ate autumn-early winter is the most superb time of year to enjoy the Lake Michigan region and I’m not just talking about the visual pleasures of colors and visceral sensations provided by an abundant harvest. I’m talking about consuming it, specifically via the inter-connectedness of Shore’s client networks with agriculture, restaurants, retailers, non-profits and even specialty products. Farm-to-table meals are only a small part of the story.

CHEER VISITSHOREMAGAZINE.COM

For centuries this region has been known as a source for quality hardwoods and more than a decade ago began recycling barn materials for floors and ceilings that are both beautiful and durable. Recently, I have seen this ingenuity taken to the next level by repurposing the floor of a bowling alley into a new retail concept showroom that includes an art gallery and home furnishings center encompassing a coffee and wine bar. The strong wood recycled has also been cleverly re-used in building some of the furniture on display. What Shore reader doesn’t have his or her preferred coffee bean roaster, local winery, craft distillery and brewery these days? I may not have as well-developed a palate as I would like but can definitely taste the difference between a mediocre vintage from out-of-state and an excellent, moderately-priced regional brand. This region leads the country in exporting certain crop categories like beans, squash, and cucumbers for pickles, cherries, blueberries, apples, Easter Lilies, geraniums and impatiens. Specialty products like honey, spearmint and peppermint are taking hold and literally growing market share, especially in Indiana. The Lake Michigan shore’s unequaled access to multiple forms of transportation makes it a natural fulcrum for the next wave of indoor farming as well. Whether planning a vegetable garden or clearing the space for a stone pizza oven in your backyard next year or chopping down your own fresh Christmas tree a couple of weeks from now, we are reaping the benefits of ideas and seeds planted many years ago. It is something to keep in mind for Spring. The end of the year is often a time of reflection and goalsetting for what’s coming up but it’s very important to keep in mind—and this is as difficult for me as anyone—how far we have come in 2014, especially in terms of innovation and quality in our surroundings. As every interior or exterior designer will tell you, your landscape from bookshelves to fire pits is a visual extension of who you are. This time of celebration is also the perfect opportunity to take a hard look at the accomplishments that mean so much to us,Flickr our families andTwitter the future. Most Retweet of us don’t Delicious get much chance to think about those things often enough. ow that my shopping habits have matured enough to include less impulsive and more thoughtful behavior, I have begun to appreciate the creativity in the process. The downside is certain deadlines must be met but that’s a minor consideration when the gift leaves the recipient searching for the words to describe an overwhelming feeling. Perhaps the only downside is figuring out where the next level is in 2015. Last year, my oh-so-brilliant sister-in-law Jennifer gave my brother and his two almost adult sons plane tickets, a house rental for a week, along with tickets to the White Sox Spring training camp in Arizona. How is she going to top that? Well, she’s in Moscow on a business trip at the moment so I’m optimistic and can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015

That said, I am growing somewhat skeptical of the pre-packaged total experience because of my bias towards the thought counting and the thought really does count very much. When I get a chance to visit our Shore boutique retailers as I did this autumn just past I am seriously impressed with two constants, the deep knowledge and connection to their customers and their market Delicious and the original thinking that is evident in curating the services Flickr and products that they offer. For example, I do not necessarily covet jewelry but traveling around Northwest Indiana and southwestern Michigan in recent weeks has altered my perspective MySpace so I am dropping hints in embarrassing detail atFacebook the moment. But for those readers at a loss, our gift guide is rich with imaginative ways (large and small) to express love and gratitude this season. Anyone on your list need to get healthy? Don’t hesitate on devices Mixx and apps. Just keeping tabs on eating, sleeping Slash andDot moving for 30 minutes a day or more makes a difference and the new generation of software sends reminders that are both positive and forceful—like Oprah being affirmative via your smartphone. Reddit pages. In FriendFeed You will find my personal favorites books in these my world, everybody still loves books—mostly in print and so everybody gets at least one book. But my truly favorite story in this issue is horses in winter and that’s not just because of Tony Martin’s fabulous photography—although that Newsvine is beautiful for SlideShare sure and you can see more of it by accessing the story online—it is an in your face reminder that animals and people need extra TLC in challenging weather. Like most people I know I doubt that we Yahoo will get blasted two years in a row, but I am trying to prepare for Yahoo Buzz the worst and hope for the best. If you haven’t already, prepare your live streaming list. Don’t forget to put The Grand Budapest Hotel near the top if you haven’t seen it already. Just a suggestion. Microsoft My wish for you and your family is that you have one of those MSN classic holiday seasons that everyone will remember forever, in a good way. This year will be special for me because I have been lucky enough to have two relative newcomers to our holiday celebrations this year: Teddy, now age three andApp hisStore little brotherAmazon Henry, age one.

According to Kolavo, vice president of perishable operations for Strack & Van Til which owns 38 supermarkets in Indiana and Illinois, the largest growing groups in need of food stability are children and seniors. Though Kolavo, having spent 15 years on the board, is the longest standing member of the Food Bank, Strack & Van Til has been involved with the organization almost since its inception in 1982. “With the connection we have with food and with the people of Lake and Porter counties in dire need of food, it’s been an important part of Strack & Van Til,” he says noting that their goal is not only to provide food but nutritious food as well. To help promote awareness and raise money for charitable organizations, Strack & Van Til sponsors events like their annual golf outing which Kolavo, along with Andy Raab, senior vice president of operations warehouse stores at Ultra Foods and Town & Country Markets which are part of the grocery store chain, which last year raised $230,000. This holiday season Strack & Van Til is partnering with Bistro 54 in Hobart and Green Sense Farms to host a farm to table dinner on November 2 with the proceeds going to the Food Bank. “Dinners like this one are part of our commitment to the community,” says Robert Colangelo, founding farmer and CEO of Green Sense. “Miller Beach Café featured our leafy greens at a farm to table dinner and it was such a success, that we thought that was great but we wanted to do something to raise money for charity.”

ore than 17.5 million or 14.3 percent of American households struggled against hunger in 2013 according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Economic Research Service. And for the Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area which includes parts of Northwest Indiana, the statistics are equally grim with, the food hardship rate for households with children at 21.8 percent and 13.6 percent for households without children. Last year, the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, a 501© (3) private nonprofit organization and a USDA approved, primary distributor of food to local pantries, shelters, day care centers and soup kitchens, distributed six million pounds of food throughout Lake and Porter counties. And though that sounds like a whole lot of food, their goal is to provide 17 million pounds of food a year. “We’re still not meeting the needs of the hungry,” says Joe Kolavo, past president and member of the board of directors for the Food Bank. “There’s a huge gap between what we can provide and the need that’s out there.”

