PARKING McCormick Place offers on-site parking for $19 per day. This is a flat fee regardless of the amount of time the vehicle is parked. Overnight parking is not available, and there are no inand-out privileges. On Saturday and Sunday only, the Chicago Auto Show operates free shuttle bus service to and from the Millennium Park Garage and East Monroe Garage. Weekend parking rates are $14 per day. General Motors’ 2011 Chevrolet Volt has been hyped for more than three-years. The American automaker brings the long-awaited plug-in extend-range electric hybrid production model to market in the fourth quarter of 2010. Volt travels 40 miles on electric-only power stored in an onboard battery pack before switching to a gasoline powered generator that runs the Volt’s electric drivetrain for a travel range of 300 miles. A new decade of optimism rises today along with the curtain that signals the start of the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, running through February 21. With it come legions of patrons who step through the turnstiles into a world of sheet metal dreams and excitement that has been a regional tradition since the first Chicago show opened in 1901. In many ways, this year’s show is much like that of the first, as automakers bring new-fangled vehicles to market with the hope that their particular model will spark the buying public’s interest to the magical moment when consumers reach into their pockets and make the purchase of a brand new vehicle. “People need to feel OK about going to look again,� said Paul Brian, director of communications for the Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA). “While the Chicago Auto Show is an exquisite tool for shopping, the second word in ‘auto show’ is ‘show,’ and there is plenty of that for a day of family entertainment.� Brian said there are some surprises in store at this year’s show. Similar, he said, to last year’s Corvette Stingray concept at the “Transformers� display. “It’s always good to keep a couple rabbits in the hat until opening day. It helps keep the buzz up,� he said. Brian hinted that electric cars are one of the “rabbits.� Many manufacturers displaying their rolling wares at this year’s show have invested billions of dollars on hybrid and electric vehicles that are meant to drive consumers into a new era – concerned more about higher energy costs and recapturing a green environment and less about power, speed and cosmetic bling. The plug-in Chevy Volt fourdoor sedan has a 40-mile range and can be charged overnight (eight hours) using a convenient 120-volt outlet. THE POPULAR CHOICE BY BOB KROUPA Automotive Writers Group

Compact vehicles once again take center stage at this year’s Chicago Auto Show. This segment is filled with an abundance of models from most domestic and foreign manufacturers. Today’s compacts have standard features that were once only optional. Leather seats, navigation systems, moon roofs and allwheel drive found on many midsize sedans now are available to the compact car segment. Popular body styles include two-door, four-door, hatchback and wagon models. The compact segment is most noted for its economy – from the budget-size purchase price to its fuel-sipping mileage. In today’s market, the price leader is the Hyundai Accent with a base cost of $9,970, followed closely by the Nissan Versa at $9,990. Others start in the low $13,000 range. Loading a compact vehicle with a full array of options can bring the bottom line into the mid- to upper-teens. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, most gasolinefueled compact cars average 25 miles per gallon in city traffic and 34 mpg on the highway. At the top of the energy efficiency list is Toyota Yaris with 29 mpg/city and 36 mpg/highway fuel economy. The Chevrolet Cobalt achieves 25 mpg/city and 37 mpg/highway. The Kia Rio averages 27/36, the Hyundai Accent averages 27/36, the Honda Civic averages 25/36 and the Chevrolet Aveo averages 27/35 mpg. These are important statistics that are right on track to meet the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and come as good news to the consumer. The standards require 42 mpg for cars and 26 mpg for light trucks by 2016. These are averages

