What Women ReallyWant By Heather Augustyn : Times Correspondent

D

iamonds are a girl’s best friend, but how can women have luxury this holiday season when economic times are so tough? Well, women can still get what they really want, but by being a bit more frugal, and employing some good ol’ simplicity, our bank accounts can still remain intact.

Although gold prices might be at an all-time high, that means it’s a great time to buy at Malinich Jewelers in St. John, Owner Martin Malinich says now is an ideal time to buy jewelry that is in stock. “Right now it’s a buyers’ market for everything. Our inventory is at $400 gold prices even though prices are $1,100 because I have to sell things to stay in business. Gold is a big seller and if someone wants to do a trade in for gold, I’ll give them twice as much for

credit. We have everything from chains, necklaces, a lot of rings. We have a lot in the case and you’re going to get a deal.” It is still possible to give the gift of being pampered this holiday season and still pamper your wallet in the process. Nikki Roe, owner of The Cinnamon Tree Spa in Valparaiso says, “We think because of the economy the way it is, and everyone being continued on page 10 Holiday Gift Guide [ December 2, 2009 ]

A night out before the holidays may be just what mom needs; perhaps, a steak dinner from Freddy’s Steakhouse in Hammond.

om has to cook every night of the week, week after week, and then after she’s done slaving over a hot stove, and the flock is done slurping and gobbling, she has to clean the kitchen. Poor mom. So why not treat her to a special night at a local restaurant where all of the work is done for her? Connie Klideris, manager at Theo’s Steaks and Seafood in Highland says treating the women in our life to a night out for a great meal is a great way to say we care. “We have a huge selection of food that will satisfy anyone, vegetarian entries, quality steaks, all of our fish is fresh and we do gift certificates. We have a lot of holiday business and we’re open on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve,” says Klideris. Freddy’s Steakhouse in Hammond and Kelsey’s Steakhouse

in Valparaiso or Portage, and Ciao Bella Ristorante in Schererville also treat the women in our lives like royalty. Tiebel’s Family Restaurant in Schererville has been a tradition since 1929. “The easiest way to get a gift for the holiday is to get a gift card to Tiebels. We do a big business with gift card around the holidays and it’s because our quality is the best. We’ve worked on it for over 80 years. Our specialties are chicken and lake perch and we also have chops, steak, seafood, and a full bar. It’s a little bit nostalgic and we decorate a lot for the holidays,” says Steve Tiebel, owner. Remember the women in our lives this holiday season by pampering them with gifts that show we care. By choosing gifts that show we appreciate and understand our moms, wives, sisters, and girlfriends, the warmth of the season will be felt all year long.

Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm • New Weekend Hours beginning Saturday , Nov. 28 Saturday 8 am - 3pm.

What Men ReallyWant By Heather Augustyn : Times Correspondent

T

he same old necktie or bottle of cologne can get boring year after year. But sometimes it can be tough finding a gift that our dads, brothers, boyfriends, and husbands think is cool. So ditch those mindless last-minute purchases of 99-piece electric drill sets and personal groomers and get something guys really want, cause Santa’s gotta brand new bag.

Ken Zajkowski, owner of The Sportscard Store in Dyer, says sports collectibles are the ideal gift for any sports fan and they are more than just cards or a shirt—they are a meaningful way for guys, and even girls, to connect to their

past and the game. “Collectibles are a great way to give something that we remember in our childhood. Sports cards enable people to touch their past through autographs and collectibles and books. Sports fans can remember and relate to through their childhood, idolizing their childhood heroes and items from current players help fans identify seeing the players in today’s games. Memorabilia cards entice collectors with pieces of memorabilia like part of an athlete’s jersey, piece of a baseball bat, and relics that bring people as

close to the game and their hero as possible. It’s very entertaining and sports cards are a form of Americana and help people touch their past and present with entertaining collectibles,” says Zajkowski. At Harley-Davidson in Valparaiso, Manager Ginger Misch says the store is full of things that guys love. “We have things that are shiny that light up guys eyes, like our chrome. We have things that are powerful, like our bikes. And we continued on page 16

ain, snow, sleet, or hail, guys love to grill. At Gus Bock’s Ace Hardware, James Jamrock, manager of the Munster location says, “We always carry grills, all year long. We carry Weber, two different lines (gas and charcoal). They retail anywhere from $64.99 to $899, so there’s something for every price point. We are still selling them, even in the winter. For the holidays, we also sell a lot of wrench sets, Black & Decker automatic tools like tape measures, and 8-in-1 tool sets.”

