The girls awoke the next morning to find enough gold for each of them to get married, and so their father was able to see them get married and they all lived a happy life. Today we continue to celebrate this myth by hanging Christmas stockings on our fireplace mantles or anywhere in our homes. We hope to find treats in our stockings on Christmas morning, and perhaps there is no greater surprise for a young child than finding the tiny goodies hidden inside. f you are missing any of your teeth, you have some big decisions to make and important questions that need to be answered: What are various ways to replace missing teeth? Why are dental implants considered the gold standard of tooth replacement? What can happen to your health when you live without teeth for a prolonged period? Starting with Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark’s serpenditous discovery of osseointegration (implants fusing to bone), dental implants have revolutionized dentistry. Today in our offices we can regenerate patients’ form, function and esthetics. We are truly changing lives to the highest level with the miracle of dental implants.

lower teeth. With this procedure, you can come as close to having a new set of permanent teeth as is currently possible. Those who replace their dentures with All-on-FourTM dental implants will never have to remove their replacement teeth again for cleaning because their new teeth can be cleaned and maintained just like a natural set of teeth. If you are looking at the possibility of wearing dentures but choose All-on-FourTM dental implants, you will never have to experience the crippling effects of loose dentures, being unable to eat the foods you enjoy, messy adhesives, removing teeth at night, the embarrassment of dentures slipping during speech or smiling or the bad breath associated with wearing dentures.

Here are some facts and trends to consider. More than 20 million people in the US are missing all of their natural teeth. More than 100 million people are missing from 11-15 teeth. Maintaining good, healthy teeth is certainly a worthy goal but keeping teeth for a lifetime is not always possible, despite the impressive achievement of preventative dentistry and the best efforts of our patients. Trauma, systemic disease, dental decay, periodontal disease, poor genetics, dental phobia, and normal wear and tear are just few of the reasons for tooth loss. Almost 80 percent of consumers with missing teeth are now aware of dental implants and realize the advantage of a permanent solution that mimics nature in function and fit and looks even better than nature may have originally provided. It is now possible to treat virtually every edentulous patient with aesthetic and functionally fixed no dentures solutions. We work with patients missing as few as one tooth or as many as all of their teeth.

According to Dr. Atcha “My patients appreciate being able to extend our relationship to a wide variety of treatment procedures instead of being referred out to a different office”, As a leader in the field of implant dentistry, Dr. Atcha has the experience that matters, the credentials that count. He has surgically placed and restored 1000s of dental implant procedures and has published several articles on dental implants in the field. “The key elements that allow patients to seek our office out are communication, relationship building & education” says Dr. Atcha. I like to personally build relationships with each and every patient and educate them about their options and spend time with them one on one by giving them a comprehensive snapshot of their clinical situation and discussing short-and long term objective. “Educated patients make the best healthcare decisions for themselves”, according to Atcha. With a hard-working and a dedicated staff that treats our patients with so much care and service, we have many people who want to be our patients. A huge part of my role in my practice is educating patients about tooth loss and its impact on quality of life, says Dr. Atcha. We have before and after pictures of hundreds of patients we have treated and success stories of our patients we can share with our new patients to build trust and confidence that there are others like them. Our happy patients are very open and would love to share their experience as to how satisfied they are with the care and the service we .y have provided them. They can also be found on www.youtube.com/drirfanatchadds

In our office Dr. Atcha focuses on giving his patients options with either a few implants or a full fixed restorations as a cost-effective way to treat patients with failing or missing teeth. With the revolutionary All-On-4™ dental implants Dr. Atcha uses 4 specially placed implants per jaw to secure dental implant teeth without bone grafting even when failing teeth have to be removed. the All-on-FourTM dental implant technique is a clinically proven solution for those who have lost or are about to lose all of their upper and/or

When you think of fun, you likely think of popcorn. This tasty treat accompanies times of recreation, like movies and gatherings, and yes, especially the holidays. Stringing popcorn to make a garland became popular in the early 20th century when Americans still decorated their trees with homemade ornaments.