each manufacturer’s fleet of vehicles must meet. Four cylinder engines power the majority of compacts in the market. Today’s engine technology is such that these engines can be tuned to provide ample power for the vehicles. In fact, many of these engines are becoming standard motors in some mid-size cars. The most popular compacts, based on 2009 sales, include the Toyota Corolla/Matrix as the sales leader with 296,874 units sold. The Honda Civic is another popular choice with 259,722 units. Holding down the No. 3 slot is the Ford Focus with 160,433 units. All these vehicles can be found on display at the Chicago Auto Show, where consumers can shop and compare vehicles at a leisurely, no-pressure pace. Consumers have the opportunity to evaluate several new compact production vehicles that are making their first appearance at the Chicago show. The new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze has three trim levels, a contemporary wrap-around instrument panel and two 4-cylinder engine choices. One is turbo-charged for the performance minded, coupled with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Ten airbags come standard. Ford premiers the all new 2012 Focus, offered in a five-door hatchback and four-door sedan. The car is meant to “demonstrate how Ford will bring European flavor to America,� Ford European chief designer Martin Smith said. Ford also said the new Focus, getting 24/city and 35/highway mpg, will have gas mileage that exceeds the current Focus. The Kia Soul Exclaim lives up to its name. It is always good to know that your efforts are noticed. For Ford Motor Co., recognition comes in pairs as the American automaker took prestigious honors for the 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year Award. Announced last month during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the North American Car of the Year was awarded to the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid while the 2010 Ford Transit Connect took home the North American Truck of the Year honor. The awards are not given by a single media outlet, but rather chosen by a jury of 49 prominent full-time automotive journalists who represent newspapers, magazines, television, radio and Web sites in Canada and the U.S. Vehicles are considered for their innovation, handling, performance, safety, driver satisfaction and value. “Jury members for North America Car and Truck of the Year have strict criteria to follow,� said veteran juror Dave Van Sickle, auto columnist for Motor Matters Syndicate. “The vehicles have to be significantly new with technical and quality innovations that are groundbreaking. We’re not looking for cookie-cutter copies of a model’s previous generation.� Van Sickle’s impression first starts with interior functionality and comfort. “The interior, particularly from the driver position, is extremely important to me,� he said. “That’s the part of the car you’ll see every day when you slide behind the wheel to drive it.� Van Sickle said exterior styling is the initial attraction to any car of truck, but it is the interior that the owner has to deal with on a day-to-day basis. “The interior can be very pleasing and well done with quality workmanship, but if it doesn’t

Honda Motor Co. showed off the production model of the 2011 CR-Z, a sporty two-seater hybrid that will go on sale late summer in the U.S. at the Detroit auto show last month. The CR-Z hatchback is Honda’s attempt to bring a bit of flair to the hybrid segment, whose design has long dominated by the boxy lines and sloping roofs of four-door sedans like the Toyota Prius. The two-door CR-Z, by contrast, features a compact profile and roadster look. It also comes with multiple drive modes that allow cycling between sportier or more fuel-efficient drive settings. “CR-Z is a look into the future of sporty and personal driving,� said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. The new CR-Z will get 36 city miles per gallon and 38 highway mpg, according to Honda’s preliminary estimates. That’s below the fuel economy of its flagship hybrid, the Insight. It’s also less efficient the 2010 Prius, which gets 51 city/48 highway mpg, according to the EPA. Unlike other hybrids, CR-Z drivers will be able to cycle between three drive modes: sport, normal and economy. Sport mode enhances the car’s performance, while economy mode maximizes fuel economy. The 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine will be available in 6-speed manual transmission or with a continuously variable transmission and boasts 122 horsepower. Pricing will be announced at a late date, Honda said. The CR-Z is Honda’s third entry in the gas-electric hybrid market, after the Civic hybrid and the Insight. The Insight, a four-door sedan that went on sale in the U.S. last year, was designed to be a cheaper competitor to the market-leading Prius. AP

2010 F-150 is the strongest in its class. The fully boxed, ladder style frame is not only strong but helps quiet things in the interior and helps to control the ride. Hydroformed and highstrength steel side rails contribute to the strength and safety of the frame. Ford has upgraded the brake system on the 2010 F-150. Manufacturers have made getting in and out of vehicle more interesting with new door innovations that are remarkable. Honda has authorized a $2,000 incentive on its 2010 Acura RL and $1,500 to $2,000 on the TL model. Volvo has offered $6,000 in dealer incentives on its 2010 Volvo C70 and CX70 models, and $4,000 on its Volvo S80 model. These and other incentives are certainly worth pursing in the search for a special new vehicle at this year’s Chicago Auto Show.

