ummer is just around the corner, and communities across Chicagoland are gearing up for annual events that will draw thousands to the region. Here are six highly anticipated events that are expected to be hits this summer, and are ones you won’t want to miss.

isit any casino in Northwest Indiana or the Chicago-area and the evidence is clear: Slot machines, both the traditional reel variety and the new wave of multi-line video games, dominate the gaming inventory. Slot machines are the “cash cows” of the casino industry. All of the marketing energy, direct mail solicitations, and product research and development revolve around them. Since state-sanctioned casino gambling came to the Midwest, table games have dwindled noticeably while slot inventories continue to grow. It’s a no-brainer for the casino owners and operators. People love the lure of chasing jackpots, even though the odds of catching a big one can be in the hundreds of thousands to one or higher against you. Only blackjack requires skill to play correctly and reduce the house edge as low as possible. All table games have a built-in house advantage that guarantees a profit from players as a collective group. The difference between the revenues generated by slots as opposed to table games is sheer volume. So much more money is wagered on the slots more frequently and at such a greater pace that they are bound to be the main bread winners. The entertainment value and interactive features of video slot machines are truly remarkable. They’re fun to play, but they have an addictive quality to them that requires players to be on guard when it comes to fully enjoying their recreational casino outings. In order to protect yourself against slot fever, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the table game options available at the casinos. Table games are played at a much more comfortable pace, giving both you and your money a rest. Learning to play them can enhance your casino experience so that you don’t become a slave to the slots. The actual mathematical advantage that the casinos enjoy at the table games is much lower than the revenues they generate. Reckless and

uneducated play contributes to this fact. For example, many people who sit down at a blackjack table really don’t know how to play the game correctly. Many people who play craps spend inordinate amounts of money on the bets that pack that highest house edge. Casinos thrive on such players. Playing the tables is completely different than playing the slots. At the tables you interact with other people. The important thing is not to be intimidated. Take the time to learn them and to play correctly and you’ll be a wellrounded, informed gambler who will be able to be the master of your own gambling destiny.

obby Vinton chuckles about some of the big name comedians who used to be his opening act during his headlining days in the 1970s and 1980s at the casinos in Las Vegas. “Joan Rivers and Milton Berle were two of the names who would be paired up with me on the same marquee billing, but I don’t think they always liked having to work with me and those same audiences night after night,” said Vinton, talking by telephone last Friday from his home near Sarasota, Fla. “During those days, I’d have more than 200 girls show up and they’d all be members of my fan club. And these same fans were showing up night after night to hear me perform, which wasn’t so great for comedians who used the same jokes each night. I remember one night, Joan saying: ‘Not the same @3#$!*^ people again tonight!’ and I just laughed.” Vinton, who just turned 79 on April 16, still enjoys the fan appreciation he receives entertaining a casino crowd. Known for his classic hits “Blue Velvet,” “Roses Are Red,” “Mr. Lonely,” “Melody of Love” and many more, Vinton is returning to Northwest Indiana to perform one exclusive concert at 8 pm Saturday, June 7 in the Stardust Event Center at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa in

Michigan City, the same space where he last performed to sold-out audiences in October 2012. “I don’t do many dates anymore, and I consider myself lucky I can pick and choose where I want to go,” said Vinton, who was last in the Chicagoland area to do two concerts on Valentine’s Day, Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at the beautiful Paramount Theatre in Aurora, Ill., next to Hollywood Casino. “In fact, I no longer even employ a manager, agent or even a publicist. My son Robby, who also performs with me on stage, is my road manager and booking agent and my other son Chris is my publicity guy. My daughter Hannah, who will be touring with me when I come to Michigan City, sings back-up for me. Now, when I do agree to perform, I treat it like a vacation. I get to travel in style with theaters sending limos, they put me up in hotel suites and I still get paid to do what I love so much.” Vinton also still laughs when he thinks about the many comedy greats he invited to appear on his hit television variety show that ran from 1975 to 1978. “The Bobby Vinton Show” showcased the talents of everyone from Foster Brooks, John Byner and Arte Johnson to Charlie Callas, Phyllis Diller and Henny Youngman, in addition to the popular musical entertainers of the day, Ethel