I

t was tradition to use apples, nuts, popcorn which was dyed in a variety of colors and strung along with cranberries. Still today, many families get out the needle and thread and painstakingly try to thread individual pieces of popcorn into a garland—and we say painstakingly not because it is difficult to do, but because it is difficult to do without eating all of the popcorn! To string your own popcorn garland, here are a few ideas and tips. First, make sure you use day-old unbuttered popcorn—it is less brittle and crisp than fresh popcorn and more pliable, or stale. The needle and thread are

here are plenty of gifts that would make ideal additions to the man cave this holiday season. A man cave needs to be decked out with appropriate furniture, like a recliner, home theater seating, a home bar and bar stools, and pub tables. A card table for poker or games is also a good choice. When it comes to beverages, the popular kegerator is an ideal gift and many appliance stores stock a number of different models these days, or some men choose to use a mini-fridge instead. For gaming and recreation in the man cave, a holiday gift might include a pool table, ping-pong table, dart board, pin ball machine, upright arcade game, foos ball table, air hockey table, or beer pong table. our social calendar is packed to the brim with dinner parties, family activities and holiday festivities with loved ones. Whether you are hosting or attending as a guest, providing something delectable will always be a welcome addition to the celebration. Loved around the world, a scrumptious cheese platter is guaranteed to tempt everyone’s palate and be the perfect conversation starter. Creating a delicious and interesting cheese platter is easier than you think if you make use of a few tips and tricks trusted by expert chefs. These four ideas will ensure your platter not only embodies the perfect array of cheeses but also showcases your personal taste and style. 22 | HOLIDAY THREE | DECEMBER 3, 2014

THE RIGHT VARIETIES AND CORRECT AMOUNTS

Confused about how many varieties of cheese to buy? And how much is needed for your size gathering? The goal is to give people a nice selection of cheeses to sample without overwhelming them; three to five cheeses typically will do the trick. A simple way to ensure a nice spread is to make selections based on the type of milk used to create the cheeses. For example, cow, sheep and goat’s milk all create very different kinds of cheeses, and knowing about these differences can help you make better choices when shopping. Prepare 4-6 ounces per person if cheese is the main food, and serve more or less depending on the time of day, whether other foods are served and the type of celebration. When in doubt, reference this handy online cheese calculator at dcicheeseco. com/party.

ADD AN AGEDCHEDDAR FLIGHT

Good to Go by Lucrezia boasts high-quality imports, from olive oils to meats, wines to vinegars—but during holiday gatherings, their cheeses take center stage. The store offers many varieties of imported cheese, including Boar’s Head brand. Sample these delicious wares to create a stellar cheese plate at the indoor market on Sampling Saturdays, when Good to Go by Lucrezia’s Cheese Chicks offer samples of cheeses, jams, crackers and artisan meats. Their selections of gift baskets are perfect for any foodie on your list, and include perfectly packages wines, vinegars and other delicious artisan items.

Do you love cheddar? You’re not alone, as it’s one of the most universally enjoyed cheese varieties. That’s why a flight of different cheddar cheeses is sure to capture your guests’ attention while satisfying their hunger pangs. Try selecting three different cheddars for people to taste — odd numbers always present well on a plate. Black Creek’s premium cheddar cheeses made in Wisconsin are aged for nine months,

two years or even three years, and they feature a rich, sharp flavor. Pre-cut the cheese into cubes and place the pieces on the platter, or you can allow guests to cut their own. Educate guests by adorning each cheese with a candle featuring the number of years that the cheese is aged.

