SHARON DARNELL, PRESIDENT OF THE CHESTERTON TOWN COUNCIL Christmas meant making decorations for our front lawn with my dad—plywood and print manger, Santa with sleigh and reindeer. “To me, what we’ve done with ‘A Christmas Story’ Comes Home exhibit is very special and makes memories for people, brings back memories. Everyone takes great pride in the kinds of memories we’re allowing our visitors and our residents. The exhibit is a great source of pride for all of the locals to talk to their family and friends about the region and Lake County and it’s done in a first class manner. We see a lot of the same faces every year and it’s part of family tradition all over America and to me, that’s very special. From the board member to the visitor staff and everyone in between, everyone works themselves to death to make sure this things comes off every year without a hitch, and it’s fun and it’s fun watching people have fun in our house.”

MAYOR JOE STAHURA, CITY OF WHITING

T

“I always remember my cousin Jim showing up on Christmas dressed as Santa. We would have our heads poking out the door looking for him coming down the street. Even though we had seven siblings, my mom would often arrange for a foster child to spend the holidays with us. It’s hard not to remember those days and in my old age, I now realize how big of a heart my O NY mom actually had. Another memory V. M AR is after we had our two daughters, TIN seeing them waiting on the floor in front of their grandfather while he was passing out gifts was always a treat. Now I can enjoy watching my grandkids.”

DR. DAN KEILMAN, ADMINISTRATOR IN THE DUNELAND SCHOOL CORPORATION FOR FOUR DECADES I have many great memories of my childhood growing up in Dyer, Indiana, especially of my Christmases there. It was a small farming community but the distances between farms and homes were always replete with Christmas trees, nativity scenes, and stand-alone Santa Clauses. Christmas plays were the highlights of every school year. One year in third grade I emerged as a child prodigy when the nuns provided me the opportunity to play Santa Claus in a Christmas play. Following the Great Depression our family had very little money, but somehow some wonderful Christmas gifts emerged every year. One Christmas Eve I received my first bicycle. If only it has not showed on Christmas Day! I also loved serving any mass at church, but there was no greater thrill than serving midnight mass in the midst of Christmas trees, a very large manger scene, more candles on the altar than on any other day, listening to the best Christmas carols ever sung, and knowing that in so many other places in the world people were experiencing peace on earth and good will toward men.”

8 | HOLIDAY TWO | NOVEMBER 26, 2014

BERNIE DOYLE, MANAGER FOR THE TOWN OF CHESTERTON “Valparaiso, Christmas Eve, 1960. Eisenhower was president, stores were closed on Sundays, no cell phones or computers to complicate our lives. The “Greatest Generation” was in full swing raising their families of “Boomers.” There were only four channels on TV, all in black and white and the price of gas was 35 cents a gallon. We lived right across from Center School and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church at Franklin and Erie Streets. That Christmas Eve was unique in that it was the only time when my entire family was together for the holidays. This included both my maternal and paternal grandparents, my paternal uncle and aunt, and both first cousins. Even my maternal Uncle George and Aunt Mildred were in town from Wyoming. Driving in from Wyoming was a big deal back in 1960. Although there would be other holiday gatherings, this would be the only time we were all together in “our” house. I remember seeing my grandparents dance for the first time that night along with my parents, aunts and uncles. We had holiday music and jazz playing on the Motorola record player in the living room. The huge (at least to a 6 year old) Christmas tree was fully decorated with a slew of presents lying underneath and my mother’s homemade candles lit throughout the house. Everyone dressed up for Christmas Eve parties back then and our family was no exception. The men all had suits on and the women were in dresses and heels. It was a beautiful scene; my family laughing and sipping sherry, the men smoking pipes, the ladies poking fun at their husbands and corralling us kids with holiday treats, Christmas music, snow on the ground, the anticipation of Christmas Day and then wham! The large Christmas tree in the living room