Endoscopic ultrasound is easier on patients

he recent advent of endoscopic ultrasound procedures at Franciscan Alliance Northern Indiana Region hospitals offers another example of why patients need not travel outside of the area to receive the best available treatment. The outpatient procedure, which provides for more efficient diagnoses and is less invasive and relatively pain-free, recently became available at Franciscan St. Margaret Health-Dyer and Hammond and at Franciscan Point, which is under the auspices of Franciscan St. Anthony Health-Crown Point. A scope attached to the end of a probe photographs areas using sound waves and “can take pictures in parts of the body that can’t be done with regular ultrasound and get samples of the area being examined through a needle that passes through the scope,” said Julia LeBlanc, M.D.-gastroenterology, who does the procedure at Franciscan Point. It provides a real-time view to study the upper and lower digestive and respiratory tracts to stage lung, esophageal, pancreatic, bile duct, rectal and gastric cancer, as well as to check tumors of the upper gastrointestinal tract and to locate gall stone disease. The device also allows physicians to take biopsies (with a needle) without having to perform surgery, as was the case in the past. It also can be used to destroy certain pancreatic cysts and prevent possible cancer growth, through the injection of alcohol

and other medicine. “We are able to see how thick and deep a tumor is and if it has spread, which allows the specialist to know how to best treat it. It is the standard of care for esophageal and rectal cancer and is being used routinely in pancreatic cancer care,” Dr. LeBlanc said. Naveen Nallapareddy, M.D.gastroenterology at Franciscan St. Margaret Health, said the tool adds “more specific imaging to structures being examined than a CAT scan and is done without incisions.” “The results determine whether a patient needs surgery, or what the next treatment step should be. It is a followup procedure to regular endoscopes, colonoscopies and ultrasounds. It allows for faster treatment time and can be managed on an outpatient basis,” he said. Before endoscopic ultrasound was available locally, patients had to travel to Chicago or Indianapolis, Dr. Nallapareddy pointed out, adding, “We’re able to provide the highest quality of care, right here.” Dr. LeBlanc agreed. “This tool changes how we practice medicine – it shows how we can use technology to make for a positive impact on patients and improve their overall health.” She said it also makes physicians’ jobs easier because, “the more information we have going in, the more we can help the patient – and everyone is happier in the end.”

back then,” said Vinton, “In fact, I even sent it to him and his producers to see if they wanted to use it for a spot on ‘The Tonight Show.’ But he wasn’t interested, even though he loves to surprise other guests with old clips and footage.” Something else fans won’t see

“anytime soon” are DVDs of Vinton’s television show, which was filmed in Canada and produced by Chuck Barris. “Because we featured so many musical guests and we don’t have the rights to show clips of them singing these hit songs, it would cost a fortune to secure rights,” Vinton said. “The Polish Prince” also performed sold-out shows at Drury Lane Oakbrook in April 2011, bringing his wife Dolly, son and daughters along for the fun. Named one of “the most successful love singers of the rock era” by Billboard Magazine, Vinton has established himself as one of America’s most versatile entertainers. Vinton has sold more than 75 million records, and has had more than a dozen gold records and albums during his long career, which began when he was signed to Epic Records in 1960. His big break came in 1962 with “Roses are Red,” which spent 4 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. From 1962 through 1972, he had more Billboard number one hits than any other male vocalist, including Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. In 1963, Vinton hit No. 3 on the charts with “Blue on Blue,” and then topped the charts with “Blue Velvet,” and “There, I’ve Said It Again.” The following year Vinton recorded “Mr. Lonely,” which also reached No. 1, earning him more hit records than any other male recording artist in the 1960s. Today, he admits he still misses his Blue Velvet Theatre in Branson, Missouri where he performed for 10 years before deciding to sell it in 2002. However, he doesn’t miss the grueling

performance schedule that attracted so many tourists. And though semi-retired, he doesn’t count watching television as one of his hobbies. “I can’t name any certain shows that I like to watch, and that’s because I don’t think there’s anything all that great to watch on TV despite all of the channels to pick from,” he said. “I’d much rather watch the news channels all day to know what’s happening around me and around the world.” Vinton’s birthplace of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, is also the birthplace of one of his mentors, the late, great Perry Como, who died in 2001 at age 88. While he was happy to have his hometown name two streets after him, Bobby Vinton Boulevard and the shorter adjoining Bobby Vinton Drive, in his honor, he wasn’t so keen about having a bronze statue erected in his honor. City officials had plans to erect a statue in Vinton’s honor, but Vinton himself vetoed the idea, noting that the $100,000 planned cost could go to far more important town needs. The Bobby Vinton Show at Stardust Event Center at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa in Michigan City • WHEN: 8 pm Saturday, June 7 • HOW MUCH: Tickets are $30, $40 and $60, and can be purchased by credit card at Ticketmaster.com or in person at The Gift Box in the Blue Chip Casino pavilion. The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from the past, “X-Men: First Class,” in order to change a major historical event and fight an epic battle that could save our future. Director Bryan Singer reinvented the comic book genre as we’ve come to know it. With the debut of the hugely successful “X-Men” in the summer of 2000, Singer established nothing less than a new creative aesthetic in his motion picture adaptation of the beloved comics stories and characters. That film was followed by Singer’s even more successful “X2” in 2003.