CREATE A WORLDLY THEME

Want a crowd-pleasing theme for your cheese plate? Create a “Tour of Europe” platter that will delight taste buds while letting guests try different cheese styles. Start with mild flavors, including French cheeses like brie and camembert that offer a soft texture. Next, guests can visit Italy when they sample Stella Italianstyle cheeses like full-flavored parmesan or rich, semi-sweet asiago. Finish with flavorful cheeses from Holland and Denmark, like extra-aged Gouda or nutty Edam. Add flags to your cheese offerings denoting each one’s nationality for the perfect finishing touch.

he kids are off of school for, how long? A gabillion days on end? So holiday vacation doesn’t feel like forever, make sure you have plenty planned to keep your kids busy and prevent them from getting bored. Engage kids in holiday crafts to not only encourage activity, but also produce some original one-of-a-kind holiday gifts in the process. Here are a few ideas.

SNOWMAN DECORATION

Take a small terra cotta flower pot and paint the entire outside surface white including the bottom. Turn upside down and paint a snowman face on the front of the pot with black paint and an orange triangle for a nose. Glue two large red pompoms on each side and connect with a pipe cleaner arching over the top to make earmuffs. Paint the bottom band of the pot in colorful patterns to simulate a neck scarf.

DEAR SANTA, My owner might not realize it, because sometimes I growl or bark, but I really do like to dress up, and this year I am hoping that you can bring me some festive holiday clothes. A bandana with some candy canes on it would be stylish and set me apart from the other canines out on a walk in the snow, and if you really could help keep me warm, some winter booties for my paws would be nice—they get so chilly and can even get cracked and hurt out on the ice! But I want to look dapper all year round, so would you please bring me a customized dog collar? My current one is so last year’s model and I would really like to look sharp for the poodles. Thank you, and also, make sure to leave me a rawhide treat and I promise to leave your cookies and milk alone. Your best friend, Fido

COOK WITH FAMILY TO

stress HEATHER AUGUSTYN

The Christmas feast is a large feat for one person to take on – especially if your guest list seems to grow by the minute. There’s the appetizers, the main course, desserts, drinks and decorations.

O

h, and don’t forget the cleanup. Not even super-mom or super-dad can handle all of the above without a heavy helping of stress on what is meant to be an enjoyable, reflective holiday.

ASK FOR HELP

There is no shame in enlisting the help of your friends and family members in the cooking process. In fact, it may make them feel more invested into the process and leave them more appreciative of the finished product. Ask guests to bring something to take some of the menu-planning burden off your shoulders. If any of

LOCAL RESTAURANTS COOK UP HOLIDAY TRADITIONS Envision serving your guests garlic rolls fresh from the oven and brushed with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese, oregano and garlic followed by turkey and gravy and for dessert, cannoli, an Italian classic of delicate tube shaped shells stuffed with a sweetened ricotta cheese filling. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? But so much work. So why not cheat a little—after all your guests won’t complain. Plus this gives you and those family and friends who love to cook, a chance to create other specialties for holiday dinners. “Our garlic rolls are very delicious,” says Mary LoDuca, owner of Giovanni’s Restaurant in Munster. They’re baked fresh in house every day and they’re very popular.” At Giovanni’s, these garlic rolls, which have Giovanni’ been on the menu since the restaurant s Garlic Ro first opened 48 years ago, are served lls at the table along with garlic, olive oil and Parmesan cheese. And for those order the rolls—which are sold by the dozen—to go, Giovanni’s also offers those three ingredients for purchase as well. Ciao Bella has put a holiday spin on the Italian favorite dessert — pumpkin cannoli. “We sell both the full size and mini cannoli which are made from an old family recipe,” says Stephanie Cevallos at Ciao Bella in Schererville. “People can order them and pick them up and we also cater.”

your guests celebrate Hanukkah, ask them to bring some potato latkes or matzoh ball soup from an old family recipe to make it a multi-cultural meal. Also, have your spouse or neighbor help with preparation on the morning of your big meal. It’s amazing how having someone peel a few carrots or dress the turkey can help reduce your stress level.