came crashing down with ornaments breaking and pine needles everywhere. Everything stopped—the music, the talking and laughing . . . silence. Seems our large tabby cat “Cheetah” decided that was time to climb up to the top of the tree and ride it down to the ground before anyone noticed his presence at the top of the tree. Without losing a beat, my mother and father had the tree back upright, broken ornaments cleaned up, and the lights plugged back in (the big, glass ones that would burn your fingers), the silver foil we put on trees back then was straightened up and we were back in action minus “Cheetah” who seemed traumatized by his experience having departed the living room. The next morning was quite a treat for me. I was the first of my brothers to make it to our living room. I don’t think anything can capture the excitement of coming down stairs on Christmas morning to see what Santa has brought. My eyes were transfixed toward the back of the tree on the object I had wished for, a Flexible Flyer sled. Now to any kid who has access to a real hill, a Flexible Flyer was the preferred device to get you down with speed and control in style. I had first seen one in Johnston’s Sporting Goods on Lincolnway in Valpo and knew right away that I had to have one. The Flexible Flyer was the Ferrari of sleds. Plus, for us in Valpo we had the best sledding hill in Northern Indiana and that was Forest Park. I can still feel the rush of starting at the top with all the other kids on their sleds to get down the hill and to the bridge that covered the small stream that cut across the golf course. Only the best sleds and good technique would get you that far. The only drawback was the long walk back and then up the hill, but what a way to spend a wintery Saturday afternoon when you’re a kid.”

f you are missing any of your teeth, you have some big decisions to make and important questions that need to be answered: What are various ways to replace missing teeth? Why are dental implants considered the gold standard of tooth replacement? What can happen to your health when you live without teeth for a prolonged period? Starting with Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark’s serpenditous discovery of osseointegration (implants fusing to bone), dental implants have revolutionized dentistry. Today in our offices we can regenerate patients’ form, function and esthetics. We are truly changing lives to the highest level with the miracle of dental implants.

lower teeth. With this procedure, you can come as close to having a new set of permanent teeth as is currently possible. Those who replace their dentures with All-on-FourTM dental implants will never have to remove their replacement teeth again for cleaning because their new teeth can be cleaned and maintained just like a natural set of teeth. If you are looking at the possibility of wearing dentures but choose All-on-FourTM dental implants, you will never have to experience the crippling effects of loose dentures, being unable to eat the foods you enjoy, messy adhesives, removing teeth at night, the embarrassment of dentures slipping during speech or smiling or the bad breath associated with wearing dentures.

Here are some facts and trends to consider. More than 20 million people in the US are missing all of their natural teeth. More than 100 million people are missing from 11-15 teeth. Maintaining good, healthy teeth is certainly a worthy goal but keeping teeth for a lifetime is not always possible, despite the impressive achievement of preventative dentistry and the best efforts of our patients. Trauma, systemic disease, dental decay, periodontal disease, poor genetics, dental phobia, and normal wear and tear are just few of the reasons for tooth loss. Almost 80 percent of consumers with missing teeth are now aware of dental implants and realize the advantage of a permanent solution that mimics nature in function and fit and looks even better than nature may have originally provided. It is now possible to treat virtually every edentulous patient with aesthetic and functionally fixed no dentures solutions. We work with patients missing as few as one tooth or as many as all of their teeth.

According to Dr. Atcha “My patients appreciate being able to extend our relationship to a wide variety of treatment procedures instead of being referred out to a different office”, As a leader in the field of implant dentistry, Dr. Atcha has the experience that matters, the credentials that count. He has surgically placed and restored 1000s of dental implant procedures and has published several articles on dental implants in the field. “The key elements that allow patients to seek our office out are communication, relationship building & education” says Dr. Atcha. I like to personally build relationships with each and every patient and educate them about their options and spend time with them one on one by giving them a comprehensive snapshot of their clinical situation and discussing short-and long term objective. “Educated patients make the best healthcare decisions for themselves”, according to Atcha. With a hard-working and a dedicated staff that treats our patients with so much care and service, we have many people who want to be our patients. A huge part of my role in my practice is educating patients about tooth loss and its impact on quality of life, says Dr. Atcha. We have before and after pictures of hundreds of patients we have treated and success stories of our patients we can share with our new patients to build trust and confidence that there are others like them. Our happy patients are very open and would love to share their experience as to how satisfied they are with the care and the service we .y have provided them. They can also be found on www.youtube.com/drirfanatchadds

