Harmonies by Harbor Lights Doo-wop group set to perform at Theatre at the Center

A

selection of favorite doowop tunes will be dusted off and delivered in concert this weekend when vocal group Harbor Lights takes the stage in Munster. Harbor Lights, specializing in a cappella sounds, is set to perform Saturday and Sunday at Munster’s Theatre at the Center. “We’re quite excited

NW I .CO M /G O

about these shows,” said George Carl, member of Harbor Lights and the group’s manager. “This will be our third time performing at the center.” Carl said the intimate environment of Theatre at the Center is a good fit for the group. While Carl estimates the group’s largest audience base is an older crowd, many grandparents are introducing their

grandkids to the music of yesteryear. “We’re seeing a lot of younger fans and new faces,” he said. There are also a great deal of repeat patrons at their shows who simply love that style of music. Those fans, he said, often “sing the words along with us.” Harbor Lights’ playlist stars a variety of favorites including tunes such as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” Under the Boardwalk,” “In the Still of Night,” “Sh-Boom,” “Book of Love,” “Sunday Kind of Love,” and others. The group’s members, including Carl, Dave Mitchell, Cheryl De Rosier, Fernando Rodriguez and Jim Calinski, are dedicated to keeping the stellar a cappella songs alive. They perform

creative arrangements of the tunes and regularly rotate songs on the performance roster. “We try to change it up because every venue is different. Whether we’re performing at a festival or a theater, we try to adjust the music.” Carl believes the public keeps coming back to their shows simply because of the beloved tunes. “I believe in my heart that it has to do with these great songs,” he said. “Many of the songs we sing were done by writers in the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. And everyone can relate to them (and the emotions in them),” he said. The group, who records on Collectables records, has recorded three albums. Carl said he and his fellow group members get along well. “We’d like to keep performing for as long as we can,” he said. “We’re relaxed and have fun on stage.” Harbor Lights keeps a busy touring schedule locally and around the Midwest. “We’re already booked into 2014,” Carl said, noting 2013 has been their best year ever. In addition to this weekend’s shows in Munster, watch for Harbor Lights Christmas show scheduled for Nov. 23 at Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso. Gallery: Bands inspired by costumes There have been many bands throughout the years that have been inspired by certain costumes. Kiss’ iconic makeup and costumes started the trend. Insane Clown Posse brought the fear of clowns into their music by having white clown faces for every show. Some modern bands that were inspired are Daft Punk and Dead Mau5. Their costumes have evolved to include light and electronics that coordinate to their shows. Go to NWI.com to view the rest of the photos.

Elvria, Mistress of the Dark, says she’s still shocked by her success after more than 30 years of frightening fun. waist sexy gowns? Cassandra: For many years I was a strict vegetarian. Today, I’m still very careful about my diet, and lean toward mostly fruits and vegetables, with some meat. I also like walking and always workout 30 minutes a day. After I had my daughter Sadie in 1991, it was difficult to get that tiny waist back, but I’ve managed it and maintained over the years. When I moved up to Santa Barbara, it was for Sadie to finish her school, and I also had lots of time to exercise. But I was so bored. We were both ready to get back to LA. Phil: Elvira, your classic, vampy image has become instantly recognizable around the world as a favorite media and marketing image. During the past 30 years, have you changed anything about your trademark look? Elvira: Only my hair honey. As I grew in popularity, so did my hair. It seemed to keep getting higher and higher, especially by the end of the 1980s decade. Now, it’s not quite as tall and back under control. It’s the only part of me under control. Happy Halloween to you Phil and to all your readers!