Area companies pair generosity with gourmet

The idea of partnering with Strack & Van Til which Colangelo terms a “true local grocery store” with a commitment to use local as much as possible and Bistro 54, a family owned and operated restaurant with the same local sensibilities, was a perfect solution for their goal of community outreach. Green Sense, which provides microgreens such as Sweet Thai Basil and Ruby Red Radish, culinary greens—think herbs, lettuces (Baby and Butterhead) and leafy greens like kale and chard to all of the Strack & Van Til stores as well as to the Midwest Distribution Center for Whole Foods where their produce travels to eight states and 48 stores, is the nation’s largest indoor, commercial, vertical farm and user of Philips LED grow lights which means says Colangelo, they can grow more produce in a much shorter period of time using just one tenth of the space taken up by a traditional farm. “And where else can you get fresh greens in February?” he asks. Colangelo, who was recently named a Fellow with the Northwest Indiana Society of Innovators for his pioneering thinking and actions in farming, sees the power of farm to fork restaurants to help revitalized neighborhoods, towns and cities. “I have a nationally syndicated radio show called Green Sense and the theme of one of our recent shows was how Miller Beach was depressed but now undergoing a resurgence and how food plays an important part in that,” he says. “We wanted to help bring some exposure to these restaurants that have high culinary standards and believe in local and how they often are the first businesses to help in transitioning areas.” It’s also a pay back to the community which Colangelo says has been so generous and welcoming. “It’s not about just making money,” he says. “It’s about doing good.” Though at press time, the event at Bistro 54 was sold out, both Kolavo and Colangelo say they will be hosting other similar events. Kolavo had an upfront and personal experience with hunger on the day we talked. He was attending a deli managers meeting at St. James Parish in Highland. As they were winding up and heading out, Kolavo and others noticed a couple standing in front of the parish’s food pantry. “It was closed,” he says. “But luckily we had manufacturers at our meeting who brought food products along. We put these together and were able to give them something to take home to eat. But if we hadn’t, they probably would have gone hungry tonight.” -JANE AMMESON

With the connection we have with food and with the people of Lake and Porter counties in dire need of food, it’s been an important part of Strack & Van Til.

Frida Kahlo exhibit explores diversity of self After months of pursuit, this winter, the South Shore Arts will exhibit the highly anticipated art collection titled, “The complete Frida Kahlo: Her Painting. Her Life. Her Story.” Frida Kahlo, 1931

dresses from Mexico, jewelry, artifacts and historic photographs detailing Kahlo’s life. “As one of the foremost Latina artists of all time, she is part of the heritage of many area residents. But her artwork is not only about being Latina; it is also about being female and physically challenged and Frida Kahlo as a Tehuana a human being who was very much at the heart of many historical movements and events of the 20th century. Our exhibit is a celebration of all things Frida—her paintings, her life, her story,” says Cain. Laura Cutler, director of exhibitions, will work directly with the curator and installer from Global Entertainment Properties to install the collection, which will take a week to complete. “I’m extremely excited about the upcoming arrival of this exhibit. Anticipation for the opening has been building for months. This exhibit presents a wonderful art educational opportunity and numerous school groups have already signed up for tours,” says Cutler. If a school group or an organization has interest in a docent tour, reservations can be made by calling Cutler at 836.1839 ext. 108. “The purpose of South Shore Arts’ bringing the Frida Kahlo exhibit to our region is primarily educational. In recognition of our community’s diversity, the board of directors felt that this is the perfect exhibit to teach people of all ethnicities about this pivotal woman artist of the 20th century,” says John Cain, executive director at South Shore Arts. Exhibition dates will be November 16 through January Frida Kahlo with Monkey, 25. Admission is $5 for adults 1938 and $2 students/children. Admission is free to South Shore Arts Members. South Shore Arts is located at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster. The tour, organized by Global Entertainment Properties in Los Angeles, is the only exhibit worldwide that follows the artist’s life and development from a hobbyist to a mature contemporary artist. During her lifetime, Kahlo created nearly 200 paintings, drawings and sketches, 55 of which are self-portraits. There will be over 100 hand-painted, licensed recreations of Kahlo’s paintings. These replicas are painted by master artists and licensed by Banco de Mexico Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo Museums Trust/VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2008. The paintings are in original size and original materials and handpainted in the same style in which Kahlo painted them. A replication of one of Kahlo’s most famous works, The Two Fridas, will be included in the exhibit as well as a hand-made dress and earrings she wore, which were a gift from Picasso. Also on display will be hand-woven and embroidered

Someday there will be more people getting off at Miller Beach than Chicago.” Though the latter might sound hyperbolic, Rogge is quick to point out that history shows how trains and the South Shore brought people to Miller starting in the late 1800s. It was an introduction to the beaches and dunes which propelled Miller Beach from a sleepy backwater to a tourist boom. “A transit-oriented development at Lake Station creates jobs and brings people to Miller,” says Rogge, noting that the Miller Beach Arts & Creative District is having great success in using art and culture as a catalyst for both economic development and the regeneration of the city. “We have new businesses, new restaurants,” he says, handing me a brochure which shows that an investment in a transitoriented development would generate 405 construction jobs, 100 full time jobs and 250 part time jobs in Miller Beach alone plus be a spur for businesses to move to the area. “Overall, it capitalizes on the $28 million that the Regional Development Authority invested in renovating Marquette Park,”

ne of his many current projects is to create a Transit-Oriented Development in the City of Gary, a move that helped save the train station depot in Miller Beach from destruction. The Miller Beach station is part of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation (NICTD) South Shore Line, which connects Chicago to South Bend. For Gary residents that means the opportunity to board the South Shore at three different locations—a station on Lake Street in Miller Beach within the burgeoning Miller Beach Arts & Creative District, the Gary Metro Station across from City Hall and the Genesis Convention Center and the Gary flag station near the Gary/Chicago International Airport. Forty percent of Gary’s population lives around the Metro and Miller Beach stations, says Rogge. Sounds good, so what’s the problem? Let’s put it in a nutshell. About four years ago the NICTD hired American StructurePoint, an Indianapolis based company which provides such services as architecture, civil engineering, structural engineering and transportation, to study ways of increasing revenue opportunities by improving commuter rail service along the South Shore Line. The way to do that, the report said, was to eliminate both the Gary Metro and Miller Beach stations and build the Gateway Station east of the I-65 interchange where only nine

