This week we again return to the writings of ONKEL YARICK, the late W. Edwin Charles. DIE POLLY UN DER SOLLY UNES FRIEHYAAHR first appeared in the February 12, 1931 issue of the Middleburg Post, a weekly newspaper which was owned and edited by Mr. Charles. You will see by the conversation between Polly and Solly that Polly still has “der Dachs,” the ground hog, in mind. Solly does not want to be disturbed by the thought of the end of winter. Sez he: “Ich bleib am Offe leie.” Polly insists that spring is on the way. Solly does not want to hear of it, for it is clear he’s not yet ready for the spring chores.
W. Edwin Charles’ obituary informs us that “At two o’clock p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 1933, W. Edwin Charles, one of Snyder County’s most prominent and noted men departed from this life about a half hour after leaving his desk in the printing office…His Pennsylvania Dutch letters under the pen name Onkel Yarick will be no more and with the death of his good friend, Colonel T.H. Harter, author of Boonastiel, Pennsylvania Germans lose two popular authors. Just last Friday, Mr. Charles attended the funeral of Mr. Harter at Bellefonte.” The entire obituary was printed in the Middleburg Post on June 8, 1933.
This week we again salute Mr. Eddie Charles, the son of Onkel Yarick, for making these historic Onkel Yarick columns available to us. Eddie Charles lives on West Market Street in Middleburg.

Salem Church Takes Tour Of Germany
Nineteen members and associates of Salem Lutheran Church of Ephrata recently made a pilgrimage to Germany to visit sites associated with the life and work of the religious reformer, Martin Luther. The trip was organized and led by Rev. Jeffrey Goodman of Salem Lutheran Church. The group is pictured in front of All Saints Church in Wittenberg by the door where Martin Luther posted his 95 theses in 1517, which sparked the Protestant Reformation.

Dear Downsizing Duo, I’m not ready to move into a senior care facility—but I am ready to be done with the burden of this large home and yard. What are my options?
—Stuck in Square Footage
Dear Stuck in Square Footage, You’re not alone! There’s a whole generation of folks just like you who are fully independent, and over it when it comes to mowing lawns and climbing ladders to clean out gutters.
There are countless housing options that offer comfort, community, and convenience without that “senior care” vibe. Think charming condos with zero yardwork, stylish one-floor townhomes or even “55 and better” communities that feel more like vacation than obligation. Right-sizing means giving yourself the gift of a simpler space so you can say “yes” to more of what matters—travel, family, hobbies, or just sitting on a porch that someone else has to power wash. This next chapter? It’s got a smaller footprint and a lot more joy.

Feeling a little sheepish lately?
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Isaiah 53:6“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
Sheep in scripture represent God’s people. We, like sheep, are often prone to wander and need a shepherd. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who leads, protects and lays down his life for us. In the Bible, sheep represent true believers. They know the shepherd and the shepherd knows them. A goat is a nonbeliever and will be separated from the sheep eventually.
Sheep are gentle animals and very perceptive. Sheep have a 270 to a 320 degree
line of vision. They can recognize up to 50 different faces of other sheep and can maintain that image in their memory for two years.
Sheep are often portrayed as vulnerable and innocent; it’s a reflection of the human condition and our need for divine guidance and protection.
One of the first issues we notice is that, like sheep, we all have gone astray The Hebrew word for astray means “to wander.” Humans, like sheep, do tend to wander away from the revealed will of God and pursue personal desires and self-interest, which often is in opposition to God’s plan. God’s nation Israel turned to their own way in regard to the Sabbath. I was personally challenged when I read Isaiah 58:13“If, because of the Sabbath, you restrain your foot from doing your pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and shall honor him, not
doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words.” After church, I think most believers say, well that’s done now, let’s get on with the rest of the day. I knew a pastor who really loved sports. On Sunday he wouldn’t even read the paper, watch TV or do anything that would distract him from meditating on and or enjoying his Savior on the Lord’s Day. I know we aren’t Israel, and the Sabbath has been replaced by the Lord’s Day, but it just shows how far we can wander in our own pleasure and ways without recognizing it. Maybe our life would be different if we really made the Lord’s Day, the Lord’s Day.

