LETTER ratitude is a powerful quality. It can cause a person to do a 180, completely changing their perspective on what would otherwise be deemed a less-than-ideal situation. For example... our brand new dishwasher recently broke down. When my husband called the repair company to fix it, the only date that worked for both schedules was three weeks out. My first thought was, “We have to go three weeks without a dishwasher? How will we survive?” Oh, the tragedy. I was quickly convicted when I remembered that we’re fortunate to even have running water in this country. In so many nations, people have to walk miles to get to a well and still sometimes walk away empty-handed. Suddenly, a temporarily broken dishwasher was quite certainly no big deal. This is what gratitude does... it causes us to look at our insanely blessed lives from a wide-angle view and replaces our selfishness and entitlement with thankfulness and humility. Gratitude transforms us. Because November is the month of Thanksgiving, we asked local women to do just that: give thanks. Their answers—found on pages 14-15—reveal the kind and generous hearts behind each woman. You can tell that some of them remembered things to include as they went along, their list expanding as their minds reeled. That’s the other cool part about gratitude... once practiced, you’ll find it everywhere. I’m sure one thing we can all appreciate is good food, and there’s plenty of it in this issue. Flip to page 56 to see photos of a stunning farm-to-table Thanksgiving spread, painstakingly prepared by Melody Kwiatkowski of Village Side Farm. We also have recipes for outside-the-box Thanksgiving side dishes on page 36 and for fun apple cider cocktails on page 33. I’ll close by sharing a small portion of what I’m grateful for... my faith, my husband and two daughters, my wonderfully cozy home, and my work with this magazine. Thanks to all of you for reading. rika Dahl wakes up every morning with a sense of purpose. As director of communications at South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority (CVA), she has a hand in almost every aspect of the organization that plays an essential role in boosting Northwest Indiana’s economy. “At the CVA, our goal is to ‘put heads in beds and cheeks in seats’ by promoting tourism in the South SShore—by hore—by encouraging visitors to stay in our hotel rooms, visit our attractions, and eat in our restaurants,” she says. While there are days when the job is extremely demanding, Dahl reminds herself that she has been given an important and gratifying opportunity to serve the community where she was born and raised. “The hospitality industry is such a fun industry to work in—from creating relationships to promoting our wonderful attractions, restaurants, and hotels,” she says. “And [tourism] improves the quality of life for our residents because visitors stay here and spend money here.” Though her job keeps Dahl extremely busy, that doesn’t stop her from looking and feeling her best. Known for her classic-meets-eclectic style, Dahl is often found in basic, monochromatic dresses and outfits that are accented by her changing accessories, shoes, and hairstyle. “I change my hair a lot,” she says. “I could go from long hair to a pixie cut or a Mohawk, and I often change colors and add highlights.” Dahl says her home also reflects her unique style. With classic furniture pieces, she uses home accessories to add pops of color and flair. “I will take one classic piece that will never go out of style and then choose the accent pieces and wall hangings that keep the space fresh,” she says. “This sums up the way I dress, as well.” Utilizing classic basics mixed with a touch of whatever her personality is that day allows Dahl to change styles frequently, yet affordably. And no matter what, she says it is important to remain true to herself. “It’s not important to me to ‘keep up with the Joneses,’” she says. “Just because everyone else is doing it doesn’t mean you have to. Sweet, crisp, and refreshing, apple cider is a seasonal treat that many look forward to every year. Drink it chilled for a refreshing sweet drink or heat and add a cinnamon stick to warm up on a chilly day. Monessa Dowd, manager and bartender at Bon Femme CafĂŠ in Valparaiso, gives apple cider a grown-up twist with these fun fall recipes. â&#x2013; EVE ADAMS

APPLE CIDER MARGARITA 1 ounce Gran Marnier 1.5 ounce Tequila Gold 3 ounces apple cider

Put all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake. Rim glass with coarse salt. Pour over ice.

Garnish with whipped cream and sprinkle with cinnamon and brown sugar.

Use large pitcher for preparation. 1 bottle chilled Pinot Grigio 1 cup chilled club soda 1 cup chilled apple cider 1 chopped Granny Smith apple 1 chopped Red Delicious apple 1 chopped Gala apple

Add chopped apples to pitcher.

1 ounce Tuaca ½ ounce vanilla vodka

4 ounces hot apple cider Put all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake. Large Red Delicious apples scooped out make festive cups. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.

CARAMEL APPLE MARTINI (ABOVE)

2½ ounces caramel vodka 4 ounces apple cider

Rim martini glass with caramel syrup and place in freezer until caramel hardens and glass chills. Put ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Garnish by floating apple ring on top.