When it comes to guys who love golf, the holidays are a great time to help them indulge. Ben Reeder, owner of Golf USA in Valparaiso, explains, “Golf isn’t really a sport. It’s a virus. For some people who are immune they just don’t get it and for the rest of us it’s progressive and aggressive. You start to like the game, you play, you get better, you want to play more. They’ve made some great technological advances in the past couple of years and with new technology comes hope and the promise of getting better. One of my buddies got a new driver and he’s out driving me now, and so I want to go get a new driver. When you get new clubs you don’t want the old ju-ju on the new clubs so you have to get a new bag.” To help get golf guys what they want, Reeder came up with a great solution. “We have created a holiday wish list where guys can come in, make

present to give a golf gift. “The time to get better with your game is in the winter and we have some very good training aides that work great in the winter. I carry a golf gym that trains specific golf muscles and it’s straight from the fitness van that the PGA guys use on the tour. We have some putting trainers that will cure almost any amateur golfer’s putting issue. And for fun we also have illegal golf balls to help you outdrive your buddy for the first time,” Reeder says. Kevin Hart, owner of Cedar Electric, says protecting the family home is a great gift for guys this holiday season. “We install complete home generators to protect your house, furnace, sump pump and wells. Some jobs require travel, leaving wives or girlfriends to drag a portable generator out of the garage and then try to start it. This kicks on in 15 seconds and you’re back watching TV and the furnace is running again; sump pump on again. These things sell like hot cakes and they’re one of the smartest investments you’ll ever make in your whole life. Even if you just use your basement as storage, you still have a lot of personal belongings that you wouldn’t want to lose. People want to protect their investment,” says Hart. Whether it’s sports, hogs, grills, golf, or peace of mind, guy gifts don’t have to be impossible this holiday season. So toss the tie and get rid of the personal groomer. T’is the season for great guy gifts.

K

ids, and even some adults, are never more curious than they are during the holiday season. Many kids will search the house far and wide in an effort to learn what presents await them come the big day. For parents new to the game of hiding gifts from relentless, presenthunting youngsters, the following hiding spots could ensure the surprise is still intact when kids wake up and rush

downstairs to open their gifts. ❋ Place gifts in brown bags from the supermarket and hide them in the back of the closet or under the bed. ❋ Hide gifts in the attic or basement and cover them with blankets so inquiring minds won’t see them. ❋ Stash gifts in suitcases. Kids will likely walk right past the luggage. ❋ Place gifts on a high shelf in the back of your storage closet, out of eyesight and concealed by clothes so kids aren’t

encouraged to climb and go searching while no one is around. ❋ Store gift under the kitchen sink or in the laundry room. ❋ Place small gifts inside old purses, bags or briefcases. The purse, bag or briefcase can then be hung in a closet or guest bedroom that is not used every day. ❋ Stash presents in the china cabinets. Kids most likely aren’t allowed in there anyway so they’ll never find their gifts.

❋ If all else fails, store your gifts at work or stash them at a neighbor’s home. Metrocreative

Don’t Get

UnravelledOver

Wrapping Gifts T he countdown to Christmas has begun, and in the race to get every gift bought, and every detail right for the ensuing holiday, we often forget one crucial step:

24

wrapping the presents. While some people may shutter at the idea of spending hours in crowded stores picking out presents, many others cringe at the idea of having to wrap all of their holiday finds. That’s why it becomes easy to forget about those sacks of unwrapped gifts hiding in attic eaves or lying low in the trunk of the car. But being present procrastinators won’t get the task done. Wrapping gifts may take some time, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun.