we want and that it doesn’t affect others. The Bible says, “No man lives unto himself.” So if we seek our own way, it leaves no room to positively influence others. Our own way can seem pleasant and worthwhile, but Proverbs 21:2 says, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord ponders the hearts.” “There is a way that seems right in his own eyes but the ends thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12). What a contrast. It seems a little scary that our perception can be so skewed and yet we don’t even know it. There is always a great peril in a self-directed life, frankly, nothing is more misdirected than the self-directed life. “Lean NOT unto your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5b).
Samson was another example of what happens when we go astray and choose our own way! He was a Judge that delivered
Israel from the dreaded Philistines for a period of about twenty years. How could the strongest man that ever lived come to the end of his life; eyes gouged out, bound in chains and forced to grind grain in a Philistine mill as a slave? It gets worse. The Philistines would bring him out for sport into an arena where they mocked and humiliated him for entertainment in their drunken revelries. It all goes back to that fateful day when he chose his own way by seeking a wife from the Philistines. Judges 14:3 reads, “But his father and mother said to him, ‘Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?’ But Samson said to his father, ‘Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes.’” In doing this, he set the stage for yet another Philistine woman, named Delilah, who would
later betray his trust and ultimately lead to his defeat and death.
We will pick up our theme next week.

West Earl Police Community Outreach
West Earl Police Chief Eric Higgins is a firm believer in connecting to the community through outreach events, that he plans usually once a month. “By building relationships, it helps us do our job better,” he said.
Chief Higgins shared an example about why community outreach is so important: Recently a resident called 911 and Officers Ryan Blessing and Jacob Waltz arrived at her door. Seeing them eased the situation, she said, because she knew them – she had previously met them at an outreach event. Later, this resident sent the police department a thank you note expressing her appreciation of the officers.
Some of the outreach events the police department has held include Coffee with a Cop, Cupcakes with a Cop, two blood drives, First Responder Meet and Greets, ice cream events and National Night Out (held the
first Tuesday in August). National Night Out requires the most planning time and this year, it should be bigger and better that ever before. Later this year, Higgins wants to plan a “Meet the Chief” event. Also, if anyone would like a tour of the station, Higgins asked that residents let him know.
Higgins stated that he always believed in community outreach, and during his college years (he holds a Masters in Administrative Sciences and a BA in Criminal Justice), he was impressed with the philosophical views of Sir Robert Peel, the Father of Modern Policing, who described the role of policing as “the police are the public and the public are the police.”
“We’re here for you,” Higgins emphasized, “call us if you need us.” He wants everyone to know that if any activity looks suspicious, to inform the police department right away. “Sometimes this information might help the department solve a puzzle going on,” he said.

