Have an Event to Remember at Villa Cesare

Y

ou know you’ve made a terrific choice for your special event when arriving guests want to linger in the entryway. Villa Cesare’s foyer has European elegance that tells your guests that this event is something to be remembered. In fact, it’s not unusual to find guests sitting in the foyer after dinner, visiting with friends and enjoying the warm and wonderful atmosphere. From the plush, beautifully arranged seating to the Italian paintings on the wall, the warmth, luxury and elegance of Villa Cesare can be felt throughout the facility. Planning is everything for your special occasion. Well-established in its present location for 20 years, Villa Cesare is famous for accommodating your tastes and needs. “Villa Cesare knows how important it is to choose just the right menu,” says manager Gino Baldin, “so our chef is happy to meet with you and custom-design the menu. We provide quality food, in abundance. And we’re proud of our service—we have a really top-notch waitstaff.” Menu options include providing individual choices for every guest, and also family-style meals, all prepared with the same expertise. You’ll find traditional home-style dishes, authentic Italian fare, and mouth-watering selections like the tender filet mignon and lobster tail. An amazing array of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres guarantees each guest will find a favorite—you may select from 22 choices in all. Truly important occasions belong here— your treasured memories of anniversary parties, graduation parties, bridal showers, weddings—any occasion when you want everything to be just right.

ROMA, VENEZIA AND PALERMO ROOMS “Villa Cesare’s larger rooms, the Roma and Venezia, are newly remodeled,” says Baldin. “They’re just beautiful—bright, spacious, beautifully coordinated.” The Roma, Venezia, and Palermo rooms will accommodate parties ranging from 200 to 800 guests. The setting of each room is inviting, with many windows featuring nicely appointed window treatments and beautiful lighting— so important for imparting a pleasing atmosphere. With the table presentation of linens, fine stemware and china, all placed to perfection, the combination of lovely décor

and tables creates an ambience your guests will remember long after the event. Plush carpeting adds to the elegance, too, and marble dance floors make dancing irresistible. The smaller, more intimate room, the Palermo, will accommodate 50 to 110. This beautifully appointed room is perfect for showers, birthdays, anniversaries, funeral luncheons, rehearsal dinners, small weddings, christenings, graduations and family reunions. Villa Cesare offers the extras that make your occasion easier to plan. Your event includes a champagne toast for the main table and two bottles of wine per table during dinner. Waitstaff will take care of cutting or wrapping the cake if you wish, and you may add your personal touch with chair covers. And now, the facility is 100 percent smoke-free.

VILLA CESARE IS WELCOMING The building is handicapped-accessible, with ramps leading from several areas of handicapped parking. The sizable parking lot is paved and very well lighted, and features islands planted with flowers, bushes and trees. The main entrance is enhanced by a canopy for protection from the weather and is complemented by a lovely fountain imported from Italy, as well as stone benches in a garden-like setting. At the south entrance to the parking lot is a large computerized sign announcing your event as your guests arrive!

OUTDOOR SPACES At the back of our building before a huge pond is situated a large, tastefully built, beautiful gazebo for brides who prefer to have the marriage performed in an outdoor natural setting, available at an extra charge. Villa Cesare staff have remained open to the needs of brides in this area by updating the

facility to accommodate the requests of local clientele for that memorable day.

For your convenience Visa and Mastercard are happily accepted. “We don’t add on a gratuity—but you know, our clients always leave a nice gratuity, so I guess we’re doing something right,” says Baldin with a big smile. “Another way we know we’re pleasing our guests—making the occasion memorable? Bridal showers will come back for a baby shower,” Baldin says. “That says a lot—it makes us feel so great to know we made their special occasion so wonderful.” Please do not hesitate to call us at 219.322.3011 or email us at info@villacesare.com in order to fully explore all the options available to you. Heather Eidson Photography “Every wedding has a unique story that unfolds as the day begins. There is a narrative with a plot and characters who set the stage for the beginning, middle and end. Every couple has a distinctive style all their own. Some want hours of portraits all over town. Others prefer candid photographs with every one of their out-of-town guests. Some want me to sneak photos of their camera-shy aunt. I keep their wishes in mind as I capture the moments that make up their day unobtrusively and honestly. Ciao Bella Offers Authentic Taste of Italy

photo [this page] TONY V. MARTIN

E

legance and ease—that’s what Giuseppe “Joe” Scalzo wants guests to experience at special events at his Ciao Bella restaurant. Echoing the Tuscan trattorias of his youth, Ciao Bella offers authentic Italian fare from family recipes reflecting different regions in Italy. “Having a place where people can share love and friendship over good food that’s prepared with experience and skill is something beautiful,” says Scalzo. “Ciao Bella translates to ‘Hello, beautiful,’ and is a reminder that the Mediterranean diet is one of the best in the world. Just good, authentic food made with love and passion.” Scalzo is pleased when he hears how much people are enjoying their experience at Ciao Bella. He had decided that Northwest Indiana was ready for the real thing in Italian cuisine—and Northwest Indiana has welcomed him with open arms, reveling in a menu unlike others in the region. Patrons are delighted with his new ideas for specialty dinners, including more of his grandmother’s recipes, made with fresh ingredients from the market and the chef’s experience and creativity. A newly expanded wine list makes for perfect pairings with the dishes, all at a reasonable price. Special occasions are made memorable with an elegant yet cozy atmosphere, superb dishes, and excellent service. “Our waitstaff is very professional,” says Scalzo. “They take one hundred percent care of our guests, and will do the same for your guests at your party or reception hosted here.” Scalzo himself makes sure that special occasions run smoothly. “A bride, for example—it can be a hectic day for her. We want to give her peace of mind, so she can enjoy her day.” He counts on catering coordinator Sam Zivanovic to make it all happen. “With our well-seasoned catering staff with 35 years of experience,” says Zivanovic, “the sky’s the limit,” with menus custom-designed for the event. “I spend a lot of time with the client to be sure I understand just what is wanted. I give them many choices, with dishes prepared for each individual guest.” You can hear the smile in his voice as he adds, “I’m very happy to be with Joe; it’s just a great experience.” That kind of appreciation is shared by CIAO BELLA all who enjoy a dinner or special occasion 1514 U.S. 41 here. first things first