½ cup chilled Champagne of your choice ½ cup of chilled apple cider

Among favorites are fresh cranberry sauce. “I put a little bit of orange in it,” she says, which gives it a bit more of a sweet flavor. “I also do a sweet potato recipe with candied pecans and streusel on top,” she says. Various vegetables always make interesting and flavorful sides, Cameron says. She enjoys making a fall maple glazed carrot dish with multi-colored carrots. “I sauté them with butter and a little brown sugar,” she says. Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Butternut Squash and Maple-Bacon Vinaigrette

2 pounds Brussels sprouts, quartered 2 cups butternut squash, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch dice 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Vinaigrette: 8 ounces good quality bacon, chopped (we like Nueske’s) 1 shallot, peeled and minced 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup real maple syrup (we like Blis Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple from Michigan or Deep River Maple) 1 cup chicken stock

To make vinaigrette: In large sauté pan, over medium heat, cook bacon until fat is rendered and it is brown and crispy. Add shallot and cook another minute or two until it’s translucent. Deglaze pan with apple cider vinegar. Whisk in mustard. Add maple syrup and chicken stock. Boil about 10 minutes until liquid is reduced by half and has thickened slightly. Set aside while roasting Brussels sprouts and squash.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Butternut Squash and Maple-Bacon Vinaigrette at Gamba Ristorante

Brussels Sprouts and Squash: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Toss Brussels sprouts and squash with oil and salt. Spread Brussels sprouts and squash in single layer on large, parchment-lined sheet tray. It’s important that they aren’t too crowded for them to roast rather than steam. Roast 15-20 minutes until squash is tender, and Brussels sprouts are lightly browned and crispy on the outside. Just prior to serving, reheat bacon maple vinaigrette and bring to a boil. Add Brussels sprouts and squash to pan with warm vinaigrette, heat through, and serve immediately. -From Mike Rueth

Pecan Streusel Sweet Potatoes 2 (29-ounce) cans sweet potatoes

Topping Ingredients: 1/2 cup white sugar 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup chopped pecans 1/2 cup butter, melted 1/3 cup butter, melted 1/2 cup milk 1 cup flour 2 eggs 1 teaspoon salt 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 x 9 casserole dish. Mash drained sweet potatoes. Mix sweet potatoes, white sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup butter, milk, eggs, salt, vanilla and pumpkin pie spice together until smooth; spread in even layer in casserole dish. Stir 1/2 cup brown sugar, pecans, and 1/3 cup of butter together in small bowl. Mix flour into pecan mixture using your hands or a fork until crumbly; cover potatoes evenly with topping. Bake for about 40 minutes until cooked through and topping is lightly browned. Tip: double the amount and make another to freeze until your next holiday occasion or to share with a friend. Fall Maple Glazed Carrots 1-1/2 pounds carrots, peeled and cut in sticks or circles (substitute baby carrots if desired) 1/4 cup butter 1/3 cup maple syrup Salt and pepper to taste Pinch of Lawry’s seasoned salt

Place carrots in a pot with salted water. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 15-20 minutes until slightly soft. Drain and set aside. Melt butter in saucepan over medium-low heat. t’s like something out of one of those aspirational commercials for life insurance or pharmaceuticals: a group of good-looking people (often clad in chic white linen and denim, and representing a crosssection of desirable demographics) gathered around a beautifully crafted and impeccably decorated wooden table in the middle of a fall field or some other appropriately pastoral setting to enjoy a wonderful alfresco meal and the pleasure of each other’s sparkling company. A St. John couple delights in DIY projects for their Dutch-inspired home

t was when Lynn Hoeksema, who is afraid of heights, found herself on scaffolding in the great room helping husband Clair try to install a massive curtain rod near the vaulted ceiling that she had a bit of déjà vu. She’d been there before. They’d been installing design elements in their St. John, Indiana, home a few years ago. Lynn was cautiously crawling along the as-yet un-railed catwalk above the great room, trying not to look down. Since then Lynn, une femme d’un certain age, has been just as intrepid, alongside her husband, the two completing in harmony arduous DIY projects that would be too DIY for many. Example: She installed ceramic flooring and wall tiles—all of it, from kitchens (yes, two), to five of the six baths, to porch, to finished basement, including basement utility rooms. So sewing drapes for the great room and her office may seem tame by comparison, except for their material—a subtle, rich dupioni silk—length, and breadth (the entire great room

wall). She recalls having to lay the whole thing out on the basement floor, “crawling around it to cut the fabric and lining,” which are puddled at the base. Just as for the 9-foot-tall window in her office, the sewing seemed “like making a large tent!” Still, “I love doing these things” in the 5,000-square-foot home, Lynn says. And she loves that Clair is a partner in home projects, except for the deep walk-in pantry he built alone, “just for me.” The motionsensor light is a favorite element. Two kitchens, one in the finished basement, are invaluable with the considerable entertaining the couple enjoys. Moving to St. John from South Holland, Illinois, in 1971 to be among close-knit friends who share their Dutch origins, the Hoeksemas built their home in 2006, with Clair and his nephew doing most of the work. The house is a balance of English design, Dutch décor, and modern conveniences. A summer gathering of 40 fellow Tri Kappa women was easily handled from the second kitchen, with double oven, dishwasher, large island, and dining area.