Holiday Gift Guide [ December 2, 2009 ]

❋ Find your niche: Not everyone is a master gift-wrapper. But maybe there’s a unique flair you place on your gifts that sets them apart from others ... a hallmark. It could be a certain type of paper, or an interesting gift tag. Discover your niche and embrace it. For example, professional gift wrapper Connie Rheas says that in her experience, “There are certain techniques that you must follow for a great gift but in the end, it’s all about the bow.” So maybe your niche can be creating fabulous bows to adorn the gifts you wrap. ❋ There’s fun in numbers: What’s just about everyone you know doing this time of year? Shopping for and wrapping presents and attending parties. Why not marry the activities for a spectacular evening? Host a gift-wrapping party. Everyone volunteers to bring a specific set of supplies and one person hosts the venue. Have snacks catered or simply order out for pizza. With the chatting and working going on simultaneously, you’ll get through that mountain of gifts in no time. ❋ Skip the paper and go for the bag: Gift bags can be the timecrunched gift-wrapper’s saving grace. These bags come in all sizes and require just about a minute’s time of packing to make gifts look great. What’s more, gift bags can be reused over and over. To further expand the recycling power of gift bags, choose solid-color or

holiday-neutral bags so that their reuse won’t be restricted to Christmas. ❋ Delegate: There is a quote by an unknown author that says, “Some parents could do more for their children by not doing so much for them.” This may be a good time to put this line of thinking to the test by enlisting the help of your children in wrapping presents. Naturally they shouldn’t be given their own to wrap, but they can help out with other family members’ gifts. It can be an enjoyable job for them, and it will lighten your burden. ❋ Set up a wrapping station: Sometimes the anxiety over wrapping gifts stems from the level of disorganization with which some people start the task. Take a few minutes to clear a space for wrapping. A table or another solid surface that doesn’t require you to hunch over will be most comfortable. Lay out your supplies, such as tags, pens, bows, ribbons, paper, scissors, gift receipts, etc. so that they are within easy reach. Gather together the gifts that are going to each specific person and wrap them in order. Later separate the wrapped presents according to whether they’ll be placed under the tree or put in the car to travel to a friend or relative’s house. ❋ When all else fails ... : For a small donation, many stores offer complimentary gift-wrapping. Take advantage of this service. Shopping on off-hours will ensure the lines at the wrapping area will not be too long. Metrocreative

adget fans are known for leaping on the latest technology the minute it hits store shelves. That makes shopping for something new for them a daunting challenge. But while they’ve splurged on the big-ticket item, you can still serve up some clever complements that will help them get more mileage from their devices without breaking your bank.

G

who doesn’t hate cleaning gutters? So why not let a robot tackle one of life’s most thankless jobs? From the same company that brought us the Roomba robot vacuum comes the iRobot Looj ($169). The Looj can be placed into almost any standard sized gutter and propel itself – and it’s high-powered, 500-rpm augur – through twigs, leaves, and any other debris that’s lodged in there. It’s waterproof too, and you can set the direction of the augur so that debris is blasted away from the house – not onto your roof.

For the Do-It-Yourselfer

For the Music Lover

Even if home prices have sunk like a stone, there’s no better time to recoup some value with a little old-fashioned sweat equity. Help the handyman with some high-tech gear, such as Black and Decker’s CrossFire laser level. The CrossFire ($140) projects perfectly straight lines – both horizontally and vertically or both simultaneously – for properly hanging shelving or pictures. It can be mounted to a wall, hung from a rope or simply planted on the ground. Finally, who doesn’t love robots? Moreover,

headphones to fit snugly and properly in your ear. And they’re available in blue, pink, red and black. If they’re looking for even deeper immersion, try the Quiet Comfort 15 ($299) from Bose. These noise-canceling headphones will drown out everything from airplane engines to screaming kids. They can enjoy up to 35 hours of noise cancellation on a single AAA battery. Its fold-flat ear cups and detachable cable let you stow it quickly and easily when not in use.