60 YEARS Serving Community!Our OF
Community!
What started as one man’s dream of opening his own print shop has grown to become a company-wide commitment of service to the local area. Serving the community was John Hocking’s lifelong goal, and that involvement in the community continues to this day, with a hard-working group of employees now ensuring that those core values John believed in are still central to the company as a whole. Janie Hocking worked side-by-side with her husband,
proudly growing a family business to pass on to future generations.
2025
As a 1944 Milton Hershey School graduate, John W. Hocking always had the drive to succeed. After having worked as a linotype operator at various newspapers, he decided, at the age of 27, to open his own one-man print shop in 1953. A decade later, seeing the need for a free community newspaper, he started The Shopping News of Lancaster County to publish ads for local businesses, community happenings and events of interest. After months of hard work by John, his wife Janie, family members and friends, the very first issue of The Shopping News hit the streets on April 14, 1965. The paper began as a 1/2 tab, 24page booklet mailed bi-weekly to only 10,000 homes.
1972
Business thrived over the following years and the company soon outgrew the Hockings’ original building on Orange Street in Ephrata. In 1972, the plant on East Main Street was purchased. The building was originally the East End Planing Mill, but was renovated for use by The Shopping News.
1986
In February 1986, a fire completely destroyed the East Main Street building. About to turn 60 years old, founder John Hocking made the decision to rebuild the plant. The Shopping News missed only one week’s publication and delivery thanks to the dedication of the employees, friends and business associates. For the next eleven months, many of the production aspects of the paper were handled by Lebanon’s Kapp Advertising. Kapp’s founders, Rob and Erma Kapp, provided guidance pivotal to the founding of The Shopping News in 1965. The new East Main Street building was finished and occupied by June 1987.
Today, The Shopping News of Lancaster County is a full tab community newspaper employing over 60 people. The paper is delivered weekly to over 34,000 local homes and businesses in Northern Lancaster County, as well as parts of Lebanon and Berks Counties. The Shopping News has been recognized by and received awards from both national and regional free paper organizations for ad creativity and paperwide general excellence.
Janie Hocking passed away on November 21, 1993 and John Hocking passed away on January 19, 2014. The business is now owned and operated by their daughter, Julie Hocking. Granddaughter Jennifer Sherk has also joined the staff, representing the third generation to have a hand in the family business.
The management team of Harold Wenger and Pam Boyer, along with all of the other Shopping News staff, continue to work diligently to deliver a quality community newspaper to your home each week!

Stephy Sensenig 8th Grade
Hinkletown Mennonite
Sensenig
Rebeca Stephanie Sensenig, who is often referred to as Stephy, has traveled to very interesting places with a variety of cultures. She attends Hinkletown Mennonite School in 8th grade and goes to Weaverland Church in East Earl with her parents, Josh and Rebeca Sensenig. Stephy lives with her parents, her brother, David Sensenig, and her dog, Copper. Stephy loves traveling with her family and has seen many interesting sights across her travels.
Stephy has many very unique hobbies, but one very interesting thing would be her love to travel places. Stephy has been to several states in the USA, including Florida and New Hampshire. However, despite these places being very entertaining to travel to, the place that stands out the most is Ecuador. Ecuador has a very diverse and in-depth culture, and that is something that Stephy highly enjoys about Ecuador. In Ecuador there is plenty of delicious ethnic food, including empanadas, which are Stephy’s favorite food there. Her favorite place to visit in Ecuador are the mountains in El Cajas National Park, where there are scenic views all around. Stephy visits Ecuador about once every two years to see family and others, but also to enjoy her favorite travel destination.
There are so many things about traveling that make it easy to tell why Stephy loves it so much. Maybe sometime in the near future she might go on another trip!
Emma Cassel 11th Grade
Emma Cassel is the daughter of Jon and Keri Cassel and is finishing up her junior year this year. She says her favorite classes right now are Math and Microsoft Office because it’s logical. She is also in her school’s singing group called the Ministry Arts Team, or MAT, and she has also already completed two dual-enrollment courses through Messiah College. After school, Emma says that she really doesn’t have any specific plans but wants to be able to follow the plans that the Lord has for her.
Emma is the second oldest of four kids, and her older sister is out in Illinois teaching kindergarten. Her father is a pastor for White Oak Church, where they attend. Emma says that she looks up to her parents because of their wisdom that they have to give, and because of how they’re both ready to serve when they are called or needed. And because of their good-natured humor.
One thing that Emma would love to see in the world is that every child would be able to be placed in good, safe homes.
Written by: Marissa Oberholtzer
One of her dreams for a few years and something that she feels called to is to one day be able to live in a Spanish-speaking country.
Some things that she is looking forward to this year are for MAT tour, a backpacking trip in Colorado, a trip to Illinois, and cabin trips.
Some things that she enjoys are working in the kitchen, learning Spanish, and being with friends. Overall, Emma is