The citizens of Miller Beach are always saving something, and George Rogge is often one of the ringleaders. • Rogge certainly typifies Miller Beach activism. Involved in a plethora of activities such as having served as the president of both the Miller Citizens Corporation (MCC) and the Society for the Restoration of the Gary Bathing Beach Aquatorium and Octave Chanute’s Place in History, Inc., director of the Miller Area Business Association and the Gary City Wide Development Corporation.

says Rogge, who lives in a house poised on the highest ground in Miller Beach with endless glass windows and views of Lake Michigan. Currently the Miller Beach Garden Club plants flowers around Marquette Park every year and also decorates it for the holidays. Rogge says his job is weeding the area around the station. “But this is just a blip on the screen,” Rogge tells me about the transit-oriented development plans. After all, he was a major force in fighting the implementation of drastically high increases of property taxes in Gary to the point that he got an apartment with a view of the State House in Indianapolis. Then there was the time when he provided the perfect sound bite which went viral in the preInternet day when asked by a CNN reporter, in town to do a story on Gary’s high crime rate in 1995, what was behind the high rate of crime in Gary. “I said the problem is that you can get a pizza here faster than a policeman,” recalls Rogge. “After that Governor Bayh sent 65 state policemen up here and they arrested some 3000 people. They even had a special prosecutor.” Born and raised in Gary, Rogge graduated from Lew Wallace High School in 1965 and Indiana State University in 1969. He returned home to work at the family business, founded in 1923. “My dad suggested that I join one of the city’s civic organizations,” says Rogge who joined the Jaycees and within a week was head of the membership committee. His work earned the local Jaycees chapter third place at the national Jaycee convention and it ignited Rogge’s determination to do what he could for the betterment of Gary. Historic preservation is also one of his interests as well. He bought the Boyd House, the oldest home in Merrillville, to house his insurance company—only the second owner since it was built. “The owner’s granddaughter was born there and died there at age 94,” he says noting that it needed work as nothing much had been done in terms of upkeep and repairs since the 1940s and had also stood vacant for two years before purchasing it. “It still had a coal furnace.” Rogge was also one of the founders of the Society for the Restoration of the Gary Bathing Beach Aquatorium and Octave Chanute’s Place in History, Inc. Before preservation efforts began, the historic aquatorium was boarded up and slowly filling with sand after decades of neglect.

n 1991, the society began its multi-million dollar project to restore the Aquatorium and transform it into a monument to early aviator Octave Chanute, whose historic test flights soared off the sand dunes just west of the building. “All that began when I was president of the Park Board,” says Rogge. “I got into it when I found this rock by the old bathing house which talked about what he had done. I thought, ‘this is it.’” Two decades later, extensive restoration and reconstruction has been completed, as well as new construction built to honor Chanute and those other storied aviation pioneers, the Tuskeegee Airmen. Today, the Aquatorium hosts private events in its unique and picturesque setting and is once more the jewel in the crown of Marquette Park’s historic lakefront.

Sparkle and Shine Mid-century modern brings glitz and nostalgia

f you’re looking for a new way to decorate your home for Christmas, adding mid-century modern décor is a fun, easy way to spice up your holiday look, design experts say. The time period began in the 1950s, after World War II ended and people were in a more festive mood than in recent years, says Jan Levan, an interior designer and co-owner of Ambiance: Your Home. Your Story. During that time, big department stores like Macy’s and Marshall Field’s started making huge, festive Christmas displays, she says. “It was definitely a better, more fun time than it had been before,” she says. “Even though the furniture was more simple and clean during that time, at the holidays, it was much more glitzy.” Gwen DeBrun is founder and director of Bayberry Cottage in South Haven, Michigan. The store opened in 2001 and offers unique, affordable furniture and accessories. DeBrun says using retro décor could look either modern or kitschy. “It depends on how you pull it all together,” DeBrun says. “Bringing out the aluminum Christmas tree will definitely move you towards kitschy, but really, what better time than the holidays to spread some cheer with a funky holiday style?” Karen Maravilla, owner of It’s Just Serendipity in Hammond, stocks many mid-century holiday decor items in her vintage shop. Maravilla says these vintage decorations can bring back warm holiday memories. “All the bright shiny decorations brought sparkle to the holidays and bring back really great memories,” she says. “I think it takes you back to a time of having a very happy, safe holiday season.” Carolyn DeYoung, an interior designer with St. John, Indiana, based DeYoung Interiors, says the time period was full of sparkle and color. “The mid-century look was often a bit over-the-top with glitter and color and what better time to be over-the-top than the holiday season?” she says.

[Above] Vintage holiday ornaments bring retro sparkle at It’s Just Serendipity. [Below] Retro glass tumblers in caddy and holiday glass tray are waiting for a holiday party at It’s Just Serendipity.

No matter what, DeBrun suggests exercising restraint. “Modern minimalism is a kissing cousin of mid-century modern, so keep that in mind as your inner decorator heads back to days gone by,” she says. DeYoung agrees. “In the spirit of mid-century modern, less is often more, so try not to go overboard with the number of pieces and colors involved,” she says. “Have fun with the colors and styles, and get into the holiday spirit.” -CARRIE RODOVICH

19

that look. “If you head to your local antiques dealer, you’re likely to find cool, retro ornaments, unique garland and shiny trees,” she says. Jessie Cundiff, owner of Hoity Toity vintage store in Michigan City, says these retro-chic items fly off the shelves each holiday season. “People are snatching them up,” he says. “We get comments that it reminds them of their grandparents, so people are really seeking it out, like the foil trees and color wheels. Whatever we can find, people are snatching it up.” In addition to these well-known decor items, shoppers can find unique gifts to go along with the mid-century holiday theme. “We have awesome mid century gifts and toys,” he says. “We recently cleaned out an attic full of mid century Christmas things. A family from the city always celebrated Christmas at their beach house, and they never took any of the holiday items back to the city with them. It was all well preserved in the attic.”

DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015

She says it was possible to incorporate a fun look by using non-traditional Christmas colors including bright green, aqua blue or pink in ornaments, wrapping paper and table toppers. “We have the makings for an entirely aqua blue, white and silver tree here at DeYoungs, and are impatiently waiting to set it up,” she says. She says metallics are also a popular trend, and you could incorporate silver, gold and copper into accessories, as well. “Anything that adds shine and shimmer to a space feels appropriate during the holiday season,” she says. “Often, we don’t think of white being a true color to add into our decorating scheme, but it’s a popular color of mid-century design and can be used to create a fresh look for the holiday.” Using real vintage items can also integrate well with contemporary holiday decor. “Not only is it vintage, it still looks very modern,” says Karen Maravilla of It’s Just Serendipity in Hammond. “That’s why some of the younger generation Lighted churches that might not such as these are a remember that familiar retro sight time period directly along with other mid-century decor like it, because it at Hoity Toity in still looks modern Michigan City. and sleek, and I think they really like that.” DeBrun says the mid-century modern holiday look would be fun and not fussy. She suggests choosing bold colors and strong graphic patterns for your ornaments. “That will definitely add interesting detail to your tree, and they are the hallmark of mid-century decorating,” she says. “Be sure to put away those twinkly white lights and go for the large, multicolored lights.” DeBrun says glass ornaments were a staple in the 1950s and 1960s, and Radko now makes ornaments that mimic

How to prepare your plumbing for winter

W

inter is just around the corner, and that cold weather can wreak havoc on the pipes in your home – making the season even more miserable. Terry Cheek of TLC Plumbing Inc. in Griffith says not to worry – there are steps you can take right now to make sure your home’s plumbing survives even the harshest of winters. Cold weather months can not only cause pipes to freeze, but can also freeze partially plugged sewers. Sump pump discharge lines can freeze, and a home’s hot water tank must work harder in the cold weather months because the incoming water temperature is colder, Cheek said. And don’t forget about your home’s outside hose bibb – that can freeze, too. Before temperatures start to dip, Cheek recommends insulating pipes in the crawl space or on outside walls, and removing the garden hose from the hose bibb. “Drain your hose to store in a shed, garage or basement, then make sure the interior shut off valve is closed,” he said. Flush the hot water tank to remove sediment so that the hot water tank can work more

magine the romance of horseback riding in winter: a brisk, clear morning, being the first to set out on fresh trail of untouched snow, the crunch of snow under the horse’s hooves, and the exhilaration as you leave the first prints of the day in the sparkling path of white behind you. But don’t get too attached to this picture. While winter is a great time to think about beginning riding lessons and build riding skills and horsemanship, novice equestrians are advised to learn their basic skills indoors during the colder months. Most stables provide indoor tracks and arenas for beginning to advanced lessons, so the novice can use the winter months to prepare to hit the ground running (literally) in the spring. Before committing to horse ownership and the year-round equestrian lifestyle, experts suggest that beginners start with lessons as a way to gage their level of interest and potential for commitment to ownership.

Novices can also learn about riding styles, types of horses and personalities, in order to find what best suits their own personality and interests. Interim lease programs are also available that allow weekly riding options as an initial opportunity to connect with one horse over time. Equestrianism does not have to be a solo activity—it’s also a great opportunity to make friends who share a rider’s love of horses. Robust communities of horse lovers can be found at every stable. Pleasant Heights Stables, a 100-acre deluxe equestrian facility in LaPorte, Indiana, offers full board and day care throughout the winter, in addition to a variety of custom care packages. Diane Thalmann, part-owner of Pleasant Heights Stables, says new riders are always welcome. Some of their recent beginners range from 3 to 70 years old. “Instead of ‘ladies who lunch,’ at PHS we have ‘ladies who ride,’” says Thalmann. The group was first formed

The biggest dangers for horses and for humans in sub-zero temperatures are exposure to the cold and difficulty breathing in cold air for long periods. This type of weather can be very hazardous to a horse’s health and can lead to colic, which is the number one killer of horses.” During winter months, the horse’s body will adapt through physiological that allow them to adjust to falling temperatures by growing a thicker and fuller coat. Locally, Culver equestrians can be seen at various festivals, including Popcorn Fest in Valparaiso. hoosing the right barn can also support the horse’s health. Winter boarding options can range from full care to limited care, depending on the facility. “At Transitions, we run a full service facility so that horse owners don’t have to worry about the day to day care of their horses,” says Ashcraft. “We take on this battle with mother nature on their behalf.” Horses who board at Pleasant Heights Stables benefit from access to an indoor lighted arena, heated barn and wash stalls, riding trails, pastures, locally produced hay and expert trainers. “A horse is like an athlete,” says Thalmann, “and even though there are times during winter when weather can be prohibitive, there are a variety of ways that the horse can stay in good shape and remain in training throughout the winter season.” For more content, please VisitShoreMagazine.com

If you get gingerbread here or Bavarian cream or whatever else was first made here, you getting it the same way it’s always been made.” What Bit of Swiss is doing differently this year is partnering with the Krasl Art Center on Lake Boulevard in St. Joseph to make a gingerbread house that is about 3-feet long and 18-inches high that looks like the art center and will be on display there this holiday season. Decorated with royal icing, Bit of Swiss bakers will work on replicating the Krasl’s Chihuly glass including the artist’s fantastical sculpture that hangs in the foyer and other works— the center is also well-known for its outdoor art as well as inside galleries. But the Krasl isn’t the only gingerbread replica of St. Joseph’s arts, cultural and tourist centers slated to be displayed along Lake Boulevard which runs along the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan and the lighthouse marking the flow of the St. Joseph River into the lake as well as those below the bluff. “I invited my peers to make likenesses such as The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center, St. Joseph Today, Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library and Curious Kid’s Museum,” says Ali Hansen, executive

When Hans Kottman first came to America to make pastries and breads at what was then the grand Whitcomb Hotel overlooking Lake Michigan in downtown St. Joseph, he brought with him a recipe for gingerbread from the years he’d spent working as a baker in Austria. Kottman, at the instigation of Emil Tosi’s, next opened the Bit of Swiss Bakery next to Tosi’s Restaurant in Stevensville.