For the Movie Lover Home theater owners lavish over picture and sound, but are they paying attention to power? They should. A sudden influx of juice could fry their components. Monster Cable’s PowerCenter HTS 1000 MK III ($199) not only protects delicate home theater components from power surges by automatically disconnecting itself and all components from the incoming bolt but “cleans” the normal electrical signal flowing into these components for improved performance. It features eight AC outlets that are spaced out to accommodate bulkier plugs, a digital LED that displays incoming voltage, and protected jacks for cable, satellite, phone and DVRs. continued on page 28

henever something high tech makes its debut in the market, the price is usually astronomical at first, and then it slowly comes back down to earth. This holiday season, many of those high-tech items have done just that and are now priced to sell, just in time for the economic times which demand it. Eric Hart, owner of Nason’s Appliances in Crown Point says, “Big this year are our TVs. We have a big reduction in price for our LCDs and plasmas and they’re finally affordable. You can finally get 42 inch plasma for $550 and 50 inch for $750. The other big gift this year is a Blue Ray player. Last year they were priced at $300 and this year they’re $100 after rebate. The clarity is five times the clarity of a regular DVD player and they make everything look real.”

For the Home Video Fan For the family archivist who’s sitting on stacks of camcorder tapes, help bring them into the digital era with Roxio’s Easy VHS-to-DVD. This $59 hardware/software duo lets you connect any video or audio device, be it a tape-based camcorder, VCR, even an audio cassette player, to your PC’s USB port. The included software will capture that video (or audio) and burn it directly to a DVD.

For the Sharp Shooter Know someone with a digital SLR always strapped around their neck, shutter clicking endlessly? Help them bring their photos into the living room with a digital photo frame. Pandigital’s PanTouch PAN8000 ($130) frame offers a 8-inch, high resolution 800 x 600 display that’s large enough to bring out all the expressive details of their work. It has a touch-screen interface, so you don’t have to claw around the back of the frame looking for the controls. With 1GB of internal memory, you can pack thousands of photos into the frame. Or, pick up a wireless adapter and turn the PanTouch into a Wi-Fi frame that can access online photo services, such as Google’s Web Albums.

Holiday Gift Guide [ December 2, 2009 ]

If you’re looking to outfit the family computer geek, Logitech’s Anywhere Mouse will defy their expectations that mice are boring. Unlike most wireless, laser-tracking mice that can only work on textured surfaces like wood tables, the Anywhere Mouse, true to its name, can be used anywhere – including clear glass and high gloss surfaces that typically confound wireless mice. Thanks to what Logitech somewhat ominously dubs its Darkfield Laser Tracking technology, home or mobile users can set up shop nearly anywhere. Cost: $79. For those cutting-edge computer owners with Bluetooth-enabled PCs, check out Microsoft’s Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000. This super-thin keyboard can be paired with notebooks, netbooks and desktops. It will set you back $90. You can also spring for the $45 portable Bluetooth number pad. If you’re looking for a full-sized option, try Microsoft’s $79 Comfort Desktop 5000 wireless keyboard

and mouse set. This ergonomically designed pair uses 2.4GHz frequency wireless signals for connecting to a computer up to 30 feet away.

For the Road Warrior Netbooks – lightweight, low-cost laptop computers – are a great option for students, kids and even traveling professionals tired of lugging several pounds on their shoulders. Lenovo’s IdeaPad S12 offers a 12-inch display, a full-sized keyboard and the option to add a NVIDIA ION graphics engine for greater horsepower, including 1080p HD video. The customizable netbook starts at $449 and can offer up to 160GB worth of hard drive storage, 1GB of memory, Wi-Fi connectivity, a four-in-one flash memory card reader and an ExpressCard slot for adding 3G networking. If you’re prone to leaving expensive electronics in public places, the IdeaPad has facial recognition technology dubbed VeriFace that logs you in when it recognizes you.

For the Talker Tough economic times have only heightened our awareness of the importance of family, even as it’s put a strain on the purse strings. Give a family member the gift of infinite-yet-inexpensive gab with the Magic Jack. This $40 USB device plugs into any computer with a high-speed Internet connection. On the other end is an ordinary phone jack for your home phone.