In our office Dr. Atcha focuses on giving his patients options with either a few implants or a full fixed restorations as a cost-effective way to treat patients with failing or missing teeth. With the revolutionary All-On-4™ dental implants Dr. Atcha uses 4 specially placed implants per jaw to secure dental implant teeth without bone grafting even when failing teeth have to be removed. the All-on-FourTM dental implant technique is a clinically proven solution for those who have lost or are about to lose all of their upper and/or

continued from page 11 in Northwest Indiana before he joined the army in WW2 and then became a host of his own radio show on WOR-AM where he would read many of the pieces he wrote, including the stories that would later become part of this now classic movie. In the 1970s, Shepherd hosted two television shows on PBS—Shepherd’s Pie and Jean Shepherd’s America. He died in 1999 in Florida where he had retired. “A Christmas Story” debuted around Thanksgiving in 1983, but it wasn’t a success at the box office. In fact, by Christmas it was showing at very few theaters. Part of what made the movie such a classic hit today is, aside from its humorous and nostalgic content, the fact that TBS played the movie in a marathon format during the holiday season. Unfortunately, the popularity of Shepherd’s movie came after his death so he was unaware of how popular his work has become. In an interview Shepherd gave in 1971 he crystallized the appeal of his storytelling ability that the world has come to love in his film. “You can tell a story about anything but the only stories that have any fidelity, any feeling, are stories that either did happen to you or conceivably could have happened to you.”

s the weather progresses from chilly to downright frigid, what better time to break out the soup tureen and ladle up a little warmth? Laura Verheaghe, owner of Red Cup Café in downtown Chesterton makes a number of soups from scratch every day and she says that her customers come in looking for what’s on the menu.

“Soup is comforting. It’s easy to eat. If you don’t know what to have for lunch, a grilled cheese made with brie and a barley mushroom soup is so easy and so good. People will come in at 9:30 in the morning during the chilly months looking for a bowl of soup. You have to come early because even though I make a lot, it goes fast!” Verheaghe says that she is accustomed to making soup according to the needs of her clients. “Give me 24 hours and I will make you any soup you want. I always make a vegan soup and I use vegetable stock, so once a week we offer vegan Portobello mushroom and barley soup, a gluten-free chicken noodle, and I’ve been making a butternut squash and apple with a hint of cumin or red pepper, so the sweet and the savory complement each other. We do a vegan cheese and potato soup, as well as a vegetarian potato soup, and a vegan potato celery soup. If I make a soup that is vegan with a cream base, I use either almond milk or coconut milk, depending on the flavor. We garnish with our own croutons we make from scratch,” she says.

At Concept Art Stores in Merrillville, the holidays are very busy as shoppers purchase a variety of art and crafting supplies as well as creative adult and kids’ activities. “We have thousands and thousands of beads,” says Kathy Guy, assistant manager, noting they have the largest selection of art and jewelry making in Northwest Indiana. “We have a lot of customers making jewelry to give as gifts.” For young gift givers, Guy says they offer kits for creating small works of art. “We also sell paint by number kits for those ranging from a year and half to 80 years old and above and everything in between.”

e all find our sweet tooth during the holiday season. With candy canes and chocolates seemingly around every corner, can you blame us? The best thing about candy at the holidays – besides its taste, of course – is its ability to serve as a deliciously beautiful decorating item. From hard candies to chewy taffies, sweets are A SPECIAL PUBLICATION OF THE TIMES MEDIA CO.

just more tools in your creativity toolbox. Bright colors allow for playful combinations with flowers or silk on the table, or with ornaments and garland on the tree for all ages to enjoy.

