out “Folsom Prison Blues” and that’s how I started my tribute to The Man in Black,” Furry remembers. Along with Scott Wattles, as Elvis, The Blue Suede Crew became an almost instant regional draw and even recorded at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, TN, birthplace

“I try to keep it as true to the original as possible,” Furry says. “Cash’s musical career was over a 50 year span and we cover as much as possible, from the memorable 1954 hit single “Hey Porter” to “Rusty Cage” (from the Grammy winning 1996 project “Unchained”) and all the heavy hitters in between.”

of the mythical careers of both Cash and Presley. Perhaps, inevitably, Furry’s star continued to rise and he subsequently established a stand-alone project devoted to The Man in Black called Walkin’ With Cash. The group promptly established its own network of fans across the area.

The Epics
Saturday, Aug. 18 • 3:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Family Picnic Tent
T
he history of the Epics has its beginning with the original members being students at Centralia Township High School in the 1960s. At first, they just played for fun. Founding members Fred Smith and Steve Kinder played in a surf instrumental band, "The Continentals" along with drummer Pat Parker and Mike Garrison who had earlier been part of a
vocal quartet. The combination of the two acts evolved into The Epics of the mid Sixties. In the early 2000s the band reformed and has been playing throughout southern Illinois ever since. Original members Mike Garrison (vocals), Bob Fester (guitar) and Fred Smith (keyboards) have added Dennis Pracht on bass and Dan Kaufman on

drums to round off the lineup. The Epics will be playing the 1960s popular hits that you know and love under the Picnic Tent at Balloon Fest 2018 on Saturday, August 18 from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Epics always look forward to playing Balloon Fest and have lots of fun entertaining the crowds.

SCOTT MCCLINTON: BALLOONMEISTER
cott McClinton of Louisville, Kentucky will serve as Balloonmeister for the 29th annual event. Scott is a professional balloon pilot with 30 years experience. He has logged over 2,000 hours flying in multiple events in 38 states and 7 countries: Japan, Mexico, China, Canada, Australia and the U.S. Scott has served as Balloonmeister at other events, but this is his first year at Centralia Balloon Fest. Scott McClinton began his ballooning career in 1977 crewing for local balloons in Louisville, Kentucky while in high school, before he could drive a car. During the early years Scott crewed for local pilot John Freeman, who was a pioneer in the hot air balloon world and the second balloon pilot in Kentucky. Scott began to take pilot instruction from John as a junior in high school and continued into college. In 1987 Scott earned his Private Pilot’s Certificate, and received his Commercial Pilot’s Certificate in 1988; in 2002 he earned his Lighter-Than-Air Free Balloon Gas Pilot’s Certificate. His most memorable flight was flying the special shape soccer ball balloon over the Continental Divide with pilot Sean Askren, at an altitude of 18,300 feet in -30º degrees in Breckenridge, Colorado. In 1996 Scott started SkyCab Balloon
Promotions, and it is a full service hot air balloon company specializing in corporate balloon programs and hot air balloon event management. SkyCab currently operates 16 hot air balloons at events around the country and several international destinations. The term “Balloonmeister” originated in Europe and means Master Balloonist. The Balloonmeister must organize and oversee all activities involving the balloons. He is responsible for coordinating the balloon pilots and making sure all goes as planned. He schedules the races, checks the weather reports, conducts the pilot meetings and chooses the type of scoring races. In addition, throughout the weekend, Scott will be busy doing “behind the scenes” work to make sure everyone has an enjoyable Balloon Fest weekend in Centralia.