The MagicJack is a USB/phone jack combo. Plug in and make calls over the Web. From that point on you’ll enjoy unlimited local and long distance calling, free voicemail, caller ID, call waiting and directory assistance for a year. After that, it costs only $20 a year to maintain your phone service and those calling features. That’s $20 a year – not a month. If your computer is turned off or if you lose a connection, calls automatically forward to a backup number.

Classics Invest in 12 festive favorites that will withstand the test of time

H

Denise DiFulco : CTW Features

oliday decorating needn’t be expensive or complicated. In fact, all you need to create magazineworthy looks in your own home is a wardrobe of holiday classics – many of which you probably already own. “There’s a lot that can be done with some very basic elements,” says Cindy Cragg, home stylist for Colonial Williamsburg, Va., the historic town renowned for its quintessential holiday decor. “You can take traditional pieces and do something really fun.” It’s easy enough to acquire the essentials: You can buy them new; find old favorites at flea markets; or shop in your own closets, basement or attic. The key to creating an exceptional and enduring collection is to stick to a particular style (Victorian, country or modern, for instance), or to accumulate pieces according to a color palette. Lifestyle expert and blogger Eddie Ross

says he often finds inspiration in vintage glass ornaments, which feature nontraditional colors, including mint green, ice blue, pink and magenta. Any one of those hues paired prominently with white or a metallic creates a festive feeling while avoiding holiday clichés. Other workable combinations include yellow and white, green and white or blue and white. And here’s one Ross says he has been dying to try: midnight blue and gold. “It’s much more sophisticated when you have a color palette that you collect,” he says. No matter what color or style you choose – or which holidays you celebrate

– here are some standard must-haves:

Glass bowls It sounds almost too simple, but glass bowls are incredibly useful for dressing up your home. A trifle bowl or hurricane glass can be filled with holiday candy, layered with pinecones and greenery or loaded with ball ornaments or dried fruit. You’re only limited by your imagination. Use them as centerpieces or as decorative elements anywhere a bare, flat surface beckons.

Make the Holidays FUN!

T

iger Lily, located in the Sawgrass Market in Chesterton, is a great place to find all sorts of the unexpected that will make the holidays fun. Owner Devon Danford says, “We have fun cocktail napkins and funny holiday mugs that have a vintage lady or man with funny sayings. We have t-shirts for babies to age ten that say ‘Santa Rocks’ and they’re our own design, glittery with snowflakes. We also have our Indiana Dunes clothing that is fun, hip, and funky. And we also have a great holiday game that is a box of Christmas questions, like ‘What’s your earliest Christmas memory,’ or ‘What’s your Christmas wish,’ which is a great way to have fun and interesting conversations with your family.”

Topiary “I think topiaries, in general, are great for people who want to incorporate a more formal look into their holiday décor,” Cragg says. They work well in pairs in foyers or on either side of the front door. Smaller ones can be lined up along a table in sets of three or five. “It has a more modern feeling if you group them together,” she says.

Candlesticks Nothing can set a mood like the flicker of candlelight, and if you have glass or metallic candleholders, all the better for stoking the continued on page 34

Holiday Flair:

Elegant Macarons Make an Entrance

These delicate French cookies are all the rage. If we could say ‘Magnifique!’ that’s what we’d call them. By Bev Bennett : CTW Features

S

ay oui to the macaron, a French confection that’s this season’s answer to the cupcake. “The French macarons are going crazy; people are always looking for something new and exciting,” says Carole Bloom, a baker and cookbook author. Like its cookie cousin, the American coconut macaroon, the French delight is meringue-based. But macaron bakers usually skip the coconut and instead sandwich cookie layers of baked meringue with a filling. And ooh la la, what a difference that makes. Imagine pistachio, key lime, lavender or candied ginger cream or mocha ganache between two crisp, airy meringue cookies. Then, to entice the eyes as well as the taste buds, bakers add a few drops of food coloring to the meringue. The result is really beautiful, says Bloom, author of

“Bite-Size Desserts,” (Wiley, 2009). “It’s a fun thing with all the colors. You can make macarons in any color and any flavor, such as a pistachio filling with lime green color. You can contrast, as well,” says Bloom, who lives in Carlsbad, Calif. As with many desserts, producing the highest quality macaron requires care. A well-made macaron has a smooth filling with a good balance of flavors, according to Rachel Rather, cookbook author and owner of Rather Sweet Bakery & Café in Fredericksburg, Texas “You don’t want a lot of sugar. A macaron has to have great, intense flavor,” says Rather, who is also seduced by the confection’s often dazzling colors. “I think it’s going to be the next big thing because you can do so much with it,” says Rather, author of the upcoming book, “The Pastry Queen Entertains,” (Ten Speed Press, 2009). Bloom’s recipe for French macarons (often spelled macaroons in the U.S.) can be found on page 44.