PEPPERMINTS

These versatile little candies are great for decorating because of their various shapes and sizes. They come in the traditional discshaped mint or the soft, chewable type. They also can be found in the form of a rod or in thin hard-candy strips. Grab a large vase and fill it with four layers of peppermint candy varieties. Use the vase as a table centerpiece on top of a red or white tablecloth. The colors will work together to create sweet and stunning piece sure to catch the attention of your sweet-toothed guests.

GUMDROP WREATHS

Multicolored gumdrops can make for a vibrant wreath perfect for a playroom or family game space. Start by purchasing a foam or plastic form from a craft store and then hot glue candies to it from the inside out. Continue gluing until both the front and sides are completely covered in candy. Since this is a child-related project, get them involved by having them unwrap the candies while you operate the hot glue gun. You can also have the young ones tie on the ribbon at the end of the process and find a place to hang it.

BAKED COOKIES

Cookies make not only a sweet treat for the holidays, but also a fun decoration. Mold readymade dough into various shapes such as stars or snowflakes by using cookie cutters – and don’t forget to punch out a hole with a straw before cooking. Leave the cookies you’ll use for decorations in the oven a little longer for easy hanging and durability. Once the baking is done, tie a ribbon through your cookies and use them as tree ornament or within a decorative display. A SPECIAL PUBLICATION OF THE TIMES MEDIA CO.

EDIBLE ARRANGEMENTS PUTS HOLIDAY TREATS IN THE SPOTLIGHT Move over sugarplums and gumdrops, this holiday season reindeer-shaped pineapples dipped in semisweet chocolate and pineapple crafted Stars of David will be dancing in our heads and sweetening up our holiday spirits. “We have a large variety of holiday options,” says Ann Lichnerowicz, owner of Edible Arrangements with stores in Portage and Valparaiso. The aforementioned reindeer are part of the Spectacular Sleigh Ride Bouquet, a Christmas arrangement with swizzle apple Fruit Truffles, pineapple stars and white chocolate dipped strawberries along with a healthy backdrop, kale used as greenery. Also for the holidays, their Bright & Shiny Hanukkah package fresh strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe, apple bites dipped in semisweet chocolate with white drizzle and pineapples cut into the shape of the Star of David along with a Hanukkah balloon bundle. “For this season’s entertaining we also feature platters such as our classic fruit trio—semisweet chocolate dipped pineapple daisies, semisweet chocolate dipped strawberries and white and semisweet chocolate dipped bananas,” says Lichnerowicz. “We truly have an edible arrangement for every holiday need.”

A single strand of red or blue lights around the door looks elegant and warm. Or a holiday topiary or fresh pine display decorated by white twinkle lights is just the right touch. Decide if you like lights that blink, or ones that stay lit. Blinking lights may seem festive for those looking at the home from the outside, but for those who may have to sleep next to that blinking window, it might be more of a nuisance, so light choice and location is important. P

acked with nostalgia and mouthwatering flavors that bring you back to mom’s home cooking, comfort food offers warm feelings on even the most bitter cold days. However, those time-honored recipes are usually packed with calorie- and fat-laden ingredients that can undo any healthy eating intentions. When you want to warm up with beloved recipes, look for tools to help

you, such as the NuVal-Nutritional Scoring System. Many grocery retailers now provide these scores on the shelf tag to help shoppers find more nutritious food choices. On a scale of 1 to 100, foods and beverages are scored based on their nutritional content, with the most nutritious choices scoring highest. By focusing on the NuVal scores of the ingredients they use in dishes, consumers can amp up the nutrition of their favorite comfort foods. Marisa Paolillo, nutritionist with NuVal,

CUSTOMIZE MENUS FOR DINING OPTIONS Holiday meals for all dietary needs is not a problem says Tony Houser, kitchen manager at Third Coast Spice Café in Chesterton. “Our menu has glutenfree, vegetarian and vegan options and we can do special items or make changes for any diet restrictions,” he says. “We’re very careful about cross-examination and have special areas of the kitchen to cook certain foods.” Houser also notes that since they don’t make anything from mixes, they know what they’re serving and what’s in their foods. “We don’t necessarily add anything to the menu for the holidays,” he says, “but you know if you’re eating here, it’ll be healthy and exactly what you ordered.”

