Where a Wedding Becomes a getaWay

R

obyn and Chris DeRuyver still hear many wonderful comments from friends and family about their destination wedding held last Labor Day weekend at The Homestead in Glen Arbor, Michigan.

“They say it was a fun party, one of the best weddings,” Chris said. “They loved the resort’s location, the facility, the quality of the service, and the chairlift ride to the top of Bay Mountain, with that amazing Lake Michigan view.”

Robyn and Chris became engaged in Napa Valley and were drawn to northern Michigan’s comparable rolling landscape of vineyards and the sparkling beaches of Sleeping Bear Dunes.

During their initial tour with Barb, The Homestead’s wedding coordinator, the couple was impressed not only with the resort’s waterfront setting and spectacular vista, but with its many thoughtfully planned conveniences. They loved the closeness of their mountaintop ceremony site to the great hall, Mountain Flowers, where they later dined and danced with 150 relatives and friends, and sipped cocktails while star-gazing from the patio.

They appreciated sharing spacious rental accommodations, like their mountain-view Chimney Ridge homes, and the ability to offer guests an array of accommodations to match their

budgets—from lodge rooms and hotel suites near the mountain or beach, to condominiums with forest, lake or water views.

They were relieved to hear that resort personnel would take care of the smallest details.

The Homestead’s chef helped them choose a local sparkling wine and add personal touches to the menus, including their special surprise for guests: a Prime Rib hand-carving station.

Barb coordinated the local florist, baker and photographer and confirmed that everyone received lodging. The banquet team made certain that tabletop arrangements were carried from one location to another.

“Staff was amazing,” enthused Chris, who was the go-to guy while Robyn finished her graduate studies. “We felt really comfortable with the planning process; Barb walked us through it, and everything just fell into place.”

Their “Wedding Weekend

Extravaganza” began Thursday with a sunset bonfire on The Homestead’s beach near Café Manitou, where Robyn said children skipped stones and tasted their first s’mores. On Friday, the gals visited the spa and the guys golfed at “Manitou Passage,” a newly renovated Arnold Palmer signature course.

The wedding party enjoyed an exclusive, pre-ceremony visit to the resort’s fitness room on Saturday. Sunday’s breakfast included made-to-order omelets served at Camp Firefly, the resort’s timber-and-fieldstone hall. Guests climbed dunes, rode bicycles, kayaked and swam.

The DeRuyvers’ favorite wedding memories are of evenings spent with family and friends. “Our routine every night was to walk on trails to the top of the mountain where we were married,” Robyn sighed.

“It was great to be there and to share that experience with so many of our loved ones.”

“It’s a lot of work. Portapotties, tents, dance floors— you sort of take that stuff for granted. The list was neverending,” Sites says.

So, where does the extra work come in? For starters, Sites says, you have to think of every tiny detail—many of which are normally taken care of by a rental space or When Jill Sites and her husband Jayson decided to get event planner. The budget was hard to stick to because extra expenses just kept popping up. The budget had to expand to incorporate items such as an extra twenty tables just for the caterer to use for serving. An outdoor, at-home wedding also requires landscaping and lighting professionals. In short, Sites says, if you plan on organizing the wedding yourself, just be sure you’re one prepared planner and that you have a budget that can handle some surprises.

But just because it’s more work, Sites says, doesn’t mean it can’t be worth it. After all, there are some benefits to being at home on your wedding day.

You can be more creative there than most rental properties, you can use landscaping that will be an investment into your property instead of buying flowers and, most importantly, you’ll live in the place where you made your vows.

“It was absolutely worth it,” Sites says. “I would not change our location for anything in the world. It was phenomenal.” –CHRISTY

According to Page, pink will never go out of style for warm-weather weddings; it’s just the shade that changes. Fuchsia is an easy hue for finding matching flowers—just be sure not to overdo it with too much pink.

amethyst

Amethyst is a perfect choice for anyone who wants a combination of colors at their wedding. This vibrant purple shade pairs well with other brights. An added bonus—purples are flattering to most.

The key with sapphire is to be subtle with it, using it as an accent where possible.

If you wish to use sapphire, make it easier on yourself by combining it with other, less-vibrant blues. You should avoid sapphire for an outdoor wedding, unless you want your girls to disappear in photos.