You can feel like royalty in such rooms as the King Arthur Suite. Sweet! Our goal is for you to come here and relax—go for a walk, have a cup of tea.” You can check in, have dinner at the inn, then have a couples’ massage and or a facial, and enjoy your fireplace and double-size whirlpool, all in your own room. There are six massage therapists on staff. Upcoming: three spa treatment rooms for guests who prefer services outside of their rooms. hank you, second-century B.C. Romans. They set the good example way back then, soaking in baths and even enjoying nearby amenities like snack bars, shops, and theaters. Fast forward to 1326 in—wait for it—Spa, Belgium, where a fellow declared himself cured after soaking in the iron-rich waters, then opened up a spa of sorts. By the 1800s the Swiss offered private resorts for the wealthy, and in Saratoga, N.Y., “taking the waters” in the hot sulfur spa there became the latest, if not the best-smelling, health getaway. The notion of healing waters got another boost in 1880 in Excelsior Springs, Mo., where a farmer’s daughter recovered from tuberculosis after drinking and bathing in the town’s spring water. Today the Elms Hotel & Spa there welcomes guests. As cold winds blow and skin begins to feel the rigors of winter in the heartland, we’re lucky enough to have relaxing spa stays here—without the sulfur. In Michigan City, Spa Blu Tower at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa wants to know, “How may we enliven your spirit?”, says Peaches McCahill, spa director. “We try to be creatively passionate in our commitment to capture the essence of the spa blu experience.” Why “blu”? McCahill explains the blu refers to adjacent Lake Michigan, where “The blue of the tower windows reflects the many beautiful blue tones of the water.” Inside, guests rejuvenate in style in the 10,000-squarefoot facility. Blu let’s get specific. Pumpkin is the new blueberry for facials, “an exfoliating treatment that’s loaded with important antioxidants, beta carotene and rich in vitamin C, to improve skin texture and tone.” spa blu treatments range from facials to body wraps to massages and more. There are steam rooms, experiential showers, and whirlpools highlighted by water walls. Guests can relax with infused beverages, fruit, snacks and soothing music, with each guests’ experience customized. Imagine indulgences like the blu’s chaser, which combines Swedish and Asian-inspired techniques designed to restore the body and spirit’s harmony and balance. Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, amid rolling countryside and pristine lakes, is upscale yet warm. Dawn Olsen, spa manager, says it’s essential for guests to receive a warm welcome when they arrive. Well, yes, it is. “The staff has to be properly educated,” she says, schooled in caring for guests, “making them feel relaxed and well taken care of.” Olsen notes that the spa industry has changed rapidly in recent years. “People are more savvy now about spas. The media has made them more aware of standards that should be met, from sanitation to education. Here at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, we were already good at what we do. Now we also can answer our guests’ questions (about healthful treatments).” But the ambiance is everything, she adds. “Guests are immersed in a sensory experience when they walk in—there’s music, wonderful aromas, a nice warm fireplace—all that lets them get away from day-to-day

is not the first such moment. Since the age of 3 she has practiced dance at the Indiana Ballet Theatre (IBT), the brainchild of founder and director Gloria Tuohy. And while dance is in Tuohy’s heart and soul and directs the course of her career, Tuohy is realistic about expectations—hers and her dancers’. Ballerina Kristy Victor, for example, is a full-time oncology nurse. Tuohy explains, “Ballerinas have to be very versatile, to be able teach or to do some other work in addition to dance, because many can’t just survive on ballet alone.” She adds that much of today’s choreography is upbeat and contemporary, leaving even fewer roles available for ballet dancers. “There are a lot of dancers who want to be ballerinas, so it’s really important to have good training. If the production is only looking for three dancers, you want stand out in the competition,” Tuohy says. Dancers are constantly auditioning, “In between, they have to live somehow.” Tuohy says some of her dancers go to college, then come back to teach at IBT. Victor is one of them. She may not be a typical example, however, since her schedule would be daunting to many. In addition to her full-time job administering chemo and care to patients and teaching Mondays and Tuesdays at IBT in addition to lessons and performances, Victor is also a sales director for

She hears it as she’s waiting in the wings: the murmuring of the audience, the sudden rustle of settling in as the house lights dim. In the breathless quiet before the curtain rises, her heart races a little even as she wills it to be still. ¶ The music from the pit swells, the curtain rises. A deep breath, arms poised, she rises en pointe and advances featherlight to the footlights. ¶ It is the moment ballerina Kristy Victor has dreamed of for most of her 28 years.

INDIANA BALLET THEATRE: CREATING MAGICAL MOMENTS The Indiana Ballet Theatre (IBT) is the only ballet company of its caliber in Northwest Indiana, says founder and director Gloria Tuohy, MDE. And high-caliber training and performance matter, says Tuohy. Despite the odds against joining a professional dance company, some of her students have joined companies including the Joffrey Ballet. Others teach or choreograph, including Broadway productions. IBT is the only dance company in northwest Indiana to bring more than nine full-length classical ballets to local residents, including Swan Lake, Peter Pan, and Cinderella, all under Tuohy’s direction. In May 2013 the Indiana Coalition for the Arts/Indiana Arts Commission Award went to Tuohy, herself a dancer who has performed with the Boston Ballet in London. Her devotion began when she took her 3-yearold daughter to a studio and was horrified. “If they did well, they went to the top of a list, if not, to the bottom. This is awful, teaching little children to be competitive. They paid pennies for doing a cartwheel well. They gave the French names for ballet moves, at the age of three! I asked a few friends, if I open up (a dance class) in my basement, would you come?” That was 35 years ago. Now Tuohy’s daughter, Amanda Touhy-Fuller, is IBT’s Gloria Tuohy Modern/Contemporary Artistic Director, CDE. Says dancer Kristy Victor, “Mrs. Tuohy is a wonderful lady, one of the sweetest, and I just love her. I have her to thank for most of my training in the art of ballet.” The IBT has studios in DeMotte, Ind., and Merrillville, Ind., but soon will have a permanent home in a venerable building. Donated to IBT by the Lake County Commissioners, it’s the last nurses’ home in the country that has not been destroyed or renovated. “I’m excited, but it’s also a huge undertaking. I have to raise $3.5 million—and we’re at $32,000 now,” says Tuohy. The school numbers about 230, in all dance disciplines. Community outreach includes teaching children from the region at their schools to perform in a special production at IBT. And for dancers who want to go to New York, Tuohy tries to help them figure out how to meet the expense. IBT also has a strong presence in the modern dance world, producing yearly shows to sold-out audiences.