OUR MENU HAS GLUTEN-FREE, VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN OPTIONS AND WE CAN DO SPECIAL ITEMS OR MAKE CHANGES FOR ANY DIET RESTRICTIONS Tony Houser, kitchen manager at Third Coast Spice Café suggests these simple swaps to add flavor and nutrition to common comfort dishes.

BAKED STUFFED POTATO (a white baking potato has a score of 99):

• Add color and nutrition by topping potatoes with cooked vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, red bell peppers, shredded carrots, mushrooms or onions (scores of 100). • Make it a protein-rich satisfying meal by adding 95 percent lean ground beef (score of 57), or 93 percent lean ground turkey (score of 72). • Sprinkle potatoes with calcium-rich dairy by adding 2 ounces of reduced-fat cheese. • Swap sour cream toppings with fat-free Greek yogurt (score of 100) or low-fat cottage cheese with garlic or onion flakes.

MACARONI AND CHEESE:

• Choose whole wheat pasta to boost fiber and protein. • Reduce calories by using reducedfat cheese. • Add chopped vegetables like broccoli, spinach and mushrooms for flavor and fiber (score of 100). • Boost protein by adding 95 percent lean ground turkey (score of 72). • Right before baking, fold in fat-free

Greek yogurt (score of 100) to the cheese, macaroni and vegetable mixture. This gives the dish an extra creamy texture and a boost of protein and calcium.

MEATLOAF:

• Use 95 percent lean ground beef (score of 57) or 93 percent lean ground turkey (score of 72). • Replace some of the meat with cooked grains such as quinoa (score of 95) or bulgur (score of 94). • Add texture and moisture to meatloaf by adding vegetables like mushrooms, onions and green peppers (score of 100). • Rather than ketchup, top meatloaf with tomato paste (score of 84). • Make your own bread crumbs by drying out slices of whole grain bread. According to Paolillo, many traditional comfort food recipes call for similar ingredients. “Look at the recipe,” she recommends. “The most immediate way to add nutrition is to incorporate the basics – vegetables, whole grains, reduced-fat dairy and lean sources of protein.” Find more recipes and ideas to help you enjoy your favorite comfort foods at www.nuval.com.

TREE GUIDELINES FOR EVERY HOME Following simple guidelines can make holiday tree shopping effortless. “Getting the right variety is essential,” says Steve Govert, owner of Leo’s Feed and Garden Center in Cedar Lake. “It’s also important to buy from a reputable place and to make sure that the trees weren’t cut too early.” Leo’s features four types of Christmas trees. The least expensive is Scotch pine. Others include Douglas Fir, Black Hills Spruces and, Govert’s favorite, Frasier Fir. “That’s the one I always get for my home,” he says. “Frasier Fir is great for needle retention, its needles are soft to the touch and it lasts a long time—making it great for the holidays.”

Now, that’s a tradition. Real trees become an extended family member for a month or so. We choose them, bring them home, set them up, decorate them and spend hours in front of them. They cover our gifts for safekeeping. They stimulate all of our senses – from the piney smell to the bright lights. That’s why choosing the perfect tree for your family is a vital part of the holiday season. Tree height, width and overall health are important factors to consider when you and your family go on your tree-picking excursion. Here’s what to look for in that perfect

he extended holiday season is no excuse to take a vacation from being a great pet parent, says Dr. Jeff Werber, Hollywood’s Vet to the Stars.