An additional dining area plus long window seat with storage for cushions and pillows allows lots of comfy space for younger visiting relatives. Young and older love the home theater; Clair bought the seats original to a theater in Michigan and, of course, installed them himself. He and Lynn also remodeled the bath downstairs; Clair wrestled with the plumbing and rainfall shower head and Lynn tiled color and walls, creating a bench and niche as well. Lynn is matter-of-fact, saying, “We just watched Internet programs on how to do it.” The main-floor kitchen’s large, polished-granite island and wine cooler make entertaining easier here, too, and the breakfast bar is where Lynn pores over recipes from her collection of more than 100 cookbooks. Her favorite accents: The three-panel depictions in Portuguese tile of fish and fowl and the tulip-dotted Turkish tiles over the stove. A few steps down through a French door is the breakfast nook, large by most standards, with full dining table and hutches displaying the couple’s much-loved Delft blue earthenware. The formal dining room and other areas also have the blueLynn Hoeksema and-white accents—lamps, bowls, vases—as well as one of the eight themed Christmas trees throughout the home at the holidays. A red, white, and blue display of Americana in Lynn’s polished-wood office attests to the couple’s deep patriotism, and an open armoire holds Norman Rockwell figures. The master bedroom features a fashion-lover’s dream: a walk-in closet with dual-height racks and shelving for everything. Lynn made the skirt for the master bed in the room filled with light that looks out over the two-level patio. Clair built the pergola for the ceramic-tiled patio, and Lynn installed the pale brick surrounding the gas grill, a process that was work but that she seems to have enjoyed almost as much as she enjoys the leisure time there now.

On a hallway wall is a quilt Lynn made with the help of her motherin-law; the intricate Hawaiian theme includes stitched pineapples. “They represent hospitality. Everyone’s welcome here,” Lynn says. With plenty of natural light streaming into the house from wide, tall windows during the day, a French chandelier lights the way upstairs in the evening. At one end of the catwalk is one of the guest bedrooms, in which Lynn still looks bemused as she regards the sink installed here, though guests seem to appreciate it. Clair’s office and a favorite TV-viewing area is up here, as well as another guest bedroom that holds a vintage secretary discovered in Jasper County, Indiana. One of the baths, the only one with a hardwood floor, has a cabinet with Lynn’s mother’s collection of unusual and lovely perfume bottles, a couple of them with women and scenes painted on the inside by Chinese artists. A walk-in attic makes storage and retrieval simple. Up here, too, is the tiniest of sewing rooms, yet Lynn loves it. Spools of thread hang on a wooden board within arm’s reach and fabric awaits her latest project. Does it sound as if this couple uses all their time addressing major projects for their elegant and warm home? It may, but that’s not the case at all. “Clair was bored with retirement,” Lynn says, so he works full time. Lynn does, too, at a health-care facility. During half the year they help plan the annual September Dutch Festival at Elim Christian Services in Palos Hills, Illinois. “Spirituality is important to us,” says Lynn, her expressive eyes conveying deep conviction. “By what we do we can show what is meaningful in our lives.” She demurs at taking credit, and only by asking did we learn of the couple’s involvement in philanthropic activities. A brochure on the counter indicates an upcoming event she’s helping to organize: this year’s 19th annual Zeta Psi Chapter of Tri Kappa area Christmas Home Tour, with proceeds going to local scholarships and charities. The timing seems suited, for she and Clair love everything Christmas, from festive trappings to the meaning of the season.

Valpo mother and autism advocate Tricia Brouwers finds hope in an apple orchard

hat many parents would consider a complete nightmare, Tricia and Jon Brouwers find as their family’s “miracle.” Sixteen years ago, five pediatricians told Tricia that her son Daron, now 18 years old, was “lazy,” “just a boy,” and “going though some issues,” and advised her not to worry about it. As a mother, she just could and would not accept that explanation. Feeling overwhelmed, she met a lady at church who would eventually become her beacon of light and Daron’s first speech pathologist. “Susan Fox told me it sounds like autism,” Brouwers says. “Daron was experiencing a loss of language, becoming increasingly irritated and his skills were diminishing right before my very eyes. It was devastating.” Upon the diagnosis, Tricia

was determined to fight and educate other parents, and when she attended her first walk at Soldier Field, she felt compelled to become involved and eventually serve as a board member for Autism Speaks in an attempt to help get the word out. Autism Speaks is a non-profit dedicated to change the future for all who struggle with the disorder. “Parents need to understand what is going on,” Brouwers says. “Answers weren’t available at our fingertips like they are now. Think about it—sixteen years ago we still had dial-up Internet service.” Brouwers and her family have been emphatically influenced by their journey and have become better equipped to help Daron and his special needs. Daron’s 21-year-old sister Lauren is at Purdue University attaining her master’s degree as a board certified behavioral analyst to help others like her brother. In elementary school, Lauren created a lunch buddy group because she refused to let a classmate with special needs eat alone and feel neglected. “My brother’s condition has taught me to care for people on a different level,” Lauren says. “I really feel that it’s helped me to truly love people, especially who are loved last, loved less and those not loved at all. Daron and I are only two years apart and I’m proud and honored to be so close to him.”

