Historical Society Programs

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) announces that their next educational program, “Mindful Pretzel Consumption” will be held Wednesday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 East Main Street, Ephrata.

Jill Marie Thomas, greatgreat-granddaughter of Julius Sturgis, and daughter of Tom Sturgis, will speak.

Akron Lions Support Organizations On Donation Night

Eighteen organizations were invited to the club meeting of the Akron Lions Club recently. This was a special meeting to give out donations from proceeds from the Ephrata Fair food stand. Many of these organizations also

help the Akron Lions serve their famous toasted cheeseburger sandwiches during the fair. The fair is a lot of work, but it pays off when the Akron Lions can share with other organizations, which also serve their fellow man.

Checks were distributed in the amount of $31,900.

Evelyn J. Bosworth, 95, United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz, formerly of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, February 16.

She was the wife of the late Edwin M. Bosworth.

She is survived by a son, Jamie L. Bosworth, husband of Dorothy J., Senoia, Georgia; a daughter, Ann M., wife of Gary L. Horning, Lancaster; five grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren.

Allen L. Morehead, 86, husband of Barbara Ruth (Beisswenger) Morehead, Garden Spot Village, New Holland, passed away on Tuesday, February 21.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: David L. Morehead, husband of Marcy, Lancaster; Christopher F. Morehead, husband of Jerusha, Enterprise, Alabama; and Michael A. Morehead, husband of Deborah, Pleasant Hill, California; six grandchildren; and five great­

grandchildren.

Roderick Harry Bergstrom, 94, husband of Lorraine, Luthercare, Lititz, passed away on Thursday, February 23.

“Rosanna Of The Amish’ is the life story of a baby, Rosanna McGonegal, born Irish Catholic, orphaned at the age of five days, raised by a devout Amish woman, and so became a devout Amish woman herself. The book portrayed Rosanna’s life as it developed, showing in story from many of the customs of the Amish people…” Thus begins Joseph W. Yoder’s “Preface” to “Rosanna’s Boys,” a sequel to “Rosanna Of The Amish.” “Rosanna’s Boys” was published in Huntingdon by the Yoder Publishing Company. “Rosanna’s Boys” was “Dedicated To My Beloved Parents, Christian Z. Yoder and Rosanna McGonegal Yoder.”

In the middle of last July, on a hot Sunday afternoon on the Alexander Schaeffer Farm in Schaefferstown, our friend Dave Hornberger “uff der Keenich Schtrooss in Effredaa” handed us a large brown envelope which contained the following letter:

Lions Student Of The Month

The West Earl Lions, along with the Brownstown Elementary School, have announced the March Student of the Month. The honor goes to first grader Adalyn Ranck, daughter of Tyler and Amanda Ranck, and student of Mrs. Koehnke.

Mrs. Koehnke says that Adalyn comes to school with a sweet smile and a great attitude, ready to learn. She is respectful to her teacher and her friends as they learn. When things get tough, she digs in and perseveres, staying positive and focused. Adalyn has a gentle spirit, helpful to everyone. Her friends love her because she is patient and kind, sympathetic and considerate of others feelings. Adalyn is honest with friends and teachers. She enjoys telling her teacher about the book she is reading, fun times with her family and showing

pictures that she has drawn. Mrs. Koehnke had no doubt that Adalyn would be March Student of the Month.

The West Earl Lions congratulate Adalyn and wish her much success and happiness as she continues her school years. The West Earl Lions recently held a Food Drive at Oregon Dairy and wish to thank the store, all who participated and those who contributed to the Club’s success.

“Rosanna’s Final Illness And Her Funeral”

Rosanna’s husband, Christ Yoder, was a preacher; they had four sons and lived on a big farm. Rosanna was ill with consumption for about a year. The final two weeks of her life she was in bed. Her sons spent the nights with her and a maid the days. Christ and the sons were with her when she died on a Saturday afternoon. Friends and neighbors helped to prepare for the funeral. Levi Hartzler drove the body to the graveyard in his spring wagon. The undertaker built the coffin. The funeral was held on a Tuesday. The carriages came from all directions. When they drove to the cemetery, the funeral procession was a mile long. The funeral sermon was delivered in the downstairs bedroom (which had been emptied of its furnishings); the mourners were seated in every room of the house.