KEEPING IT

Simple There was once a time when a wedding centerpiece could be mistaken for nothing else. Marked by towering roses and a cornucopia of flowers cascading from its sides, the wedding centerpiece of a booming economy was unmistakable in its indulgent glory. But, it was also unremarkable in many ways. Though it may have picked up the gentle pinks or crisp yellows of the wedding party, it did not, very often, have much to say about the bride and groom themselves. With wedding budgets feeling the pinch, a strange thing has happened. The traditional centerpiece has all but vanished—and taken with it the factory feeling of flowers of yore. What’s popped up in its place, says Rachel Ramos, an assistant planner at Events by September’s Bride in Holland, Michigan, is a more demure, delicate and decidedly personal centerpiece. “A lot of brides right now are bringing a lot of personal touches to centerpieces— an eclectic approach,” she says. “Like an assortment of glass vases—so no two tables look alike.” Ramos notes a recent wedding where the couple took pictures of their dog in customized looks and arranged them in the middle of the tables. Tia Vaupel, an event coordinator at Chic Events in Crown Point, has noticed much of the same with her brides.

78

ShorebrideOnline.com

“I’ve been seeing a lot of brides do more of a do-it-yourself centerpiece,” she says. “I think they do it to be a little more cost-efficient. That’s a way for them to get creative and save money at the same time.” While trinkets and baubles have made their way to the table—flowers haven’t totally disappeared. But no longer are they pruned and primped into an unnatural state of being. More and more brides are choosing to let simple flowers speak for themselves, says Tracy Park, the designer for Park Place Design. “I personally have seen a lot of centerpieces that have gone from big and extravagant to simplified,” she says, noting many brides are using Mason jars as vases. “It’s the whole reduce, reuse, recycle thing. Brides like to have a big part in doing some of the things themselves. With the economy the way it is, those big extravagant centerpieces aren’t in people’s budgets.” Park, who has seen a dramatic rise in the amount of barn weddings recently, says brides are going for a rustic, chic bohemian look. Many brides are choosing flowers that come directly from the field or flora that resemble branches. “Keep in mind that there are a lot of unique things you can do to express yourself. It doesn’t need to be something every other bride does,” Ramos says. “It’s your wedding. You come through in the way you decorate.” -Christy Bonstell

hoose the cozy atmosphere of Gino’s Steakhouse in Dyer, or the Merrillville Gino’s Steakhouse with the entryway waterfall—each offers the same fine dining experience. Directed by the chef from the famed Gino’s in Harvey, Illinois, superb dishes are served with finesse. Each standout steak is a prime cut prepared to your preference and the prime rib eye is aged in-house for 21 days. “We’re known for Gino’s Special Steak,” says owner Dean Frangos. “It’s a Filet Mignon topped with melted Roquefort Cheese and Marinated Peppers, just really delicious.” The gourmet menu includes appetizers of tender Calamari and Mushrooms stuffed with Spinach and Mascarpone Cheese; the Lobster Bisque “is a very popular selection,” says Frangos. Desserts, including Lemon-Basil Cheesecake and Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee, are all made in-house. Your dining experience is enhanced by the experienced waitstaff— Frangos is proud that some are from the original Gino’s. “Our managers ensure excellent service, and our waitstaff is so great, right down to the way they open a bottle of wine for you.” That kind of service makes Gino’s ideal for special-occasion groups—up to 100 at Dyer’s beautifully renovated house, up to 45 at Merrillville’s beautiful venue. “People don’t feel rushed here; we want them to be able to relax and enjoy a fine dining experience,” says Frangos. “If I sound proud of Gino’s, I really am. It’s great to keep that tradition of serving our patrons excellent food in a beautiful place.”

