CAP Squadrons Honor Veterans Of Vietnam War

Cadets from the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Jesse Jones Squadron 304 and the Nittany Composite Squadron 338 honored veterans of the Vietnam War for the 50th Anniversary of the draw down of the War at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg on July 22.

The Military Museum of Pennsylvania held a wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the anniversary. Honor Guard Cadets from the local CAP Lancaster Squadron 304 and the Color Guard Cadets from the Nittany Squadron 338 performed the wreath laying ceremony to honor those veterans who have lost their lives during the conflict. This is one of the many activities that the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 participates in to support the community. Service to their community, their state, and their nation is a primary part of the cadet programs within the CAP.

The Museum Educator, Emily Doherty, provided the cadets and senior members a guided tour of the museum’s exhibits. Mike Siggins, museum volunteer, offered a detailed history of the museum’s military vehicles. The events also included a living history Encampment that the cadets and attendees were able to participate in to experience field conditions similar to those experienced by the veterans during the war.

Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday (except holidays) at 7:00 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located at the Lancaster Municipal Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are always welcome.

CAP, the longtime allvolunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force. In this role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 aircraft, performs about 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. CAP’s 61,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state, and local agencies. In addition, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace/STEM education, and its members serve as mentors to over 26,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