INVOLVING CHILDREN: MAKE IT A GAME

Cooking can be a great forum for teaching young children about measurements, counting and food safety. It can also foster quality bonding time between parents and kids that is crucial to overall family happiness. Teach your chefs-in-training the difference between a broil and a boil, and a teaspoon and a tablespoon. Then quiz them later in the cooking process to see if they are retaining your expert instruction.

OK, so you are more of a kitchen dictator who doesn’t like to give up any control. That’s fine, too. Your biggest aid this year will be a planning checklist that helps keep you on task and budget. Break down your checklist into segments to give yourself timelines starting about one month away from Christmas. Your first list should be focused on figuring out who to invite and what they will bring to your party. ‘Tis the season for holiday entertaining. Icy shades of glistening white, sophisticated naturals and dazzling rhinestones top the hottest design trends in tableware and collectibles for the 2014 winter holidays.

hades of white continue to be a customer favorite, both in ornaments and tabletop,” says visual designer John Griffith. “For the past few years, holiday decor has hinted at glitz and glitter, but this season we’re seeing more of a jeweled look with glamorous winter white designs heavily encrusted with rhinestones. It reminds me of when you wake up after a winter storm and everything is coated in sparking snow and ice.” Griffith leads the design team at dinnerware retailer giant, Replacements, Ltd. He loves mixing patterns in shades of white to create an elegant monochromatic look, but adds that using white as a unifying element also allows one to create endless design combinations by blending in additional colors, textures and shapes. Teammate Keith Winkler says you can easily use a different salad plate for each guest to create fun individual place settings, or even switch out accent plates between holidays to give your tabletop decor a totally different twist. “For someone who entertains often, this is a great way to break up patterns so their guests don’t always see the same designs over and over. Guests will enjoy the seasonal designs, and hosts will have all kinds of fun creating new looks for their table,” Winkler says. Bright colors are also trending as hosts break tradition by adding in splashes of bold hues that aren’t typically associated with the holidays. “In creating one of the table designs in our store, we mixed non-holiday patterns in shades of purple and metallic gold,” says Griffith. “These colors don’t readily suggest Christmas, but we were able to

Showcase your holiday foods from appetizers to desserts with the perfect dinner service and platters. “We have wonderful dish and glassware from $2 and up,” says Cindy Winter, owner of Treasures Found, an antique and collectibles store in Lowell as she impacts boxes filled with Rosenthal Bavarian China with service for 12 and Old Ivory Syracuse serving eight. “We also sell mixed and matched pieces which people are really going towards now.” The list of treasures is seeming endless here as Winter describes a complete service for 12 of Lennox Essex with matching glassware (though that is sold separately), Havilland platters with lips and Depression glass. “There’s just so much you can do with all of this for holiday entertaining,” says Winter.

We filled glass bowls and compotes with richhued ornaments and incorporated gold finials in the table design. We created a centerpiece of silk florals in complementary colors which pulled the design theme together. again this year for both tabletop and holiday ornaments. Designs range from whimsical and folksy to more sophisticated and contemporary. Burlap offers great texture this season with manufacturers incorporating this material into everything from wire decorating ribbon to holiday accents. Griffith suggests using burlap for table runners or place mats and venturing outside to gather greenery such as ivy or magnolia leaves, berries and pine cones to use for your centerpiece. Vintage tableware continues to be a driving trend. Griffith says many people are including heirloom patterns, passed through the generations, in their holiday place settings to create a sense of family

o we talked to a few local experts on the gifts that will be hottest this holiday season for teenagers. Hoodies and gift cards for music are always a hit, year after year. So too are a good pair of headphones since teenagers spend a lot of time listening to their tunes and they rarely have the cash to splurge on quality headphones that don’t have to be cranked up to eardrumshattering volumes to be heard well. Of course the electronic devices to go along with those headphones, such as phones and tablets, are also in high demand. Christine Martinez, social media