Lititz Senior Center Lists Activities

The Lancaster County Office of Aging, Lititz Senior Center, located at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street, Lititz, is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with lunch served at noon. There is no cost to attend.

The Center serves independent Lancaster County seniors ages 60 and up from Ephrata, Rothsville, Akron, Neffsville and Lititz areas. Ephrata is also served by van service. Reservations for

lunch and transportation must be made by 10:00 a.m., one day in advance, by calling the Center at 717626­2800.

The deacon read from the Scriptures. Nancy John Yoder preached. He recalled how gentle Rosanna had been and great was her faith. She had been a good wife to Christ and a good mother to her sons. He spoke of the empty chair and the voice no longer to be heard. The preacher read aloud the hymn, “Good night, my dear children.”

The remains were viewed in the kitchen. There were

several hundred people attending the funeral. Levi Hartzler lead the funeral procession with his spring wagon. When they arrived at the graveyard, the pallbearers carried the coffin to the grave. The preacher read a hymn aloud. Then there was silent prayer. The pallbearers closed the grave and the preacher pronounced the blessing. The funeral was at an end.

The next day Christ was alone with Rosanna’s flower garden. He watered the flowers and took care of them. He looked at the lovely flowers and the many lovely colors. They encouraged him. The flowers were so beautiful and sweet; they reminded him of Rosanna. The pansies smiled up at him so lovingly, just as Rosanna had.

We were most pleased to be reminded by Dave Hornberger of Joseph W. Yoder’s classic account of the Amish, “Rosanna Of The Amish.” The most recent copy of this book in our possession we purchased in Berlin, Ohio. This edition bears a 1973 copyright by Herald Press.

It was printed as a Choice Book, published by Mennonite Broadcasts, Inc., Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The author, Joseph W. Yoder was born in 1872 at Belleville. He attended Northwestern University and received his A.B. degree from Juniata College in 1904. His teaching career began in 1895 in Milroy, where he was the principal of the high school for two years. Later he taught at the Elkhart Institute (later Goshen College) in Indiana.

From 1906-1919, he taught music and logic at Lock Haven State Teachers College.

In 1948, Mr. Yoder received a citation from the Pennsylvania German Society for his books on Amish life. In addition to “Rosanna Of The Amish,” his works include “Amische Lieder,” “Rosanna’s Boys,” and “Amish Traditions.” Yoder was born into an Old Order Amish family, thus was acquainted with Amish customs at first hand.

East Cocalico Lions Club Student Of The Month

Each month, the East Cocalico Lions Club honors a Cocalico High School student for their achievements and for being one of the High School’s and the community’s finest. Each student is presented with a certificate and a monetary gift along with an inspiration book and a flash drive from the Adamstown Public Library.

Recently, at a club meeting that he and his parents attended, Tyler Angstadt was honored as a Club’s Student of the Month by the members of the East Cocalico Lions Club. At Cocalico, Tyler participates in football, where he was a Captain, and also plays Baseball. He was honored as a Team MVP, 1st Team AllLeague Linebacker and AllState Linebacker. He is also a 4.0 Honor Roll Student.

Tyler believes in the Lions Clubs motto of “We Serve” by volunteering with youth baseball and football leagues. He plans to attend college to study finance.

Keegan Simmons, of Akron, is one of 13 Lebanon Valley College students who participated in a winter break Navajo Nation Service-

Learning Trip. The group spent the week immersed in life on a Navajo reservation as they completed numerous projects on two different farms in Tuba City, Arizona.

Simmons, a graduate of Ephrata Senior High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science in business administration from The Valley.