But in order to enjoy high heels, adult conversation and food not served in a paper bag, they need their husbands to watch the kids for three hours— what could go wrong? Starring Patricia Heaton and Sarah Drew, along with Sean Astin and Trace Adkins, this movie is a comedic look at real life problems.

With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. n June 4, 1944, the German sub known as U-505 was captured off the coast of West Africa. Tracking and disabling this elusive U-boat not only protected vital supply lines, but the swift and courageous action taken to save and secure the sub yielded vital secrets that would change the course of World War II. To mark the 70th anniversary of this remarkable chapter in naval history, MSI is proud to present special events to provide even more insight into the U-505 capture and legacy.

SATURDAY, JUNE 7: SEARCHING AND EXPLORING THE U-550 Speaker: Joe Mazraani, Shipwreck Diver and Captain of D/V Tenacious 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Little Theater For nearly two decades, Joe Mazraani was a part of a team that feverishly researched and dreamed of exploring the elusive U-550. On July 23, 2012, near the end of a grueling roundthe-clock side scan operation, the final resting place of the Grey Wolf was located in approximately 100 meters of North Atlantic water off the coast of Massachusetts. Join us for a special presentation by Joe Mazraani detailing the search and exploration experience of the U-550. [Seating is limited and first-come, first-served.]

JUNE 4 (70TH ANNIVERSARY) AND JUNE 7-8 Times throughout the day in the U-505 Submarine exhibit The U-505 Submarine exhibit’s interactive Dive Trainer will be open for a hands-on lesson in U-boat buoyancy, and submarine-themed make-and-take activities will be featured throughout the exhibit. MSI submariner volunteers will be on hand to share their expertise and adventures, and Chief Petty Officers from the Great Lakes Naval Base who participated in the USO U-505 Naval History Program will return to MSI to serve as exhibit facilitators. This unique program is offered in partnership with the USO of Illinois and the Pritzker Military

resh, quality ingredients, innovative preparations and a chef-driven menu star at Sage Restaurant in Chesterton. The restaurant, owned by Executive Chef Joe Gaal, opened three years ago. Its menu features a variety of American/Italian offerings from specialty salads and pizzas to homemade pasta, seafood, risotto, sandwiches, flatbreads, cheese selections, innovative desserts and more. “We want to continue bringing a quality product to people,” said Gaal, adding he strives to offer recipes that stand out and are different from other restaurants. “We also make our own pasta and bread here,” he said. Among longtime favorite menu items are the Braised Short Rib Ravioli and Chicken Marsala. Gaal stressed he puts a lot of detail and care into creating his recipes. “We respect the ingredients that we’re using. And I use cooking techniques to match what I’m making here,” he said. Gaal called his style “simple” but with great attention to presentation and flavor. During a recent Sunday lunch at Sage, we tried a variety of items from the Chef’s Tasting Menu. Items included in the tasting that afternoon were Beet Salad ($7); Caesar Salad ($7); Scallops ($24); Braised Short Rib Ravioli ($17); Chicken Marsala ($16) and Ricotta Gnocchi ($16). While all of Gaal’s recipes truly

stand out in the flavor department, extra high raves went to the Chicken Marsala and Short Rib Ravioli. The chicken, thinly sliced, was extremely tender and was served over ravioli. The Marsala cream sauce proved sweet while the mushrooms and cheese ravioli added more depth of flavor to the dish. The Short Rib Ravioli also proved a winner for multi-layered flavor and a rich red sauce. Other menu items at Sage include Arancini, ($8) which are deep-fried risotto balls; Sausage Tagliatelle ($15); Tuscan Chicken Alfredo ($16); Seafood Pasta ($19); Stuffed Veal ($23) and Pork Medallions ($18). Gaal said he changes his menu seasonally and always has a risotto, pasta and fish of the day.