Almond and Mocha

Macaroon Sandwich Cookies

These are a miniature version of the very popular macaroons found in pastry shops throughout France. They are perfect for afternoon tea and as part of a cookie assortment. One or two of these will satisfy your craving for a treat. Makes about 3 1/2 dozen 1-inch sandwich cookies 2 extra-large egg whites (1/4 cup), at room temperature 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar 3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar, sifted, divided 1/2 cup water

2⁄3 cup blanched slivered or sliced almonds 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Cookies 2 jelly-roll pans with aluminum foil with shiny side up. 1.Line Place about 1 inch of water in a 3-quart saucepan and warm 2. it over medium heat. Place the egg whites in the bowl of an electric stand mixer or in a large mixing bowl. Set the bowl in the saucepan of warm water and stir constantly until the egg whites feel warm to the touch or register 160 degrees F on an instant-read thermometer. Remove the bowl from the water and wipe the sides and bottom dry.

3.

Using a grease-free wire whip attachment and a stand mixer,

3 ounces bittersweet chocolate (62 to 72 percent cacao content), very finely chopped 1⁄3 cup heavy whipping cream

or hand-held mixer and a greasefree large mixing bowl, beat the egg whites on medium speed until frothy. Add the cream of tartar and continue to whip on medium speed until the egg whites hold soft peaks. Slowly sprinkle on 1/4 cup of confectioners’ sugar and whip the egg whites until they hold firm but not stiff peaks.

4.

Place the almonds and remaining 1/2 cup of confectioners’ sugar in the work bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Pulse until the almonds are very finely ground, about 1 minute. Fold this mixture into the whipped egg

white mixture in 3 stages. Blend well after each addition.

5.

Fit a 12- or 14-inch pastry bag with a 1/2-inch round plain pastry tip. Fill the pastry bag partway with the macaroon mixture. Holding the pastry bag vertically, pipe out mounds that are about 3/4 inch in diameter. Leave at least 1 inch of space between them. Pipe out mounds that are uniform in size, so they will be the same size when assembled. If there are any points on top of the macaroons, smooth them with a damp fingertip. Let the macaroons stand at room temperature for 20 minutes so the tops dry

slightly and form a light skin before they bake, creating the correct texture.

6.

Adjust the oven racks to the upper and lower thirds and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake the macaroons for 7 minutes. Switch the pans and bake another 6 minutes, until set.

7.

Remove the pans from the oven, place on a cooling rack and let the macaroons cool completely. Carefully remove the macaroons from the foil.

Travel

Holiday

M

Tips

uch like gift giving and candy canes, travel has become synonymous with the holidays. This year, as many families prepare to cut back on holiday spending, travelers can still head off to visit longdistance relatives, or use the holidays to explore a new travel destination with their immediate family, without breaking the bank. Here are some simple penny- and stress-saving tricks to holiday travel: ❋ Abandon the beaten path. When visiting family for the holidays, choose the road less traveled; take the scenic

that

Cents

make

route. You’ll be less likely to hit heavy traffic, and traveling locally will allow you to look for hotels in the suburbs along the outskirts of major cities. Rates are often substantially lower in surrounding suburbs, particularly during tourist-heavy periods such as the holiday season. ❋ Go free. With a little research you might be surprised to find how many free activities and simple pleasures your travel destination has to offer. Create a balanced travel itinerary by pairing more expensive tourist destinations with a picnic in a nearby park or taking in the local main street holiday decoration display, parade or festival.