Mary Kay cosmetics; is a head cheerleader for National Cheerleaders Association; and dresses the part of a princess for Princess Parties. “I have quite an active schedule,” says a cheerful Victor, who lives in Crown Point, Ind. “It’s long hours, but it’s all work I enjoy. Dancing is my real passion, my very favorite thing to do.” Victor is also in IBT’s sixmember Chamber Ballet, whose members receive a stipend. It’s a challenge finding time for rehearsals, such as for her role in the upcoming The Nutcracker Dec. 3 and 4 at the Radisson Star Plaza. “But when I step onstage, I want to know I’m at my best, to be part of a wonderful experience for people.” Married for a year in August, Victor says husband Conrad is always supportive and comes to all her performances.

S

ara Eichmeier, 17 years old, knows what it is to get ready for a performance. “I think my family gets a little flustered by the amount of time it takes to prepare for a production, but they’re very happy I’ve found something I’m so passionate about.” She found that passion early. Her grandmother tells her that even at 2 years old, Sara stood before a mirror and danced, so lessons began when she was 3. From then until she was 10 it was ballet, “mostly because (the IBT instructors) like to give you a really strong core in ballet technique; it helps you branch out in other styles.” At 10, she started modern ballet; at 13, jazz. Sara dreams of becoming a ballerina as a career. She wants to graduate high school with academic honors, then go right into a ballet company, but is realistic enough to realize she needs to go to college, with Butler University her first choice. If for some reason performing dance doesn’t work out as a career, Sara says she’d want to teach it. She’s already teaching ballet to little ones at IBT and loves it. For now, “When you’re up on stage in front of all those people performing ballet, you follow the role and it helps you enter a new world.

You’re living a cool double life, on stage and off stage.” Off stage she’s a Valparaiso High School student who sacrifices an active social life for dance. Every day except Friday (yes, Sundays, too), she’s at IBT. “The best part about training is how much responsibility and selfcontrol you learn. Ballet is a very strict profession. In the long run, it helps you be the best person you can be.” For Sara the biggest challenge is the discipline. “The audience can’t know if you’re in pain or tired or sick. If something goes wrong with the music you just have to roll with it and keep playing your part. You have to maintain that composure.” Her favorite role so far was in Sleeping Beauty. “As a kid, I always dreamed of playing the part of Aurora.” Did the reality measure up to her expectation? The teenager giggles. “Yes, it’s beautiful … you feel like a princess when you’re performing.” In ballet, even princesses must be strong. “It takes endurance to hold yourself up on your toes. People think about the flexibility, to be able to put your foot at your head. But to hold it there, the strength is harder than the flexibility.” Victor agrees. “(My age of) 28 is young, but you have to keep up on a daily basis. When a performance comes around, I’ll go in before work to get the rehearsal time in. If I can’t make it to the dance studio, I go to the gym.” In her busy schedule there’s been no lack of friendships. “At IBT I’ve made a lot of great friends over the years. With two of them, Bailee Serocinki and Libby Evenhouse, we’ve formed a wonderful bond. They’ll be dancing with me in Nutcracker.” Sara will perform as well. “For Nutcracker, there are long hours, at the studio from 9 a.m. to 5 at night, so any kind of social life is kind of gone. Then there’s the expense—different pointe shoes, which are very expensive, and the clothes. “But if you really love something you’ll do whatever it takes.”

Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter made me curious because of its longevity on the bestseller list and after I read it and discovered the sensuality of the geography, the true resonance and meaning of the word “ruins,”— especially in this context with its celebrity overtones—and the triumph of spiritual love no matter how perverse things that happen in love’s name seem to get. The story is a fantastical antidote to jadedness. Much like Walter’s Financial Lives of the Poets, which tells the story of an unemployed former reporter with a failed start-up web site, about to lose his home, his spouse and everything but his sense of humor. The protagonist’s inability to make a good decision is almost staggering, but hasn’t everybody been through a period so awful that you thought it couldn’t get worse, until it did? Also don’t miss Walter’s first book, Ruby Ridge: The Truth and Tragedy of the Randy Weaver Family, a non-fiction story that explains much about Big Sky Country. How to Cook Everything and How to Cook Everything Vegetarian is so valuable even to somebody like me, a non-cook for tons of reasons. Though one or the other of the boxed set are always open on the kitchen counter, I also keep the app on

was an ability to convey his emotional world in all its demonic tenderness and project it through physical actors onstage can never be duplicated. But Lahr, whose work as a theater critic for The New Yorker is wellknown, steps outside the realm of the deeply researched biography into the nether-land of connected dots between memoirs, novels, letter collections of others including Tennessee Williams own, also Elia Kazan, Gore Vidal, Arthur Miller, Paul Bowles, Maureen Stapleton and others he corresponded and spoke with frequently. That is the uniqueness of playwrights—everything is on display. The books of James McBride are another kind of revelation, beginning with the most recent National Book Award Winner Good Lord Bird, the narrative of the pre-Civil War endgame of famous anti-slavery lunatic John Brown as told through the eyes of a young runaway slave boy disguised as a girl primarily for reasons of safety. The look at the tumult and division of the country during that time it is not hard to see the hell that was soon unleashed. Not to mention the legacy that has stubbornly remained with our country for so long. But the story is still a pure and simple adventure, even though you kind of know the hero is going to make it somehow. Then it was a treat to go back and find the beginning of this wonderful writer in another novel Song Yet Sung and where he began in The Color of Water, his autobiographical story about his courageous and unusual white mother, who explained her skin as transparent. The Roosevelts touched on two other historical biographies I was reading this year. The first one was Lawrence in Arabia by Scott Anderson, a story in its most famous incarnation was an Oscar-winning movie starring Peter O’Toole, and Robert Caro’s Pulitizer-Prize-winning biography of Robert Moses (The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York). Moses’ story was contemporaneous with FDR at certain critical junctures of imagining and building the roads and parkways that extend from the most populous city in the US and up into the further reaches of the state. Caro wrote his book for 13 years and in the process almost sacrificed everything including the house he owned to buy the time to finish it. But the risk was probably worth the reward, and an achievement that brought him to his life’s work since—a multi-part study of Lyndon Johnson. Lawrence in Arabia’s story may be more familiar but stand out for its relevance to the continuing defiant and baffling world of Middle Eastern politics. Despite a century of progress including cities, population growth, global financial events and agricultural innovation, the psychological barriers, social inequality and a resistance to anything new that quickly becomes extreme have been unable to move the dial much since World War I. John Lahr’s psycho-bio Tennessee Williams was a late entry to my personal best-of-the-year books and most surprising especially if you have never seen a Williams’s plays performed or have watched any filmed version in recently. Most baby boomers were hyper-aware of Williams when we were children. The subtitle of the book, Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh, means exactly what you think. Tennessee Williams’ genius