PLAN

thank you FOR BEING A FRIEND W Show your gratitude to bridesmaids and groomsmen with a gift

ith all the planning that goes into a wedding, it’s nice to have your best friends by your side each step of the way. Your bridesmaids share in your excitement when they see the ring, they go dress shopping, accompany you to bridal shows, give you their opinions when you need them, host your shower and bachelorette party, and are there as you say your vows. At the rehearsal dinner, it is customary to offer a gift to show your appreciation for being part of your wedding-planning journey. Jewelry is a common gift choice for bridesmaids. It is an item they’ll be able to use for years to come and will remind them of your special bond. It’s also a way to add uniformity to the wedding party if you give an identical necklace or earrings to be worn on the wedding day. Sarah Paulson with MichaelAngelos “The Event Company” in South Bend suggests giving a bracelet that can do double duty. “We have the capability of doing corsages on jewelry,” she says. The bracelet (she recommends rhinestones or pearl strands) can be given at the rehearsal dinner with a corsage attached to wear that

evening. Whereas a traditional wrist corsage would attach to elastic, this one would be placed on the bracelet and the jewelry would be worn by the attendant on the wedding day. For the men, Paulson says a “vintage-looking” boutonniere holder could serve the same purpose. It could be presented at the rehearsal dinner with a boutonniere and then placed on a suit for the wedding. “These pretty, metal, silver designer holders are like a little vase and could be passed down,” she says. For those who prefer to steer clear of jewelry and opt for something more personal, engraved items are a nice touch. “A pocket mirror can be engraved with their initial,” Paulson says. “For my wedding we gave shot glasses that were engraved with the wedding date and name of the person we gave it to.” Cassandra Mortimer of Lansing says a friend who recently got married gave her bridesmaids personalized overnight bags from the Thirty-One Company with wine and glasses inside. Stacy Senchalle of Chicago did follow tradition, giving jewelry to her wedding party, “but I have heard of giving iPod shuffles with songs that remind the bride and groom of the gift receiver already downloaded as a playlist,” she says. “I thought that was kind of cute.” When standing up in a less formal outdoor wedding, Diana Maanum of Lansing received a pair of leather flip-flops to wear that day. Three years later, she still wears them, and says it’s been one of her favorite attendant gifts. There’s also the option of giving memories rather than mementos. A group outing to a casino or winery, a spa day or a girls’ trip to Amish country or a lakeside bed and breakfast will provide wonderful memories and allow the wedding party to connect in a relaxed setting. -Carrie Steinweg

or most brides and grooms, their wedding makes them feel like a star for the day. Many are choosing to enhance that Hollywood magic with the new blockbusters of the wedding world, personalized movie posters. Online sites, a local graphic designer and eeven ven some photographers and videographers are starting to offer the movie posters, which often feature the couple in starring roles. These large-scale art projects most often include a personalized movie title, wedding date, and “credits”—typically the bridal party, parents and other key players. For weddings with a movie theme or held at a theater venue, the posters are a perfect addition. Other couples are attracted to them for their versatility and wow factor. The posters can be designed before the wedding, featuring engagement or other favorite pictures of the couples, and are often displayed at the bridal shower, rehearsal dinner or reception. They can also be used as save-the-date cards, invitations, thank-you notes, table centerpieces, programs and even as an image on a sheet cake. Other couples order their poster after the wedding and use photos from their wedding day. “There are very few things that you are able to keep from your wedding as so many things are rented,” says Rich Ramirez, a local movie poster artist. “A beautiful and one-of-a-kind keepsake like this is hard for most couples to pass up.” Ramirez, owner of Legacy Photo Design in Griffith (legacyphotodesign.com), is a photographer, artist and graphic designer. His CineMagic movie posters are his most popular item. Family members order them as gifts or couples order them for themselves because, Ramirez says, it’s something no one has ever seen before. “I think this is the draw for

82

most couples. Movie posters are such an iconic piece of Americana that to be able to star on your own movie poster, while at the same time commemorating such a wonderful event as your wedding, is a no-brainer for couples.” Newlywed Amy Reeves received one of Ramirez’s posters as a wedding shower gift. She says her favorite part about the gift is that it is one of a kind. “We are always looking for original art or furniture that we don’t see in other people’s houses and this definitely tops the charts. No one has this one, and we can pass this down for generations to come,” she says. The poster always attracts guests when they come into the media room of their home. “They love how real it looks and that everyone’s names are on it, even our wedding date.” Bride-to-be Heather Bonomo had Ramirez make her a movie poster to display at her engagement party in May 2010 and says she is now hooked. She plans to have another movie poster made featuring professional photos following her November 2011 wedding. “Our basement will be full of movie posters,” she says. She says that as long as the posters, which cost $200, remain reasonably priced, their popularity will continue to grow. “When I received it, I was stunned. Everyone at the party loved it,” she says. Guests thanked her for giving them a new idea for upcoming weddings, and three brides-to-be who saw her poster have already ordered their own. Websites like Bighugelabs.com/poster.php offer a more simple do-it-yourself approach with movie poster templates. Customers can add a photo, title and credits and create a poster for $10 to $30, depending on size. Ramirez says he doesn’t see “The End” when it comes to movie posters as a wedding trend, and that new ideas will keep evolving. MODERN BRIDES ADD COLOR TO SHOW THEIR INDIVIDUALITY 84