The group opened a trench that would allow water to flow down the mountain from a natural spring to local homes. They also experienced the beauty and significance of Mother Earth as they hiked many canyons and mesas. Additionally, they learned aspects of Navajo language, dance, food and more.

“Don’t take it lightly”

Scripture: Romans 2:4“Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and restraint and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?”

Last week we studied God’s kindness in regard

to the unbeliever and salvation. God’s goodness, patience and longsuffering is also evident in the believer’s sanctification God worked patiently and gently with us when we did not believe and He continues the same approach after we believe I am so glad God doesn’t quickly judge when we misbehave. I appreciate God’s longsuffering and patience with me when I fail, when I sin and when I just plain choose my own way. Even after salvation, we still have a lot of that wandering sheep in us. “We all like sheep have gone astray, each of us have turned to his own way. But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us

all to fall on Him.” (Isaiah 53:6). How often we can hear the bleating of sheep in the distance as Samuel did when he questioned Saul

about his disobedience. Our topic for this week is God’s patience and kindness in our sanctification. The Bible says it is God’s will

that we are sanctified. “For this is the will of God even your sanctification.”

(1st Thessalonians 4:3a). Some people are confused about God’s will, its simple (our sanctification). Let’s start with a definition.

Sanctification is the “setting apart” of someone or something. It is a setting apart from one sphere to another. The Bible says don’t be conformed to this world… that’s setting us apart from the world. The verse goes on to say… but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that setting us apart to something (a new and different mind). The term for sanctification was also used in the purchase of

land. The land was surveyed, the boundaries are located, the land is now set apart or separated from all other land. In salvation we are set apart from the old Adam to the new Adam (Christ). The Bible says that the whole world lies in the lap of the evil one (Satan). We are taken out of his lap…glad for that! We have a new father, a new eternal destiny, we are now spiritually alive when we were spiritually dead. “For He has delivered us from the kingdom of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.” (Colossians 1:13).

understand what God has already accomplished for the believer. It is God’s will that we live up to who we really are in Christ. This dimension of sanctification, which is often misunderstood, is positional truth vs. conditional (our daily condition or behavior) or stated another way, positional truth vs. practical living. Often our daily living doesn’t match the biblical standard for the believer. There is a gap between what we are and how we conduct ourselves. This gap is progressive sanctification. It takes time to grow into what we are. We have seen the bumper sticker that reads, “Be patient, God isn’t finished with me yet.” So let’s take a quick look at just some of what God does for a person once they believe on Christ for salvation. I encourage you to look each of these verses up.

We are justified (declared righteous) (Rom. 3:23­28), we become children of God (1 John 3:1-2), we are baptized or placed into the body of Christ the church (1 Corinthians 12:13), we are forgiven (Ephesians 1:7), we are sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30), we are Indwelt by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:1920), we have an eternal relationship with God (Ephesians 2:13), the power of the sin nature is broken (Romans 6:10­14), we

cannot be condemned ever (Romans 8:1­3, we have eternal life now (1 John 5:12-13). There are many more benefits that occur at salvation. These truths have to do with your position in Christ. In other words, these transactions are once for all… they take place at salvation and are irrevocable, they cannot be changed and do not depend on your everyday living or your condition. All of these benefits are a down payment, if you will, and He, Christ will make good on payment in full. He began this work in every believer and He will complete it. God is very patient and longsuffering with us. Let’s not take it lightly.

Theatre will present their spring musical, “Fame Jr.” on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Middle School auditorium. There is an admission cost per person and tickets are available at the door.

“Fame Jr.” is set during the last four years of the High School for the Performing Arts in New York City in the early 1980s. Watch as the Acting, Music and Dance

Mary Jane “Janie” (Weinhold) Buchter

Mary Jane ‘Janie’ (Weinhold) Buchter, 75, of Stevens, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2023. Born in Lauschtown, PA, she was a daughter of the late Clarence J. Sr. and Bertha (Kessler) Weinhold and the loving wife of 58 years to David A. Buchter.

