The Blue Ball Hotel, which was built in 1766 by Irishman John Wallace, showcased a symbol of a blue ball outside of the building, rather than a sign with a name. The town, formerly known as Earl Town, revolved around the inn for nearly a century. Many locals soon began to call the town Blue Ball. In 1833, the town officially changed its name to Blue Ball.

This week, we feature a series of folk beliefs which we have reason to believe were collected and recorded by Dr. Alfred Shoemaker in the middle of this century. Internal evidence seems to indicate that these beliefs were recorded in the Lehigh, Berks and Montgomery County area. The vocabulary and grammar is that of “classic” Pennsylvania German and shows few signs of the deterioration in the dialect we hear these days.
We have retained the numbers given them by Dr. Shoemaker.
These old beliefs are worthy of preservation and publication, for they reflect aspects of the folk mind which are less common these days. We would be most pleased if our readers would let us know which of these beliefs are familiar to them. Do any of them remind you of beliefs which are not listed?

Next week we celebrate der Grundsau Daag (or der Dashsdaag) with a poem, DER SCHLOOF, by Anna F. Faust.

The Path to Victory
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Proverbs 21:31
“The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord.”
The last half of our study verse is just as important, or at times, more important. It starts with the word but. But in scripture, it is a pivotal word. It is truly the fulcrum of every lever, the hinge upon which all doors swing. But it is where God steps in and fills the void no one else can fill. He does what He alone can do. Romans 6:23 is the most exciting “but God instance.” “The wages of sin is death BUT the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Joseph knew God’s deliverance/victory. He went
from the prison to the palace, becoming second in command under Pharaoh. His brothers sold him into slavery. Joseph spent at least two plus years in prison. God gave Joseph the interpretation of Pharaohs’ dream while in prison and that changed everything. The dream revealed seven years of drought that was in Egypt’s future. Since Joseph was able to interpret the dream, Pharaoh put him in charge of all the grain. He stored up enough grain to go through the drought and feed the kingdom as well as his entire family. Joseph submitted to God’s sovereignty in his life when he declared, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20). This verse “victory belongs to the Lord” demands that we depend utterly and completely on God for the victory in all battles. There are so many instances in

scripture that illustrate this. Remember when Joshua was battling the Amalekites? Every time Moses held up his staff, Joshua began to win. When Moses let down his staff, Joshua began to lose. When Moses couldn’t hold his arms and staff up any longer, as the battle wore on, Aaron and Hur had to hold up his arms until the battle was won. Then there was David and Goliath. Goliath was a warrior from
his youth, and David was but a youth. The Philistine giant had a spear, a sword, javelin and a shield. David had a sling and five smooth stones. David had something or someone the Philistine pagan didn’t have “But God.” David’s courage was based in God’s power and deliverance, not his own strength. David declared: “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the

name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you defied.” This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand.”
David also goes on to say, “That all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into my hands.” If we think we can live the Christian life on our own strength, we will be defeated every time. It is a supernatural life that can only be lived by supernatural means.
Gideon is another illustration of God’s power to bring victory. It is also a text that demonstrates our responsibility is to acknowledge He alone delivers The Midianites and others would continually raid Israel after their crops were grown and ready for harvest. God had actually given Israel over to this because of Israel’s disobedience in not driving out all of the inhabitants of the land. Israel
cried out to the Lord and he delivered them from these people. It’s interesting that God said to Gideon, you have too many people to fight the Midianites. He went on to say, if I let you win over them with this many troops, you will think you delivered yourselves by your own power. So, God pared down Gideon’s army of 32,300 to 300 warriors. Through a process of elimination, God cut 22,000 cowards, 10,000 incompetent and that left 300 committed who won over insurmountable odds. So, let’s wrap up what our verse says: prepare for the days (and they are many) of battle by putting on the whole armor of God. Vance Havner used to say, “until we do the simple things we can do, God will not do the supernatural things He alone can do.” Put the whole armor on (prepare the horse). Always depend on God for the victory; never depend on self.