Last year’s Chicago Auto Show gave patrons a glimpse of production cars coming down the road for the 2010 decade. Some were wild and impractical. Others were right on track. More and more, automakers are paying closer attention to developing studio designs that give the buying public a realworld look of what the production version of a vehicle will look like. Recent examples are the Chevrolet Camaro, the Dodge Challenger and the Ford Flex. With the exception of the interiors, nearly 90 percent of these concept car’s exterior design and functionality went to production and are seen on the road today. Today’s vehicles are safer than ever thanks to manufacturers’ latest technologies installed as standard equipment in most vehicles. Other high-tech safety features are available as add-on options. Auto safety is dependent on many factors. However, it all starts with the driver and passengers. Going through the simple routine of fastening seat belts is the first step to safety. Ford has taken seat belt technology to the next level with its introduction of a seat belt-mounted airbag. The seat belt is wider allowing the airbag to be sewn into the belt. It is deployed from the buckle to the shoulder, making it gentler than the front airbags for children, seniors and smaller adults. The Ford Explorer sport utility will be Ford’s first vehicle to utilize the new airbag seat belts, scheduled to be an optional feature in its 2011 model introduced this fall. Airbag technology was introduced more than 30 years ago with vehicle front airbags. Today, airbags offer protection from front, side and roll-over accidents. Some automakers offer as many as 10 airbags in their vehicles. An example is the Lexus RX350 crossover with front airbags, two front knee bags, two front side airbags, two rear side airbags and two side curtain airbags. Vehicle safety equipment and numerous features are added to new models annually. One new feature is auto-reverse windows. Many vehicles with power windows have a one-touch, express up function. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has addressed this function identifying a problem with regard to an obstruction being in the way as the window powers upward. The solution is an auto-reversing system that automatically sends the window downward if there is an obstacle between the window glass and the window frame. The system is a standard feature on the 2010 models including those from Acura, Lexus, Mercedes Benz and Volvo. Chrysler introduced similar technology in its minivan segment with auto-reversing side-sliding doors and rear hatch lid. The system immediately retracts from its closing motion with the slightest resistance. Backing up a vehicle is always a concern, especially where children might be present. The addition of a back-up camera is a good solution, but requires a navigation system to be able to view the rear of the vehicle. The technology found in the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox now projects rear vision of the vehicle into a portion of the rearview mirror without the expense of a navigation system. MICHELIN NORTH AMERICA

In winter, consideration must be given to tires. An all-season tire is a compromise that will not perform as well as a purposebuilt winter tire. Two identical vehicles, one with all-season tires and one with winter tires, have very different performance levels.

The sport utility and crossover segment is still in vogue, but with a twist. Size it king – not bigger, but smaller. Accompanying the downsize is a more cost-effective purchase price and enhanced miles per gallon for most models. Today’s models are powered by gasoline or diesel engines as well as hybrid systems with front, rear and all-wheel drive configurations. The sales leader for 2009 is the Honda CR-V with 191,214 units sold, followed by Ford Escape at 173,044 units and Toyota RAV4 with 149,088 units. These models are all classified as compact SUVs, which is somewhat of a misnomer. These models have ample room for passengers and cargo. Each has seating for five passengers – two in front and three in the rear. The RAV4 offers a third seat option for two additional smaller passengers. Cargo space, measured in cubic feet with the rear seats folded, is lead by RAV4 with 39 cubic feet. The Ford Escape has 38 cubic feet of capacity and CR-V has 25.5 cubic feet. From a fuel-economy perspective, the RAV4 achieves 22/city and 28/highway miles per gallon; the CR-V gets 21/28 mpg, while the Ford Escape yields 21/28 mpg. These mileage readings are for base engines with automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The Escape also offers a hybrid system that registers 34 city and 31 highway mpg. Ford Escape Hybrid’s city mileage is higher due to an Auto Stop feature that shuts off the vehicle when waiting out a stop light, thereby utilizing no fuel and emitting no emissions. The SUV immediately restarts when pressure is lifted off the brake pedal. Base costs for the top three are competitively priced. The Honda CRV is priced at $21,545 and the Toyota RAV4 is $21,675. The Ford Escape runs $20,550. Ford Escape Hybrid is considerably higher at a price that starts less than $30,000. Compact sport utilities are only the starting point. There are also mid-size base and premium models. Large SUVs with some classified in the luxury SUV category are still in the segment, but losing ground to the popularity of scaled down versions. Leading the 2009 sales of the midsize SUVs is the Lexus RX 350, the bench-