ShorebrideOnline.com

istory has told countless stories about the tradition and meaning behind the white wedding dress. Modern brides are writing their own stories by taking the white wedding dress and making it all their own. “Brides want to come up with something they haven’t already seen,” says Cathy Brown, owner of Catherine’s Bridal Boutique in Valparaiso. To accomplish that goal, brides are choosing to incorporate color into their gowns. Some brides choose a wedding dress in colors straight from the rainbow or just a hint of color. Brown says she’s had brides choose red wedding dresses, and others choose a small item like their shoes in their favorite color or in the wedding colors. A recent trend Brown has seen are brides wearing colored headbands in lieu of tiaras to pull off their color desire. Newlywed Raquel Wood of Hobart, knowing her wedding day had to be an expression of uniqueness, chose Indianapolis Colts’ Blue—her husband Michael’s favorite sports team and her favorite color. After finding out she could have her wedding shoes dyed blue, she turned to the Internet for more color options. On her wedding day, Wood donned a blue, shoulder-length veil. “After the wedding everyone said how beautiful everything was and that they’ve never seen anyone wear a different color veil,” Wood says. “I love that they [her guests] will always remember it.” Christina Zukowski, a local wedding coordinator and owner of Devoted Wedding and Events, says she loves seeing brides think outside of the box. Zukowski says while brides have a lot more color-inspired dress options and a variety of colors to choose from, they should know it’s still like traditional dress shopping. “It may take a while to find exactly what you’re looking for,” Zukowski says. One of her favorite ways a bride added color to her dress was with a purple rhinestone belt that coordinated with her wedding colors. She says it was beautiful and different. “I encourage it,” Brown says. “It’s an easy way to put a personal stamp on a gown.” -Nichole Odijk DeMario

Greening OF WEDDINGS THE

Today’s couples look for ways to be more eco-friendly The current mantra to “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” has evolved from a simple push to improve the environment in which we live to an actual trend amongst many local brides and grooms. From the elimination of wrapping paper at the wedding shower to the utilization of local and seasonal food and flowers on the wedding day, more local couples and wedding planners are striving to come up with creative ways to be as eco-friendly as possible. “Whether you consider it as being conservative or frugal or ecological, the fact is that today’s couples are always looking for ways to make their day unique,” explains Anne Vonk, CMP, director of sales and catering at the Boulevard Inn and Bistro in St. Joseph, Michigan. “Putting their personal stamp on their day is very important. And so, if they are ecologically minded, you are going to see that demonstrated throughout their wedding day. They don’t want to be seen as wasteful in any way.” Vonk says she sees examples of these environmentally based changes every day when working with her wedding couples. “I have many couples who have made donations to charities in lieu of table favors. I worked with a group of couples who bought an assortment of flatware from a Goodwill store, and used it at each of their weddings. Printed materials are now done on recycled paper. It often takes both the couple and us to work together and get creative to come up with these eco-friendly ideas.” This new ecological way of thinking has even spilled into actual wedding attire. “We do a lot of restoring and restyling of vintage wedding gowns, whether for environmental or sentimental reasons,” explains Tami Parks, owner of September’s Bride in Holland, Michigan. “Whether they find their dress in the corner of some antique store or in the back of their grandmother’s attic, we can clean it, restyle it and effectively recycle it.” The same goes for the bridesmaids’ dresses, with many of today’s brides doing their best to avoid making their attendants spend money on a dress that might end up sitting in their closet for years. “It’s not so important for everyone to match anymore, but it is important to brides to eliminate any unnecessary waste whenever they can,” says Parks, who has owned September’s Bride for the past four years. “I would definitely say this sort of recycling trend will stick around for quite a while.” -Tricia Despres

Castle Romance Abounds in Charlevoix

photography provided by CASTLE FARMS

B

rian and Nichole always dreamed of being married in a castle. Majesty, pomp, romance beckoned! But when the castles of Ireland and Scotland proved beyond their budget, threatening to destroy their dream, a magical winter day in Northern Michigan put Nichole in Charlevoix . . . where, just like in a fairy tale, she happened upon a graceful and elegant castle . . . a castle known as Castle Farms. “Our dream castle, right here in Michigan!” Brian raved when Nichole informed him of her discovery. Soon, The Royal Wedding was on! Guests received invitations on pink scrolls with gold lettering, and the Castle’s King’s Great Hall was filled with the heavenly scent of Stargazer lilies and fuchsia roses. An outdoor ceremony beneath the shadow of the great stone walls of the Knight’s Courtyard was originally planned, but Mother Nature unexpectedly intervened. “The rain started pouring down fifteen minutes before our ceremony started,” Brian lamented. “We had to move to the indoor chapel in the King’s Great Hall even as our guests were arriving. But the Castle Farms wedding team staff leapt into action,

and suddenly we had a hundred smiling guests being seated in the chapel where it was warm and dry. The Castle Farms team literally saved the day . . . and seeing my gorgeous bride walk down the aisle brought tears to my eyes. Our dream wedding was happening! We were getting married in a castle!”

Brian and Nichole exchanged vows on October 10, 2009. “Our wedding at Castle Farms was truly magical,” Brian added. “And that amazing day at the Castle really was the beginning of our “Happily Ever After . . .” Looking for your own Happily-Ever-After? Castle Farms, built in 1918, is a magnificent French Renaissance-style castle modeled after the massive stone castles found in Normandy, France. Now fully restored, and listed on both the National and State Historic Registries, Castle Farms has professionally trained wedding coordinators who assist bridal couples in planning the perfect day . . . as Brian and his fiancée Nicole happily discovered. Since the first Castle wedding in 2002, Castle Farms has provided a romantic setting for more than six hundred couples to exchange wedding vows. Now one of the premier bridal venues in the Midwest, Castle Farms is a world-class historic property that blends old world charm and modern day amenities with timeless elegance. A wedding at Castle Farms truly is the stuff of which fairy tales are made. CASTLE FARMS 5052 M-66 North Charlevoix, Mich. 231.237.0994. castlefarms.com

CHICAGO DESIGNER SOPHIA REYES CREATES HER OWN WEDDING GOWN

To design her dream wedding dress, Sophia Reyes created a moodboard, which is what clothing designers employ for inspiration, using snippets of fabric, color and photographs.