my phone. Finding out what spices can perk up fish without overpowering the fresh flavor, how to make your own hummus, how to cut up a cabbage or truly appreciate a cauliflower, the grocery list for a two-person meal that really is a meal. This became a necessity when a relative had to go on a low-iodine diet; I consulted a web site for the broad outline of what to plan and prepare but it was Mark Bittman’s books that worked for me with recipes including a vegan, low-sodium, glutenfree version of blueberry muffins that I can feed to my loved ones without a moment’s guilt. My pleasures aren’t guilt-free these days, but nor are they as guilty as they once were. Everything is saturated with pseudobiographic, quick-hit hot celebrity star drama tidbits that I thoroughly enjoyed reading the highlyresearched Michael Jordan: The Life by Roland Lazenby. This is not the tabloid version of anything, and gambling and other bad habits are not glossed over, although not particularly focused on either. Not surprisingly the heroine of Michael’s story is his mother Delores, who made careful choices and good decisions at critical junctures, whose belief that her son could do anything proved so often to be true. Navigating superstardom in professional sports has never been more difficult and there are so many pitfalls. Although I have always thought of Michael Jordan as a phenomenon and a certain kind of genius, I learned a great deal about a game that I thought I already understood. But the book is an equally good instruction manual on the care and rearing of teen-age athletes and the value of coaches who frankly care more about kids than they do about winning. And these folks care about winning an awful lot. If you managed to catch Ken Burns’ series on The Roosevelts: Teddy, Franklin

EXTRAORDINARY VINTAGES FOR HOLIDAY GATHERINGS Words by Jane Ammeson • Photography by Tony V. Martin

ntertaining is an important part of the holiday season and when planning gatherings for friends and families there’s more than the main course and side dishes. Also important is selecting the right wines to add to the holiday spirits. “Our St. Julian Reserve Riesling meets the palate of the dry wine drinkers as well as the sweet,” says Nancie Oxley, wine maker at St. Julian Winery, the oldest winery in the state of Michigan. “It’s food friendly and a wonderful wine to enjoy as a sipper. The 2013 vintage just won the Best of the East vs. West, being out Riesling’s from Oregon, Washington and New York.” It also goes well, continues Oxley with Asian dishes, fresh fruit, sausages, cold cuts, dips, canapés, blue-veined cheese and sushi. “This Riesling seems crisp and light,” she says, “yet packs intense flavors of super ripe peach, mango, lemon zest and mineral. It’s literally like liquid fruit.” Tabor Hill Winery and Restaurant in Baroda, Michigan, suggests serving their Lake Michigan Shore Riesling, its fruit-driven aromas redolent of ripe, juicy apple, peach and mango, with such foods as crab, fresh fruit, poultry, mild cheeses, Asian dishes and the restaurant’s signature dish raspberry chicken. At Shady Creek Vineyards in Michigan City, Sue Anderson, says she likes to pair their dry or semisweet Rieslings with ham. “I particularly like a dry Riesling with the taste of salty cured meats,” says Anderson who owns the winery with her husband Tim. “We also have a great variety of dry reds which are great for Christmas dinner offerings like roast beef.” St. Julian’s Gunga Din Hard Cider has distinct aromas of Golden Delicious and Gala apples and just a touch of sweetness that works well with dishes like quiche Lorraine, creamy risotto, ham, chicken, roast pork and Camembert cheese. Gunga Din is great in such cocktails as Baked Apple, along with cinnamon schnapps or the winery’s A&G Apple Brandy and an Apple d’Or Sour St. Julian’s Cream d’Or, Gunga Din and sour mix. Jennifer Walker at Anderson’s Winery in Valparaiso suggests accompanying the traditional Thanksgiving turkey with their Vineyard Blush made with Catawba grapes which were the first widely planted wine grape in North America. Their Estate-bottled Marechal Foch goes well with Italian dishes. Because of its cherry, strawberry and cedar bouquet with a rich balance of dark fruit and a lightly oaked, tannic finish, Tabor Hill’s estategrown Lake Michigan Shore Pinot Noir pairs perfectly with grilled seafood and wild game dishes. Pairing wines with desserts can be somewhat tricky because a combination of too much

Tabor Hill’s Ice Wine Vidal Blanc offers intense, vibrant fruit flavors and aromas balanced with fine acidity for a lasting smooth finish. 2013 Braganini St. Julien Winery Reserve Porpetto, an Iced Traminette, is accented by rich flavors of candied peaches and honeyed lychee. “Our wine maker tends to be a little edgy with his ice wines,” says Walker. “Typically ice wines are white, but our Red Diamond is a red and is great as an after dinner cordial as is our Porter County Port which is 19 percent alcohol.” Anderson’s also makes a limited edition dessert wine called Remember Me with an alcohol content of 24 percent. “We make only 150 bottles of that at a time and it’s never quite the same each time as our wine maker doesn’t use a Tabor Hill Winery recipe,” says Walker. “We now have five and the winemaker sets some aside so that we can offer them together as a package.” Feta, goat and blue-veined cheeses (as well as desserts like chocolate truffles and apple pie) are wonderful matches with St. Julian’s 2013 with 1 teaspoon of St. Julien Winery Braganini Reserve Passito with its aromas of apricot butter, superfine sugar and pistachio nuts and raisin with delicate strawberry flavors. 3 ounces of club soda “The delicate acidity is complimented by the long, apricotcreates a warm and pineapple marmalade and warm honey finish,” says Oxley. satisfying Cream Sherry “The traditional way to make Passito involves picking grape Cobbler Shady Creek’s Red Horizon makes a fantastic mulled bunches and placing them on a “mat” in the sun to dehydrate. wine says Anderson. teiner Homes has partnered with Marina Shores at Dune Harbor to bring all new single-family homes plus one and two-story condominiums in a one-of-a-kind maintenance-free waterfront community loaded with resort-style amenities. Marina Shores will offer an excellent place to be year around due to its great location and dedicated staff. Located along Highway 12, directly across from the Ogden Dunes South Shore line stop, which provides convenient service to downtown Chicago, Marina Shores is an exclusive development with plans for just 225 homes/condos with 255 boat slips that provide easy Lake Michigan access. Steiner Homes plans to bring their distinctive style and sophisticated craftsmanship to Marina Shores with new models coming soon, including Nantucket and Newport Waterfront Condominium homes in eight-unit buildings. Single-family home lots start in the $60s and buyers have the option of customizing an existing plan or starting from scratch. These homes will provide a unique style that is both sophisticated and affordable. “We know building a home can be a big task, and we do our best to make it as stress-free as possible,” Dan Steiner said. “A lot of customers walk through our homes and can’t believe what all they get for the price. We do our best to get competitive pricing so they can get more for their money, but, in the end, it’s our exceptional standards that really set us apart when it comes to building a home to spend the rest of your life in.” “We are introducing completely new plans for Marina Shores,” Dave Gring, who has been Director of Sales at Steiner Homes for 10 years, added. “Everything we’re doing at Marina Shores is in keeping with our style—a bit of east coast shore and arts and crafts, just on lots that are a little different size than what’s typical in other Northwest Indiana communities—a bit more narrow and deeper. Our buyers typically spend a great deal of time on the Internet searching for what they really want in a new home. It’s our job to help them STEINER HOMES make their vision come to life, and 6085 S Dune Harbor Drive that means we often incorporate Portage, Ind. quite a few unique amenities and 219.916.3744 steinerhomesltd.com products beyond the norm.”