❋ Save your sanity. While you might be heading to visit family this holiday season, that doesn’t necessarily mean you want to stay with them. Staying in a nearby hotel will still afford you the chance to spend time with relatives, but it will also allow you to keep your ‘cool’ and survive the season. ❋ Give yourself something you actually want. While you probably won’t be able to avoid getting another necktie or bathrobe this holiday season, you can exercise the power of choice when looking for a hotel. Get the most bang-

for-your-buck by staying at an upscale extended stay hotel that provides more than just a bed. According to family travel expert Lisa McElroy, “The holidays can be such an expensive time, with gift-giving and holiday travel. If you can save money but stay in comfort, your family holiday trip will be one to remember. Consider an upscale extended-stay hotel, like Homewood Suites by Hilton, where you and the kids can make use of a full kitchen, plus spread out in separate bedrooms. If the hotel includes meals and offers free internet, even better -- you’ll be able to put your holiday dollars towards celebrating the season.” ❋ Avoid peak dates and book early. Because many families know well in advance where they’ll be spending the holidays, booking early is a great way to save money. Many hotels offer advanced purchase rates that can save families who book early significant amounts of money. Some are sweetening the deal even more with special giveaways! When booking, keep in mind that most hotels also have rates that fluctuate during peak travel days. However, booking in advance can help mollify those rates. ❋ Up the fun! Fun doesn’t have to end once families return to the hotel. Instead, find a facility that offers a pool for the kids to play in and fitness facility for adults to enjoy, unwind and fight off those extra holiday pounds. DENTURE SUFFERERS NEEDED

For a New Clinical Study that Fixes Denture Problems

“For the first time in over 20 years, I can eat with no pain, chew without fear of a loose denture and poor digestion, speak in public and socialize without being concerned about smiling too broadly showing gaps in my smile from missing teeth. Fear had led to many of my problems. The dental procedure was extensive and yet free from pain. The sedation was truly amazing, treatment went flawlessly and the follow-up dental care has been terrific! I have never been as comfortable going to a Dentist as I have been with Dr. Atcha!”

Do you suffer with painful & embarrassing dentures? Tired of dentures ruining eating, speech and appearance? If so, there’s good news, you may qualify to participate in a new research study for replacing teeth using dental implants to end denture problems at a reduced cost. Inability to eat with confidence prevents social outings and keeps you away from your favorite foods and restaurants. Missing teeth can make it difficult to control weight by limiting nutritional choices. Overheard remarks about denture wear are painful, fortunately, self-esteem can improve after regaining your teeth and smile. Implants improve sex life and a nice smile can mean more income for those working. Finally, science now shows that teeth affect long term health. With these benefits, how could you not look into this for yourself, kids, grandkids, or spouse? Dr. Atcha’s unique Method™ of care for complex dental problems is recommended by more fellow dentists in NW Indiana and Illinois. The latest advances and convenience of everything in one office. For those with anxiety, IV sedation guarantees comfort as part of the study. Dental implants are the next best thing to having your original set of natural teeth and can end your denture problems permanently. A one-of-a-kind warranty is even provided for peace of mind. Openings are limited and participants are accepted on a first come basis. Dr. Ivan Atcha featured on Fox , CNN and Yahoo! News

odi Newbern’s introduction to the idea of re-gifting began early when, at six years old, she tried to give her mom a box of gloves that her mom already owned. But for others, the initiation into the re-gifting world comes when they unwrap a present and a hot pad with Elvis’ face smirks back – at the annual white elephant party. Newbern, author of “Regifting Revival!: A Guide

to Reusing Gifts Graciously” (Synergy Books, 2009), has grown up re-gifting. Though re-gifting and thus white elephant parties are often thought of as tacky and tasteless, she says the traditional holiday exchange is an opportunity to recycle your gift waste, clear your clutter and use your creativity. “White elephant parties are a great idea,” she says. “Everyone can bring things they don’t want, have an open exchange, bring wrapped gifts to continued on page 51