A gown, by any other name, would look as lovely—especially if it is layered like the petals of a rose: a soft, delicate white rose. ¶ When Sophia Reyes custom-designed the dress she wore at her spring 2011 wedding, she envisioned layers of silky satin that wrapped around like an English Garden rose. “I wanted a dreamy texture without beads and lace. Something that moved when I walked,” the 26-year-old Chicago designer says.

eyes designs a line of women’s silk dresses and blouses, which she wholesales to boutiques in New York, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. Like her spring and fall collection, her bridal gown sprang from a freshly tilled creative heart. The one-of-a-kind dress was delicate but strong, with rose-petal layers that cascaded like a Brazilian rainforest waterfall. To design her dream wedding dress, Reyes first planted a seed. She created a moodboard, which is what clothing designers employ for inspiration, with snippets of fabric, color and photographs. On her palette were ivory and white, in shadow and light. Luscious pink petals. Folds of fabric. Shades of chartreuse. If her gown could blossom from this rich soil, Reyes would glide to the altar in ethereal elegance. After creating her moodboard, Reyes sketched and sketched until she designed the perfect silhouette, or dress shape: a modern, traditional A-line

dress with a strapless top and billowing skirt. “I knew from my body type that I wanted a bodice (form-fitting top). I wanted the hips to have the more structured layers,” she says. Bodice pleating was added for texture. Next, Reyes designed the flats, which are patterns and outlines a seamstress follows to make a design blossom. “This is the critical thinking point. It’s not just creating a pretty picture and then not knowing how to execute it,” Reyes says. Flats include sewing and finishing techniques, and measurements. To create the flats, a dress designer needs to be familiar with fabrics and their characteristics. Reyes wanted her fabric cut on the bias, meaning cut at a diagonal across the weave. This required a jaw-dropping 35 yards of silk satin organza, purchased from her New York supplier. “Silk is a high-end choice,” Reyes says. “It would have to be something cheaper, like polyester, if someone bought it off the rack.” Reyes took her body measurements and patterned the basic silhouette. She had a fitting, with base Haroform material for the bodice. She let the design germinate, adding a dip to the back of the bodice, lengthening the train, perfecting the fit. Then she began building the dress. “Some parts have to be draped, others have to be patterned. The fabric is cut and sewn. It’s like a sculpture,” Reyes says. Reyes’ dressmaker created the layers, making the bottom half first, building on top of it, arranging and adjusting the dress at fittings. “I had to consider, can I sit and dance in it?” Reyes says. When complete, the ultra-soft wedding dress had the smoothness of silk, and conveyed beauty and romance. The cream-colored roses on Reyes’ moodboard had bloomed into a masterpiece. A finishing touch was a floppy ivory-colored sash on the bottom of the bodice. For the reception, Reyes switched it out for a black sash that matched her Badgley Mischka black satin pumps. Reyes also designed Sophia Reyes’ bouquet of pink flowing silk dresses for her orchids coordinated with the bridesmaids. Each had brightly colored bridesmaid dresses. a cascade in the front to incorporate the layered rose petal feeling of the bridal gown. The bridesmaids’ flowers complemented their dresses. “The dress colors were violet and magenta and eggplant and fuchsia and pink berry. It was like a gem color spectrum,” Reyes says. The bride’s bouquet of pink orchids coordinated with the brightly colored bridesmaid dresses. A floral feather crowned Reyes’ updo. Reyes began designing the bridesmaid dresses about two months after starting on her wedding dress. She trusted the seamstress for her collection to sew her bridal gown, which she did over eight months. Reyes says, “She does beautiful work. It’s really important, when you try to create something like this, that the person carry out your vision.”

CENTER FOR OTOLARYNGOLOGY & FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY: Dr. Bethany Cataldi’s Individual Approach Tailored to Patients’ Unique Cosmetic Needs

E

stablished by Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic surgeon Bethany Cataldi, D.O., Center for Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic Surgery, located in Munster, Indiana, allows for Dr. Cataldi to treat prospective facial cosmetic surgery patients with genuine warmth and attention. She brings her expertise in facial plastic surgery and cosmetic enhancement procedures after extensive training and a life-long passion for providing medical care.

A UNIQUE ‘ONE-TO-ONE’ APPROACH A committed approach to patient care applies to the facial plastic surgery component of her practice. As one of the very few female facial, head and neck plastic surgeons in the region, Dr. Cataldi is especially in tune with the issues of beauty and aesthetics requested by her patients. “When considering any mini face-lift or wrinkle reduction procedures, rather than speaking broadly to large groups of potential candidates in a seminar setting, I prefer to direct my attention to and evaluate what each individual needs in a private and open dialogue to address each patient’s specific and unique concerns. My experience has shown that an honest “one-to-one” approach with patients is best when it comes to cosmetic procedures, and it is clearly evident in the results,” says Dr. Cataldi. She adds, “When a prospective patient comes to me considering a cosmetic procedure, it’s critical that I understand what their expectations are. After all, it’s my privilege to be able to help them achieve their aesthetic goals. I always look at the process as a journey that a patient and I will take together, so we need to be on the same page as far as what is achievable and what is not through the services I can provide them. I am proud to say that I feel that I have been successful in achieving such shared aesthetic

goals with my patients. When they are happy with the results, I am equally happy.” However, Dr. Cataldi adds, “While with the majority of my cosmetic patients, my services may allow for them to reach their goal(s), it’s very important for prospective candidates for facial cosmetic procedures to understand that there may be any number of issues they face that might not necessarily be best resolved through the medical procedures I can provide. For example, at times, I have discouraged patients from having a cosmetic procedure done. As a female physician, I have to say I might have a different perspective on a patient’s image of beauty.