Keeping your dog happy and healthy this holiday season is easy, Werber says. He is sharing some seasonal tips. • Keep curious pets focused: Most pets will be curious about the tinsel, ornaments and ribbons of the season. Since most decorations are not petfriendly, keep them beyond reach and take necessary precautions and keep your pets focused on something they truly enjoy. If your dog begs at the table every night, chances are they’ll be begging at the holiday dinner table. With new people over and different kinds of food falling to the floor, it’ll be important to prevent distractions during dinner. Use healthy treats, such as Greenies, as a training tool to keep your dog away from guests’ dinner plates. • Give recognizable gifts: A whopping 85 percent of pet parents buy their dog a holiday present, according to the 2014 Greenies: Dog Owners Survey. In order for your pet to be as thrilled about

Pieces of drift wood collected during summer months can be displayed by themselves on the Christmas tree, or painted into holiday items like a Santa Claus or icicle. When planning for the big harvest meal (and the day-after dishes to follow), you can rely on tools such as the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System. Many grocery retailers now provide these scores on the shelf tag to help shoppers find more nutritious food choices. Based on a scale of 1 to 100, foods and beverages are scored based on their nutritional content, with the most nutritious choices scoring highest. The experts at NuVal suggest putting these power-packed foods on your preThanksgiving grocery list. Both fresh and nutritious, these ingredients can create new menu options for turkey leftovers. SPICE IT: Pair reheated turkey with baked spiced apples. Core and slice fresh apples (NuVal 100) and combine with raisins (NuVal 88), chopped pecans (NuVal 71), cinnamon and lemon. Roast for 30 minutes at 375 degrees. No need to add sugar. The apples provide all the sweetness you need. WRAP IT: For a lighter take on the traditional leftover turkey sandwich, chop cold turkey in small pieces and layer with raw vegetables, avocado (NuVal 88), mustard, Romaine lettuce (NuVal 100), tomatoes (NuVal 100), sliced red or green bell peppers (NuVal 100), shredded carrots (NuVal 100) and cucumbers (NuVal 100) in a tortilla wrap. CURRY IT: Need a quick 30-minute post-Thanksgiving meal that is both savory and sweet? NuVal’s pick is Curried Turkey with Raisins and Mushrooms. And though the restaurant is closed on Thanksgiving Day, on the day before the holiday, Teibel’s offers a complete turkey dinner for pick-up on call-ahead orders so there’s no fuss, only good eating when company arrives. “It’s a meal with an 18 to 20 pound turkey with sides like mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, yams and green bean casserole,” says Teibel, noting there’s enough food to serve 20.

Volunteer Bob Ahrendt portrays a traditional Swedish version of Santa at Holiday Traditions in the Dunes at Chellberg Farm.

Each year, visitors gather at Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm in Porter at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to celebrate the holidays the way that many of the settlers to those two homesteads did many decades ago. Holiday Traditions in the Dunes, a program funded by Friends of the Indiana Dunes, features volunteers who reenact scenes and tell stories from both the French and Swedish cultures that were native to the area.

ast year, local historians Susan Ruth Brown and Gary Brown told of Francis Rose Howe, granddaughter of fur trader and settler Joseph Bailly and how, in the winter of 1856, she put a single stocking of her own, along with one from her doll, up on the fireplace mantel in the hopes that Pere Noel, or Santa Claus, would visit. “In the morning she found a metal sewing needle in her doll’s stocking, and in her stocking she found thread on a wooden spool and enough fabric to sew her doll a dress,” says Susan Ruth Brown. didn’t seem impressed with the gift, but Brown explained that this was a treasure for little “Frankie,” as Bailly’s granddaughter was known, during these times. Suzanne Keldsen volunteers each year to educate and perform for guests. She explains that Christmas traditions celebrated by the Baillys may have included planting wheat on St. Barbara’s Day, December 4th and she has been known to bring in a sample of her own plant that she traditionally grew. “If it grows by Christmas, we’ll have a good summer