She was a graduate of Garden Spot High School, class of 1965. Janie worked at the Cinderella Knitting Mills for 25 years. She was a faithful member of Wiest United Methodist Church in Scheoneck for over 50 years. She enjoyed volunteering for bingo at the Denver Fair and Schoeneck Fire Co. Janie’s happy place was always the beach, especially Tuckahoe Acres in Dagsboro, Delaware. She spent her beach time golf-carting in the sun to soak in the views and wearing her favorite flip flops. Janie was known to always have a smile

on her face. Family was everything to Janie, including making time to stay in touch with her sisters and extended family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandsons and great granddaughters.

Janie is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Corwin (Brian) of Reinholds; two grandsons, Ryan Corwin of Reinholds and Nick Corwin

(Kendel) of Denver; three great granddaughters, Elodie, Kennedy, and Everleigh; and six sisters, Alta M. Hoshour, Hazel V. Sweigart, Shirley L., wife of Ernest R. Dunkelberger Sr., Bertha G. Adair, Agnes A., wife of Steve Thomas, & Helen V., wife of Harold L. Shaak. Janie was predeceased by one infant granddaughter, Nicole, and three brothers, Clarence ‘C.J.’ ‘Shorty’ Weinhold Jr., husband of Marian E. Weinhold, Evan P. Weinhold, and David K. Weinhold.

Melissa Renee (Gress) Swift

Melissa Renee (Gress) Swift, 53, of Reamstown, peacefully went home to the Lord on Friday, March 10, 2023, in the arms of her loving husband of 31 years.

Missy was the wife of Keith Swift to whom she shared 35 years of love and partnership with, 31 of those years spent in marriage. She was the proud mother of Felicia (Swift) Foster of Wernersville, and mother-in-law to Nathan Foster. Born in Ephrata, she was the daughter of Edgar Gress and Beatrice (Sheaffer) Gress, and sister to Brian Gress. Her family was her pride and joy; her life mission was spent making memories with her family.

She was a graduate of Cocalico High School, class of 1987. Missy worked for Kalas Manufacturing for many years before going back to school to pursue her passion of working with animals where she became an animal technician. For the past 11 years she has worked for Covance Research Products, specializing in working with large animals, her favorite being the horses.

Missy will be remembered for her contagious personality that would light up a room.

Her love of animals was shared with all 4-legged creatures, especially dogs and horses. Her personality and sense of humor made her who she will be remembered as. Even through her 11-month battle with Intimal Sarcoma, her sense of humor and strong-willed personality was not dimmed. Up until her last moments she never lost her sense of humor or her determination to take in as much time as she was given here surrounded by her family.

Missy is survived by her husband Keith Swift of Reamstown; her daughter, Felicia (Swift) Foster, wife of Nathan Foster of Wernersville; her mother and

father, Beatrice (Sheaffer) and Edgar Gress of Reinholds; brother Brian Gress of Reinholds; her two dogs, Remmy and Ralph; and many friends that she considered family. Missy was predeceased by her sister Gale Gress, her aunt Edith Gress, her paternal grandparents Earl and Elsie “Gremmy” Gress, and her maternal grandparents Chester and Alice Sheaffer.

A viewing will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023, from 6 to 8 pm and on Saturday, March 18, 2023, from 10 to 11 am. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am. Music At Adamstown Library

On Thursday, March 23, Adamstown Area Library will host “Folklore and Coal Mining Songs of the Northeast” with performer Jay Smar. This informative musical and historical program features original and documented songs of coal miners in northeast Pennsylvania during the early 1900s. Jay Smar’s grandfather mined coal in Schuylkill and Carbon County, PA for over 50 years. These songs highlight the everyday struggles and life of the European coal miner in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Jay performs traditional songs sung by miners, recorded by folklorist George Korson, as well as songs about more contemporary issues such as “The Fires of Centralia,” which documents the 50-year-old coal fire that burns to this day. Vocals are accompanied by guitar, claw-hammer banjo, and fiddle.