100 Years Ago: Historical Events From March 1925
The month of March has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in March 1925.
• A military committee in France concludes that Germany committed gross violations of the Treaty of Versailles on March 1. The committee, led by Marshal Ferdinand Foch, accuses Germany of violating provisions related to the disarmament of its military.
• Huff Daland Dusters Inc., is founded in Macon, Georgia, on March 2. The company, which began as a drop dusting firm formed to combat a boll weevil infestation of cotton crops, would be sold near the end of 1928, at which time it is renamed Delta Air Service.
• The United States Congress authorizes the Mount Rushmore Memorial Commission on March 3. The initial design for Mount Rushmore initially featured
each president depicted from head to waist. But funding for the sculpture dried up in 1941, so only President George Washington’s sculpture features any details below chin level.
• The second inauguration of United States President Calvin Coolidge takes place on March 4. It is the first inauguration to be nationally broadcast on radio.
• Alan Rowe opens the chamber of the tomb of Hetepheres I on March 8 in Egypt. Rowe, who was serving as deputy director of the HarvardBoston Expedition, is the first person in 4,500 years to open the chamber.
• The state of Bavaria in Germany bans Adolf Hitler from speaking in public for two years on March 9. The ban limits Hitler to speaking only in private, closed meetings.
• Greek football club Olympiacos F.C. is founded in Piraeus on March 10. Olympiacos is now the most successful club in Greek football history, with 47 league titles to its credit.
• Cuba and the United States sign the HayQuesada Treaty on March 13. The treaty recognizes that the Isla de Pinos, now known as
the Isla de la Juventud, is the territory of Cuba.
• Walter Camp passes away in New York City on March 14 at the age of 65. Camp, a college football coach considered the “Father of American Football,” created the sport’s system of downs and the line of scrimmage.
• An estimated 5,000 people are killed when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes the Chinese province of Yunnan on March 16.
• Edvard Benes of Czechoslovakia proposes a “United States of Europe” on March 17. The proposal is an attempt to secure peace in Europe and includes a western bloc featuring nations including England and France, and an eastern bloc made up of countries including Poland and Austria.
• The Breakers, a luxury hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, burns down on March 18. The cause of the fire is later traced to the wife of Chicago mayor William Hale Thompson, who left an electric curling iron plugged in.
• On March 19, Martha Wise confesses to poisoning 17 members of her family. Wise was connected to the

* On March 13, 1865, the Confederacy reluctantly approved the use of Black troops, its last source of fresh manpower, as the main Rebel army faced long odds against much larger Union counterparts. The measure
did not help to save the Confederacy, since the several thousand Black men who were enlisted could not balance out the nearly 200,000 Black soldiers fighting for the Union.

* “Plastic grocery bags are handy for so many uses, but keeping them organized was always a pain, until I discovered that I could use an empty tissue box to store them. I just ball up each bag individually (so there is no air trapped) and stuff it in the tissue box. You can do the same thing for larger amounts of bags by using an empty 12pack box from soda. I store one of these in my shop.” Fred C. from Pennsylvania
* “Tired of squirrels on your bird feeders? String a line of 2liter soda bottles (as many as you like) together, and hang them between two trees, with the feeder in the middle. Works like a charm.” C.V. in Maine
* If your kids (or you) like cereal, be sure to save the heavy plastic liners that hold the cereal inside the box. They are really handy when freezing meat patties in stacks. You can use them to separate layers of cookies, too.
* “I just finished packing up my house to move, and this little tip was a dandy: Use a toothpick to keep the open end of your tape from disappearing. When you cut the tape, slip a toothpick at the end that’s still on the roll. You will never have to go fishing for it again.” L.K. in New Mexico

* If your water takes a minute to warm up, keep a pitcher by the sink. Let the water flow into the pitcher until it gets warm. Then, use that water (that otherwise would have been wasted) on your houseplants and in your garden.

Cocalico High School
Briella Wilson Junior
This year, Briella Wilson, a Cocalico High School junior, has worked hard to stay involved inside and outside of school by challenging herself with classes such as Applied Calc, AP Biology, Physics, AP European History, AP Civics and Government, and AP Literature.

Written by: Madison Zepp

In addition to these timeconsuming classes, Briella uses her last class to volunteer at the Wellspan Hospital in Ephrata. Aside from school, she is involved in a multitude of extracurricular activities, including NHS, TRI-M Music Honor Society, Sending Sunshine, and Leo Club. She is also involved in different sports, including softball and soccer. Briella spends her free time as a waitress at Issac’s.
In her future, Briella aspires to have a career in neonatology. In order to pursue this, she will attend a college, her top choices being Duke University and University of Cincinnati. Briella loves to travel, and in the future, she hopes to travel to Switzerland to see the Swiss Alps. She also is visiting Hawaii this summer, completing her goal to visit all 50 states. In addition to almost visiting all 50 states, she has also visited 32 national parks. Briella also likes to ski for fun.
A big role model for her has been her parents, Chris and Stacy Wilson. She views them as extremely dedicated and hardworking due to their successful businesses. A quote that inspires Briella is, “The harder you try, the better the impression you set on the people around you” by Tom Holland. Briella is an extremely motivated and dedicated student, and we wish her the best in her future.

He is quite popular among the Juniors and Sophomores due to his involvement in sports. He has been playing basketball for multiple years and has become a constant face on the court. Recently, he also began playing on the school volleyball team. Joni enjoys and excels in physics with Mr. Swift, developing a working Rube Goldberg machine with his classmate Lilly. He is exploring Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology for a degree in metal fabrication or HVAC.
Joni was recently hired at the newest Chick-fil-A location in Lebanon and works as much as he can to save for college. He has encountered much success in his work there on top of his academic advancements at LCS.

One thing Joni loves about Lititz Christian School is the teachers. He looks up to Mr. Swift particularly due to his intelligence and his wealth of wise advice. He attends Manheim Brethren in Christ Church and is looking to join its youth group as well.
Coming to the U.S. from Puerto Rico, Joni has been a welcomed addition to the
family.