mark for this segment with 93,379 sales. Close behind was the Chevrolet Traverse at 91,074 units and the Ford Edge registering 88,548 sales. The Lexus RX 350 is termed a premium SUV based on standard content features such as leather, dual climate control, 18-inch wheels, push button start, 10 air bags and more. The RX 350 base price is $37,625 compared to the Traverse at $29,224 and the Edge for $26,920. These three mid-size SUVs offer virtually the same mileage with the RX 350 and the Edge at 18/city and 25/highway mpg, while the Travers shows 17/24. Other mid-size SUVs have unique features such as the Subaru Tribeca with standard all-wheel drive. Hyundai and Kia sport utilities have the top warranty in the industry with their powertrain at 10 years/100,000 miles and bumper-to-bumper at five years/60,000 miles. The 2009 sales leader for large sport utilities is the Chevrolet Tahoe with 73,245 sales. It has unique seating for up to nine passengers, has a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds and uses fuel that is E85 compatible. With the base price of $37,280, Tahoe has a fuel return of 15/city and 21/highway miles per gallon. A Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid version also is available. The No. 2 sales spot goes to the GMC Yukon with 46,638 units. It sells for a base price of $38,020 and garners 14/city and 19/highway mpg. The Chevrolet Suburban takes third place with 41,055 sales at a base price of $40,635 and a fuel mileage rating of 14/19 mpg. The luxury models included the Cadillac Escalade and the new 2010 Lincoln MKT. The Cadillac SRX has a redesigned body with userfriendly dash controls and the base 3.0 liter, 265 horsepower V-6 engine that provides ample power for this premium model SUV at a base price of $34,155. SRX seats five passengers with loads of rear cargo area featuring sliding tie downs and a covered recessed storage bin. Its fuel efficiency registers 18/city and 25/highway mpg. The Toyota4Runner offers a supplemental manual gear box for all-wheel drive. Kia has a winner with the all-new mid-size Sorento built at a new state-of-the-art facility in West Point, Ga. The styling and dash layout are impressive, as is overall space allocation for five passengers. The cargo area harnesses 37 cubic feet of space to carry gear. Kia Sorento lists a base price of $19,995, with fuel economy of 21/city and 28/highway. The Ford Flex is a spacious SUV with plenty of second-row passenger seating. A third row seat is also available for two additional passengers. Hauling cargo is a breeze with 47.5 cubic feet of volume. At a base price of $28,550, this SUV is another popular choice with those requiring a quality-built vehicle with room for an active lifestyle.

Ford looks smart with new Focus BY DEE-ANN DURBIN AND TOM KRISHER AP Auto Writers DEARBORN, MICH. | In a year that humbled most automakers in America, Ford came out looking smart. As 2009 unfolded, auto sales slowed, General Motors and Chrysler nearly collapsed and Toyota faced safety questions after its largest U.S. recall ever. But Ford Motor Co. turned a third-quarter profit, gained market share and saw sales jump 33 percent in December. It was a big turnaround for the second-largest U.S. automaker, which three years ago teetered on the brink of financial ruin. Thanks to some shrewd moves, Ford is blazing a trail for its Detroit rivals. Under CEO Alan Mulally, Ford borrowed billions before credit markets froze, allowing it to quickly invest in cars and trucks that have stabilized its sales. It also trimmed its lineup, streamlined development and began standardizing most parts for its cars no matter where they’re sold in the world. Those efforts culminated in the launch of the 2012 Ford Focus at the Detroit auto show last month. Ford hopes the car becomes the standard for how to economically build a vehicle for the world. This new “world car” shares about 80 percent of its components with twin models in Europe and Asia. Because of the way the 106-year-old company was organized, previous models of the Focus were designed separately by region and didn’t share many parts. While Ford’s global product development mimics systems already used by the Japanese, Germany’s Volkswagen AG and others, it’s far ahead of domestic competitors. Chrysler LLC, which sells relatively few cars outside North America, only recently gained the kind of global reach that Ford has had, when Italian automaker Fiat SpA took control. General Motors Corp. has a global product develop-