To emulate the mining musicians of the region, Jay sings, fiddles, and flat-foot clog-dances simultaneously to highlight the end of the program. A photo of this being performed in a local coal mine will be on display. Northeast PA coal books, chronicles, pay scales, photos and related coal mining articles are also displayed at each performance.

The goal for Fairview Cemetery and Fairview Cemetery Annex is to raise enough funds to place 373 sponsored veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of all the local heroes laid to rest there, to ensure that the individuals who served to protect the freedoms of our country never be forgotten and to bring the community together in patriotic commemoration.

Denver Elementary Positive IMPACT Program

Denver Elementary’s Positive IMPACT is an after-school activity-based character-building program for boys in grades third through fifth. The program focuses on teaching boys skills to help them make a positive impact on their communities. The pillars of the program are Integrity, Motivation, Passion, Academics, Community and Tolerance. These skills are taught through the playing of various sports and other activity-based games. The program meets once a week from October through April. Currently there are 23 boys engaged in the programming! Shown are young men working hard and having fun. CEF Receives Donation

Cocalico Education Foundation (CEF) recently received $20,000 from Clark Associates Charitable Foundation and Michael Thornton, Executive Director. Rachel Brandt, Marketing Coordinator of The Restaurant Store, and a few fellow employees, met with Malory Kreider, CEF Vice President after the generous donation had been given. The charitable contribution, part of the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program, will be used to help fund initiatives promoting cultural experiences, the arts and

literacy activities.

The CEF manages the donations and awards money to deserving programs that are not funded by the district and the local tax base. Thus, thanks to Clark Associates Charitable Foundation and other local businesses, additional opportunities that encourage more productive, motivated students are possible. Just a few of the programs receiving grant money this year include Computers for Cocalico, German-American Partnership Program Exchange, Multi-Colored Screen Printing Press, Jump2Math and Dashing into STEM. Annie Zimmerman 7th Grade

Sweet-sounding music comes from Annie Zimmerman as she strums on her ukulele and sings. Music is a big part of Annie’s household, where she lives with her parents, Jesse and Bethany Zimmerman, and her five siblings. Outside of music, Annie enjoys volleyball, reading, and spending time with her two dogs and chickens. She loves music and is eager to share God’s love to all around her.

Anyone who has ever met Annie would say she is a friendly person with a heart for God. However no one realizes how extreme her love for Christ is until they have heard her sing. She says, “Whenever someone is playing any other type of music, I get up and turn it to worship music.” That simple action shows her love for Christ. Annie is in seventh grade at HMS and is super excited to be a part of the worship team this year. She is hopeful of the possibility of using the skill of playing an instrument. Just recently Annie decided to start playing the ukulele, and has been doing so for a little over a year. She also enjoys learning more about the Bible and is excited to do Bible quizzing at her church, Good Shepherd Community Church. Her favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11, which says, “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper but not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Annie wants to follow God for the rest of her life and cannot wait to see what He has in store for her.

Ethan Sauder

Ethan Sauder really enjoys the social aspect in life that he gets to socialize with others at school. One of his extra curricular activities was soccer which their season actually went really well for the soccer team and they ended their season with the solid rock tournament that they went undefeated in. They actually went 10-0 in their season which is a great accomplishment and won’t be forgotten about for a long time. One thing he is going to do when he graduates high school is work and make money. He isn’t really planning on going to college but you never know what is going to happen in life. He also really enjoys playing sports and hanging out with friends in his spare time. He is also really into photography and making items out of leather. One thing he would change about the world is the gas prices which were extremely high and are getting better now. Someone he admires is his two grandpas and how they give out great advice for him to take with him in life. One of his accomplishments in life so far is actually hiking up a mountain in Alaska last summer which was a four hour round trip.