n July 2008, Chicago scary movie TV host Son of Svengoolie aka actor Rich Koz came faceto-face with his funny, fellow graveyard shift personality and West Coast TV host counterpart, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, when the two shared the stage for an event for fans in Rosemont, Ill. Tonight, Koz, in his Svengoolie character garb, is in Merrillville at Star Plaza Theatre to share the stage with Maestro Kirk Muspratt for the 7:30 p.m. Halloween Holiday Pops Concert with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra . Koz and Elvira’s dual identity, actress Cassandra Peterson, are both 62 and both launched their TV gigs and characters at the same time in their careers in 1980. While fans can catch up with Koz as Svengoolie at tonight’s concert for some scary musical fun, we thought we’d do some catching up with the Queen of Screams Elvira and her dual identity Peterson chatting with her by phone from her home in Los Angeles. Phil: A little bat told me you have an extra reason to celebrate with added congratulations for Halloween 2013. Elvira: Yes! I have my own line of Elvira costumes and Halloween accessories and Elvira is the No. 1 female costume pick. I’m also busy doing my own live Halloween stage show at California’s Knott’s Berry Farm amusement park with shows right up until Halloween. Phil: Ever think of retiring? Elvira: No, not at all. That sounds way too scary. I actually thought I wanted to retire a few years ago, and I sold my home in LA and moved to Santa Barbara for three years. But I missed working so much, I moved right back to Los Angeles, and I’m happy to be back. Phil: This next question is for Cassandra, since you are the woman we have to thank for bringing Elvira back from the dead with a revived and busy career. How do you stay so fantastically fit and shapely for Elvira’s famous wardrobe of tiny

Another drug deal gone really bad The Counselor is released nationwide on Friday

he anticipation surrounding “The Counselor” has been cooking for almost two years—the project started as a screenplay by novelist and screenwriter savant Cormac McCarthy sold in January 2012— because it has everything going for it. At least, everything that “No Country for Old Men,” had, and that includes: the Cormac McCarthy story and Director Ridley Scott. Also the star of NCFOM Javier Bardem, this time paired with other stars including Penélope Cruz, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, John Leguizamo, Rosie Perez and Michael Fassbender. The movie was shot in London in summer of 2012 though it will open in the U.S. first this weekend. (There was a special screening in London in mid-October, but “The Counselor” will not get to UK theaters until mid-November.)

The Drama The production of the movie did not lack drama either. The most tragic was the suicide of Ridley Scott’s younger brother Tony who jumped off a bridge in California last year and interrupted the filmmaking for a time. More happily, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem had a second child in July, a daughter, Luna. (You can piece together on the web that Cruz and Bardem met in 2007 when they played husband and wife on the set of Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”—she was great as the crazy beautiful wife—and married in 2010. The couple’s son Leo was born in L.A. in 2011 and their daughter in Madrid, Cruz’s hometown.

Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, director Ridley Scott and actor Michael Fassbender pose for photographers during the UK Photocall of ‘The Counselor’ at the Dorchester Hotel in London.

The Plot Somewhere in the southwestern United States a respectable attorney played by Michael Fassbender thinks he can dabble in the drug trade without getting down into the bloody, muddy low road, but realizes too late that he is in way over his head. There are red flags along the way: Brad Pitt, in a role he has played before—most recently with the late James Gandofilini in “Killing Them Softly”—seems to know way more than he’s saying. Javier Bardem has never looked scarier or more sinister and Cameron Diaz is seductive as ever, even as the carnage she triggers overshadows the plot for the beginning. Cruz plays the unbenign girlfriend of the slow-witted and anxiety-ridden attorney.

Javier Bardem in “The Counselor” opening around the country October 25th. Will “The Counselor” be a hit? How can it miss? Everyone involved has been down this road before and has the Oscars to show for it. The only obstacle this movie has to overcome is living up to its predecessors’ success.

What The Counselor • Director: Ridley Scott • Cast:

Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, John Leguizamo, Cameron Diaz and Rosie Perez. • Rated: R • Time: 1 hour and 51 minutes • What You Can Expect: Drama, thrills, sensational beauty, slaughter and amorality.