The next-generation Ford Focus hatchback was revealed at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Chairman Bill Ford Jr., developed a plan to cut brands such as Jaguar and Volvo and focus on just 20 nameplates, while controlling labor costs and combining Ford’s global design and engineering. The changes have transformed Ford. Money saved by sharing parts globally gets pumped back into new technology, such as hybrid batteries and better air bags, that can be spread more quickly across a common lineup. Fewer designs mean fewer glitches and costly repairs. And U.S. buyers will now see more small cars because Ford believes it can make a profit on them. Ford says it has cut vehicle development costs by 60 percent since 2006. Mulally, 64, said his years at Boeing helped him immediately grasp what Ford needed to do. “You’d never have a 737 that would be different for the United States and Europe. I mean, it’s a plane,” he told The Associated Press in a recent interview. “It’s

Michael Robinet, vice president of global vehicle forecasts at CSM Worldwide, predicts that by 2015, Ford will be making 719,000 cars off of every vehicle underbody it has compared with an industry average of 450,000. Toyota Motor Co. will be making 835,000. “Ford truly has a global brand, which GM doesn’t have,” said Erich Merkle, president of the consulting company autoconomy.com. “You don’t buy a GM. You buy a Chevrolet or an Opel or a Daewoo or a Buick. Their brands are very fragmented around the world.” Ford had similar problems in 2006, when it had 97 different vehicle nameplates and was saddled with costly labor agreements, sliding market share and a dysfunctional bureaucracy. A wider version of Honda Motor Co.’s Japanese Accord is sold as the Acura TSX in the U.S., while Nissan Motor Co.’s Versa is sold as the Tiida and the Latio in Europe, Asia, South Africa and South America. These automakers have reaped profits from small cars because they stopped designing individual versions for each market. The Focus builds on what Ford began with the Fiesta subcompact, which went on sale first in Europe and Asia and will hit U.S. showrooms this summer. The car shares 65 percent of its parts worldwide. Mulally said 10 percent to 15 percent of parts will always be different because of regional tastes. Meanwhile, the 2012 Focus goes on sale worldwide early next year, and Ford hopes its stylish design, handy hatchback and fuel economy keep the car a strong seller. It

was the third best-selling small car in the U.S. last year, behind the Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic. Ford has sold 9 million Focuses worldwide since the car’s introduction ten years ago. The changes in product development wouldn’t have been possible without another Mulally decision: Borrowing $23.5 billion in 2006 so that even in an economic downturn, Ford could continue a revamp of its products that began in 2005. Mulally dumped brands so the automaker could concentrate on Ford, Lincoln and Mercury. The company plugged away, even as it posted the worst loss in its history — $14.6 billion — in 2008. “We took those losses and we borrowed that money so we could do this transformation,” Mulally said. “In the automobile business, like nothing I’ve ever seen, you cannot get behind.” Chrysler and GM also took out loans for restructuring and last year were forced to borrow from the government when credit froze up. Ford, the 52-year-old chairman, says Mulally’s plan is succeeding, unlike past turnaround efforts, because it is narrowly focused on core brands, involves everyone and proceeds methodically instead of taking risks. “This is about risk elimination, because the bets we place in this company are so huge that we need to make sure that everything is as thoroughly vetted as they can possibly be,” he told the AP at Ford’s Dearborn headquarters. Ford isn’t out of the woods. It still has a staggering $27 billion in debt, far more than GM and Chrysler because it wasn’t able to shed it in bankruptcy proceedings. It also doesn’t expect a fullyear profit until 2011. But Bill Ford and Mulally say they are sticking to their debt repayment plans and prefer their position to a bankruptcy filing or federal aid. “We have the ability to run our company with no oversight other than from the shareholders,” Bill Ford said.