There are many beautiful people—regardless of their age—who simply need to reconsider undergoing any cosmetic procedure, and I feel that it’s my responsibility as their physician to tell them this.” Dr. Cataldi regularly performs non-invasive cosmetic enhancement procedures such as the applications of chemical peels, as well as Restylane®, JuvedermTM, and Botox® that help reduce the visible effects of aging and are done in an office setting. She is also noted by many of her patients for her wonderfully natural-looking mini face-lifts, full face-lifts, and neck-lifts that are surgical procedures that can be performed to tighten the musculature of the face. “I’m still always amazed by the years that a mini-lift can take away. The recovery time is rather minimal following the procedure and the results can be breathtaking,” says Dr. Cataldi. Dr. Cataldi also frequently performs blepharoplasty, a surgical procedure that entails the tightening of the upper or lower eyelid skin (“Another procedure that may help make a patient look years younger”), as well as rhinoplasty (refinement of the nasal skeleton), otoplasty (a cosmetic surgery procedure to change the appearance of a patient’s external ears), and skin cancer and skin lesion surgery. “The impact of cosmetic surgery and cosmetic enhancements on a patient is great,” says Dr. Cataldi. “Overall it helps improve one’s self confidence, one’s self esteem, and gives one a better quality of life. Sometimes it may take a person a long time to come in to see a physician for something that is not medically related, and I try to put all of my patients at ease. We’re on a journey together, and I want them to be happy at the end of it,” she says. CENTER FOR OTOLARYNGOLOGY AND FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY, LLC 9120 Columbia Ave, Suite A Munster, Ind. 219.836.4820

P WER On the wedding day, a bride relies on a whole package of accessories to complete her look. The veil. The shoes. The jewelry. And, of course, the flowers.

S

heri Beikmann, of Beikmann Associates Floral Design in Niles, Michigan, has noticed a shift away from roses toward garden and tropical flower varieties. “We’re using marigolds, zinnias, dahlias, sunflowers, even grasses and Queen Anne’s Lace for a garden/wildflower type of look,” she says. On the tropical side, she says Bird of Paradise, Protea and Anthurium are becoming more popular. Color, texture and bling are in when it comes to today’s bridal and bridesmaid bouquets, according to Steve Brickner, co-owner of the Flower Cart, with locations in Chesterton and Valparaiso. “There are different types of flowers that make a resurgence,” Brickner says. “Gerbera daisy is one of the more popular flowers being used. It comes in lots of colors and is bright colored.” “Brides are also adding lime green as an accent to about any flower they’re using. It helps to brighten up the color combination,” he says. “From orchids to hydrangea to Bells of Ireland to even carnations and chrysanthemums in green, it kind of breaks it up and makes it pop a little more.” Besides lime green accents, he’s also seeing a lot of entirely green bouquets or those that are predominately green with white or ivory accents. “It’s kind of a fresh look—more ecofriendly and natural,” Brickner says. The traditional styles are being spruced up with branches and foliage to add texture, or rhinestones, crystals or wire to add some sparkle and shine, he adds. “If anything, the trend is now individual style.” While a clutch arrangement is still the most popular style, Beikmann is also getting more requests for the cascade look. Dahlia - dignity, elegance In the floral arrangements, couples can also add Chrysanthemum - optimism a personal touch with flowers that take on special Carnation - devoted love meanings. Brickner said he did a Scottish wedding Buttercup - humility where he incorporated thistle, the flower that is Bird of Paradise - faithfulness Scotland’s national emblem. For another wedding, Baby’s breath - purity of heart, innocence a bride had lost a grandmother who loved lavender, Lily - chastity so sprigs of the flower were added to her bouquet. Marigold - passion, creativity “If there’s something that has meaning to the Orchid - love and beauty couple or their family, you can design flowers that Rose - love bring that into it,” Brickner says. “It can be subtle Daisy - loyal love and something that only the bride knows or can be Lilac - beauty, youth more of a focal point.” -Carrie Steinweg