The seeming endless rows of windows fronting the Miller Beach home of Tom and Terry Cera overlook the dunes and lakeshore. Note the telescope in the window of the second floor master bedroom. Tom Cera, who works in the metal industry, likes to watch the ore boats as they travel Lake Michigan’s southern coast.

HOLIDAYS

“Holidays for us are very traditional,” says Terry Cera of Miller Beach. “Our children come home for Christmas and our families get together. We’re now not only into the next generation but the generation after that.” WORDS BY JANE AMMESON • PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY V. MARTIN

For Terry and her husband Tom, that means large gatherings of relatives coming together during the season. “It’s traditional for our family as Slovaks and Tom’s family being Italian to celebrate on Christmas Eve and we both come from large families,” says Terry who has five brothers and five sisters. “We’ve had 65 people here at one time,” says Tom. Entertaining as well as visits from their three grown children inspired the Ceras in the design of their beach home including a super large great room concept. Terry loves to cook and the combination of the kitchen, dining room and big living room are perfect for groups to gather in different spots (seated at the large granite island in the kitchen, at the dining room table or on the sofa and chairs in the living area with its wood burning fireplace) and still be all together. Not only are these areas spectacularly decorated for the holidays but the long line of large glass windows overlooking the outdoor deck, dune and shoreline, make for a stunning backdrop. [Above Terry and Tom Cera not “Even watching snowstorms is only collect wine, having just gorgeous,” says Terry. returned from a trip to some of the wine making areas of Europe, but After her autumn and also make their own with a focus Thanksgiving decorations are put on reds such as Sangiovese and away, Terry pulls out her holiday Zinfandel. The couple both grew up in Whiting where they also met but not until after high school. They lived in Schererville for 17 years and spent time in the summer at Lake Street Beach in Miller with their children swimming and jet skiing. “That’s how we got to know this area,” says Terry. “We grew up on Lake Michigan in Whiting so we understand the lake. And we really fell in love with the place.” The couple looked for houses and land over a period of a few years in Miller Beach, but nothing seemed quite right until a friend of Tom’s who worked with him in the steel industry told him about a lot he had for sale with a small cottage on it. “It was a tear down,” says Tom. “We knew that from the beginning.” They were also able to buy the lot next door giving them added privacy

The wood burning fireplace in the high ceilinged great room keeps the Cera home cozy when it’s snowing outside. The space above the fireplace where the large wreath hangs is—when the holidays are over—taken by a painting by a local artist. Supporting local artisans is important to the Ceras.

But they did a great job. After its completion, the 4,800-square-foot home won an award for steel designed homes. The Ceras like to mix the furniture that belonged to their parents such as the delicately hand-painted escritoire with its drawers and pull down desktop belonging to Tom’s mother that stands in the entryway as well as her china cabinet repurposed in part for electronics in a den that converts into a bedroom for their daughter when she visits, more contemporary furnishings as well as the Victorian style furniture which they bought for their home in Schererville and now used in the master bedroom. “At first we didn’t think it matched with the beach home setting,” says Terry. “But we liked it and now it doesn’t bother us at all.” Focusing on the water was forefront when designing the house says Tom noting that almost every room has a lake

view for maximum enjoyment. A small cozy space with big comfy chairs and a view of Lake Michigan, originally planned as a screened-in porch, was turned into a four season room. “We knew we wanted to sit here no matter the weather,” says Terry. Upstairs, the master bedroom provides a panoramic seascape with windows lining the north wall. “We get so much wildlife around here,” says Terry. “Foxes, deer and last winter there were coyotes on the ice floes who kept coming back to shore and going out again.” In keeping with his background in metal, Tom has a large telescope aimed at the lake for watching ore boats. There’s a fireplace in their bedroom and the master bath has a large tub with lakefront views as well. Outside beyond the large deck is a copper wood burning fire pit and a pathway the couple built that leads through the dunes a set of chairs overlooking the beach. Terry says one of their favorite activities is to walk the beach to the Dunes State Park and the National Lakeshore. Large glass vases contain the hundreds, if not thousands, of pieces of beach glass in an assortment of smooth soft colors they’ve collected from their walks. The Ceras like to buy local and use local. Tom mentions union builders constructed their home and the walls of the house have paintings by such area artists as Mitch Markovitz, Michelle Gordon and Jeffrey Baumgartner known for “One a Day, 30-in-30: Impressions of Miller” an endeavor to create 30 oil paintings in 30 locations in 30 days. “He didn’t paint our house for that but we had him do a painting of the front of the house, the beach side, for us,” says

Tom about one of the paintings in their great room. A few years back the couple took up wine making and now in their climate controlled wine cellar they have four barrels on wine fermenting as well as wines already bottled. They like reds and have made Sangiovese, Cabernet and a Chilean Zinfandel. Neighbors became interested and Tom says it’s like a co-op now of wine makers. “This was our blizzard project,” says Terry pointing to the wall of corks that they worked on during the winter. Beyond the beach, Tom and Terry Cera were drawn to Miller Beach because of the community and that only has increased with time. “We like the diversity and the friendliness,” says Tom. “We were welcomed from the beginning,” says Terry. “It has so much to offer and so much more happening every day.” For more content, please VisitShoreMagazine.com