Ulises Gomez showcases a few specialties at Tapas Cafe in Merrillville. TONY V. MARTIN, THE TIMES

Relish the flavors of Spain at Tapas 16

GO! / THE TIMES MEDIA CO. / 10.24.2013

taste of Spain awaits diners at Tapas Cafe in Merrillville. The restaurant, established in spring 2012 by Ulises and Rosalba Gomez, offers a diverse selection of hot and cold tapas, creative entrees and paella, Spain’s traditional rice dish. Prior to entering the eatery, diners view a large sign emblazoned above the entrance to Tapas Cafe proclaiming the dining experience features “Serious Spaniard Cuisine.” And as Ulises Gomez, who mans the kitchen in the role of chef explains it, his focus is to serve “modern” Spanish fare using traditional ingredients and techniques. “We use traditional ingredients but reinvent them to create new tapas, and new flavors,” said Gomez. “And I want to bring diners a gourmet touch at an affordable price.” The quaint restaurant has a laidback charm with an open kitchen and dim lighting. During a recent visit, our server, who happened to be chef Gomez’ wife Rosalba proved a delightful hostess explaining the dishes and even recommending favorite items. Rosalba also serves as the restaurant’s manager. Tapas, which are small plates, are the perfect choice for sharing a meal with friends. At Tapas Cafe, the menu boasts a nice variety and also stars an assortment of seafood and meat entrees along with chicken, seafood and vegetable paellas. A native of Mexico City, Gomez said he’s long been a fan of tapas and has enjoyed the fun, flavorful cuisine at various Spanish-themed restaurants. The chef honed his culinary talents working at restaurants in Chicago, Northwest Indiana, and Seafood Paella

Indianapolis. “I learned to cook just by experience and by working at restaurants,” Gomez said. Why tapas as the showcase for his eatery? “There’s nothing like this in the area,” he said, adding that he’s included a unique touch in his dishes. “Tapas is a classic European style (of cuisine),” he said, “but I’m definitely doing something different with it.” Among the cold tapas offerings are Bacon-Wrapped Scallops ($13); Shrimp and Diablo, ($9), which is grilled shrimp topped with spicy garlic Chipotle pepper sauce; Meatballs Albondigas ($7), which are meatballs served over rice and served with a Spanish tomato sauce; and Patatas Bravas ($6), a spicy potato dish with a creamy sauce. Gomez said the paellas are big sellers at the restaurant. Tapas Cafe also features entrees such as Mango Pineapple Chicken Curry ($13); Salmon Saffron ($15); and Aztek Chocolate Chicken ($13). A few Mexican-inspired items are available, including nachos and quesadillas. Sandwiches served on pita bread are also featured. During our visit, we indulged in the Patatas Bravas; Mexico City Style Ceviche, ($9) which starred a combination of seafood in a spicy sauce with a mound of avocado on top; and the Chicken Paella, which also included a mix of vegetables and peppers. The filling but flavorful meal was completed on a sweet note with a unique flan Napolitano, a delicious flan cheesecake. If you’re looking for an out-of-theordinary dining experience, take a little culinary journey with friends at Tapas Cafe. FYI: Tapas Cafe is located at 2486 Lincoln Highway, Merrillville. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays. Phone: (219) 769-7008

selection of favorite doowop tunes will be dusted off and delivered in concert this weekend when vocal group Harbor Lights takes the stage in Munster. Harbor Lights, specializing in a cappella sounds, is set to perform Saturday and Sunday at Munster’s Theatre at the Center. “We’re quite excited

about these shows,” said George Carl, member of Harbor Lights and the group’s manager.

How do you stay so fantastically fit and shapely for Elvira’s famous wardrobe of tiny

opes for a World Series in Chicago this year were snuffed out early in the season by the Cubs and White Sox, but Horseshoe Casino came through in the clutch with a “world series” of its own that makes Hammond the center of attention in professional poker this weekend. Horseshoe is playing host to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Circuit Tour, a 12-day spectacular that began on October 17 and will continue through the weekend, headlined on Monday (Oct. 28) by the $2 million No-Limit Hold’em Main Event Final Table. Even if you’re not a participant, this is every poker fan’s chance to do some “star gazing” at the players they’ve seen on TV, provided of course you’ll be able to recognize some of them behind the hoodies and dark glasses.