Candy tables go beyond cookie cutter

northwest indiana’s premier bridal event

For brides looking for that extra layer beyond a traditional wedding cake, a candy buffet may satisfy a creative sweet tooth. This out-of-the-box trend has emerged in recent years, popular on wedding blogs and in growing demand for new brides. “It’s a way for brides to be unique. It’s not your typical cookie cutter wedding,” says Samantha Kelm, a professional bridal consultant in Stevensville, Michigan. According to Kelm, an eye-catching candy table can entertain guests as they wait for the wedding party or provide a sweet late night break from the dance floor. Candy buffets may replace a cake, be an addition to the traditional cake and even serve as party favors as guests are encouraged to fill personal bags with a selected assortment. “There’s something for everybody, compared to a cake where the bride and groom are selecting a few flavors,” Kelm says. Linda Walker’s Valparaiso business, How Sweet It Is, specializes in candy buffets and reception design. She works with brides and grooms from Chicago to Indianapolis to create custom candy creations. “Packages range from bright and playful candies to more high-end and elegant chocolates,” Walker says. Her packages include eight candy choices, personalized treat bags, labeled glass jars, scoops, tongs and table linens. Standard serving-size is a half bag per guest, priced between $3.25 and $5.50 per guest for a 150-guest minimum. “The variety is really fun. There are candy necklaces for the kids, and salt and sweet combinations like our chocolate covered pretzels and animal crackers for the adults,” Walker says. Black and white color combos are customary colors for weddings, says Walker, who suggests using accent colors to complement the traditional theme. Other themes in high demand include candy “bling,” accomplished by adding sparkles and rhinestones, as well as “vintage,” incorporating old-fashioned candies. And while you can’t have your cake and eat it too, the leftover candy is bagged for the newlyweds to take home. -Jillian Ranegar

Martin Binder Jeweler Built On Integrity and Quality

W

ith more than 70 years of experience selling and creating fine jewelry, Martin Binder Jeweler is proud to have assisted countless couples, some thirdgeneration buyers, with their engagement ring purchases. Founded in 1940, the third-generation, family-owned jewelry store was built on two main traits: integrity and quality. “Working with the principles that my grandparents started with, combined with an approach to providing our customers with the best value, we’re confident we can help couples find

what they’re looking for,” owner Robert Flude says. Couples can browse the Valparaiso jewelry store’s large selection of in-house designed rings, loose diamonds, mountings, and rings from popular designers—including Verragio, Ritani and Scott Kay, among others—in a comfortable, pressure-free environment. Knowledgeable sales associates are available to advise and assist the customer in finding the perfect setting and stone that fits their budget. Flude offers customers the highest quality for the best price by being one of the only Northwest Indiana jewelers to travel overseas every three months to direct-buy diamonds. “We can match or beat the prices of Internet wholesalers by cutting out the middle man, which allows us to pass

the savings along to our customers,” Flude says. But customers are not just limited to what they see on display. With an award-winning custom jewelry designer and a seasoned goldsmith on staff, Martin Binder Jeweler can bring a couple’s ring design to life. To help ensure that your engagement ring purchase lasts a lifetime, the store offers complimentary appraisals for insurance purposes, and lifetime ultrasonic cleaning and diamond inspection. Their loose diamond trade-up program allows customers to trade in their Martin Binder diamond for an upgrade toward another diamond. Additionally, customers can enjoy a 20 percent discount on wedding bands, and gifts for the bride, groom, bridesmaids and groomsmen when they purchase an engagement diamond and setting at Martin Binder Jeweler. The store can engrave many of the giftware pieces for a personal touch. MARTIN BINDER JEWELER 23 Lincolnway, Valparaiso 219.462.5931. martinbinders.com

Tips for Buying the Perfect Engagement Ring

S

o you’ve found that special someone that you want to spend the rest of your life with and you’re ready for that life-changing, down-onone-knee moment . . . but which ring will you put inside that box? Follow these tips from Bob Flude, Graduate Gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America and owner of Martin Binder Jeweler in downtown Valparaiso, to ensure that you find the perfect ring: Do your homework. When it comes to diamonds, knowing what to purchase begins with the 4 C’s—carat, cut, color and clarity. There are many websites that can help educate you on diamond buying, but an in-person tutorial from your local jeweler may be your best resource.

Decide on a budget. Know what you can afford to spend before you begin to shop. A once commonly accepted guideline recommended spending two months worth of your salary on an engagement ring, but establishing a budget is a completely personal decision. After determining your budget, browse the styles available within your price range and adjust your budget as necessary. Take your time. Don’t expect to find the perfect ring on your first trip. It may take several visits to different jewelry stores to narrow down your choices. Allow yourself plenty of time to browse and learn about different styles. Ask questions. Why is one diamond more expensive than the other? Which metals are more

resistant to wear? Which setting will secure your diamond best? Your jeweler has the answers. Asking plenty of questions will ensure that you purchase the perfect diamond, metal and setting for your lifestyle. Take lifestyle into account. A large diamond engagement ring may be impractical for someone who works with her hands. A jeweler can advise you on which ring styles will be best suited for the environment in which the ring will be worn most often. Consider the wedding band. Women’s wedding bands are typically worn on the same finger as the engagement ring, closest to the heart, with the engagement ring sitting on top of the wedding band. When purchasing an

engagement ring, ask your jeweler about wedding bands that will complement the ring. Protect your investment. It is always important to insure your jewelry properly. A quality jeweler will supply an appraisal with your purchase. Contact your insurance company first so you know what information you will need from your jeweler for insurance purposes. Plan for the future. As time goes on and styles change, you may want to replace your center stone. Many jewelers offer a trade-up or trade-in policy, which allows customers to replace their diamond with a larger or higherquality diamond. Be sure to ask about this policy, so you know about your future options.

Love Money

FOR

OR

Are you and your mate financially compatible?

RARELY DO ANY TOPICS ELICIT MORE PASSION THAN LOVE AND MONEY, BUT WAITING UNTIL AFTER THE KNOT IS TIED CAN BE A DISASTROUS TIME TO LEARN THAT THE TWO OF YOU DO NOT SEE FINANCIALLY EYE-TO-EYE.