They are all about positive energy and they make a personal gift because the charms that dangle from the bangle all have different meanings. There are initials, birthstones, and for Christmas we think this will be a big seller,” says Martinez. This year decorating for the holidays doesn’t have to entail climbing on ladders in gusts of wind and snow to string holiday lights says Kerri Miller, marketing at Philips Ace Hardware in Valparaiso. Indoor decorations can make for quirky and unique table décor. Other fun holiday touches include snowmen-shaped table accessories, such as napkin holders, bird feeders, old world hand blown glass ornaments and festive candelabras. For a spot of live color, Philips also carries orchids and Amaryllis, those wonderful flowers planted just in time to bloom for the holidays. “As you can see,” says Miller, “we look at the amusing side of the holidays too when it comes to decorating.”

And you can help liven up the countdown by putting your own spin on the advent calendar with a few simple items around the house. Gather and fill 25 containers or bags with holiday treats (no peeking). Then cover them with holiday designs or decorations and number them 1 through 25. Stack them up or put them in a line, and let the countdown begin.

TABLE DECORATIONS

If you’re planning a big holiday bash – whether formal or informal – the table can be your greatest playground for decorative creativity. You can easily transform your dinner party into an elegant dining experience by setting out fancy silverware and plates, designed with a holiday theme, of course. Scatter ornaments and glitter throughout the middle of the table to create a magical backdrop for a fourcourse dinner. Or layer the table in various holiday-themed craft paper for a more child-friendly version of the sitdown party.

ADD A TOUCH OF NATURE TO YOUR DIY DECOR

Allen’s Lanscape Centre stocks many pinecones, both plain and frosted, that are great for DIY holiday projects.

HOLIDAY CRAFTING PARTY

If you’re looking to turn your DIY ornament-making into a fun-filled event, why not make it a party? Set up a few tables with glue, scissors, ribbon, Popsicle sticks and different-colored paper, and invite over your friends with small children. The fun part will be seeing what they come up with as their holiday craft. Send your guests home with their creation, a festive bag of candy and a special holiday present, and you’ll be the talk of the town.

“Wreaths are one of the primary holiday decorations people use,” says Julie Severa, Assistant Garden Center Manager at Allen Landscape Centre in Highland. “They can be used on doors, chimneys, light poles, walls or any other space.” For the Do-It-Yourselfers, Allen’s offers wreaths in a variety of choices in style such as firs like Balsam, Fraser and Noble as well as Boxwood and sizes 18-inches and up. They then can be decorated with your favorite ornaments and seasonal accents. Garlands, swagged over front doors, swirled around lamp posts and draped around windows and stair railings, also Allen’s has greenery pots, which are provide a wonderful perfect for just a small touch of nature winter accent. indoors. “When it comes to decorating outdoors, get the decorations up as early as you can because once the cold weather arrives, you won’t want to be decorating outdoors,” suggests Severa. “Once it’s done, you can go inside and focus on getting the indoor decorations up. No matter what type of space you have to decorate, think of Allen’s as your go-to holiday decorating headquarters.”

innamon has been used to accent food since the days of Ancient Rome and in the Middle Ages it was even considered a status symbol of the elite. Those people who could afford the spice used it in meals for flavor and to impress those around them with their ability to purchase a condiment from the ‘exotic’ East.” This spice, made from the bark of a tree, is not as rare as it was in eras of the past, but it is still used in times of celebration. Jean Thiele, owner of Branya’s Bakery in St. John, says that cinnamon is popular all times of year including at holiday time. “I think we love the fact that cinnamon is homey and a lot of us associate it with apple pie and pumpkin pie and it’s a fall and winter flavor that you gotta have!” At Branya’s Bakery, Thiele uses plenty of cinnamon in her pastry recipes. She says, “Our cinnamon rolls are made with yeast dough and we layer them with butter and cinnamon and roll them. Our cinnamon crispies are made with our cinnamon rolls—we