You end up with something someone else didn’t want so it doesn’t go to waste.” According to Albert Jack, author of “Red Herrings and White Elephants: The Origins of Phrases We Use Everyday” (Harper Collins, 2005), a white elephant is an expression used to describe something valuable that has, or will, become a huge burden to those who possess it. It suggests the cost of possession could ruin a person financially. As the legend goes, in Siam (present day Thailand) white elephants were highly valued and became property of the king upon discovery. The king would then give them as royal gifts to subjects who displeased him, which often caused such a burden that they would ruin the subjects. Jack writes that the phrase arrived in England when Empire builders brought it home with them, applying it to impressive yet useless structures. The official history of white elephant gifts exchanges is surprisingly elusive; though plenty of theories and a Wikipedia entry exist, few academics claim expertise. Cele Otnes, professor of business administration, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, whose

personal expertise lies in gift giving, says perhaps it is because the ritual is celebrated only by certain subgroups, rather than as a whole in the culture. “Holiday traditions that are either widely celebrated or that are supported by marketing have origins that are typically better developed and more easily traceable,” she says. Nowadays, a variety of familiar exchanges carry the white elephant label, ranging from the “most ridiculous gift you can find” to more focused parties, such as an “ugly lamp swap.” Other times hosts require attendees to bring nicer things they have but have never used, like glassware, kitchen utensils or wine. Newbern suggests a holiday-themed exchange, where people bring the best and worst of what they have of unused holiday gifts, from Christmas ornaments to gingerbread cookie jars.

Usually at the beginning of the party, everyone draws a number. Number one picks first, unwraps the gift and can choose to keep or pass. Otnes says the process continues and the rules of swapping then apply – usually an item can only change hands a certain number of times, such as three – until a gift can no longer be “stolen” or swapped. For a proper white elephant gift, the first fundamental rule is that almost any gift can be re-gifted but not in any way. “Sometimes people think just change the tag and it’s good, but there are different things you can do to make it unique and thoughtful,” she says. Newbern suggests embellishing the gift you previously received, a process she has coined as “gracious-regifting,” by adding personal touches, repackaging or mixing it with other gifts you can’t use to create a

theme basket. Otnes says white elephant parties need to be thrown with caution, however, because they carry with them social risk. Event in a poor economy, she thinks people are more likely to turn to practical items like Wal-Mart gift cards, which were popular at Christmas last year. Rather than participating in instead of these kinds of parties, people will just cut back by drawing names instead of giving to everyone on the side of a family. The exchanges can be dangerous because of the potential for hurt feelings, feeling on the outside of inside jokes or simply because the gift lacks individual meaning. However, Newbern says a white elephant exchanges can be an excellent way to revive the idea of re-gifting, which will save money and stress while dealing with the economy this holiday season. “A family might decide not to do a gift exchange to cut down on expenses, but there are ways to get around that,” she says. “Our family decided we are having a re-gift Christmas this year – when you make it apparent, it takes the pressure off, so people can have fun with it. You can still give great gifts without feeling cheesy or tacky.”

B

rimming with gifts on Christmas morning, beautifully decorated handmade stockings do much more than hold gifts: Miniature boot-shaped stockings can be used as ornaments for the tree or to decorate a package—they can even be turned into Advent calendars. Choose the pattern for your stocking from among our templates, or create your own. Tools and Materials

Felt is a classic Christmas-stocking material, and it’s also a pleasure to work with; it won’t slip or snag when sewn, and since it never unravels, it doesn’t need to be hemmed. If you want decorative edging, you can easily add it to seams and cuffs with pinking shears. A size-fourteen needle and 100-percent-polyester thread give the best results on a sewing machine. Also, consider less traditional materials for your stockings: Cashmere stockings adorned with handmade feathered birds are luxurious, and even worn blankets and old sweaters can be given new life as beautiful heirloom stockings.

Christmas Tree Stocking Trace the stocking template onto two layers of ecru felt; pin the layers together, and sew around the perimeter, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance and leaving the top open. Trim seams with pinking shears. To make the trees, trace our evergreen template onto several shades of green felt. Cut out with scissors, then trim edges with pinking shears. Decorate with vintage glass buttons sewn on with thread in a contrasting color, then tacked onto the stocking with a few stitches. Add a ribbon or felt loop for hanging.