M

ichael Mulkey, a financial adviser in Muncie, Indiana, says couples need to discuss their feelings about money early in their relationship and be observant. “If your potential partner’s got significant credit card or college debt and no retirement savings or other assets, you may be entering into a financially stressful relationship. Someone who regularly pays their bills in full and follows a budget is saying they’re financially responsible.” While no one can say for certain if a couple will be financially compatible, the sooner attitudes are shared the better. “Younger couples, at least initially, are often in agreement,” says Ron Nichter, an adviser in Pendleton, Indiana. “But often they’ve yet to be challenged.” Affording a down payment and then a mortgage generally top the list for those considering marriage. Other decisions, such as whether or not to purchase life or disability insurance or to save for retirement,

as fewer companies now provide such benefits, can complicate matters. “There’s a finite amount of money but a seemingly infinite amount of things to spend it on,” Nichter says. “When children arrive, things can change.” Hot-button issues: should one spouse stay home or should each continue working and get child care? Should money be put aside for a child’s future or invested for retirement? Should you move to a larger house? A better school district? More subjective issues like ego and status can lead to conflict. Is it important for one spouse to have a new car every other year? Maybe the other spouse would rather keep the old car and pay down the mortgage? The largest money mistake: “I will be able to change him or her,” says financial planner Roch Tranel of Libertyville, Illinois. “Your spouse has been programmed for 20 years or so by Mom and Dad. Your love and nagging are not going to move the needle very much.” The kind of household in which one was raised will often influence their views on money. Watch for signs, Tranel advises. “Is Thanksgiving dinner simple and more about family or about letting peers know you ate at a country club? Is the parents’ house decorated with the latest flat-screen TV or is a 20-year-old set still in use?” Justin Halpenny, a financial adviser in Lisle, Illinois, says newlyweds should set up an automatic savings and investment plan. “Hoping to put something aside at the end of each month rarely works,” he says. “There are too many demands. Having funds automatically deducted and invested is a great way for a couple to start saving.” Such plans can be started for as little as $50 per month. Financially conflicted couples, according to Halpenny, should seek the help of an independent financial adviser. “An impartial professional can help sort things out and create a plan.” Need help finding one? CREATE THE REGISTRY OF YOUR DREAMS

L

inens . . . check. Dishes . . . check. Flatware . . . check. Plunger . . .? Colette Robinson of Grayslake, Illinois, says she and her husband Ben’s registry deserved an award for being the most obscure. Along with scanning plungers, the Robinsons in all their excitement chose a quesadilla maker and a turkey-size toaster oven. The oversized toaster oven was returned and the quesadilla maker found a home “in the basement by our suitcases.” With scan gun in hand, couples can feel a unique sense of power. “It’s like a kid at Christmas with an infinite wish list,” Robinson says. “You start scanning everything.” Just more than a year ago, my husband Nick and I were making our way through the store of our registry choice. I turned to ask Nick his thoughts on a stainless steel versus stainless steel and black microwave. He was nowhere to be found. I followed the sound of beeping and discovered Nick amid flatscreen televisions. To give our wedding shower guests choices, he chose four. Needless to say, it is easy to get sidetracked. Target store senior team leader Shay Swalina tells registering couples to take each section of the store and go slowly. “Couples think of the bigger things they will need,” Swalina says. “When you walk down every aisle, you are less likely to miss out on an item you might not have thought of.” Swalina says regardless if couples choose Target’s Club Wedd or another store they should go above and beyond on their registry. “Choose items you need, but also items you would not necessarily buy yourself,” Swalina says. “Your family and friends may surprise you with a larger gift.” In her five years at Target, Swalina recently has noticed more unique registry items. Along with household items couples are registering for more entertainment items than ever before, from bicycles to televisions to board games. “In this economy I feel people are looking for things to entertain themselves at home to save money,” Swalina says. “Their registry is a great place to get the items to do just that.” Along with registering for household item needs, couples have several options to register for everything from honeymoons to charitable items. Robinson says if she had to do it all over again she would walk through her home and contemplate the items she uses on a daily basis, not just items that catch her eye. “We don’t have steak knives, but we have an adorable yellow cream and sugar bowl set,” Robinson says. -Nichole Odijk DeMario‌

eann Vanschoyck, who was trained as an accountant, found out how much she loved retail when she worked at Droeges, a traditional downtown apparel store, for 13 years. “I never thought I would enjoy fashion and retail,” she says. “But men are different kinds of shoppers and I had such a good rapport with my customers that I decided to take a leap.” When Droeges closed in 2005, Leann opened L.R. Men’s Clothier & Tuxedos, offering comprehensive customer service for men. “We go beyond sales,” she explains. “We take their stuff to the laundry and make dry-cleaning runs. We want to be a boutique for men. A customer can call me and say he needs six white shirts and we will press them and take them to his office, shake hands and invoice him. We are trying to get back to that old-fashioned personal service.” Leann, who grew up in LaPorte, remembers her dad and her grandfather going to shop at Droeges and the service they got. She also pays special attention to merchandise and tries to offer men’s clothing that her customers would not find in the mall. “I have a tailor that does same-day tailoring. A guy might call up and say he has to go to a funeral the next day and he doesn’t have a black suit. I can help him.” This fall will be Leann’s sixth year in business and she feels lucky to have found her passion and what’s in her heart. “I have a 14-year-old daughter L.R.