Apple green is at the height of its popularity this season. But, it’s a tricky one. It can be difficult for most complexions to pull off. However, green does lend itself to creative centerpieces, like grasses, apples or limes. Avoid green for a garden wedding, but it looks lovely on the beach.

turquoise

Turquoise is a bold and beautiful color that works well paired with other strong hues. Flowers can be somewhat impossible, but it tends to be a crowd-pleaser for bridesmaids since it flatters pretty much any complexion.

The average bride will spend about $100 on flower petals.

There are some obvious items you want to avoid in the preceding days, such as high-sodium foods that may cause bloating or high-fat foods that can cause skin breakouts, but Lauren Zuro, registered dietician at St. Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana, offers some tips on what you should eat to feel and look great.

1) Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries They’re high in antioxidants, which contribute to clear, healthylooking skin.

Candy bars are becoming more popular for receptions, allowing you to offer your guests all of your favorite candies and treats. If you’re worried about having too many leftovers, festive boxes or Chinese takeout boxes will allow your guests to cart away confections for later.

2) Salmon and walnuts

They’re high in omega 3 fatty acids, which contribute to healthy cell membranes by holding water. It results in skin with a youthful and tighter appearance.

3) Citrus fruits

Who wants a runny nose as they’re walking down the aisle? Oranges and other citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, which will help prevent a cold.

4) Water

It helps clear toxins out of the blood, which contributes to healthy skin. Also, it doesn’t irritate the stomach, so if you get the jitters, it won’t cause a reaction.

5) Whole grains and high fiber foods They help with regularity and

keep you feeling full, which promotes weight maintenance and weight loss.

Arriving in Style

There are so many details that go into planning the ceremony and reception, and the act of literally getting there gives couples another opportunity to express their taste and personality. While a standard limousine sedan is a convenient and elegant way for a bride to arrive at the church or for the couple to depart to the reception, there are many additional options— from carriages to classic automobiles to slick sports cars—when it comes to transportation.

Exotic car SharE in Palatine, Illinois, is a membership-based organization where a $250 membership fee is assessed to administer credit and background checks. Once a member, a qualified driver over 23 can reserve high-end sports and luxury cars. A wedding package includes two-day use for a flat fee that includes indoor storage of your car, fuel, insurance, toll passes and orientation and training for the driver and another family member.

George Kiebala, one of the owners of the decade-old company, says there are more than 1,000 members and the Ferrari (which runs $1,190 for the wedding package), 1969 Mustang Mach I and Dodge Viper (which are $740) are popular choices to be driven by the groom. Of the three, only the Mustang has a backseat, allowing a member of the wedding party to act as chauffeur. “For a lot of grooms, this is their first time driving a Ferrari, and they prefer to drive themselves,” Kiebala says. He also says many couples return on their anniversary to relive the ride. Though the concept of the dessert bar is not new, it has become more widespread in weddings as couples take its interpretation to the next level. With lots of fun possibilities for color and taste combinations, dessert bars can be a true reflection of a couple’s vision.

hicago-based wedding planner Marcia Hemphill of An Urban Affair (anurbanaffair.net) says dessert bars are becoming part of the décor—based on color and theme—rather than just about the sweets. Think throwback candies, Bermuda-themed desserts for a destination wedding, or pink-themed truffles and cupcakes. “With a dessert bar, couples can make it more personal,” Hemphill says.

Dessert bars can be more affordable than buying a traditional wedding cake, though Hemphill says the cost of a dessert bar can vary widely. “What brides envision in their head for a dessert bar is often not what is actually cost-saving,” she says.

should be kept simple and be in place of, not in addition to, a wedding cake.

Without a doubt, however, a dessert bar will lend itself to a more fun and social atmosphere. “It is interactive, gets people up and moving around and talking,” Hemphill says.

Dessert bars also eliminate the need for cutting and serving a cake: guests can easily serve themselves, picking from their favorite offerings. With cupcakes, couples may even avoid providing plates or forks.

More traditional couples may worry that a dessert bar eliminates the focal cake-cutting event and the accompanying cake-in-face photos. But couples can have their cake and dessert bar, too: just order a small wedding cake for photos, but give the guests the additional option of the dessert bar.

RECYCLING YOUR WEDDING LEFTOVERS Couples spend a lot of time planning for the wedding but often don’t think much about what to do with the celebration’s leftovers.

For the socially and environmentally concerned duo, there is now a service that will take the often-considerable wedding leftovers and redirect them to food banks, soup kitchens and other organizations serving those in need.