The two simple tenets of family and food are its greatest asset. Inspired Living wanted to honor this humble holiday by going back to the land. Event planner Tasha Raylene and her chef sister Melody Kwiatkowski paired up to prepare a beautifully designed dinner made completely from items grown on Melody’s farm. Tasha writes about their inspiration along the way.

The beauty of the Thanksgiving table is family. When I was asked to style this shoot, I immediately thought of my own family. “Farm-to-Table” is an everyday lifestyle for my sister, whom I call the modern-day “Rosie the Riveter.” I could picture her dinner table full of amazingly warm and rustic dishes, with food straight from her own fields, just like the menu items she created for this shoot. There are so many local resources available for achieving a DIY farm-to-table menu. The relationship between the local community and the local farmer is crucial in guaranteeing a dependable channel of farm-fresh products, affording us all the peace of mind of knowing who, how, when and where our food is grown.

Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to flood the table with all things beautiful. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a firm believer that when it comes to dĂŠcor, simply put, there are no rules. Be creative and mix and match china, patterns and textures to build a table that speaks to your individual style. I wanted to incorporate my style by blending modern touches to this farmto-table inspiration. By adding subtle geometric shapes, while keeping the place settings neutral in blacks, whites and golds, the Lenox line by Kate Spade New York offered a variety of complementary pieces that were soft and elegant but looked stunning against the rich handcrafted wood table.

5 HOLIDAY HOSTING TIPS 1. VARIETY: I love variety. Variety of flavors, colors and textures—anything to keep my guests intrigued. Offer a few menu options that your guests will be familiar with, but be sure to throw in a curve ball or two to make them reach outside of their normal dining wheelhouse.

n ancient health remedy is making a major resurgence of late, touted for its all-natural healing powers. We’re talking about essential oils. Everyone is talking about essential oils. Nicole Spangler of Lansing, Ill., an independent distributor of Young Living oils, says an essential oil is a concentrated liquid that is distilled from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. “When diffused, inhaled, applied topically, incorporated into massage, or taken as a supplement they help our bodies maintain better health naturally,” she says. The purposes of the oils run the gamut—from relieving allergy symptoms to soothing muscle soreness to improving mental clarity. Bottom line, if you have a physical or mental ailment, there’s an oil for that. “One of my personal favorite oils for supporting a healthy immune response is a blend called Thieves,” Spangler says. “During the fall and winter seasons I [put two drops of Thieves] in a cup of tea to give my immune system a boost. he latest craze in makeup is contouring the face to create dimension and balance with a flawless look. See: Kim Kardashian’s Instagram feed. Makeup artist Krystyn Smith of LaPorte offers a step-by-step guide for the everyday woman on how to get this hot look in just four easy steps. Before we get started, you’ll want to make sure you have the right products: face primer, three foundation sticks, translucent loose powder, a fluffy beauty brush, and a beauty sponge. The foundation shades should be your existing foundation color, one that is two shades deeper, and one that is two shades lighter. Step 1: You will want to prep your skin by applying your primer and then your existing foundation color. Use your fingertips to create full coverage. A uniform base is key. Think of it like painting on a fresh canvas.

Step 2: Start with the darkest foundation stick and apply to the temples going up into the hairline. Next you will want to bring out your cheekbones. Apply the same dark color directly under the bone. When you smile, follow the hollow part under the apple of the cheek. Finally apply a streak on each side of the nose to create depth. Blend by tapping a damp beauty sponge over the pigmented color. Keep tapping in small circular motions until you are fully blended. Step 3: Now use the lightest foundation stick to illuminate. Add the color to the undereye area, the center of the forehead, the bridge of the nose, and on the chin. Once again, blend with a damp beauty sponge in a tapping circular motion. Step 4: Once you are completely blended out, use your beauty brush and dust the entire face with your translucent loose powder. The secret here is that the powder seals in the foundation for an all-day flawless look. It’s easy and quick to do. “Contouring and highlighting can brighten up your face and give a more awake look,” Krystyn says. “So don’t be scared of that crazy war paint. Play around and rock what you’ve got.” ■ ERIC CARTER