harvest. The children would then cut the wheat and place it in Jesus’ manger in the Nativity for the bedding. Keldsen also demonstrates that carrots placed in a shoe were traditionally left for Pere Noel, or Santa Claus, as a snack for his donkey that pulled his sleigh. Children hoped to receive a small treat in return, not unlike today’s Christmas tradition of stockings. Bill Smith, a seasonal ranger with the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, guided visitors to last year’s event through a display of a yule log cake, venison sausage, venison jerky, cranberry bread, and boiled squirrel with a side of cranberry sauce prepared by Ranger Jean-Pierre Anderson. “This is the meal that the French Canadians would eat. It was a very low key, quiet celebration because they were more reverent and it was a celebration to welcome back the light,” says Smith. All volunteers wish guests a “Joyeux Noel,” or a Merry Christmas in French. At nearby Chellberg Farm, the Santa Lucia legend is reenacted each year with processions of a volunteer who portrayed the character who carried food and drink to hungry folk in the province of Varmland, Sweden during a period of famine. Marilyn Arvidson coordinates the event at the Chellberg Farm each year. She had donned Swedish garb of yore and taught crowds about Santa Lucia for over two decades. “St. Lucia Day is December 13th, and right here in the Chellberg’s home, Naomi Chellberg Studebaker would get up early to serve coffee to the rest of her family,” says Arvidson. Naomi Chellberg Studebaker was granddaughter to Anders and Johanna Kjellberg and Johanna, the farm’s original owners. Naomi’s son, Henry Studebaker, was present at the event to portray his great grandfather, reclining in bed dressed in traditional costume. “My mother was born here. My grandparents babysat my brother and me here many times. It’s always exciting to come back here,” says Studebaker. A SPECIAL PUBLICATION OF THE TIMES MEDIA CO.

How lucky are we to live in Northwest Indiana where we have built-in recreation right here, year round?! The Dunes are a beautiful place to spend family days in the winter, no matter what the level of activity. Here are a few ideas for making your own holiday traditions in the Dunes! Although sledding and snowmobiling are not permitted in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, you can still enjoy recreational activities like hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Visitors must bring their own snowshoes and cross-country skis, as there are no rentals available, but the best option for crosscountry skiing is the Glenwood Dunes Trail. The 6.4 mile trail is a series of interconnecting loops through gently rolling wooded dunes. This trail can be accessed from either the Calumet Dunes Trail parking lot or the nearby Glenwood Dunes Trailhead parking lot. The three-mile Tolleston Dunes Trail is a good choice for advanced skiers. There are some difficult hills that can be tricky to navigate. A six-inch snow base is recommended for skiing. Trails are not groomed and hikers and visitors using snowshoes are asked to walk to the right of the cross-country ski tracks whenever possible. At the Indiana Dunes State Park, take part in the Indiana Dunes Christmas Bird Count on Sunday, December 14 which takes place throughout the park. Contact (219) 9261952 for more information. Cross country skiing trails are also offered throughout the Indiana Dunes State Park, although no ski rental is available.

If you don’t feel like playing bartender this holiday season, head over to Kelsey’s Steakhouse in Valparaiso. Bar Manager Mary Moncaba says they will have a number of holiday cocktails, including their two signature drinks, the Traffic Light Martini and the Kelsey’s Kisstini. “Our Traffic Light Martini features three different layers—green, orange, and red. The bottom layer, green, is Midori; the middle layer, orange, is Peachtree schnapps, Malibu, and orange juice; and the top layer, red, is Smirnoff and cranberry. Our Kelsey’s Kisstini is made with White Godiva, Dark Godiva, Chambord, and Absolut Vanilla.”

Pour Grand Marnier in a shallow bowl. Place sugar on a small plate and dip just the rims of six glasses in Grand Marnier and then in the sugar to form a thin sugared rim. Divide remaining orange liqueur and orange juice among the six prepared glasses. Top with champagne and serve immediately.

Don’t Live in Silence this Holiday Season

See Santa at the Mistletoe Market in Chesterton on Dec. 6.

It begins with thanksgiving and continues through the New Year, families and friends will be getting together for joyful, and noisy celebrations. But if you suffer from untreated hearing loss, all the laughter and conversation around you will not be music to your ears. Instead of feeling closer to your family, you will feel like you are on the outside looking in. When you can’t hear those around you and participate in the conversations and festivities, you may spend the par holidays holida feeling lonely, sad and isolated.

with these local holiday events DeDicateD to reconnecting people to conversation again.