iberty Road Band is a cover and dance band that was formed in 2011. It is managed by Jim Barnes of Sandoval. Band members are as follows. Jim Barnes, electrical guitarist and occasional singer, has 40 plus years in the music field. Julie Barnes, contributing vocals and percussion, is the band's
girl singer and entertainer. She has over 20 years of experience in music. Neal Purnell is the bass guitarist. Bryant Ross is the lead guitarist and vocalist. Ross Herdes from Clay City plays drums. One of Southern Illinois' favorite and busiest country dance bands, their shows include a variety of dif-
ferent musical styles. They do some blues, country, jazz, old time rock 'n' roll, and even a few big band tunes. The band does everything from Johnny Cash to Loretta Lynn. As a whole they are substantial, family-oriented, fun-loving people. Come out and see them! They know how to put on a show and will have
you laughing and enjoying life. You can either get up and dance or just sit and listen. Liberty Road will be playing their special
brand of country dance music at Centralia Balloon Fest from 1:30 to 3: 00 p.m. on Sunday, August 19 under the family picnic tent.

August 17•18•19 Balloon Fest 2018 will award $100 Schnucks gift cards to five lucky landowners whose names are drawn at random at the conclusion of the Balloon Fest. Only landowners whose property is used for random landings by balloonists participating in Balloon Fest will be eligible. If you wish balloonists to land on your property, remember that a white sheet on your property is a universal welcome sign for balloonists. • Balloons usually fly in the early mornings and late afternoons, and seldom exceed a 10 – 12 mile radius of lift-off sites. • Balloon flight patterns are controlled by wind directions. • Pilots look for open land or roads for landing sites, avoiding crop and livestock areas. • Spectators are urged to respect the rights of landowners when following balloons in flight and landing areas, and to avoid tying up traffic. We appreciate the enthusiasm area rural landowners have shown in the past and want to thank them again for their support. With continued support we can make Balloon Fest 2018 problem free, fun-filled, and entertaining for the entire family.

Also, now available at the Chamber of Commerce office are the official Balloon Fest T-Shirts, souvenir coffee mugs, souvenir lapel pins, and beautiful glass Balloon ornaments.

he Haneys are not just another Southern Illinois Southern Gospel singing group. The Haneys work extremely hard to be a blessing to those to which they minister, and always consider each opportunity a blessing for them to worship and fellowship as well. The Haneys are made up of Bob Haney, Lara Haney Morris, both of Salem, and Berdella McGrew from Flora. The trio ministers through southern gospel music, including old classics, some newer arrangements, original material, and often some of the hymns of the church. They have adapted material that they do to insure a tightly

alt Creek String Band is an Effingham-based group that really enjoys bluegrass music and the great people they meet at festivals, jam sessions, and other events drawing folks that appreciate acoustic music. You'll hear a mixture of presentations ranging from some of your favorite early traditional groups to gospel to some more recent songs, all played in the traditional style, acoustically. All band members present lead vocal and harmony selections. Salt Creek String Band has been adding authentic music of the Civil War era. Many of these songs relate tales of victory, defeat, love, and life
in general for the average person in those times. In addition, several early 20th century ragtime melodies are included in the band's total repertoire. The group features threetime Illinois State Banjo Champion Gratton Toliver. He is also a two-time Missouri State Banjo Champion. Gratton, a native of Olney, IL, has been playing the banjo for over 40 years and has been a member of three previous bands. He has performed at various festivals throughout Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky, The other members of the band are Marylynne Toliver, playing the 'dog house' bass;
Chris Griffy of Salem, IL, the guitarist for the group; and the newest member, Andy King of Flora, IL, on the fiddle. Mar ylynne has been playing bluegrass for more than 30 years and was a member of previous bands for about twelve years. Chris has been playing guitar and mandolin for over 25 years and has also been a member of previous bands. Andy is featured on the fiddle and is an accomplished musician on several other instruments as well. All of the band members are interested in the promotion and preservation of bluegrass and authentic era music. They are pleased to be able to share their music with you.

Initiated from the caring community spirit of Balloonist Wes Rinker, and named after his Baseball Balloon, “High Fly”, The High Fly Cup is an annual award presented at Balloon Fest. It recognizes those balloonists, who from their unselfish deeds and caring actions, are truly HIGH FLY AMBASSADORS of ballooning and ambassadors of life. From the smiles they put on children’s faces to the memories that they leave behind, they make a difference.