“We started under the premise that there was a component that is left at the end of events that can be put to use,” says Robert Kalt, owner of Special E (thespeciale.com), which he started a year ago.

“We are akin to a recycling company, but here the end result is something that benefits people in need.”

Special E’s “rescue teams” collect and deliver leftover flowers and unopened leftover food to its Chicago partners, including Salvation Army, Goodwill Chicago and the Pacific Garden Mission. Pricing varies by event size and the leftovers the party wants to save, but Kalt says most weddings average a fee from $350 to $750.

Special E provides services in more than thirty cities, and about a third of its business is weddings.

Brides within a 90-minute radius of Chicago can schedule services from Special E, although Kalt says they have never turned down a request.

Is Honesty the Best Policy?

Sometimes, telling the truth can backfire—even in a marriage. Sure, he’s your best friend, your best confidant and your one and only partner through life. But once in a while, your hubby’s breath stinks. Or he truly believes that his striped green shirt matches his blue plaid pants. Is it really necessary to point out his stinky breath or his utter lack of fashion sense?

No, says Nick Constantine, a psychologist with a private practice in Merrillville. “Give him some breath mints, or buy some clothing for him,” Constantine suggests. Unless, he says, you know that your spouse would be okay with knowing—or would even want to know—that he has a hygiene problem, or some other issue.

“Ask them first, ‘Can you handle this?’” Constantine says.

“There are some relationships where the person can handle the truth. It would take time and experience to sense if that person can take honesty.”

But if you know that your spouse would be mortified and simply ashamed and depressed if you told him that his hygiene wasn’t up to par, then you can simply suggest fun, hygienic ideas—such as taking a soapy shower together—to get him super clean.

There are some truths, however, that even the most confident spouses wouldn’t be

able to handle. Would you ever be okay with knowing that your husband fantasizes about other women while he’s making love to you? It’s a totally normal, healthy activity—but it’s probably best if you don’t tell your husband about your fantasy about you and his best friend, says Terry Top, marriage and family therapist, and executive director at New Leaf Resources in Lansing.

“You should refrain from talking about things that would obviously be hurtful. You want to be honest, but you don’t have to be brutally honest,” Top says. “If it’s not problematic, I wouldn’t share the fantasies.”

But if the fantasies have gotten to the point where you’re obsessed with someone else, and it’s causing problems in your relationship, you’ll need to talk about it and deal with it.

The key, Top says, is deciding not to say hurtful things—even if you’re trying to be honest. “You have to think, ‘Is this really going to be helpful? Why would I do something intentionally hurtful to the person I love?’”

And there are always ways of getting around the truth while still getting the point across to your spouse, Top says. If he asks if his outfit makes him look fat, there’s no reason to simply say “yes,” even if it’s the truth.

Instead, you could say, “I think your other outfits look better on you,” Top suggests.

It turns a lose-lose question into a win-win. He’ll understand that you don’t like the outfit, but he won’t get upset and think that he personally is looking awful.

If your pants feel snug after the wedding, you’re not alone. It turns out most people gain a significant amount of weight after getting married. A study recently published in the journal Obesity finds that married couples are more likely to become obese than single or even dating couples.

T

his “happy weight” most likely results from laziness and comfort, says Terry Top, marriage and family therapist and executive director at New Leaf Resources in Lansing. You’ve got the man, and now it’s not so necessary to go to the gym and watch what you eat.

But if the happy weight doesn’t make you so happy, there are a few tricks to help you

prevent and zap those pounds ASAP. It may be romantic to grab a hot cocoa with your sweetie on a cold winter day, or to share an ice cream sundae in the middle of a summer afternoon. But if you add as few as 100 calories a day to your diet, you’ll gain a pound per month and nearly 12 pounds in just a year, says Debi Pillarella, certified personal trainer and fitness program director at the Community Hospital Fitness Pointe in Munster.

Instead of spending hours leaning over that fondue pot, try to find romance in more active activities. Instead of going out for dinner, drinks and a movie, try taking a ballroom dance class, going bowling, golfing or even walking. If you really want to stay at home and be a couch potato, you can do some crunches or push-ups during the commercials, Pillarella says.

You could also take a healthy cooking class together. Or, simply take turns cooking for each other instead of going out to eat.

“Focus on including whole grains, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats in your meal planning,” Pillarella says. “Keep an eye on portion control. Every little bit counts.”

When investing, it’s time in the market—not timing the market. Another important and often overlooked aspect to a couple’s financial plan is life insurance.
